Wood Fans Should Enjoy It (To a Point)

Nympho Cycler (1971)

** (out of 4)

Misty (Casey Larrain) is tired of her cross-dressing husband (Edward D. Wood, Jr.) forcing her to have sex with his friends so she jumps on her motorcycle and heads across the country where she finds other people she can have sex with.

NYMPHO CYCLER would have been long forgotten had it not been written and directed by the cult figure Edward D. Wood, Jr.. Fans of his are pretty much going to want to watch this thing at least once but there's no question that it's quality is among the worst thing that the director ever did. Yes, I'm being incredibly kind by giving this thing a two-star rating and I have no problem stating that if you're not a fan of Wood then you might as well take away both stars and give this thing a BOMB rating. Fans of sexploitation, porn or just movies in general aren't going to find too much here to enjoy.

For fans of Wood, and you know who you are, you're undoubtedly going to be thrilled getting to see anything the filmmaker did and especially some of the later work, which was considered lost for decades. This film here gives you the added bonus of Wood appearing at the start of the film and there's no question that this quick sequence in the highlight. He starts off in drags, rips his wig and clothes off and then jumps into a hot tub with Larrain. This entire sequence seems to have been improvised and it's actually pretty funny. From this point on there's really not anything overly special outside of seeing Larrain naked.

For the non-fans of the director, the countless issues are going to be easily visible including the fact that the story itself is downright awful even by sex movie standards. There's really no plot and the narration that pulls the film along is silly at times and quite often things happen that make very little sense. The direction is pretty bad as Wood doesn't quite seem to know what he wants to do in any of the scenes and there's no doubt that none of it is sexy or erotic. Even worse is the cinematography, which has to be some of the very worst I've ever seen. We're taking a quality lower than family home movies.

Again, if you're a fan of the cult director then you're going to be entertained by what's here but there's no question that it's quite bad and should be avoided by most.

More early 70's hardcore, Ed Wood-style
Woodyanders14 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Restless love-starved young gal Misty (a lively and lusty portrayal by foxy brunette Casey Larrain) decides to ditch her prissy cross-dressing photographer old man Francis (broadly played to the mincing hilt by writer/director Ed Wood). Misty hops on a motorcycle and hits the road in search of exciting carnal adventures.

Since this is an Ed Wood movie, naturally we get the usual overripe narration, a meandering narrative, wonky sound, and extremely crude cinematography. Fortunately, we also get oodles of tasty bare female skin (luscious lead Larrain in particular looks quite delicious in her birthday suit). The sex scenes are real raunchy and arousing, with a lesbian threeway rating as the definite scorching highlight. The groovy rock film library score hits the funky-grinding spot (a gnarly instrumental version of Santana's "Black Magic Woman" can be heard several times). The ridiculously abrupt ending is a total hoot. Well worth taking a ride on if you're a fan of sexploitation schlock.
