‘Outlander’ Producers Nab TV Rights to Cork O’Connor Mystery Novels (Exclusive)
Image
Two producers of Starz’s forthcoming Outlander prequel are taking on a different long-running book series for their next TV project.

Story Mining & Supply Co., the production company founded by Jim Kohlberg, has acquired rights to Edgar Award-winning author William Kent Krueger’s Cork O’Connor mystery thriller novels, about a half-Irish, half-Ojibwe sheriff turned private investigator in Minnesota. The company will adapt the books — there are 19 to date, with a 20th set to publish in August — for television and is currently meeting with writers. No outlet is attached yet.

Kohlberg and longtime partner Luke Parker Bowles, a former BAFTA East Coast chairman (and nephew of Britain’s queen consort), will executive produce the project along with Krueger.

The Yellow Birds Ending Explained: Can You Trust The Truth?
Image
Alexandre Moors' "The Yellow Birds" premiered at Sundance in 2017 and received a limited theatrical and video-on-demand release the following year. The film also won the Special Jury Award for cinematography at the festival, and it's easy to see why. "The Yellow Birds" is a haunting look at a never-ending war in a desolate landscape starring Tye Sheridan and Alden Ehrenreich. Both actors give tremendous performances, playing young men whose spirits are crushed by the endless violence and cruelty they're subjected to by the US Army.

Like the lyrical, poetic novel on which it's based, "The Yellow Birds" tells its story via a series of flashbacks, constantly cutting back and forth across several timelines. This occasionally makes the film difficult to follow, especially as the plot moves into its endgame, which explains an event that happened earlier in the narrative.

Further, the film raises complicated questions about truth and memory, specifically...

Tye Sheridan Launches AI-Based Production Tools Startup, With Some Big-Name Advisors (Exclusive)
Image
Actor Tye Sheridan is wearing a different hat with his new media-tech startup — which he claims will let indie filmmakers deliver blockbuster-level VFX on a fraction of the budget.

Sheridan (above right) co-founded Wonder Dynamics with visual-effects artist Nikola Todorovic (above left). Over the last four years, the duo have been quietly experimenting with using artificial intelligence and machine learning to create interactive video applications. Now Wonder Dynamics is gearing up to introduce a new AI production tool that they promise will let independent artists produce dazzling VFX and CGI animations for far less than is required today.

“It breaks down the barriers to achieving your wildest vision,” Sheridan told Variety. “A lot of times people dream up this story but it’s not possible to make because it would cost $200 million. AI can democratize VFX.”

Sheridan, who starred in Steven Spielberg’s “Ready Player One,” and Todorovic have lined...

Threshold of the screen by Anne-Katrin Titze
The Mountain director Rick Alverson: "There's a lot of parallels between the lobotomy and filmmaking." Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze

In the first instalment of my in-depth conversation with Rick Alverson on The Mountain, co-written with Person To Person director Dustin Guy Defa and Colm O'Leary (The Comedy), shot by Lorenzo Hagerman (Entertainment), starring Jeff Goldblum and Tye Sheridan (Alexandre Moors's The Yellow Birds), with Hannah Gross (Michael Almereyda's Marjorie Prime), Udo Kier, and Denis Lavant (a Leos Carax and Emmanuel Bourdieu favourite), we discuss what "interrupting the trigger" means to him, "parallels between lobotomy and filmmaking", a Django Reinhardt number, and the role the threshold move plays. Rick confided to me that he is a "big Perry Como fan" and that he was "reared on all that Disney stuff" when I brought up a scene that reminded me of Snow White.

Rick Alverson on Denis Lavant: "He's more poetic than I am.

‘Dumplin’ Review (Netflix)
Stars: Danielle Macdonald, Jennifer Aniston, Odeya Rush, Maddie Baillio, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Luke Benward, Georgie Flores | Written by Kristin Hahn | Directed by Anne Fletcher

Willowdean (‘Dumplin’), the plus-size teenage daughter of a former beauty queen, signs up for her mom’s Miss Teen Bluebonnet pageant as a protest that escalates when other contestants follow her footsteps, revolutionizing the pageant and their small Texas town.

