Chicago – Gary Oldman has been generating memorable film portrayals since he broke through in the 1980s. From Sid Vicious (“Sid and Nancy”) to Lee Harvey Oswald (“JFK”) to Jim Gordon (Dark Knight Series), Oldman is a consummate actor. That is expressed in his latest role, as Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour.”
The title refers to one of the most challenging moments of Churchill’s career. Newly minted as Britain’s prime minister in 1940, he faces the onslaught of Adolf Hitler’s attack on his homeland, including the surrounding of the British troops at Dunkirk. Gary Oldman embodies the pugnacious bulldog that characterized Churchill at the height of his power, including the soaring rhetoric that strengthened the morale of the British people.

Update: Corey Feldman named Eighties actor John Grissom as one of the men who allegedly sexually molested him as a teenager during a sit-down chat with Dr. Oz Thursday. William John Paul “Liam” Gallagher. Even his name sounds like a supergroup—some kind of Frankenstein’s amalgam that fuses a continuum of British rock, glass-shattering volume, and a semi-lethal Twitter account. Lord knows he’s packed an entire band’s worth of swagger into one man. Onstage at New York City’s McKittrick Hotel last July for his first American performance as a solo artist, he assumes his trademark position, arms clasped behind his parka-covered torso, crouched in a perpetual stare-down with an audience. He’s flanked by a banner that spells out not his name, but might as well be: “Rock ‘N’ Roll.

Liam Gallagher delivered a seething performance of "Wall of Glass" on The Late Late Show With James Corden Monday. The track appears on the former Oasis singer's new solo debut, As You Were.
Shaking a pair of maracas and sporting both a blasé look and pair of round, Lennon-esque sunglasses, Gallagher sang the steady-rocking tune with a proper sneer in his voice, "You were sold a one direction/ I believe the resurrection's on/ And you were wrong."

Lucrecia Martel. Photo by Darren Hughes.Don Diego de Zama (Daniel Giménez Cacho) is a man out of time. Trapped in Argentina, the land of his birth, and serving at the whims of a foreign crown, he embodies the role of colonizer as a middle-aged, corporate functionary—bored, horny, witless, and incompetent. He waits and waits for a promised transfer to reunite with his wife and child, and then waits some more. When he finally does take action, volunteering to join an expedition to find and kill the notorious bandit Vicuña Porto, this adventure too is folly that ends only in further humiliation.Lucrecia Martel’s Zama resolves few of the episodes she selected to adapt from Antonio Di Benedetto’s 1956 novel of the same name. Instead, she ensnares viewers in a similarly unnerving stasis. Characters enter Zama’s life—three lovely sisters, a visiting merchant called “The Oriental,” the...

Some music acts deserve our full attention because of the legacy that spawned them. And so it goes that former Oasis lead vocalist Liam Gallagher delivers his much anticipated solo long player As You Were (Warner Brothers) on October 6th followed by short tour in selecti cities in North America in November. The songs -- "For What It's Worth," "Chinatown," and "Wall of Glass" (12 million streams!) -- are deservedly getting fantastic press from journalists and public alike. When the Manchaster-based anthem rock band disbanded, the Brothers Gallagher seemed destined for the scrap heap. Could the parts equal the power of the collective? Well, yes and no. Neither brother has released a solo album to rival either Definitely Maybe or (What's The Story) Morning Glory?. I certainly prefer Liam's sneering vocals over Noel's comfortable vocals and Noel's songwriting chops over his younger brother's tunes. Yes, together they were a force of nature.

Liam Gallagher made his solo U.S. television debut with a performance of "For What It's Worth" on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Monday. The track will appear on the former Oasis singer's upcoming solo LP, As You Were, out October 6th.
Gallagher shared the studio version of "For What It's Worth" last Thursday, describing the cut as the most "Oasis-y song on the album." On Colbert, Gallagher and his backing band stripped away some of the track's orchestral elements and presented it as a bare bones, mid-tempo rocker.

