Nothing special.
emberstonepierce1 November 2015
As films go, it's not too bad but certainly not as wonderful as previous reviews would have you believe. It's often the case with lower budget films that the acting isn't the best and this is no exception. Although the plot is an interesting one with real potential, it starts out as an interesting concept but just doesn't have the script to carry it off. There were no real 'Scares' or moments that made me jump and I found the films progression quiet formulaic and predictable. I've seen a lot worse, but I've also seen a lot better - It makes a change to see a film in this genre that's free of blood and gore, even though this is a rather average offering at best.

Rise of the Yawn of the Cliché.
Patient44414 October 2015
I've seen this movie more times than I can count. And I can count to infinity! Or so I was told.

Well, I never approved to the sentence "you've seen this movie before", yet, The Inhabitants brings absolutely nothing new on the table. It is the same old story, about a haunted house, where things happen exactly as you would imagine, ends the same and that's about it. Lousy effects, poor acting, weak dialogue, extremely over used plot and most likely 90 minutes wasted.

Without stretching it too far, this particular movie wouldn't scare anyone even in the 70's to be honest. And it is a horror movie!

Cheers!

Boring...but worth a watch...
AndyVanScoyoc2 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I can't really say much about this film that hasn't already been said.

Cliché, done-to-death (no pun intended) storyline, ghost kids, whispers, creaks, things that go bump in the night...blah, blah, blah...

Cool house, nice, dreary setting but I was bored half to death.

Again, no pun intended, but this movie is just like every other haunted house movie and it was so slow going, it was almost painful to sit through.

I still can't figure out the neighborhood grunge and their deal with the house, but...whatever.

It did nothing to help the movie, just added scenery to an already lackluster snooze fest.

Worth a watch for a ghost story, just don't expect much.

Take care of my children
nogodnomasters27 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
A couple buys the March Carriage House bed and breakfast in New England. The house has a history of a midwife hung as a witch for killing children. Soon Lydia (India Pearl) becomes possessed by the home and inhabitants but never becomes as scary as the DVD cover.

Film was rather boring. Nothing new. Made for TV quality.

Guide: No f-bombs. Brief sex. Avoids nudity. Bra/panties/ back shots.

Nothing new or Intresting about this movie. Unfortunately the genre has been done before. But, the true sin of this Movie is the time! Way too long of a movie for the same Cliché endings. Save you precious time on this one.

Better than I feared
RandomTard3 October 2021
It's an ok horror movie with nice atmosphere. While it has a lot of bad things in it, it was still enjoyable. The problems this movie has are mostly about acting and the script. The small act in the beginning, what was that all about - I felt like it was from another movie and had nothing to do with this movie. Then there was the adult smoker kids, why where they in the movie? What this movie did not need, was unneccessary scenes added to it - as it does suffer from slow pacing and it's borderline boring.

Silly, little movie, but with undeniable charm... Probably, because of the great location and very good camera work.Otherwise very slow, not scary and with pretty bad acting.4 stars for this strange charm and for the reason of much worse horrors, unfortunately, out there...

Meh
keepk16 April 2019
I thought this would be a good movie as the cover looked good. All I could say is yawn. It was so boring I kept looking at my phone majority of the movie. It reminds me of The Blair Witch Project but with a lot less horror. Could definitely say this movie was a waste of time.

Limited story telling and low production values
jmbovan-47-16017312 April 2020
So there is a haunting in a bed and breakfast. New owners are impacted. Add the old owner as a source of limited information, and here is the film. Nothing special. Adequate acting at the best and decidedly not that often. There is a small sense of creepiness that doesn't really add to anything overall. Low key presentation and that's about it.

Watchable Low Budget Horror! I've seen much much worse than this! It's worth a try, it has some original ideas, if you don't mind the low quality cameras.

In a nutshell - go this this!
citvprod18 October 2015
In a nutshell - go this this! I was lucky enough to attend a special premiere screening at Somerville Theatre! It is a contained horror film about a couple that acquire a Salem, MA bed and breakfast and soon find it's haunted. While that might not sound like the most original horror story, it's an interesting take on the haunted house concept. It is a throwback to 80s horror films that slowly build to the scares and gore. In a way it reminded me of Ti West's House of the Devil, not the story, but the pacing and tone. Both had an undercurrent of tension throughout. This is a great example of what one can do on a low-budget and still be scary and creative with limited resources.

Small budget horror that still has a few frights
t-dooley-69-38691630 December 2015
The plot is one that has been done before – it is the haunted house scenario where previous misdemeanours still lurk as a stain on the soul of the property. The house here is an old New England home that is now a Bed and Breakfast but used to house an alleged midwife cum witch, child killer.

Enter Dan and Jess to buy the place. Dan has to go on a business trip and when he returns his erstwhile loving wife has turned cold and uncaring. He soon finds out that the house has a few secrets and so sets about finding out what happened in the past to cause such occurrences in the now. The perennial question is always, will he find out before it is too late?

Well the problem with horror is that fans expect an awful lot of a genre where it has basically been done before. It is hard to get a new twist and, even if you do, it then has to translate as 'horrific' or have some truly scary fright scenes. As we become more inured to slasher and gore fests so we tend to want more 'frights' and actually this scored quite highly there.

