Please come back for another season!
I really really liked this anime! After finishing though I am left with a lot of questions and anticipation. There is no real word that this show is coming back but I have learned with anime that you need the patience of saint. We have to wait for a long period of time for more but 90% of the time we are not left disappointed! You will love the characters and watching this unique group come together!

Adventure, fantasy, romance
Trixie_reviews11 November 2018
After the betrayal of her beloved cousin Su-won, Princess Yona is forced to flee the palace only with Hak, who is both her childhood friend and bodyguard. After meeting the Oracle, they set on finding four guys who inherited dragons' blood to help her survive. During her journey, she soon discovers that her kingdom is not the idyllic place she was lead to believe and starts doing some things to change that.

I absolutely love this anime. Yona especially is evolving a lot throughout the season and her character arch from helpless girl to badass warrior is absolutely amazing. There are also sparks of romance in the air, from both Hak, her loyal and extremely hot bodyguard, and Su-won, the handsome cousin who is a guy you just gotta love to hate and hate to love (at first you might just think he's a villain, but it turns out it's far more complicated than this). I highly, highly recommend this if you like watching people fight and struggle but also create bonds and relationships that last a lifetime. Best way to categorize this masterpiece would be as an adventurous fantasy romance. It certainly gives you chills, in a good way, and toys with your emotions. I highly recommend watching.

PS: The squirrel eating meat and fish was creepy though. I don't know why they had to do it. I don't remember this being the case in the manga. I mean, it's a freaking squirrel. Give him some nuts instead.

made me fall in love with many wonderful boys
zhoobin-m27 October 2017
I swear I'm not gay, but the boys are just so wonderful.

This technically qualifies as a reverse harem anime, but it is a good one. Yona is easy to relate to, yet strong, and serves as a great vessel for an idealized version of the viewer. The main supporting cast is full of wonderful boys. They will make the viewer think "why can't all men be like these guys?" they have a very diverse set of personalities, and the writers did a great job of making them all different from each other, without making any of them a person the viewer would want to avoid. Furthermore, their devotion to Yona makes perfect sense, given how wonderful she is. Of course she is no Mary Sue, and has plenty of flaws, internal conflict, and character growth.

The narrative is driven by characters, setting, and conflict, as a good narrative should be in my opinion. There are plenty of minor supporting characters, as well as the main ones, and the conflict is ever present. Conflict can come out of anything from multiple characters who want to do the right thing, but having conflicting information from one another, to the occasional malevalent villain.

The biggest problem with the show, however: it only shows the early parts of the story. The full story exists in a comic that the show was adapted from, but no one knows if the rest of the comic will be adapted. PLEASE WATCH THE SHOW! The more popular this story gets, the more likely we are to see an adaptation of the whole thing.

One of my Favorite Animes, Read the Manga to Continue the Story
wingsofwind1399 April 2020
I need season 2! This show stops around the equivalent of volume 8 or 9 in the manga. The manga is still being written. If you like mythology, strong characters, lots of emotions, and hilarious banter, you may enjoy this anime.

A solid start
lrczlnsk2 February 2018
Akatsuki no Yona is a story about a princess who is on a journey to reclaim her kingdom. To do that she needs to reunite the legendary four dragons and do something about poverty and crime spreading through her country.

She also has to deal with her throne usurping cousin, who, as an antagonist, is an intriguingly complex character. Yona herself initially comes across as very sweet but boring, which is one reason why I was a bit reluctant to continue this at first. The other characters, who join her as the story progresses, are much more entertaining than Yona. BUT: this show does not employ an ever repeating formula with no character growth and a never changing status quo. Yona does grow and changes as she realises that she has lived a sheltered life, which made her ignorant of the troubles that she now faces. And as she slowly gains this realisation she starts to do something about it and works on herself. Which is honestly so damn enjoyable to watch and excuses the rather slow progress the show makes in the first season.

As it is now, the story has only just begun and the first season only collects all the main characters, which does for a sometimes uneven pace. This is one reason why I'd say that this isn't a perfect anime. Another reason is the animation. I personally find it somewhat lacking, the fight sequences especially are rather mediocre. The soundtrack is fine and so is the art style, but a more dynamic animation would have made this so much better, given what a suspenseful material it is trying to illustrate.

There is so much potential though and as the manga readers know, this is going places! So I truly hope that Yona gets a second season.

Yona of the Dawn
Tweekums31 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Princess Yona has lived an easy life at the palace then on her sixteenth birthday her world is thrown upside down when her childhood friend Soo-won kills her father and seizes the crown. She manages to escape with her bodyguard, the formidable Son Hak; life will no longer be easy for the princess. Fleeing to Hak's home village an oracle tells them a story about how the first king united the kingdom with the help of four legendary dragons. The oracle's assistant, Yun, joins Princess Yona and Hak as they set about searching for the dragons. As they find each they will have to face difficulties and genuine danger. The dragon's aren't the beasts one might expect; rather they are men imbued with great strengths; each distinctive from one another and not until she has recruited all four can she return and try to reclaim the throne.

