As she progressed in her burgeoning career Emma Branderhorst was pulled to direct a film which not only suited her style but which she had an emotional connection to. Ma Mère et Moi (My Mother and I) came to fruition after she bravely pulled out of a project which she didn’t feel entirely invested in and is a reflection of her passion for filmmaking and telling stories which mean something to her. Ma Mère et Moi follows Kees and her mother on a road trip from the Netherlands to France where their incredibly strong, but perhaps unhealthy, relationship is about to change irrevocably as they part ways. Branderhorst has a strong focus on character driven films which sees her draw you into the worlds she creates with close-up camera work and her personal unflinching gaze. Branderhorst was first featured on Dn with her Oscar-qualifying short Spotless, an impressively forthright...

In the nearly seven-decade history of the Primetime Emmys, there have only been five instances of a series netting three Best Comedy Supporting Actress nominations in the same year. This precedent was established in 2004 by “Sex and the City” ladies Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon and was then emulated in 2017, 2018 and 2021 by various trios from “Saturday Night Live.” This year, Sarah Niles, Juno Temple and Hannah Waddingham of “Ted Lasso” added their names to the list. The latter two previously vied for the 2021 prize, which went to Waddingham, while Niles stands as the only Emmy newcomer in the group.
Niles joined the cast of “Ted Lasso” in its second season, which originally streamed on Apple TV+ from July to October 2021. Her character, sports psychologist Dr. Sharon Fieldstone, was hired during the season premiere to help the AFC Richmond team out of a collective funk. Her episode submission, “Headspace,...

The increasing demand for original film and TV content has resulted in players targeting earlier stages of the production process. Now talent agencies, in both the U.K. and the U.S., are arriving earlier to the dance.
The latest agency to dive into content creation is The Artists Partnership (Tap), which is launching The Development Partnership (Tdp) with a slate that includes a new take on Cyrano de Bergerac from Joseph Fiennes, a drama series with Anna Friel and a film project about a real-life con man, with James Norton.
Tap, which is part of the Marcus Evans group, aims to focus on nascent development; its new sister operation, Tdp, is working with clients from the main agency and its book-to-film department, then going out to find production partners. The Tdp team is aware that there are some sticky questions over agents getting into production – the effect it has...

Liam Garrigan, who plays King Arthur on Once Upon A Time, will again play the character in Transformers: The Last Knight.
Transformers: The Last Knight seems to be shaping up as a different kind of entry in the ultra-lucrative film franchise. Currently in production, director Michael Bay’s fifth go with the protean anthropomorphic automaton film series is taking the world-wrecking rampages into the intriguing expositional corner of Arthurian legend. In fact, the film has just cast an actor to play the ancient lore’s fated eponymous regent himself.
According to Mashable, the one and only King Arthur Pendragon is, indeed, jumping into the Autobots vs. Decepticon drama of Transformers: The Last Knight, seemingly confirmed with the reported casting of Liam Garrigan for the part. Of course, fans of ABC’s Once Upon a Time might be surprised to hear that, seeing as Garrigan already has been...

Fans of Brendan Coyle know him as Downton Abbey's lovable gent John Bates, and now, criminal boss Nelson Clay in Spotless, but what do we know about Brendan Coyle, the person? While sitting down to chat with E! News about his new dramedy on Esquire, the 51-year-old Irish/Scottish actor opened up about a personal matter—his father's sudden death. Coyle, who worked at a family butcher shop when he was younger and was only 17 years old at the time of the tragedy, recalled how his father's death was what motivated him to take a leap and pursue acting. "It's a bit weird. It's an awful thing to say that the death of my father was the catalyst for me to get out of town and move on, but it...

Brendan Coyle entered our hearts by playing the ever-so-devoted gentleman John Bates in Downton Abbey, but he's taken on an entirely new beast with his latest project. The 51-year-old actor stars in Esquire's first original scripted show Spotless, where he plays Nelson Clay, a ruthless crime boss who ends up flipping Jean's (Marc-André Grondin) world upside down, so when Coyle sat down with E! News to chat about his new role, there was one obvious question—what's it like going from Mr. Bates to Nelson Clay? "A lot more fun, because I'm a huge fan of subtext and Bates was very interior and internal and subtextual," he tells us. "You weren't quite sure what he was...

Get ready to get gritty. Esquire's first original scripted show Spotless premieres tonight, and ahead of experiencing the dramedy on the small screen, E! News sat down with the star, Marc-André Grondin, to talk about the highly anticipated series. "There's a lot of things that drew me to this part and this project in general," Grondin, who plays Jean Bastiere, tells us. "I thought he was a very interesting character and I felt like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders, and every time he was making a decision, it wasn't necessarily the bad one or the worst choice he could make, but it still necessarily wasn't helping. He was just burying himself into more lies and...

Spotless, Esquire Network’s first scripted series, is actually a show that has been acquired from Canal+ in France, where the series first aired earlier this year. So while not technically “original” for the network, it is definitely worth checking out. Co-created by Shameless (the British version) writer Ed McCardie and CSI producer Corinne Marrinan, the series combines elements of those two shows in unique ways, throwing in dark humor in some of the grimmest of situations, usually murders and other crimes. The show also resembles Dexter and Breaking Bad in ways, with some gruesome scenes not for the squeamish, as … Continue reading →
