Reba McEntire's New 2024 Sitcom Got The Best News With A Full Season Order
Image
The new Reba McEntire sitcom has gotten a full-season order. The well-rounded performer began her career as a country music artist in the mid-1970s, earning 25 No. 1 singles over the course of her career, including "Can't Even Get the Blues," "How Blue," "Little Rock," and "The Last One to Know." In addition to her music career, which led her to become a host on The Voice, she has also had a robust career as an actress in projects including Tremors, Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, and her long-running sitcom Reba.

In the classic sitcom, McEntire played a single mother whose life was in disarray after her husband had a child with his mistress and her pregnant teen daughter got married. It ran for six seasons, with the first five airing on The WB and the final season airing on the newly rebranded The CW. The Reba cast also included Christopher Rich,...

Reba McEntire Comedy ‘Happy’s Place’ Ordered to Series at NBC
Image
NBC has given a series order to “Happy’s Place,” the Reba McEntire-led pilot the network ordered in January, and greenlit “Lopez vs. Lopez” for Season 3. The multi-cam comedy will debut during the 2024-2024 broadcast season.

“Happy’s Place” follows Bobbie (Reba McEntire), who inherits her father’s restaurant and is less than thrilled to discover that she has a new business partner in the half-sister (Belissa Escobedo) she never knew she had. The cast also includes Melissa Peterman, Pablo Castelblanco, Tokala Black Elk and Rex Linn. Universal Television is the studio.

With Kevin Abbott writing the series and executive producing alongside Michael Hanel, Mindy Schultheis, Julie Abbott and McEntire, “Happy’s Place” reunites the team who produced “Reba” for six seasons from 2001 to 2007. That comedy, which ran on the WB and later the CW, was executive produced by Hanel and Schultheis for its entire run, while Kevin Abbott joined after Season...

Reba McEntire’s Latest Multi-Camera Sitcom Lands Pilot Order at NBC
Image
Reba McEntire is returning to the sitcom world — and reuniting with the team behind her last two comedies as well. NBC has given a pilot order to an untitled multi-camera comedy starring McEntire, who will also executive produce.

The show, from Universal Studio Group’s Universal TV division, stars McEntire as a woman who “inherits her father’s restaurant and is less than thrilled to discover that she has a new business partner in the half-sister she never knew she had.” Kevin Abbott is the writer and exec producer, while Michael Hanel, Mindy Schultheis and Julie Abbott are non-writing exec producers.

It’s a reunion for most of the group, who previously worked together on McEntire’s signature series for The WB, “Reba,” as well as her follow-up sitcom for ABC, “Malibu Country.” Hanel and Schultheis were exec producers for the entire run of “Reba,” while Abbott joined after the...

Culture y Recuerdos: Cristela Alonzo Teaches Us How to Use Laughter as a Coping Skill
Image

Cristela Alonzo knows how to celebrate her wins. That may seem counterintuitive if you know her primarily from her 2014 sitcom, "Cristela," which ABC ran for one network season (22 episodes total). It wasn't the first (or last) Latinx show to be canceled too soon, but it did mark the first time a Latina created, wrote, starred on, and produced a primetime comedy on network television. "Look, we need more representation, but we also have to celebrate what we get," Alonzo tells Popsugar. "I never thought I would ever get a show. I never tried to get a TV show." But she did - and a barrier-breaking one at that. "People weren't ready to trust me with my truth and my story because I was the first one," she recalls. "This show allowed other shows to get a chance to be made that have Latina leads."

"Look, we need more representation,...

Cristela Alonzo on Netflix Special ‘Middle Classy’ and Comedians Punching Down: ‘Why Do You Have to Win?’
Image
Roe v. Wade has been overturned, children and teachers are dying in classrooms and healthcare is not yet a fundamental right for every citizen in the United States. But Cristela Alonzo is still smiling like she does during all of her stand-up specials, including her newest Netflix venture, “Middle Classy.”

“I have always smiled in my stand-up because I’m so excited to be there,” Alonzo tells Variety. “I always tell people that the audience wants to be on your team in stand-up. You got to show them that you’re there for them, and you’re happy. So why do we not have those moments of joy more often?”

Even through a Zoom video interview, Alonzo radiates positivity and delight in a time when it’s easy to give in to despair and anger. In 2014, Alonzo made history as the first Latina woman to create, produce, write and star in her own U.

Writer, producer, actor and comedian Cristela Alonzo has been tapped to host The CW’s “Legends of the Hidden Temple,” a reboot of the hit ’90s game show.

