Sometimes the relationships we try to hold onto the most hold us back forever in the worst possible way, and it isn’t until we recognize that and decide to unshackle ourselves that we can truly be free. In this episode of CW’s Gotham Knights, the amateur crimefighters deal with some personal demons and past traumas by reevaluating their relationship with their respective parental figures, and while that may be liberating to some, others get even more entrapped in their deplorable existence.
In the previous episode, Rebecca March was revealed to be the true leader of the Court of Owls all along, as she murdered her own son, Brody, after knowing that he had learned too much about the Court from Stephanie Brown. The March couple contemplates tying up loose ends by taking care of Stephanie, and unbeknownst to Rebecca, Lincoln resurrects his dead son using the Electrum. Meanwhile,...

The horror genre often derives much of its appeal from playing into expectations and generating visceral terror at the same time. That’s certainly the case with “Stephanie,” a more-than-competent entry in the creepy kid subgenre that doesn’t break new ground but manages to find its footing anyway. Directed on a microbudget scale by “A Beautiful Mind” screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, the movie never crystalizes into the ominous extremes of “The Omen” or “The Bad Seed,” but it nevertheless develops a prevalent eeriness around the chilling performance of a young child.
That would be the titular Stephanie (Shree Crooks, the youngest member of the anarchistic family in “Captain Fantastic”), who spends most of the movie entirely on her own in an empty house. After a bizarre and somewhat cheesy opening segment set in an inexplicable dystopian future, the movie flashes back to the disquieting story of Stephanie, who inhabits her...

Akiva Goldsman may be best known as an Oscar-winning screenwriter whose credits include “A Beautiful Mind” and “Cinderella Man,” but he appears to have found a second act as a horror director. Max Winkler’s “Flower” is nothing if not a coming-of-age story, but it’s explicitly clear from the very first scene that the film’s teen characters have already lost their innocence a long time ago. We open in the front seat of a cop car, as 17-year-old Erica (“Before I Fall” star Zoey Deutch, acing another tricky lead role) gives a dispassionate blowjob to a uniformed police officer. Not that she doesn’t enjoy giving head — Erica has a sketchbook filled with immaculate drawings of every penis that she’s ever put in her mouth — but, like just about all of her sexual encounters to date, this hook up is purely transactional. When the cop asks her where she learned to suck dick like that, Erica bluntly replies: “Middle school.”
It’s a simple grift, and one that’s never played for titillation: Erica uses her jailbait charms to...

The already-incredible line-up for the 2016 New York Film Festival just got even more promising. Ang Lee‘s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk will hold its world premiere at the festival on October 14th, the NY Times confirmed today. The adaptation of Ben Fountain‘s Iraq War novel, with a script by Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire), follows a teenage soldier who survives a battle in Iraq and then is brought home for a victory lap before returning.
Lee has shot the film at 120 frames per second in 4K and native 3D, giving it unprecedented clarity for a feature film, which also means the screening will be held in a relatively small 300-seat theater at AMC Lincoln Square, one of the few with the technology to present it that way. While it’s expected that this Lincoln Square theater will play the film when it arrives in theaters, it may be...

Having himself played a hybrid of a vampire and a werewolf in the Underworld films, Scott Speedman is well placed to join the cast of There Are Monsters. Bryan Bertino (The Strangers) is directing, and has also signed up Aaron Douglas, Zoe Kazan and Ella Ballentine for the cast.Details so far are sketchy, but the plot of the film centres on "a mother and daughter trapped and tormented by a ruthless creature". It's probably safe to assume that Kazan and Ballentine are, respectively, the mother and daughter. But all we know about Speedman and Douglas are that their characters are called Roy and Jesse. Do either of those sound like the name of a ruthless creature?Bertino brought us the impressive The Strangers in 2008, but this is only the second time he's directed since, following Mockingbird, which went straight to DVD here in the UK. He wrote an interesting-sounding...

20th Century Fox has scored the rights to Keith Giffen's comic book mini-series "Tag" and have attached "Annabelle" helmer John Leonetti to direct.
The story follows an everyday man 'tagged' by a random stranger and returns home to make a terrifying discovery - his body is decomposing before his eyes. He must figure out the origin of the curse, or pass the curse on to somebody else before it overtakes his body.
The film is expected to change the lead to a woman, and follow a tone that's less straight up horror and more psychological thriller with elements of supernatural horror. Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski ("Stephanie") will pen the script.

Last June, the news arrived that, far from sitting and licking his wounds after the critical and box office pummelling handed out to A New York Winter’s Tale, Akiva Goldsman was leaping back into the directorial fray with a low-budget horror thriller called Stephanie. We now know that Frank Grillo will be starring in the film, though clearly not as the title character.Stephanie, written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski, finds a girl abandoned by her parents at their remote home. She survives on peanut butter and keeping herself sane by chatting to her toy turtle – sane might be a relative word here – a dark supernatural force surrounds her. When her parents return to find her, they discover that the dangerous power has grown: and their daughter is at the centre.Grillo and Blumhouse Productions, which is backing this one, already have a good working relationship after last year’s The Purge: Anarchy.

His directing career may have taken a serious blow with the travesty that was Winter’s Tale, but Akiva Goldsman is still killing it in Hollywood as a writer and producer. He recently did a rewrite of the next Divergent film, titled Insurgent, and upcoming projects that he’s producing include Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur series starter and a planned follow-up to I Am Legend. Now, it appears that Goldsman is going back to the horror genre (he exec-produced the first three Paranormal Activity entries) for his next gig – rewriting Paramount’s The Ring 3D.
Like the first two films, The Ring 3D will find Samara returning to strike terror into the hearts of many with her haunted video tape. F. Javier Gutiérrez, the Spanish filmmaker behind Before the Fall, is set to direct. If he strikes a deal with Paramount, Goldsman will be rewriting a script originally by David Loucka (Dream House,...
