Good Feel For The Running
lapaniamyahoo24 April 2015
As a first time director, Dennis does a nice job of letting us be a fly on the wall as a few of his friends (and himself) take on the festivities and the culture of the running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain. Through his film, we get to understand why some people include this activity in their lives. His subjects include Americans and a Spaniard, so we get less of a Western view, but more of a human view. I also how Dennis touched on the bullfighting aspect of the festival without passing judgement, leaving those tricky emotions to the audience.

The filmmaking is nice, while not being too obtrusive or artistic. Editing is tight, the film flies by (as it should).

Recommend.

Reverent, violent and awesome.
stephany-7119026 April 2015
Using both new and historical footage Chasing Red introduces viewers to the ritual running of the bulls that happens multiple times each year during the Fiesta de San Fermin in Pamplona, Spain. It follows experienced runners and a newbie just learning the running ropes, under the mentoring wing of the filmmaker, learning the best places to stand, how to run, and strategies for when things go badly wrong.

Running the full emotional gamut, this doc had me on the edge of my seat - it was entertaining, exciting, and also scared the crap out of me! Don't think I ever want to ever go watch a running with the bulls in person after some of the scenes here, but won't ever forget - once seen you can't unsee it!

Must See!!!
katyzhill24 April 2015
This film was an up close and personal view of running with the bulls in Spain. The filming was amazing! The film highlighted for men who run with the bulls. You realize how spiritual it is to run with the bulls and you learn about each of the four men personally. I took my ten year old daughter and seven son to see it. Both my kids enjoyed the movie and my ten year old is not determined to go to Spain to run with the bulls. There was very very very brief nudity in the beginning of the film. But it was true to the movie and not disturbing at all. Also, this film shows all aspects of the festival the good, the bad and the ugly. The movie is non-stop gripping and when the credits rolled at the end, I didn't want to leave my seat - I wanted more.

Extraordinary Work by Pamplona Veteran
pnmlaw-6985826 April 2015
Unlike anything ever done before, and with unparalleled access, Chasing Red provides an exciting and wholly accurate film on the Pamplona running of the bulls. Next best thing to actually going to Spain. High quality filmmaking skills abound with frightening and intense sequences of real runners in the streets. Cannot wait to see it again! The thing that most people do not know about is the daily grind to run every morning and get through to the end. Dennis and his compatriots explain this better than anything that I've ever seen. Four very likable running characters make you wish for their safety and happiness, and the joy they find running leaps off the screen. Just an inspirational success by Dennis, especially as a first time filmmaker.

Chasing Red: It's not the bulls you're running from
robharol24 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This film is beautifully shot and captures the essence of Pamplona; her people, the party atmosphere, the strength of the animals and the controversy that surrounds the Festival of San Fermin. If you have never been, the film takes you there in living color. if you have, it will elicit the memories and excitement of your first time in Pamplona.

It would be easy to romanticize this age of old event, but the director did not apply the Hemingway treatment to this Running of the Bulls. It was much more character driven, vignettes of different people, each running for their own reasons and in their own way. Neither were the bulls relegated to second billing in this movie, they are featured in all their majesty, and the film does not shy away from letting you experience their tragedy.

If you have ever dreamed of Pamplona or wondered why this event is so important to Spaniards, this is a must see movie!

'Chasing Red,' Offers an Intimate Glimpse into the Passion and Perseverance of Pamplona's Runners
indiewrap21 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Written and directed by Dennis Clancey, Chasing Red is a 2015 documentary film about Pamplona's Running of the Bulls. This exhilarating event, which has been happening for at least a century, involves hundreds of runners escape from a charging pack of six bulls, often with devastating consequences. The film focuses on 4 runners across the eight bull runs of a single fiesta and as these runners take the risk of injury and death head on, Clancey and his team follow the individuals as they embark upon the adventure of their lives.