Netflix’s recent original effort Dumplin’ is a truly beautiful feel-good film with a delightfully poignant story and energetic cast, that may just hinder on an overdose of sickly intent but succeeds in the conviction of the message it wants to bring forth.

Danielle Macdonald and Jennifer Aniston as Willowdean Dickson and Rosie Dickson respectively, are terrific as the inconspicuous and often loose relationship of daughter and mother. Relatively fresh newcomer Macdonald, recently starring in the likes of Patti Cakes and Lady Bird, puts forth an energetic...

Explorers Reboot TV Series from Cary Fukunaga and David Lowery Set for Paramount
Joseph Baxter Nov 6, 2018

Explorers, the 1985 sci-fi film, is getting adapted as a TV series for Paramount by the impressive duo of Cary Fukunaga and David Lowery.

Explorers arrived anemic on the box office scene back in 1985, manifesting as one of several contemporaneous wide-eyed optimistic sci-fi films with prodigious child actors, two of whom were Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix. However, as the 1980s continues to be mined for reboots, it was only a matter of time before the industry revisited Explorers. Indeed, that is now happening in the form of a Paramount TV series. Yet, the names attached to the project might just give knee-jerk skeptics something to ponder.

Cary Fukunaga and David Lowery have been tapped to develop a TV series adaptation of 1985’s Explorers for Paramount Television, reports Deadline. According to the trade, the duo will collaborate on a script and pen the show bible, and it is...

First Look at Hilary Duff in The Haunting of Sharon Tate
Sharon Tate
The 50th anniversary of the Sharon Tate murders happens next year, and there is more interest in the heinous crime than ever before. Most attention has been placed on Quentin Tarantino's upcoming epic Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which will use the Tate murder as a wraparound for its 60s set story. But there is another Sharon Tate movie coming, and today we have a first look at this true crime psychological thriller.

The Haunting of Sharon Tate stars former Disney princess Hilary Duff in the title role. And she has already been lambasted by Sharon Tate's sister over the movie. It's Margot Robbie playing Sharon Tate in Tarantino's film, which has garnered less vitriol from the Tate family. A first look photo shows what Duff has in store while embedding the character.

Ella Smith in Ray & Liz (2018)
Locarno Film Review: ‘Ray & Liz’
Ella Smith in Ray & Liz (2018)
Art imitates life “Ray & Liz,” the autobiographical debut feature by Turner Prize-nominated artist Richard Billingham; that’s nothing new. But it’s the way art imitates, reflects and recomposes other art — specifically, Billingham’s much-discussed photography — that lends complex layers of memoir and mimesis to this singular spin on the British kitchen-sink drama, preserving both the director’s childhood and his creative evolution in gorgeous, grainy amber. Collating multiple visual and thematic preoccupations from the director’s fine-art oeuvre (notably his bleakly intimate portraiture of his working-class parents) and filtering them through the ingenious compositional eye of d.p. Daniel Landin, “Ray & Liz” is formally arresting and rigorous, though not at the expense of its direct emotional force. Commercially, this Locarno competition entry is an uncompromisingly hard sell, though festival bookings will come thick and fast.

Familiarity with Billingham’s photographic output is by no means vital to an appreciation of “Ray & Liz,...

The threshold move by Anne-Katrin Titze
‪Denis Lavant‬ on Hannah Gross (Susan) and Tye Sheridan (Andy) in Rick Alverson's The Mountain: "A great love story." Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze

Denis Lavant, having just come back from Upstate New York where he was working on Rick Alverson's The Mountain, starring Jeff Goldblum with Hannah Gross (Michael Almereyda's Marjorie Prime) playing his daughter and Tye Sheridan (Alexandre Moors's The Yellow Birds) her boyfriend, spoke with me about his first experience in making a Us feature film.

