In a 2020 interview with the New York Times Magazine, actor Val Kilmer acknowledged his unfortunate reputation for being "difficult." Although possessed of movie star good looks, handily backed up by a great deal of talent and devotion to his craft, Kilmer often found himself butting heads with executives and studio honchos over his perceived ego. He admitted that had "alienated the head of every major studio," but only out of an attempt to empower actors and directors over studios, and, in his words, "attempt to breathe Suzukian life into a myriad of Hollywood moments." He further confessed as much in Ting Poo's and Leo Scott's 2021 biographical documentary "Val," when he admitted to behaving poorly. He then amended that more accurate adverbs might be "bizarrely" and "brazenly."
But for years, Kilmer couldn't shake his rep. Many stories of Kilmer's bad behavior notoriously came from the utter clusterf*** that was John Frankenheimer...

I thought I was done buying The Texas Chain Saw Massacre after upgrading to the 40th anniversary edition Blu-ray in 2014. Between the crisp presentation and the copious extras, I was certain it was the definitive version of Tobe Hooper‘s 1974 masterpiece. Yet here I am, nearly a decade later, ready to sing the praises of Dark Sky Films‘ 4K Ultra HD edition.
Long before “gritty” was an industry buzzword, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre epitomized the term. As such, one might be wary that a 4K restoration could hinder the viewing experience, but that is not at all the case. Utilizing the 4K scan from the aforementioned Blu-ray, which was approved by Hooper, and now with a wider color gamut courtesy of Hdr, the picture is presented in staggering clarity while maintaining the 16mm film grain. The oppressive heat is virtually palpable.
Co-written by Hooper and Kim Henkel, the plot...

Documentaries chronicling cinemas past are nothing new, but it seems that since the debut of Best Worst Movie there has been something of a renaissance for documentaries focusing on the fringes of cinema, focusing on genre fare that had a cult following – films like Not Quiet Hollywood, You’re So Cool Brewster, Machete Maidens Unleashed, and Wolfman’s Got Nards. And thanks to the success of those films and the huge growth in crowd-funding, the documentary genre itself has boomed, with both filmmakers and fans making movies on their favourite subject and documentaries on “cult” subjects now regularly playing the festival circuit, and finding a home in film fans collections,...

Nicolas Cage stars in Color Out of Space, adapting H.P. Lovecraft’s story about a mysterious meteor’s effect on a small town.
Color Out of Space may be one of many when it comes to star Nicolas Cage’s current spate of debt-decreasing payday pictures, but this one arrives with the unique context of being a wantonly wild adaptation of a story by legendary horror author H.P. Lovecraft.
This prospective new source of “Cage Rage” memes has the iconic headliner playing a family man whose farm estate existence becomes incredibly inconvenienced when a meteorite lands on his front yard; an event that becomes the catalyst for an outbreak of a mutant virus that runs roughshod across his Massachusetts small town, jeopardizing his family and neighbors.
Famously embattled South African horror auteur Richard Stanley serves as director here, working off a screenplay that he co-wrote with Scarlett Amaris,...

Today we've got a brief look at a pair of home video releases that spotlight cult filmmakers who deserve a little moment to shine. While these films are very different in tone and subject, and the filmmakers themselves are also very different in terms of output, the films and releases are indicative of the fact that there are still people out there who want to see what these gentlemen have to say.Read further for more details and thoughts on Joe Dante's Burying the Ex and David Gregory's Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau on Blu-ray....

As recently reported by Fangoria, the weirdos at Severin Films are releasing film festival favorite Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau on DVD and Blu-ray on July 14. The doc details the mind-boggling, head-scratching antics of what happened both on and off set on the notoriously botched production. You can read James Marsh's original Fantastic Fest 2014 review here. There will be a Blu-ray release, which will offer such features as the concept art by acclaimed genre artist Graham Humpreys (with commentary by Richard Stanley), "Beast of Morbido" featurette, and an audio interview with Barbara Steele. The two-disc DVD "House of Pain" version includes Island of the Lost, the 1921 version of Moreau thought lost to the ravages of time, as well as...