This anime proved to be a real surprise; I expected the usual mix of fighting and humour and while both are present what we really get are a great set of characters. Officially this is a shoujo series but while watching I never really thought about it that way despite the fact that there are clear 'reverse harem' elements as Yona surrounds herself with an ever-growing band of attractive male companions… this is a series that can be enjoyed by anybody regardless of gender. The characters are all distinctive both in appearance and behaviour and the good guys are all likable. There are villains we meet along the way and while some are detestable Soo-won, the main antagonist, is a bit of an enigma; perhaps he isn't quite as bad as he seems… in a later scene he meets Yona and does nothing even though she is vulnerable. The story is nicely paced over twenty four episodes although as the final episode ended I couldn't help but think of Churchill's words, "This isn't the end. This isn't even the beginning of the end. However, this is the end of the beginning"… so hopefully this is just the first season and we will get to see more of this enjoyable story.

Not bad, but far from good.
dederichsjd13 December 2021
Review of the first 6 episodes: Yona of the Dawn, like many anime, starts off a bit bumpy and struggles to introduce the story naturally. The first episodes were all quite predictable. All of the characters serve classic tropes and none really manage to stand out. The animation style is solid for the most part, but the characters are very uncreative and one-dimensionally drawn.

All in all, not bad, but far from being really good.

Edit: I've seen 2 more episodes and decided for myself that I'm not going to continue watching the series. It's definitely solid entertainment, but every aspect of the series I've seen better elsewhere. I'm pretty sure I know where the series is going and would rather spend my time on anime that surprises and excites me. Don't get me wrong, few will regret watching this anime, but few will be truly fascinated by it.

Precious hidden gem
bayanedaissi8 January 2021
Do not underestimate this show like I did. Its amazing to see Yona go from a naive, innocent, sheltered girl to a courageous and fearless soul for the sake of her friends. After losing everything and having a taste of the bitter reality of the situation in the Kingdom, Yona finds meaning in the turn of events. From being protected, to proactive. Willing to learn and change to protect her friends and her Kingdom. At first I thought it would be a cute, bubbly show. By the end of episode 1, the plot made a full turn and I enjoyed every minute of it. The soundtrack was soooo BEAUTIFUL !!! Also so much detail in the story (continues in the manga). A fantasy, adventure, with a handful of comic moments, sided with lots of feels. Love the relationship between Hak and Yona, and how they cherish other. Truly, this story is so dear to my heart. I read the manga and was thrilled to find they made an anime of it, they might even make season 2 (hopefully😭 even though I know whats gonna happen lol). Im looking forward to it! Please!!! // BTW // There's also an extra 3 episodes that you shouldn't miss!! (Akatsuki No Yona: sono se niwa or OVA)

More to come?
chelsiejj15 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Princess Yona grew up loving one man. On her sixteenth birthday that man betrayed her, revealing himself an impostor. Her world is thrown into disarray as she and her guard have to flee her home. Her kingdom on the verge of overthrow from this impostor of a man she thought she knew, princess Yona must find a way to persevere.

When given advice from an oracle, she must seek the four dragons to save and reclaim her kingdom. Each Dragon (with the exception of the Yellow Dragon) has their own back-story, their own character, their own life. Each which she must first help before acquiring their help in return. A little side story if you will.

I quite enjoyed the side stories, and getting to know each of the dragons; though I feel the introduction of the Yellow Dragon was rushed. I'm not sure if episode 24 was the last episode or not, but it felt off balance compared to the others. It was nice seeing the character growth in Yona and Hak. (Though Hak needs to confess already.) I'm still not sure what Su-Won is up too. If there's a season two, I'm not sure where they'd even take the story from where it is now other then the one thing that was mentioned to Yona there at the end.

Would I recommend it? Yes. Give it a try!

Perfect anime. BRING ME SEASON 2 (a minor lil' spoilers that are not actually spoilers)
denizsenler21 June 2021
If you like historical fantasy animes with legends, kings, kingdoms, armies, dragons, very good action scenes and the handsomest! Boys this one is for you. Its sweet, its funny, but it is serious and its heartbreaking. Just the right amount of romance, adventure, humour, tragedy, fights, politics, love, and of course badass dragon warriors. The animation is beautiful. Yona has one of the best character developments I've come across in this type of anime. And other characters are so well written overall, they all have their own backstories and motives, no one is shallow or overlooked. Its a well crafted universe. The plot is coming together slowly but beautifully. Nicely done reverse harem where the heroine is not stupid, naive or overly dependent on others around her but instead she can decide for herself and in fact (well, spoiler!) is "the brain of the operation". She is noble, she is smart, she is courageous. We stan Yona.