A Leos Carax and Emmanuel Bourdieu favourite, Denis Lavant, plays a "spirit man, a shaman" in Alverson's latest endeavour, co-written with Person to Person director Dustin Guy Defa (Caveh Zahedi's The Show About The Show) and Colm O'Leary (The Comedy).

In the crosshairs by Anne-Katrin Titze
‪The Yellow Birds‬ director ‪Alexandre Moors‬ on Kevin Powers' novel adapted by David Lowery and Ronnie Porto: "The book is beautiful. A beautiful piece of English literature." Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze

The Yellow Birds, shot by Sundance award-winner Daniel Landin (Jonathan Glazer's Under the Skin) and edited by Joe Klotz with a a terrific score by Adam Wiltzie, Adam Peters and Marc Ribot, stars Alden Ehrenreich and Tye Sheridan with Jack Huston, Jennifer Aniston (also an executive producer), Toni Collette, Jason Patric, Lee Tergesen, and Olivia Crocicchia.

Alexandre Moors joined me for a conversation on his second feature (after Blue Caprice with Isaiah Washington and Tequan Richmond). The first time I heard about Kevin Powers' novel The Yellow Birds was from the director of Augustine, Alice Winocour when she was in New York for her film Disorder (Maryland) during Rendez-Vous with French Cinema in 2016. Matthias Schoenaerts played Vincent, a soldier returning from.

Intense Trailer For The War Thriller The Yellow Birds with Alden Ehrenreich and Tye Sheridan
The first trailer has been released for the upcoming Iraq war thriller The Yellow Birds. The film has a talented cast of actors that includes Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story), Tye Sheridan (Ready Player One), Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), Jason Patric, Toni Collette, and Jennifer Aniston.

I didn't get a chance to see this film at Sundance this year, but I heard good things about it. I like what I'm seeing in this trailer and it looks like a great film worth watching for those of you who are into war dramas.

Twenty-one-year-old Bartle (Ehrenreich) and 18-year-old Murph (Sheridan) become fast friends in army training before shipping off to fight insurgents in Iraq. Taken under the wing of a hot-headed sergeant (Huston), they wander into the fog of war, but Murph never comes back. Bartle returns home with the secrets of Murph’s disappearance held close to his aching chest,...

Alden Ehrenreich Endures the Aftermath of War in First Trailer for ‘The Yellow Birds’
Alexandre Moors’ Blue Caprice was a harrowing, stunningly-shot depiction of the D.C. sniper attacks. The director made his return at last year’s Sundance with the war/Ptsd drama The Yellow Birds, co-written by David Lowery, and now it’s finally getting a release some 17 months later. The delay seems to be two-fold as we imagine the distributors were waiting for its star, Alden Ehrenreich, to have his Solo break-out, and also, the drama comes up short.

Dan Mecca said in his review, “Moors is a filmmaker with immense talent, as demonstrated in his Sundance film Blue Caprice from a few years back, but the beats don’t quite align this time around. This kind of film is important and should be made and made often. Perhaps the problem is that this kind of film has been made, and made often, and made a bit better.”

Also starring Jennifer Aniston,...

Trailer for Iraq War Film 'The Yellow Birds' with Ehrenreich & Sheridan
"Promise me you'll take care of him over there." Saban Films has unveiled an official Us trailer for an indie war drama titled The Yellow Birds, which first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last year (not this year). This is the second film from director Alexandre Moors, who last made the acclaimed Blue Caprice. The film follows Brandon Bartle, played by Alden Ehrenreich, and the difficulties he faces in keeping his humanity, his urge to survive and his friend Murph, played by Tye Sheridan, alive during the war in Iraq, as well as his life and struggles with his memories of the war after he comes back to Virginia. The cast includes Jennifer Aniston, Toni Collette, Jason Patric, Jack Huston, Lee Tergesen, and Robert Pralgo. Yet another one of these Iraq war films about how bad it is. This looks intense and very emotional. Here's the first official trailer...

