Quotes

  • Simon : [Simon grunts loudly tied up with an extension cord in the yellow vintage chair and breathes heavily]  I'll give you a choice. You let me go right now, and I give you my word that I...

Jessica Crowder : How about I give you a choice? You give me the code to the door, or I'll torture it out of you.

Simon : I'll die before I tell you. But you'll die down here with me, both of you.

Jessica Crowder : [yells]  Tell me!

    [slaps Simon on the face]

    Simon : No!

    [slaps him again]

Jessica Crowder : What is it?

Robin Simmons : [bent over in tears]  Please don't hurt him.

Jessica Crowder : [points back at her with her other hand]  Shut up!

    [softer]

Jessica Crowder : Tell me now.

Simon : The reason that I'd rather die is because I don't wanna live in a world without you.

    [looks at Robin]

Simon : Without *this*; that is how committed I am to this family, Robin. You know I...

Jessica Crowder : [screaming, grabs knife]  Then I'm gonna give you a choice!

    [softly]

Jessica Crowder : Do you want me to cut your left or your right eye first? Hmm? Last chance.

[as she lowers the knife, he puts his face closer to hers, eyes connected]

    Robin Simmons : [hysterical]  No!

[attacks Jessica and they land on the ground, Robin trying to choke her and both screaming and yelling and grunting as Simon attempts to break free]

    Jessica Crowder : Robin! Stop!

[Jessica then gets the upper hand on Robin and Robin has her hand on Jessica's throat and Simon comes and drags Jessica away by her neck and wrist when she is about to hit Robin and pushes her against the wall with a thump]

Simon : You need to accept it. This is your fate.

[her head is up by many degrees but she manages to spit on him; he kisses her lips and left cheek and she lets out mangled cries and he spits back on her and she dissolves into angry sobs, finally putting her hands on her face]

  • Jessica Crowder : [closes the oven and carefully takes some Brussels sprouts with a towel and places them on the counter, fixing the lid, a demure expression remaining on her face and finally removing the lid and placing it on the far left of the counter as Jessica paces]  How'd you get here?

Robin Simmons : The same as you. Simon chose me.

Jessica Crowder : He chose you. From where?

Robin Simmons : [smiles widely]  He was one of my professors. Simon said he

[cut to shot of Simon sitting in front of a thick laptop, a partly-filled glass of wine in his hand and a bottle to his right, audio garbled as he listens via audio feed in the laptop]

Robin Simmons : knew we were meant to be together from the first moment that we met.

[bustling of dishes for dinner can be heard]

Jessica Crowder : How long have you been here?

    Robin Simmons : I don't know... a few years.

    [nods at Jessica]

    Jessica Crowder : Years?

    [softly]

Jessica Crowder : We have to get out of here.

Robin Simmons : No, we don't. This is where we're meant to be.

Jessica Crowder : You're telling me you never tried to leave?

Robin Simmons : When I first got here and I was still... confused. But the codes are always changed and if you try to leave, bad things happen.

Jessica Crowder : What did he do to you?

Robin Simmons : [hesitates]  He just made me understand how much he loves me.

[beeping; keypad is shown and lock clicks and a buzz emits]

    Simon : [sings]  Hell-o-oooo!

    [carrying bags]

Robin Simmons : [still cheery and demure]  Hello, Simon.

[he puts bags on the table]

Robin Simmons : Here's a drink for you, darling.

[comes over and hands him a brown drink, kisses him on the cheek and watches him sip the drink, which he puts down after a few seconds and speaks to Jessica]

Simon : So, I brought you some new clothes.

    [takes out a flowery dress]

Simon : I really wanna see you wear.

Robin Simmons : Did you bring me anything?

Simon : No, not this time, darling. I was focusing on making Jessica feel welcome. You understand, right?

    Robin Simmons : Of course.

[punctuates her words with a short bout of laughter but her demeanor changes slightly]

Simon : And I got you something else that I think you're really going to enjoy.

[unzips a cloth package, revealing a typewriter]

    Simon : Huh?

Jessica Crowder : What am I supposed to do with that?

Simon : Write your book! I wanna support your creative ambitions and this is a place where you can commit to them fully without having to worry about any of the things that women shouldn't have to worry about, like paying a mortgage.

Jessica Crowder : If you think you can hold someone captive but make them happy by buying them a new typewriter, you're crazy.