The “Cristela” and “Cars 3” star will assume her role as a “host with stature who also has the humor of a stand-up and the energy of a camp counselor,” according to Scott A. Stone, creator and executive producer of the show.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Inclusion Doesn’t Just Mean More of The Rock
Image
Let me start this column off by saying, I love Dwayne Johnson. I mean, who doesn’t love The Rock? We’ve been smelling what he’s been cooking for nearly 25 years.

And yet, it was quite deflating to see the recent report “The Prevalence and Portrayal of Asian and Pacific Islanders Across 1,300 Films,” which found that just 44 of those films featured an Api lead or co-star. And in particular, that one-third of those 44 was just one person: You guessed it, The Rock.

I think Johnson would be the first to tell you that he’s just one person with one perspective, and that when it comes to on-screen portrayals, he can’t begin to represent the mixed plate that is the Asian American and Pacific Islander population in the United States.

“I can’t stress enough that Asian American Pacific Islander culture is not one size fits all; it’s not a monolith,...

John Leguizamo, Stephanie Beatriz, Benjamin Bratt and More on Fighting for Parity Beyond Representation
Image
Even for celebrated Latinx performers like John Leguizamo, finding success in the entertainment industry is a hard-fought and seemingly never-ending battle. But as a newcomer to the business, Leguizamo recalls being galvanized by the struggle into telling his own stories.

“I just kept getting put into these really negative roles that I felt I was contributing to the downgrade of the Latinx image in the media,” he tells Variety. “I wanted to write my own stuff, so I could portray my people the way I saw them and felt them.” And that’s exactly what the Leguizamo did. His 1991 off-Broadway production of “Mambo Mouth” was a hit. Despite being forced to perform in the hallway of the theater, the show brought in big names including Arthur Miller, Al Pacino and John F. Kennedy Jr.

“All of a sudden I felt like I have something to offer,” Leguizamo says. “I have something that white America,...

Sony Buys Two Scripts From Rising Latina Writer Emilia Serrano (Exclusive)
Sony has bought two scripts from Emilia Serrano, a rising Latina TV writer, for two feature comedies being developed by Sony’s Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, Variety has learned.

Emilia Serrano has been a writer on shows like “My Generation,” “The Finder,” and “Cristela.” Serrano, a daughter of Mexican immigrants, often writes about her upbringing in the Bay Area where she was raised by a mariachi-singing mother and mechanic father.

The scripts sold would be her first work in feature films.

The first is an untitled Columbia Pictures project produced by Noah Hawley’s 26 Keys and Pascal Pictures, a cultural coming-of-age story about a career-driven Latina American during her “double quinceañera” — celebrated at age 30 because she missed having her first quinceñera at 15. She invites her parents, best friends, and brazen married cousin to a work trip disguised as a double quince, inviting trouble that could jeopardize her job and her relationships.

Mishel Prada and Melissa Barrera in Vida (2018)
TV Review: ‘Vida’
Mishel Prada and Melissa Barrera in Vida (2018)
The rare drama series to focus on Latino characters — who are female and/or queer, no less — “Vida” only somewhat lives up to the color, richness and excitement maybe promised by its title (the Spanish feminine noun for “life”). Starz certainly deserves a big gracias for disrupting Hollywood’s #SoWhiteMale status with this scrappy half-hour, which showrunner Tanya Saracho has said reflects her mission to introduce “the brown queer perspective” to TV. Sporting vibrant East La La Land locations and piquant touches of magical realism, the first six episodes ultimately unfold like an arthouse-y pastiche of Showtime hits “The L Word” and “Shameless” and Netflix’s Cuban-spiced reboot of “One Day at a Time.” Meaning it’s got to find its own way if it’s going to stick around.

Newcomer (and last-minute cast-member replacement) Mishel Prada hits the ground running as TV’s latest prodigal daughter: Emma Hernandez, a...

Tony Shalhoub, Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy, Cai Puri-Evans, Heledd Jarman, Cristela Alonzo, and Siân Eirian in Cars 3 (2017)
Pixar’s ‘Cars 3’ Is the Female-Driven Animated Movie We’ve Been Waiting For
Tony Shalhoub, Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy, Cai Puri-Evans, Heledd Jarman, Cristela Alonzo, and Siân Eirian in Cars 3 (2017)
With “Cars 3,” Pixar leans into female empowerment. First, high-tech trainer and wannabe racer Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonzo) helps Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) mount a comeback after a near-fatal crash. Their cross-generational relationship deepens when McQueen teaches Ramirez about real racing, as Paul Newman’s late, great Doc Hudson taught him.