The exhilarating action of Running of the Bulls is captured by Clancey in some of the most exciting ways possible. As people start to sprint away from the bulls, Clancey manages to record the action from the balconies above, providing a birds eye vantage point of the chase unfurling below. Interspersed with this is footage from ground zero, where the herd of big, muscular bulls are waiting to charge at a sea of masses. As the bulls zig zag in the narrow streets, hundreds of people start running before them, most saving themselves by barely an inch. Before the bulls are discharged into the narrow alleyways, Clancey is on the ground coaching and advising the runners; apprising them of what even a slight mistake can do to their bodies and their lives.

Chasing Red does not shy away from the blood and it is this raw and unfiltered peek into the crazy world of Pamplona makes the whole experience even better. Nothing is fake here, all of what is shown has really happened and what makes the whole thing even more exciting is anticipating which of the runners will get mauled by the bulls. While it might be apt to call the participants of this event insane, people train for months before the actual event in anticipation of the gruelling physical and mental conditions that they will face in the arena.

Another great thing that Chasing Red manages to accomplish is realising the passion that the masses continue to have for this event. It is hard to fathom that people from thousands of miles away come to Spain each year for this, but they do and they manage to make a big spectacle out of it. From news crews to hundreds of medics, the Running of the Bulls manages to be an event unlike any other on the face of this planet. You must be there to experience it and those who do, are never the same again.

Running (pun intended) at just over an hour, the film manages to summarise the myth and mystery of Pamplona in just about the most effective manner possible. From the mindset of the participants to what happens when things go terribly wrong, Chasing Red is a completely unfiltered and unadulterated peek inside this mystical world; one that will both impress and inspire. The editing is razor sharp and the pacing keeps the audiences on their toes, resulting in a pulse pounding thrill ride that is more akin to an action film chase scene as opposed to a real life documentary.

Exciting, exhilarating and deeper than we thought it would be; Chasing Red is a fantastic insight into the ages old traditions of Pamplona. The film serves as a potent entry point for those who are barely familiar with this event and for the masses who worship and commemorate it, Chasing Red is a celebration of their passion and perseverance. Dennis Clancey has made a magnificent film, one that goes deep into this infamous event, both educating and entertaining us in the process.

Completely captures the runners experience
gmacdon-4211517 June 2016
Chasing Red is the only film i've ever seen that actually captures how it feels to run with the bulls. The mix of camera angles really displays the chaos at street level, the footage of injuries brings home how dangerous this is and it will leave your heart racing almost like the real thing.

As the film follows a set of very different runners with different experience levels it not only serves as a thrilling ride but also as a tutorial on the thought process a runner goes through.

This is a fine, fine piece of work and deserves the awards it has picked up.

Great film that draws the viewer into the adrenaline fueled excitement of Pamplona
jameshorsfall-8285924 April 2015
This movie centres on the action at the week long San Fermin festival or the Pamplona Running of the Bulls, in Spain. It follows the experiences of a group of enthusiasts, some returning practitioners others at their first running. For anyone who has ever been, wanted to visit or simply unsure what the festival entails this film is a must.

The cinematography compels the viewer to engage in the experience, providing a realistic portrayal of the dangers involved in this adrenalin fuelled run.

A thoroughly engaging experience and a lot safer than running on the horns of the Bulls...as you will see!

El Encierro

Dennis Clancey's directorial debut of Chasing Red gives the viewer an excellent insight into the running of the bulls.

I did not know much about the bull run in Pamplona before viewing, but afterwards I can see how it requires a lot of planning and training.

It touches on every aspect of the run including the history, which I would have liked to see more of.

It was nice to see the types of people that want to run year after year. The aerial shots also added a nice viewpoint.

I would love to maybe see a part two in the future and if I am ever crazy enough to run with the bulls, I will be contacting Mr. Clancey!

A must see
mrogers-7264821 July 2023
What I loved most about this piece of work is that it captures the true essence of why people run in the first place. I think most people think that the runners just do it to be macho or to show off. That is so far from the truth and this film captures it. Everyone has their own reason to be there and yet they are all linked by this same 2 and a half minutes of time. Excellent job and I will certainly recommend to anyone who is considering the run or even just wants to understand it. It honestly makes me proud to be in that brotherhood of men and women that have run before me. If you are considering the run, please take time out to give this a watch.