I dont understand who in their right mind would not continue with the second season, especially while the manga is still coming out and there is enough content for at least another 2 seasons ( anime follows the first 47 chapters and right now there are 208). The story was so good and the first season was left with the cliffhanger so i HAD to continue reading the manga and oh boy what a good read it was. (Again, a lil spoiler) At the end of the season we are introduced to the yellow dragon Zeno and that is the point where the dragon warriors are finally gathered and ready to go rain down hell on Yonas enemies (symbolically speaking). And thats where they decided to stop. Just when things were going to get even more better. Such a shame, the later seasons would definitely be better than the first one. I hope someone will see the potential and set things right. MEANWHILE if you want to continue the journey I highly suggest you read the manga. It's really, reeeaalllyyy good.

P. S. If you plan on reading the manga later, dont watch OVAs because they will spoil the 104-107 (i think so but im not 100% sure) chapters for you. I recommend first reading it and then watching it.

Where is that damn season 2?!
Irishchatter10 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I swear to god, this anime was getting really good that it had to include a stupid cliffhanger at the end of the season. Seriously, it was so unfinished that it had to end abruptly and theres no sign at this stage for a season 2, which is such a shame because it is a likeable anime. Theres a lot of things going on the anime, we have betrayal, a bit of romance, some action, some sadness, etc. I can really see why this is one of the best anime out there and like it is understanding why! Yona really is a great role model of a princess who wants to gain back the throne from the one she thought she loved and managed to betray her by killing her king father. I really wanna see if she becomes queen or not when she faces Su-Won like I have so many questions in my head that need answering urgh! Is he going to marry her, kill her or will she kill him? So frustrating lol......

Although I would prefer if she was with Hak tbh, he was so good to her and defended for her when Su-Wons gang was trying to kill her. I liked how they both found a pack of cute dragon gang lads including a squirrel. Omg that squirrel is so kawaii that I wanna take him all for myself lol!

Really the best anime out there even if it was unfinished, 9/10 I give this wonderful fantasy/ sorta fairytale series!

A Hidden Treasure
chloemcca27 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This is the anime I never knew I needed. Yona of the Dawn is, at its core, a feminist anime, which is surprising considering Yona is a princess. It is a compelling adventure story that simultaneously proves that anime does not have to be about girls finding a boyfriend or taking down an enemy dressed in revealing attire.

The series opens with Yona's sheltered life in the castle. She is simple, and quite frankly, a bore. Although, the most cliché aspect of her life is her budding feelings for her cousin named Su- won, who's handsome, kind, and speaks with a gentle tone. Just when the viewer is about to consider watching a different anime, the boring plot the viewer anticipated is completely reversed. Su-won kills Yona's father in cold blood, and even orders Yona's death before her friend Hak saves her and takes her away from the castle. With this, Yona of the Dawn establishes its unpredictable nature.

After the death of her father and Su-won's betrayal, Yona becomes distant. She completely depends on Hak to do everything as she drowns in her despair. It's not until they are attacked by bandits and Hak is peril that Yona finally breaks out of her shell. One of the bandits grabs her by her hair, and to get away, she takes his sword and cuts it off. Cutting her hair symbolizes the fact that she is leaving her old life behind, helped by the fact that Su-won gave her a hair clip for her most recent birthday. After Yona cuts her hair, she begins to help Hak fight the bandits and very slowly begins the healing process.

One of the most admirable qualities of this anime is the fact that it takes it's time. Yona doesn't get over her father's death instantly – instead, she goes through a lengthy grieving stage with several setbacks along the way. She may have shed her old naivety by cutting her hair, but she doesn't become instantly independent. Rather, she begins to show an interest in learning more about her kingdom and about herself. Yona asks Hak to teach her how to use a bow and arrow, but even that takes time. She's not an instant natural, and is shown practicing across several episodes. The continuity of the show is a welcome reprieve from several other series that ignore certain plot points as the show progresses. In addition, the slower progression of the story makes the characters seem more realistic, and most of all, human. Overall, that's what this show does best. It takes the time to explore every aspect of the characters and show that, despite their diverse backgrounds, they're all people. Indeed, it's a rather unusual message for an animated series to tell.

The rest of the anime focuses on her quest to find the four dragon warriors who are tasked with protecting the Crimson King, of whom Yona is a reincarnation. Every time they encounter one of the warriors, the anime stops and takes the viewer back in time to view the warrior's story. The backstories highlight the most important details of their lives up to this point, and allow the viewer to understand the reasons behind the warriors' actions and personality. This a prime example of the 'show don't tell' concept. The viewer gets to experience the warriors' backstories firsthand, making it far more exciting. This concept is also used to evoke sympathy for Yona and Hak. After Su-won murders Yona's father, the anime goes back in time to explore the childhood friendship between Yona, Hak and Su-won. Witnessing the genuine appreciation the three had for each other makes Su-won's betrayal even more tragic.

