Over the 21st century, Bollywood cinema has entered into a completely different era of filmmaking and storytelling than was being made in the decades prior. Actors and directors who started their careers in the ‘80s and ‘90s have experienced such a drastic shift from their beginnings to what they are doing now that their older works seem almost archaic and unrecognizable. This has led, expectedly, to many of Bollywood’s artists making self-reflexive work that also reflects on the industry in general––Fan, Sanju, The Dirty Picture, Luck By Chance, and Shamitabh are just a few examples. Vikramaditya Motwane’s Ak vs Ak is the latest and best of the lot.

Amitabh Bachchan's last release that was directed by R. Balki didn't quite make the cut at the box office. However, despite the film's low key response, we hear that Bachchan will soon be seen working with the director again for their fourth collaboration after Cheeni Kum, Paa and Shamitabh.
While we know that Bahchcan will be teaming up with Balki, the interesting part is that joining them will be none other than Jaya Bachchan who were last seen sharing screen space in the 2012 Bhojpuri film Ganga Devi that was produced by their make-up man, Deepak Savant. However, for those of you who think it will be yet another Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, we hear that their roles will be restricted to a cameo that will be wrapped in a two day shoot. If that wasn't enough, we hear that the two actors will be seen playing themselves, a superstar power couple.

Now, from what we hear, Amitabh Bachchan will be a part of this film too and has been roped in to do a cameo. R. Balki and Amitabh Bachchan's much anticipated third outing Shamitabh turned out to be a box-office disaster. But, they are all set to collaborate the fourth time for yet another clutter-breaking film, a la Cheeni Kam, Paa and Shamitabh. Speaking on director R. Balki's insistence that Shamitabh was a homage to the Bachchan voice, Amitabh Bachchan protests, "Shamitabh was no such homage to my voice. It was an element of the voice in the story of the film that was projected. My voice is no great shakes to be paid homage to. I will not accept that." Amitabh Bachchan graciously accepts Shamitabh's failure. "The film has not done well at the box office because the audience did not like it, period! For me, my work is the most enjoyable and comforting experience. Challenges are there in each project that I have done and shall continue to be so.

After lending her voice to two successful songs this year – Joganiyan for Tevar and Sannata for Shamitabh, Shruti Haasan has finally lent her voice to a song picturized on her for her film Gabbar. What’s more incredible is that this talented actress – musician recorded the song in one hour flat without any breaks!
A source said, “Shruti was shooting in the village of Pollachi for one of her films. This is one of 6 films of Shruti’s line up that releases this year. Amidst her films schedules and her numerous brand shoots, she had just half a day to complete this recording. After a 2 hour car ride to Coimbatore and then a flight to Mumbai, Shruti landed and went straight into the recording studio. She had prepped the song in advance and had worked on the voicing so that she can maximize her output at the studio and that’s exactly what happened.

It’s just the 2nd month of the year and Shruti Haasan has already walked in owning it. After her six film line up announcement in Hindi and South, she also made a huge musical impact with two diverse tracks for two leading films – Joganiyan for Tevar and Sannata for Shamitabh. And now, she’s getting set to have her third track for the year released – this time for her own film Gabbar opposite Akshay Kumar.
It is believed that the song is a modern day love song with a very edgy rock pop vibe. The song is apparently very different from Joganiyan the romantic ballad and the quirky rock track Sannata but promises to be as popular as the first two songs for the album.

Yes! Indeed, Mr Bachchan was now centre stage.
However, it was not just the audience who felt emotional. It was moving to clearly see the legendary super star touched by the loving admiration he received upon reception. R Balki always comes up with interesting story ideas and casts Amitabh Bachchan in interesting roles which almost always never fulfill the promise of the quirky premise and stay limited to the quirkiness of the premise. When we first heard about the cast of Shamitabh we were terribly excited because one of our favorite actors Dhanush was joining Amitabh Bachchan Read More...

