"'Tis in the Blood"
lavatch7 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A fiercely independent streak would appear to be in the blood of Ross Poldark. In this second episode, Ross remains stubbornly committed to turning a profit on the family copper mine. One of the best scenes is when he persuades a group of investors to finance the new copper operation of "Wheal Leisure."

Another theme of the program is social class. Ross's cousin Verity (sister of Francis) feels that time is running out for her at age 25. Ross accompanies her to a dance ("assembly") in which she meets Captain Blamey. A blame game follows with the captain accused by Francis and Charles Poldark of having killed his first wife. As one character observes, "distinctions and rank must be preserved!"

Ross supports Verity and the Captain. A duel takes place in which Blamey seriously wounds Francis. At this point, the captain feels compelled to withdraw his offer of marriage to the luckless Verity. Demelza helps in staunching the blood and saving the life of the wounded Francis.

While it is announced the Elizabeth is with child, there is the growing connection between Ross and his "maid" Demelza. She is proving her mettle in the household, and there is clearly chemistry between the two characters.

Ross will need all the support he can garner. The precarious mining business suffered a casualty when Lord Bassett, hounded by creditors, gave up the ghost and shot himself to avoid debtors' prison and humiliation. George Warleggan and his unscrupulous banker father will do everything imaginable to stand in the way of Ross's success. But the project of "Wheal Leisure" moves forward!