Simon : What's crazy is the world out there. It's full of lost and weak men and overburdened women and this is our place where we're righting those wrongs.

Jessica Crowder : [softly, amused and incredulous]  By keeping us prisoner?

  • Simon : You've never been more free than you are now; you just don't know it yet.

    [lightly bangs table for emphasis]

Simon : Isn't that right, Robin?

    Robin Simmons : [quickly]  Yes.

    [smiles widely at Jessica]

Jessica Crowder : I don't know what you did to her, but that'll never be me.

    [a beep emits]

Robin Simmons : Oh, well, dinner's ready.

    Simon : Dinner's ready.

[Robin puts cloth napkins at the table]

Simon : Alright, then. Jessica, why don't you come - no, Jessica there and you there - why don't you come join us?

[she stays and her and Simon gaze combatively at each other]

Simon : Well... as this is your first night, I'm gonna allow you some leeway, but in the future, when I ask you to do something, I suggest you do it.

[doorbell rings and he gets up and goes to a viewer and Jessica excitedly moves to the screen, which shows Evan is at the door]

    Jessica Crowder : Evan.

    [screams shrilly]

    Jessica Crowder : Evan!

    [pounds]

    Jessica Crowder : Evan!

Simon : [turns]  You should be thankful that this room's soundproof 'cause if it weren't,

    [mockingly pounds on the door]

Simon : Evan! and he heard you, then I'd have to kill him.

[doorbell rings again and he steps closer to Jessica, who steps back, once again with combative gazes as he continuously steps closer. He turns and does the lock, and the numbers beep and the lock clicks, all which he does while covering the numbers and staring at Jessica. The door creaks open and he holds up a finger to her and slides out the door opening and the sound of a beep and buzz is heard as the door sets and Jessica rushes to the viewer on the verge of tears and Robin demurely sits on the sofa, staring at her]

  • Simon : [the Evan and Simon are standing by the car, a few feet away from the for sale/sold sign]  Your house sold quickly.

Evan Crowder : I'm pretty much giving the keys back to the bank, anyway. Movers are comin' tomorrow.

Simon : Hmmm. You must be keen to put all of this behind you. Oh, hey. Did they find anything out about your friend's murder?

Evan Crowder : No, no. They said it could've been a robbery, but they don't know for sure.

Simon : Yeah. You've had a tough couple 'a months. I'll be sorry t' see you go. But getting some distance will probably be the best thing for you.

    [children shouting in the distance]

Evan Crowder : I hope so.

[Simon nods slightly and Evan looks to him]

Evan Crowder : Thanks for everything, Simon.

  • Simon : [the women are bustling on the table and counter when Simon enters, chuckles and inhales food and Robin looks up adoringly]  Well, that smells lovely!

    [turns attention to Jessica]

Simon : What are we having?

Jessica Crowder : [looking at counter]  Roast.

Simon : Hmm. You look very nice, Jessica.

    [Robin's face falls]

Simon : When someone gives you a compliment, it's polite to respond.

Jessica Crowder : [barely looking at him]  Thank you.

Simon : [walks over to table]  And I have a little surprise for you, too! I got you some of the stories I know you like. Maybe it will help stimulate your writing.

    [smiles]

Jessica Crowder : [unenthusiastic]  That was nice of you to think of me.

    [brings over food]

    Simon : Of course!

    [grabs drink]

Robin Simmons : [earnestly]  How's the drink, Darling?

    Simon : It's fine.

    [turns attention to Jessica]

Simon : Jessica, it looks like you went all out.

Jessica Crowder : I'm not sure how it'll taste.

Simon : Well, I appreciate the effort.

[they look at each other and then Simon grabs a large knife and fork and presents it to her]

Simon : You made it. Why don't you carve it?

[his face challenging, he gives her the utensils handle side toward her and blade toward him as suspenseful music plays and her eyes are on him as she slices through the meat slowly and puts it on his plate]

Simon : Well, would ya look at that?

[concentrating on his meat, Jessica calmly lays the utensils down and goes to the counter and grabs a pan and hits him on the head with it]

Robin Simmons : [cries out]  No!

Jessica Crowder : [hits him again]  Ah!

[he grunts softly as he hits the floor]

    Robin Simmons : Stop! Oh!

[Jessica just looks at Robin as she walks away]
