It will make the audience leave in an exodus
darkghost340012 March 2021
I can praise the cleanness of the cameras, the good selection of settings and the general dialog, but otherwise the film falls apart.

While I get the film wanted to distinguish itself from other biblical adaptations, the execution was disastrous. The point the movie wants to get across was not clear at all, while the various plot points of the book of Genesis were shown in a messy way that they fail to convey any consistent message through them. The staging is also poor, as it shows Noah floating on water as opposed to being in the Ark, which makes everything look confusing, or Joseph doesn't change at all when he meets his brothers again.

The fashion/costuming is not good in this movie, since it includes buttoned shirts when they appeared after Christ and pants don't look very sensical for that age, even if pants did exist in Ancient Ages. There are some characters with looks that fit 21th century more, like Adam having a perfectly trimmed beard or young Jacob having a modern classic haircut and a perfect shave.

The acting was not the worst thing ever, but I had some problems with Venus not having too much credibility as the mother of Moses due to the lack of chemistry with the baby, while Avery Merrifield looks weird in a bad way when portraying Adam, although his acting improves when Eve enters the scene and his sadness for Abel's death is decently impacting. The dialog was generally alright, but the emotions weren't conveyed too well in the delivery.

It tried to be artistic and have an identity, but the message gets lost and the film looks pointless in the end. You can see potential, but this adaptation was not very effective.

Story line follows that of Genesis
lrflores1 September 2023
Though the story line keeps true the costumes of the characters lacks. For example the way they dressed appears more like an American Frontier scene, buttons and boots. They did a decent job of bringing the meaning those messages and stories of the beginning to life but visually it was leaving a lot more to be desired.

To bring into a more modern tale that will capture audiences of this age I believe the director and producer should have worked the story line to match up with modernizing the Book of Genesis. This would help the visual representation and lend to the messages found in the Bible.

Not Horrible. Not that Good Either. Jordan Jones was the One Redeeming Thing
simonerunyan2 August 2018
The trailer had me morbidly curious.

"Genesis" wasn't horrible. I think the acting was really pretty good throughout. Jordan Jones did an utterly fantastic job as Joseph. Musical theatre nut that I am, I am all too familiar with "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," and I was almost kind of tired of hearing the story of Joseph. But Jones was so good in this role that I actually found myself holding back a tear or two.

The Adam and Eve story was "sort of" interesting, but I felt like so much more could have been done with it. We are talking about the first two people to ever exist. The writers could have let their imagination run riot with what that might have actually been like. Instead, everything seemed cliche. Adam smirking and then jumping into the pool of water was kind of thought provoking. Was it his first time seeing water? Not sure who taught him how to swim? Perhaps since it was before The Fall, he just magically knew how to do things like that? Eve was unquestionably beautiful but lacking in personality, I think. It was as if she was put in the movie for One Reason Only: To eat that fruit. The rest of her scenes were kind of glossed, I think. Also, who knew that kissing was a "thing" between the first two humans? I had always been taught that came later, when mothers chewed food and passed it to their infants mouth-to-mouth.

A few more observations/questions:

The costuming was horrible, right? Did they have buttons back then? And one of the characters (was it Cain?) looked like he was wearing a thermal undershirt. I'm certain no one wore pants back then either???? And seriously, what was up with some of the male characters being clean-shaven and sporting 21st Century haircuts?

I don't think there was such a thing as white bread back then. (Correct me if I am wrong).

I hated the narration throughout. I don't feel it offered anything to the movie at all.

When Abraham was about to sacrifice Isaac, you'd think Isaac would have put up a little fight. (A tiny one, at least????).

Last, I was able to follow these stories primarily because I was already familiar with them. I think this movie would be confusing to someone who wasn't familiar with them.

Obtuse

Didn't make it past the first 10 minutes, and that's more than fair.

Within those 10 minutes there was no goal stated and no obstacle to overcome. Random unnamed characters were occasionally named after confused acting scenes (and I truly doubt we will see named persons again, they were possibly there for some sense of story establishment). ALL the scenes were confusing.

Female narrator leads the story of Genesis. She is unnamed, don't know who she is, and can't be identified by her character actions/ words/ or those interacting with her, yet she seems to be central to the story--no idea who she is, or even if she is a protagonist, an antagonist, a main character, or if she will stay with us.

Bland and unremarkable
aimeekincaid5 November 2023
No character development. No original text. Some attempt at a poetic narrative rewrite. We didn't make it even 10 minutes.

I think the woman at the beginning was Hagar, but why? You're telling the genesis story from a victim's perspective. Gross.

The plot dragged and did not have any context or explanation. It was entirely disjointed and you have to infer where and who people are. Someone unfamiliar with the Bible would be lost entirely. We turned it off and got The Bible series from Amazon instead.

I don't doubt that there was effort and expense in making this movie, but the oversight of a good script was just too much to tolerate.

Refreshing non religious perspective poetic
infrasonik28 October 2017
Thank you for a refreshing non religious perspective cliché driven hokey story. Instead i have witnessed a child like faith story. Sure the acting is not perfect and it doesn't have all the fleshly appealing CGI but it speaks on a spiritual level...Blessings... Hallelujah we have been restored to the Eternal Kingdom through Jesus Christ.I pray for a part II.

I loved it.
letylares23 July 2020
It exposes what the Book of Genesis already revealed. It is a search for God even though we fail Him everyday. The movie is just a visual effect for it. Nothing Hollywoodly fake. I liked you used kind of normal wear maybe to the epoch,. Not the cavemen rags most movies present. And as someone mentioned it was very poetic. Good for you! I would like to suggest if you can add subtitles. There are a few words I missed as English is not my first language. God bless you all and Ill meet you back in Paradise one day. 💞🏝🌴

"The Book of Genesis" does a great job depicting the beginning of mankind. It's informative and engaging and is a must-see.