Another thing that makes this anime stand out is the complex villain. It is established in the first episode that Su-won is the villain, but as the series progresses, the viewer becomes just as confused as Yona about their feelings regarding his behavior. Rather than being tyrannical, he advocates for good policies and tries to rebuild the kingdom. There are times when the viewer wonders why they hated him in the first place. His voice actor, Yusuke Kobayashi, maintains his soft, gentle tone. It almost seems as though one could forgive him for killing Yona's father because, as it is later revealed, Yona's father killed Su-won's father. Like Yona and Hak, Su-won is only human, with motivation behind every action. Once again, Yona of the Dawn explores every angle of a character, this time even playing with the viewer's moral compass.

In the end, Yona is back on her feet, fighting for the kingdom she loves alongside her comrades. She's no longer a dependent. She can fight with a bow and arrow, and is not afraid to risk her life in battle. And why is she a feminist? This clueless princess acknowledged her helplessness, and slowly built a new life for herself to the point where she could stand just as tall as her male companions.

Type of anime all anime lovers would like to see.
nameeramahvish78 June 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This was literally the best anime I've seen. The characters, the story line, the animation, the soundtrack, LITERALLY EVERYTHING! And one of the best reverse harem anime I have ever watched, after Ouran Highschool host club. :'D And is also, a series that any gender can enjoy.

The main protagonist, that is Princess Yona of the Hiryuu castle goes through a major tragedy as the man who she had loved Soo-Wun, for sixteen years of her life kills her father to become the king himself. Yona, somehow escapes the castle with Hak, her personal bodyguard and also the general.

Over the course of time, she goes through major character development and tries to act strong in every possible way, no matter how hard the circumstances are and even though she doesn't know any misery that the outside world has to offer.

All of the other characters, especially Hak, is very well represented, and not to mention his good looks, he is unbelievably strong and is known as the Thunder Beast, he also often seems to have no chill. And he really needs to confess to Yona already.

The other four dragons were also showed in a very well manner, and are good-looking too, although i really do think that the yellow dragon was a bit rushed.

But, nevertheless, this is indeed the best anime you're going to watch! and I highly recommend that you do!

Meh.
RhysMakesMovies23 February 2021
I don't feel enough incentive to give this show an in depth critique, so here are my thoughts summarized: Found it mostly boring, the show takes forever just to show a reasonably uneventful plot, a chore to finish and didn't even conclude. Did have great chemistry between characters, and did have some great moments.

Possible spoiler info but *VERY* minimal if at all...
dcd117213 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A definite 10 out of 10. Like many anime titles the ending is open in such a way that frankly it can interpreted differently. But it's really the only "downfall" of the entire series. And like so many other fans of the series, I'm hopeful the studio is working on bringing a 2nd season to life - if anything ever deserved it, it's Yona of the Dawn.

Similar to another review, I didn't think of it until they mentioned it but Yona is a bit like Kagome from Inuyasha - she's strong, resilient, intelligent and simply from another time / place...so her journey starts her out as ignorant to the ways of the world she's been thrust into. But she's also a very fast learner and with the help of her protector and friend Hok), as well as the legendary "dragons" she's been directed to find by "the Oracle", Yona grows very quickly into a force to reckoned with while simultaneously, though hiding her true identity, touching nearly every life along the way in some form.

Absolutely worth watching and a solid addition to any collector's shelves.

IN NEED OF NEW SEASON
mraasnn15 November 2023
I've watched this is anime more than 10 times and still reading this ongoing manga. The storyline getting more interesting and fun that you can't stop read it. All the characters developed and grown. Each of them has their own story, how they connect to each other and how they protect each other. Everything slowly come into place.

This anime DESERVE A LOT OF SEASON as the manga already reach 39 vol and more to come. Fan want to see this on screen.

Maybe it's late but I REALLY HOPE that new season will be released and a lot more will for to this anime.

YONA OF THE DAWN DESERVE MORE SCREENTIME.

I NEED A SEASON 2!!!!
megantapley28 August 2023
I originally watched this series a few years ago and fell instantly in love with it. The adventure! The romance! It was just such a wonderful story and so well done. I fell in love with the characters right away. I was sad then that there was no further seasons past the first. Coming back to it a few years later I fell in love all over again. This time I hunted down the original Manga series and have caught up on everything they have published this far. Season one was amazing but the story gets even better!! I would love nothing more than for it to gain the popularity needed for the studio to continue with the anime.