Amitabh Bachchan has been enthralling the nation for over decades. With his impactful voice he has narrated some of the most unforgettable dialogues in the history of Indian cinema. The legendary actor is now all set to lend his voice for the first time ever in his upcoming film titled Shamitabh.
The film has been successful in creating the right buzz as the trailers have received an incredible response with the audience and fans looking forward to watch this R. Balki directorial. For promoting the launch of the second trailer of Shamitabh, the makers had recently executed an interesting activity titled ‘Aap Bhi Shamitabh’ to engage the audience and Amitabh Bachchan’s fans.

Dhanush + Amitabh = Shamitabh. Now its fine to think the obsession with Amitabh Bachchan’s voice has hit a new level with R. Balki making a movie revolving around it. The trailer tantalizes you with this obvious fact. But just like Dhanush’s ( i.e. Balki’s) reason behind the choice of name, there is something deeper behind the simplicity. Foundation set, now add the curiosity that is the debut of Akshara Haasan and the return of Dhanush Karthikraja after the success of Raanjhanaa. And may be some cameos of so many celebrities for good measure. Expectations high you say? Well, unfazed by all the hype, R.Balki takes us on a stroll, keeping his eyes set on his target. A film you can kick back and enjoy.
The story is this. Daanish (Dhanush) is small time boy that dreams of it big in Bollywood. He can blow your mind if you give him a chance.

Akshara Hassan surprised everyone by making her presence felt in R. Balki’s soon-to-release Shamitabh. While the whole nation was under the impression that the younger daughter of Sarika and Kamal Hassan was more inclined to direction than acting, it was a rather pleasant surprise to see Akshara facing the camera for the very first time.
When quizzed Akshara about how she landed up getting this role, she revealed that she never had to audition for it and R. Balki approached her out of the blue. She says, “Balki Sir and I met at a function, and he came up to me ‘Hi Akshara, can I talk to you for 5 mins?'” While Akshara got excited thinking that’s she might get the opportunity to assist the maestro before he revealed that she has been approached to play a character in his upcoming film. Quite stunned by the question, Akshara excitedly heard the script.

Shamitabh is the sole notable release of the week and should take a decent opening at the box office. while the promotion hasn’t gone overboard, the kind of brand value that the combination of Amitabh Bachchan and R. Balki carry, courtesy Paa and Cheeni Kum, ensures that this would be yet another quality film in the offering. One thing that has always worked for films coming from the house of Balki and Gauri Shinde (English Vinglish) is originality. In that aspect, even Shamitabh is expected to deliver since it has a novel subject to it. Moreover, with Dhanush and Akhshara Haasan, there is freshness in cast too.
Eros is giving the film an optimal release, which means opening day occupancy of around 40% would ensure that good word of mouth results in decent momentum over the weekend. Since it is a solo release of the week and the only competition...

Though the Amitabh Bachchan, Dhanush, Akshara Haasan starrer Shamitabh did not face a lot of censor struggle, the film recently got a U/A certificate but with a few cuts. The film, which deals with the egos of two men, has been given the green signal by the Censor Board of Film Certification but at the same time, the authorities have asked to cut a few expletives from the film. The use of certain abusive words like m*******d and b*******d have been asked to remove and the makers have been asked to replace them with other words. The new chairperson of Cbfc Pahlaj Nihalani has maintained that all films that will be using cuss words will be facing strict censorship and now, most of these words in the dialogues of Shamitabh has been asked to do away with. Also, certain scenes like the one where Dhanush is seen...

The Bachchan Baritone just got bigger. On Feb 15 when India plays a cricket match against Pakistan at Adelaide, Amitabh Bachchan will be doing the commentary alongside stalwarts of the cricket-commentary world Harsh Bhogle and Kapil Dev. Confirming this astounding change of pace for India's best-known baritone, filmmaker R Balki says, "Mr Bachchan's voice is the star of my film Shamitabh. The plot revolves around the baritone. I personally feel-and there are millions who will agree with me-that there is nothing that Mr Bachchan's voice can't do. He has done voice-overs in many feature films and has also lent his throat to documentaries and social causes. The one thing that he hadn't done was cricket commentary." Apparently, the idea of getting Big B to do something so universally appealing as cricket commentary is a double strategy. It not only serves as a great promotion of Shamitabh, it also binds the two warring nations together.