Out in theaters this weekend is Phoenix Forgotten, the new docu-style film from Justin Barber that explores the possible alien sightings that happened back on March 13th, 1997 in Arizona, that still have yet to be answered to this day. Co-written by T.S. Nowlin and Barber, Phoenix Forgotten follows three tenacious teenagers who set out to find the truth of the Phoenix Lights phenomenon one fateful night, only to disappear without a trace, leaving their friends, family, and authorities perplexed about what happened to them after they ventured into the desert in search of the truth.
Daily Dead recently had the chance to speak with Nowlin about Phoenix Forgotten, and he discussed the origins of the project, the challenges that come with creating a movie based on real-life events, why he enjoys the sci-fi genre as much as he does, and more.

While it’s been available since last month on DirecTV exclusively, A24 and DirecTV will release The Blackcoat’s Daughter in theaters and On Demand March 31st, 2017. Osgood Perkin’s stunning feature film stars Kiernan Shipka, Emma Roberts, Lucy Boynton, and James Remar, and it explores demonic possession and the tragedy that follows such a horrific presence.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with one of the producers for The Blackcoat’s Daughter, Bryan Bertino, who is no stranger (pun intended) to the world of modern horror. In 2008, Bertino’s directorial debut, The Strangers became a breakout success, taking in over $80 million worldwide and helping to launch his career as both a filmmaker and a producer.

The director of Trollhunter and now The Autopsy Of Jane Doe talks to us about how to make a truly suspenseful horror movie...
The Autopsy Of Jane Doe is a very different kind of horror film. Set largely in one location - a Virginia morgue - it's all based around one mystery: the identity and history of a mysterious dead body. Almost perfectly preserved, pale eyes staring, the young woman's corpse (the Jane Doe of the title) is gradually dissected by father-and-son coroners Tommy and Austin (Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch respectively). And the more layers they peel back, the more troubling Jane Doe's story becomes.

When watching this week’s Designated Survivor, as Seth Wright once again braced to face the White House press corp, I couldn’t help but channel Bill Murray a la Tootsie:

Chicago – Actor David Oyelowo is very familiar with portraying a man of consequence put into a difficult leadership role. In 2014, he took on the role of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in “Selma.” Currently, he is in theaters with “A United Kingdom,” which tells the story of an African prince who led his country to a new mindset in the 1950s.
Oyelowo portrays Seretse Khama, the first democratically elected president of the African country of Botswana. To get to that point, he first had to abdicate his right to ascend as king of the country, mostly because he had met and married a white British commoner (Rosamund Pike) while studying in England. Angering both his fellow countryman and the British government (who was the “protectorate” of Botswana), Khama used the exile as a strategy, and inspired his people through his call for acceptance of his situation and autonomy from colonization.

There are few producers who have had the overwhelming success of Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions from their early days turning Oren Peli’s low-budget Paranormal Activity into a hugely profitable franchise, followed by the equally successful Insidious and The Purge movies. Jason Blum also has an Oscar nomination notched onto his career belt for his involvement in getting Damien Chazelle’s Oscar-nominated Whiplash made, and Blumhouse were involved with bringing Jem and the Holograms to movie theaters. (Sorry, but I actually kind of liked it, even though it bombed… big time.)

Pacific Heat comes to Netflix today. It's a 13 episode series from Working Dog Productions, of which Rob Sitch is one of the founding members, along with Santo Cilauro and Tom Gleisner.
He also voices one of the leads of Pacific Heat, Agent Todd Sommerville, as well as many of the villains of the series. Pacific Heat is an Australian production, built upon characters that have been around for about 20 years. That's important to know because of the inevitable comparison to a Us animated series we know and love.
Sitch took the time to explain a bit about Working Dog, how the characters have come to light, a bit about the humor that inspired them and the animation, as well as what you can expect from the series during a recent telephone interview, in which he didn't mind me taking the silly route, greeting him as Agent Todd Somerville.

