Cute and sweet

This was an enjoyable, cute and funny movie. Not the greatest, but fun enough. I'm sure that some will compare this to My Big Fat Greek Wedding and some comparisons are apt.

Maria is beautiful, and charming and extremely quirky. And she snores. Jack is one of those earthy guys who doesn't let anything go by without making a joke. Maria's family is very traditional. Her father would be tough on any man.

This movie is about the two falling in love, and about trying to make it work in a family where everything is stacked against Jack from the start. The two have so many differences that you would think they would be better off with someone else.

There are funny moments, and sweet moments.

Struggling TV writer Jack is alone in a diner when he's surprised by his ex and her new boyfriend. He is rescued by Maria who pretends to be his date. They have a cute first date that night as flashforward clips show their clashing lifestyles living together in the future. He struggles to fit in her superstitions and her large Portuguese family.

This is My Big Fat Greek Wedding without the comedy writing or experienced comedic actors or good chemistry. The lead couple has pretty on their side but they don't have great comedic skills. They aren't the best and the filmmaking is amateur hour. The family does have the great Joaquim de Almeida playing the patriarch. The culture clash with the old country style family is the best part of the writing but it's not enough to fill out the movie. This has good ambitions but inferior execution.

Cute but with problems

Saw this last night - couldn't finish it. I like rom com's and I understand they can be contrived but this was just too awkward and clumsily written. I couldn't get over how stiff the acting was by the male lead - it's not often you notice bad acting and I had to look up the movie online (that's what got me here) and then read the back story that they wrote the movie and are actually married. That explains it. No way he would have gotten a callback if he had auditioned. Sorry but his acting really ruined it for me. B

The story is cheesy and the acting is horrible

The story is not even close to being average. On top of that the acting was horrible from the lead male actor. These combination made watching this an unpleasant experience.

The title itself was a red flag but I still decided to watch this anyway. And not to my surprise, I ended up completely wasting the time. Amid this chaos the only positive thing was the acting of Jeannette Sousa. She wasn't annoying like the people around her.

My suggestion is....there are tens of thousands of better movies out there. Go watch those.

Can't watch it because of bad acting.

Seriously. I don't think I've ever seen less believable acting that Ryan Scott's. Within 10 minutes I'm annoyed with every line he utters. It's wooden and stiff... It's just bad acting!

Jeannette Sousa isn't all that bad, but also not really convincing.

I bet the story line is somewhat fun, but I just can't stomach it. Do not recommend.

Horrible movie. I am Portuguese and that is definitely not how portuguese people are. Terrrible acting. One of the worst movies I've ever watched, couldn't even finish it.

Worst movie I have ever seen

Boy meets stranger in cafe. Boy fantasises about sleeping with her, her moving in with him, her rearranging his stuff, him meeting her parents, fighting with her parents. After each daydream, we find that he is really still in the cafe, he was just fantasising. After 19 minutes, I was brain dead. That is 19 minutes of my life I will never get back.

Fools Rush In

Chance meeting. English speaking mail meets foreign language speaking female. Her family is a big obstacle for both of them. They split up and I don't want to ruin to movies for you but you could switch to Fools Rush In and see the same movie in a different location more seasoned actors

Clever writing, great acting, great ending

This movie gets better and better as it plays. Some very funny lines and a great ensemble cast. Bravissimo!!

Great RomCom Flick!

I've only watched this movie last night on a rental cd.

From the cd cover itself, I expected this to be somethin' like a romance scene in Venice Canal - ah, you know what i mean. And I was wrong! ( I like to be wrong on my movie expectations. Je-je-je! ).

This is a unique rom-com. ... funny, romantic, sentimental, dramatic with a hint of reality.

One thing that amazes me ... I never thought Portuguese are this conservative and superstitious.

I really am not familiar with the actors/actresses in this movie. But they played their parts very well. From the main characters, to the girl's family, the the guy's side kick and even the fortune teller - I'd really say their acting is awesome!

Watch this people. You'll thank me when you do.