At the same time, Pixar promoted animator Jude Brownbill to directing animator on “Cars 3.” She fine-tuned Ramirez and also oversaw major sequences. Brownbill previously worked on “The Good Dinosaur,” “Inside Out,” “Monsters University,” “Brave,” and “Cars 2,” and joined Louise Smythe (a lead story artist) and Ana Lacaze (shading technical director) in the latest display of female empowerment at the studio.

Crashing a Male-Dominated Profession

Just as Ramirez fights to assert herself in a male-dominated profession, so does the soft-spoken, British-born Brownbill. “It does sometimes feel like the female voices aren’t as loud as the men’s...

Coming Distractions: The latest Cars 3 teaser plays like an actual car commercial
Okay, so you weren’t such a huge fan of Cars or Cars 2. Well, how do you feel about actual cars? That seems to be the central thesis of the newest teaser for Cars 3. Seeing as how this franchise one of the rare misfires for Pixar, it’s maybe not a terrible bit of marketing slight of hand. It seems to be sort of a continuation of the strategy they employed in the gritty initial teaser, which seemed to be selling to the prospect of mutilation and death and featured the tagline: “From This Moment, Everything Will Change.”

To be precise, not everything will change. Owen Wilson is still onboard as the (possibly doomed) anthropomorphic stock car Lightning McQueen. But as you’ll see here, there are some new featured characters, including Jackson Storm and Cruz Ramirez, voiced by Armie Hammer (The Social Network) and Cristela Alonzo (Cristela...

Story Details For Pixar’s Car 3 Screech Online; Armie Hammer And Cristela Alonzo Among Voice Cast
Nipping at the heels of this morning’s teaser reveal, one designed to place fans on red alert ahead of this weekend’s full-length trailer, Entertainment Weekly has peeled back the curtain on Cars 3, Brian Fee’s animated sequel out to recapture the rip-roaring spirit of John Lasseter’s 2006 original.

That’s not to say Cars 2 was a total write-off – a $560 million worldwide cume is not to be balked at – but six months out from the release of Cars 3, there’s a general feeling online that Fee’s threequel has the potential to steer Pixar’s popular racing series back on course. It’ll once again involved franchise star Lightning McQueen, and we now have confirmation of two actors who will be joining Owen Wilson in the voice booth: Armie Hammer of Nocturnal Animals fame and Cristela Alonzo, creator of hit TV series Cristela.

The former will...

Carlos Ponce Goes Into #Tbt Overdrive With Sofía Vergara, Shakira and Ricky Martin Pics
Carlos Ponce
We love #TBTs, especially when they're 18 years old! Actor Carlos Ponce rolled out some epic throwbacks. Seriously, epic!  The Cristela star went way back with this pic of himself and Sofía Vergara from Fuera de Serie,  a show that the Colombian actress hosted from 1995 to 1998. The 43-year-old actor must have been digging through old photo albums for hours, because he was also able to find this photo with a very young Ricky Martin. We had forgotten that these two sported longer 'dos back in the day. Here is Ponce with Shakira. Remember when she had long black hair? We did a double take! The newly single Latino ended...

Kay Cannon To Make Directorial Debut With The Pact
In what can only be described as great news, multiple award-winning writer and producer Kay Cannon is finally set to make her feature film directorial debut, with the upcoming comedy movie, The Pact. The producers of the film – including Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg – will almost certainly be hoping to cash in on Cannon’s impressive comedic skill-set, which helped the TV series 30 Rock achieve dizzying heights of success, and the Pitch Perfect film franchise earn more than $400 million in box office so far.

The Pact is written by Brian Kehoe and Jim Kehoe (Overachievers), with Deadline reporting that Eben Russell, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg also worked on the script. It is, unsurprisingly, a male-dominated story, focusing on three highly protective fathers, and their efforts to derail a pact made by their respective daughters, that would see them each lose their virginity on Prom night. While the plot sounds...

Last Man Standing: Season Five Ratings
Over the past few years, lots of Friday night sitcoms have been cancelled by ABC -- shows like Cristela, The Neighbors, and Malibu Country -- but Last Man Standing has survived. Will this Tim Allen sitcom hold up in the ratings and survive to see a sixth season? Stay tuned.

On Last Man Standing, Mike Baxter (Allen), marketing director of the Outdoor Man sporting goods stores, continues to stand his ground in a household of women. The rest of the cast includes Amanda Fuller, Christoph Sanders, Flynn Morrison, Hector Elizondo, Kaitlyn Dever, Molly Ephraim, and Nancy Travis.

The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available -- usually the next day, around 11:30am...

The post mainly revolves around Alonzo's ABC show Cristela, which was canceled last Thursday, but it also delves into some of her career's hardships.