There are a good number of directors whose filmmaking styles ooze off the silver screen. From the pulpy Quentin Tarantino to the highminded pretentiousness of Christopher Nolan, Hollywood is never short on unique talent. One of these filmmakers with a particularly noteworthy style is that of writer/director Wes Anderson. The filmmaker first hit it big with film junkies in 1996’s Bottle Rocket, gained a bit more notoriety with Rushmore, and officially hit a new level with 2001’s The Royal Tenenbaums.
Despite the minor speed bump that was The Darjeeling Limited, Anderson went on to create such great films as Fantastic Mr. Fox (his first animated picture) and Moonrise Kingdom. Perhaps his crowning achievement thus far, however, is 2014’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, a heartfelt magical spectacle that was nominated for for nine Academy Awards, and went on to win four, including Best Costume, Best Makeup,...

One of the big questions in Game Of Thrones has been the question of who Jon Snow's mother is -- at least at the start. Not far into the series' run, however, it was clear that having a bastard son wasn't really in character for Ned. And so, the big question of his overall parentage became a thing. Who are his parents, and why did Ned Stark claim him as his bastard -- especially since the idea of a bastard grew to become quite the sore point between him in Catelyn in their marriage? What secrets did Ned take to his grave with him?

UbiSoft confirms its plans to make a movie out of the Watch Dogs videogames...
UbiSoft is overseeing a growing slate of movies based on its videogames, with Assassin’s Creed due this Christmas (starring Michael Fassbender), and Jake Gyllenhaal recently cast in the movie of The Division.
One more you can add to the list? A movie based on the videogame Watch Dogs, that had been mooted previously. However, UbiSoft has now confirmed the project, just a week after it’s formally announced that Watch Dogs 2 will be heading to Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
The reaffirmation that a movie was on the way came at the E3 videogame trade show, although as things stand, actual details on the project are notable by their absence. We don’t know which filmmakers, if any, are attached, or how high up the priority list a Watch Dogs film is.
As you were for the minute, then, until further details finally land. Just we assured that the Watch Dogs film, complete with the hacking of lots of cameras no doubt, is on the way.

Chicago – Quirky Greta Gerwig is at it again (being quirky), and this time she’s looking for solutions in “Maggie’s Plan.” The made-in-New-York-City film has overtures of Woody Allen, combined with “Crossing Delancey.” Director Rebecca Miller (“Personal Velocity”) produces a valentine to all her influences and settings.
Maggie (Gerwig) is a single woman with a “plan.” She will use in-vitro fertilization in order to have a child, given that her track record with relationships is not good. Through her academic work, she meets John (Ethan Hawke), a professor whose shaky marriage to Georgette (Julianne Moore, adopting a Meryl Streep-like accent) is distracting his plans to finish his novel. John and Maggie hook up, and John leaves his marriage to be with her, and their newborn daughter. Maggie now has executed her plan, but was it the right one?

Chicago – Like improvisational jazz, the performance career of Don Cheadle has many moods, directions and shadings. For his latest film, he takes on the titles of co-writer and director, along with the lead role of music legend Miles Davis. This all comes together is the aptly titled “Miles Ahead.”
Cheadle applies a different kind of music biography spin, with a centerpiece story about Davis that operates as a mythical framework for the musician’s life story, told in a loose flashback format. The cinematic structure is jazzy and kinetic, and it moves forward with an energy all of its own, driven by the frenetic soundtrack of the man himself. As a director, Cheadle has crafted something outside the norm, a visual blend that could be at home within the florid sweep of a Miles Davis composition.

See related Bone Tomahawk's perfect shot BoJack Horseman season 4 release date
We'd been waiting for news on season 4 of BoJack Horseman for such a long time that we were wholly unprepared today to learn that it was less than a month away from hitting Netflix. The streaming service announced the return of the dark animated comedy last month, but this incredible news had either somehow entirely slipped us by, or we'd completely forgotten about it.
We worried that some of you might not have caught the premiere date either, so this is just a quick update to let you know it'll be arriving on the 8th of September.