A nice comedy, fresh, inspired, full of interesting ideas, with good dialogue (and small budget). You might not recognize the exteriors because it's not US but Canada (Toronto).

And the Actors playing the two main characters (Jack and Maria) are Canadians too. They also wrote the script and produced the movie, together, and truly are husband and wife in real life. Which is nice and interesting at the same time. As it is movie's flash-forward structure, which adds to production's overall quality and originality.

Many good actors help to keep the attention high, starting from the great Joaquin de Almeida (who really is Portuguese) to Vik Sahay. Singer Nelly Furtado plays a nice cameo (Nelia: Maria's favorite cousin…) and the musical score includes one piece I like and it's poorly known: 'Ticket to Love' from the Hawaiian band 'Goodbye Elliott'. Enjoy.

My wife and I loved this movie! The Characters were very realistic and the family is very much like a Portuguese family that I know. The script was witty and the acting by Ryan Scott and Jeannette Sousa was excellent! The dog in the movie was very funny! Joaquim De Almeida was very believable as the father. I have seen him in many movies and this role was very different for him. We thought it was funnier than My Big Fat Greek Wedding! I have heard that this was a low budget film but I did not feel that it was low budget. The rain seen was very realistic and the break up seen was very sad. Vic Sahay was very funny as well! We found that we enjoyed it so much with all the characters that it would make a good sitcom.

Excellent must see movie

Growing up close to a lot of Portuguese families it felt so real, they are so funny and from the heart. Excellent must see movie. It was a really good movie, kept me laughing through the whole thing. Such good acting and humor very well done. Thank you for a great movie. When it was done I met the actress, and actor very nice people very well done. I would definitely go to another one of there movies.It was really nice to walk out of theater and see them there to talk us and see what we thought of the movie, great to have gotten a picture with them. It would be great to be able to keep track on how well they do in ratings. People really need to give it a chance you will not regret it. Super funny and very surreal.

What an unexpected surprise

My husband and I were on a holiday and wanted to see a movie. People that we had met on the beach recommended this one highly. We went to it and were very surprised at how funny it was! The script writing was intelligent (which these days is hard to find). The lead male and female were captivating as actors and had a great chemistry. The film was very believable and very very funny. We both had belly laughs throughout the show. The supporting cast was also amazing. The actor that plays the father was awesome. The actor that played Jack was extremely good looking which made the movie even better from my standpoint! We are hoping this movie comes to Canada as we would like to see it again! I know all our friends will love it!

The perfect ROMCOM a MUST SEE

This movie is literally everything. The characters are perfect together and have such amazing chemistry. For the record I have to tell you I'm a bit of a ROMCOM expert.

This one is definitely one to watch.

This movie makes you feel like you are there.

They make you believe that this is how true love happens. And it actually is. "It's when you least expect it. " this famous quote not one person actually invented this quote but I can tell you from experience it is absolutely true.

I'm not going to put any spoilers in this because I really believe that everyone should watch this movie at least once in your life. Don't ever pass it up to watch.

This entire cast is amazing. The acting is exceptional.

I have seen every ROMCOM good, bad, and ugly this cast and their chemistry with one another is just incredible. You really believe that this is her mother and father and family.

It's heart warming, and it does make you feel that this is real because these things do happen when you are connected. The story line is perfect. Especially if you are European decent. This one hits it out of the park for sure.

Surprisingly good

I started watching it without any expectations - just another romcom movie on TV.

I'm not a huge romcom fan, but there are some movies that pop out above others, and surprisingly or not - this one popped out for me.

The story telling was well done, the camera angles, the soundtrack, the jokes, the romance was on point, and the actors were natural. You could literally feel the romance between them, and the diner fragments were very well input into the whole picture.

I don't know, maybe I liked it because I've had a bad romance couple of times and I'm just wishing I can find a woman like Maria, meeting her in the same circumstances and stuff...? Might be.

Yeah, things in real life work much differently, eh? 😏

My rating: 8/10.