As we have been telling you, Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan was in London for a whistle stop tour this week to promote his new film Shamitabh, released by Eros International on 6th February 2015.
The Big ‘B’ was joined by co-stars Dhanush and Akshara Haasan. Shamitabh, is a tribute to the powerful and legendary voice that has made Bachchan one of the most widely recognised actors across the world.
The Big B’s visit took an unusual turn as he found himself of the set of Sky Living’s new reality show Desi Rascals, which happened to be filming in the very same hotel that he was staying in! Entering the restaurant for a quiet well deserved break, Mr Bachchan found himself the centre of attention as Bollywood super-fan Arshina instantly recognised the star… fans can watch her reaction and the first ever appearance by an Indian film star on a...

To celebrate the release of the much anticipated film Shamitabh, BollySpice managed to catch up with two of the leading stars, Dhanush and Akshara Hassan. Both the lovely actors spoke about the film, their experiences of working on the project and how they hope it will be received out upon release. Enjoy!
Q: What was your reaction when you first heard the script?
Akshara: I’ll tell you how I got the script actually. I remember there was a function with Balki Sir and he said to me ‘Akshara do you have 5 minutes to spare?’ And I said ‘of course’ and I was really excited. So he said to me ‘I have this film I am making and there is this character I have you in mind for.’ And I said ‘are you serious’ and was thinking in my mind ‘oh my gosh’ and this is a real honour.

Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan, South Indian star Dhanush and Bollywood debutant Akshara Hassan attended a UK press conference on Tuesday morning to promote the upcoming comedy/drama Shamitabh. The press conference took place at the 5-star Taj Hotel in London, where the cast spoke about the film and more ahead of its release on 6 February.
Speaking about the film, Mr. Bachchan said the following: “A lot of people have been intrigued by the title and the fact that my name and Dhanush’s name has been incorporated in the title means that it has been done for some kind of sensation. That’s not true because Shamitabh comes from the script of the film and when you see the film you will know why it’s there. The other thing that can be said is that I will be giving my voice to Dhanush as a character in the film.

Legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan will consolidate his position as the king of social media by recording a record-breaking podcast for the Apple’s Meet The Filmmaker series at their flagship store in central London today, on January 28.
The actor, who has arguably the biggest presence on social media out of all the Indian movie stars, will record a podcast for his soon to be released movie Shamitabh. It will be made available to more than 800 million iTunes users around the world for free.
This is only the third ever Bollywood podcast that Apple have included in the popular series. The first saw Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra get interviewed for Krrish 3 and second had Vishal Bhardwaj and Shahid Kapoor talking about their movie Haider. The Shamitabh podcast with Amitabh Bachchan would eclipse the previous two in terms of reach and will be the first time an Indian movie star has been interviewed solo.

On Republic day, Amitabh Bachchan had double reason to celebrate. Not only had the Government Of India conferred the Padma Vibhushan on the super-iconic actor, the Big B's version of the national anthem 'Jana Gana Mana' went viral on the same day. Apparently, it was the persuasive powers of the two filmmakers R Balki and Shoojit Sircar that did the trick. Says a source, "Amitji didn't want to touch the sacrosanct anthem with his vocal chords. But Balki who repeatedly stretches Amitji's self-imposed boundaries insisted and even got Shoojit Sircar to shoot the anthem at Rabindranath Tagore's birth-place." Incidentally, Balki and Shoojit are close collaborators. The latter has directed several ads for Balki's production company. Balki and Shoojit are also the directors of the Amitabh Bachchan's next two releases Shamitabh and Piku. Says Balki, "Shoojit was the right person to shoot Amitji's rendition of the national anthem because we...