It actually gave me goose bumps more than once, but it does suffer from lack of characters. We don't get any back story of the couple either or enough time to get some positive feelings for the couple in the 'empathy bank', which means we are not going to care enough when bad stuff happens. The music is good though at atmosphere enhancement but it is started off by being 'spooky' and carried on throughout – we could have done with some variety or the tension starts to become the norm and therefore has less impact. Acting here is fine for a budget film – Michael Reed as Dan being rather good and directors the Rassmussen brothers have made a rather good effort which they say was a labour of love and that comes through. Not the best horror ever but a million blood drenched miles from the worst and for an independent effort there is plenty here to applaud.

The Inhabi... ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ...
tmccull5223 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The listed runtime for "The Inhabitants" is 1 hour, 30 minutes, but this movie is so formulaic, so tedious and boring that it seems to stretch on and on and on. I fell asleep not once, not twice, but three times struggling through this bleak flop. The film is much more depressing than it is scary. I kept waking up and asking myself, "Oh God, is this turd still on?"

I didn't find the acting to be as bad as some of the other reviewers did, but the assertions that there is nothing new to see here is spot on. Haunted house, ghostly possession, spouse eventually pitted against spouse, bleak, entirely predictable ending, blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda.

If you suffer from insomnia, as I frequently do, and you're looking for a way to somehow fall asleep, I give you "The Inhabitants". If you're looking for a good ghost/haunted house/horror movie, look elsewhere, because this one ain't it.

Cheap ... but not bad
kosmasp22 June 2023
Well a bit evil of course - but no pun intended on the other hand. So many things to consider - as always. One of them as mentioned is the budget. Many horror movies have the issue of the money. Or rather they are being made because they can be done without (or rather a low amount of) any money .. same is true here. So if you are aware of that - well you should not have too many issues with it.

It does deliver on some occasions, not being an instant classic or classic in any means of the word. But not every movie has to be or have that high bar. There are movies you just watch and ... well probably forget about. Just don't check in ... well but how would you know right? Another money issue when it comes to where to live and all that ...

A poor movie.
fluffchop24 January 2022
The colors are so drab and dull and since the movie is drab and dull it's extra drab and dull. There's nothing scary about it. It's the usual story that makes no sense. I thought it could have been a much better movie. For example, if he noticed her weird behavior, and read some books earlier in the movie, there could have been a battle to save her. A simple adjustment in writing that would have made it so much better. The bit with the old woman goes nowhere. Sure she's a creepy old bitch but they did nothing with it. She added nothing to the story. It could have been made better using what was already there. Again it comes back to writing and direction, not budget that determines the end result on these things. The production values were good enough, the choice of dim lighting was bad to me. It was a very dull affair to begin with. Why were there children? What happened to the dog? It's just not fleshed out enough to a good movie. It's a poor movie.

One of the best scary movie since The Conjuring
prth_gswm25 October 2015
Before watching The Inhabitants I had almost zero expectations but it turned out to be a super scary ride.I still remember the day when it was first uploaded in a torrent site and i ignored it but somewhere down the line on my mind i had a doubt on my decision because the cover art was looking promising to me then all of a sudden i changed my mind and downloaded it later i realized that my previous decision of not downloading it was wrong. The story revolves around a couple gets more than they bargained for when they buy an historic bed and breakfast in New England only to discover that the old house is hiding a dark secret within its walls. The story sounds familiar to every haunted house movie but execution here is different from the rests. It has a lot of jumps and scares. The creepy atmosphere is terrifying and scary looking spirit backfires.Trust me i found this movie to be one of the scariest movie since The Conjuring. If you love to watch scary movies with not much gore in it then The Inhabitants is perfectly made for you. So what are you waiting for? Just give it a go. Strongly Recommended.

A realistic sleeper
joeldodd17 January 2016
The story develops through regularly-placed reveals of clues and information about the history of the house, but with the absence of direct explanation, so often expected by on-demand viewers the viewer is expected to think, to ask questions and to construct their own ideas about the house and its inhabitants - are they protecting the owners, the house, or their survival? How reciprocal is the relationship between the inhabitants and the owners of the house? The soundtrack is minimalist, although the "spirit presence" chords are overly repetitive. It is hard to find anything truly original, as there are only so many rearrangements of plot details and stories. What we found refreshing was the realistic pace - passage of time, how the characters pass their time is more realistic than many movies. Face it, regular life is mundane and we have our daily routines. It is this aspect that the film captures and that some, who want a succession of revelatory thrills and shocks will sorely miss. Yes, the plot is derivative, but the style is subtle. If you expect CGI gore-flecked action go somewhere else. If you want a more nuanced, human-paced chill, this is worth a view.

Great Horror Film
rfox1411 December 2015
I enjoyed every minute of this film, scary? yes plenty to make you jump. Good acting makes you believe it is really happening and a very atmospheric theme, I don't give out any plots because I think you can read all about the film itself on places like IMDb but suffice to say my review is what I see from an audience point of watching. I listened to it through my headphones so I maybe heard more sounds than the average viewer, good plot jumps in the right places even when you expect something to happen it is still unnerving. Good directing from the Rasmussen brothers {the ward and dark feed}give it a try you may be pleasantly surprised.