Jennifer Aniston
Jennifer Aniston, Alden Ehrenreich, Tye Sheridan and Toni Collette cope with the intensity of the Iraq War in the first official trailer for The Yellow Birds.

Based on Kevin Powers' 2012 novel that draws from the author's real-life experience serving in the Army as a machine gunner in Iraq from 2004 to 2005, the film follows Ehrenreich's Brandon Bartle and his relationship with fellow soldier Daniel Murphy (Sheridan) as they serve in the Iraq War.

Struggling with a promise that he made to Murphy's mother (Aniston), the trailer features harrowing battle sequences intercut with Bartle's time back home, struggling to cope with what happened overseas...

‘The Yellow Birds’ Trailer: Jennifer Aniston & Alden Ehrenreich Lead Big-Name Cast In Iraq War Drama
Jennifer Aniston and Alden Ehrenreich in Il destino di un soldato (2017)
Two young U.S. soldiers are heading for a deployment in Iraq. “Promise you’ll look out for him over there,” the mother of one tells her son’s buddy. “Yeah, of course,” he replies.

But war is hell — in many ways — as laid out in the first trailer for The Yellow Birds, which mixes intense battle action with intense post-battle emotion.

The logline: Brandon Bartle (Alden Ehrenreich) and Daniel Murphy (Tye Sheridan) forge a deep bond of friendship during boot camp. When tragedy strikes their platoon in Iraq, one of them must return home to face the hard truth behind the incident and help a grieving mother (Jennifer Aniston) find peace. Toni Collette, Jason Patric and Jack Huston also star.

Alexandre Moors directs from a script by David Lowery and R.F.I. Porto based on Kevin Powers’ bestselling novel. Jeffrey Sharpe, Mark Canton and Courtney Solomon are the producers, with...

‘The Yellow Birds’ Trailer: Alden Ehrenreich And Jennifer Aniston Headline This Iraq War Drama
The modern war movie doesn’t just showcase the epic and incredibly tense battle scenes that are a trademark of the genre. No, they also include the effect of the civilian war on these soldiers, long after they come back from war. That’s what “The Hurt Locker” did so well in 2009, and that’s what the new film “The Yellow Birds” is attempting to do now.

In the first trailer for the Sundance hit, we meet a couple of soldiers who formed a tight bond while fighting together in Iraq.

‘The Yellow Birds’ Trailer: Alden Ehrenreich Goes Indie Before ‘Solo’ in Iraq War Drama
Alden Ehrenreich
Everyone is going to know Alden Ehrenreich’s name later this month when Disney releases “Solo: A Star Wars Solo” around the world, which should only get more eyeballs on the indie war drama “The Yellow Birds.” The film is the latest from “Blue Caprice” director Alexandre Moors and debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

“The Yellow Birds” stars Ehrenreich and “Ready Player One” star Tye Sheridan as soldiers who become friends during a tour in Iraq. After a tragedy strikes their platoon, Ehrenreich’s solider must return home and pick up the pieces of his life, which includes helping a grieving mother find peace. Toni Collette and Jennifer Aniston co-star.

With its mix of psychological drama and intense war scenes, “The Yellow Birds” looks like a compelling mix of “The Hurt Locker” and Moors’ own “Blue Caprice.” Moors is known for shooting in close-up to create...

‘The Yellow Birds’ Trailer Sends Alden Ehrenreich and Tye Sheridan to the Iraq War
Saban Films has released The Yellow Birds trailer. Directed by Alexandre Moors, the film follows young soldier Brandon Bartle (Alden Ehrenreich) who must wrestle with a coverup involving the death of his friend and fellow soldier Daniel Murphy (Tye Sheridan) when they were fighting over in Iraq. I caught the film at Sundance back in 2017, and thought it was okay, but didn’t really build upon its premise despite the strong performances. Here’s an excerpt from Adam Chitwood’s review: Visually, Moors crafts some really stunning shots with the film, and hits upon a dour, immersive aesthetic that …...
