NBC has given a series order to “Happy’s Place,” the Reba McEntire-led pilot the network ordered in January, and greenlit “Lopez vs. Lopez” for Season 3. The multi-cam comedy will debut during the 2024-2024 broadcast season.

Cristela Alonzo knows how to celebrate her wins. That may seem counterintuitive if you know her primarily from her 2014 sitcom, "Cristela," which ABC ran for one network season (22 episodes total). It wasn't the first (or last) Latinx show to be canceled too soon, but it did mark the first time a Latina created, wrote, starred on, and produced a primetime comedy on network television. "Look, we need more representation, but we also have to celebrate what we get," Alonzo tells Popsugar. "I never thought I would ever get a show. I never tried to get a TV show." But she did - and a barrier-breaking one at that. "People weren't ready to trust me with my truth and my story because I was the first one," she recalls. "This show allowed other shows to get a chance to be made that have Latina leads."

Peacock has given a straight-to-series order to the coming-of-age thriller “Hysteria!”

The series hails from writer and executive producer Matthew Kane. Chris Bender and Jake Weiner of Good Fear will also executive produce. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the writers and directors of the upcoming film “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” will direct and executive produce. Let me start this column off by saying, I love Dwayne Johnson. I mean, who doesn’t love The Rock? We’ve been smelling what he’s been cooking for nearly 25 years.

And yet, it was quite deflating to see the recent report “The Prevalence and Portrayal of Asian and Pacific Islanders Across 1,300 Films,” which found that just 44 of those films featured an Api lead or co-star. And in particular, that one-third of those 44 was just one person: You guessed it, The Rock.

Exclusive: Cristela alum Andrew Leeds is set for a recurring role opposite Jane Levy in NBC’s musical light drama series Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, from Jake in Progress creator Austin Winsberg, Lionsgate, The Tannenbaum Co., Paul Feig’s FeigCo Entertainment and Universal Music Group.

Written by Winsberg and directed by Richard Shepard, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist centers on Zoey Clarke (Levy), a whip-smart computer coder forging her way in San Francisco. After an unusual event she starts to hear the innermost wants and desires of the people around her through songs. At first, she questions her own sanity but soon realizes this unwanted curse may just be an incredibly wonderful gift.

Leeds will play David, a lawyer and Zoey’s older, more self-assured and “normal” brother.

Comedian Anjelah Johnson is set to star in a multi-camera comedy in development at NBC which both Kevin Hart and America Ferrera will executive produce, Variety has learned.

The project is titled “All Fancy.” Inspired by Johnson’s life and stand-up, the series is seen through the point of view of Veronica Jimenez (Johnson), a newly successful 30-something Mexican-American woman who often goes against cultural and social expectations, creating chaos and comedy within her marriage, business and extended family.

Emilia Serrano will write and executive produce, with Johnson serving as co-executive producer in addition to starring. ABC has put in development Americanized, a half-hour comedy inspired by Sara Saedi’s memoir Americanized: Rebel Without A Green Card, from Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine and ABC Studios, where Hello Sunshine has a broadcast overall deal.

Written by Saedi (iZombie), Americanized tells the story of a loving and off-beat Iranian family who’s been living with a huge secret: they’re undocumented immigrants. Told through an irreverent, heartfelt and a-political lens, the series will give viewers a window into the life of a Middle-Eastern household while exploring the universal truths that bond every type of “American” family.

In the book, Saedi shares her story of growing up in San Jose, California in a loving Iranian family and her shock when she discovers she and the rest of her family are undocumented.

Saidi executive produces with Hello Sunshine’s Witherspoon and Lauren Levy Neustadter. ABC Studios is the studio.

Sony has bought two scripts from Emilia Serrano, a rising Latina TV writer, for two feature comedies being developed by Sony’s Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, Variety has learned.

Emilia Serrano has been a writer on shows like “My Generation,” “The Finder,” and “Cristela.” Serrano, a daughter of Mexican immigrants, often writes about her upbringing in the Bay Area where she was raised by a mariachi-singing mother and mechanic father.

The scripts sold would be her first work in feature films.

The first is an untitled Columbia Pictures project produced by Noah Hawley’s 26 Keys and Pascal Pictures, a cultural coming-of-age story about a career-driven Latina American during her “double quinceañera” — celebrated at age 30 because she missed having her first quinceñera at 15. She invites her parents, best friends, and brazen married cousin to a work trip disguised as a double quince, inviting trouble that could jeopardize her job and her relationships.

The rare drama series to focus on Latino characters — who are female and/or queer, no less — “Vida” only somewhat lives up to the color, richness and excitement maybe promised by its title (the Spanish feminine noun for “life”). Starz certainly deserves a big gracias for disrupting Hollywood’s #SoWhiteMale status with this scrappy half-hour, which showrunner Tanya Saracho has said reflects her mission to introduce “the brown queer perspective” to TV. Sporting vibrant East La La Land locations and piquant touches of magical realism, the first six episodes ultimately unfold like an arthouse-y pastiche of Showtime hits “The L Word” and “Shameless” and Netflix’s Cuban-spiced reboot of “One Day at a Time.” Meaning it’s got to find its own way if it’s going to stick around.

Okay, so you weren’t such a huge fan of Cars or Cars 2. Well, how do you feel about actual cars? That seems to be the central thesis of the newest teaser for Cars 3. Seeing as how this franchise one of the rare misfires for Pixar, it’s maybe not a terrible bit of marketing slight of hand. It seems to be sort of a continuation of the strategy they employed in the gritty initial teaser, which seemed to be selling to the prospect of mutilation and death and featured the tagline: “From This Moment, Everything Will Change.”

To be precise, not everything will change. Owen Wilson is still onboard as the (possibly doomed) anthropomorphic stock car Lightning McQueen. Nipping at the heels of this morning’s teaser reveal, one designed to place fans on red alert ahead of this weekend’s full-length trailer, Entertainment Weekly has peeled back the curtain on Cars 3, Brian Fee’s animated sequel out to recapture the rip-roaring spirit of John Lasseter’s 2006 original.

That’s not to say Cars 2 was a total write-off – a $560 million worldwide cume is not to be balked at – but six months out from the release of Cars 3, there’s a general feeling online that Fee’s threequel has the potential to steer Pixar’s popular racing series back on course. Carlos Ponce (Cristela) will recur in Maids‘ upcoming fourth season as Ben, a “handsome and slick” manager of a major movie star, TVLine has learned exclusively. He’s also described as “charming” and “mysterious,” but hey, who isn’t on this show?

In addition to Cristela, Ponce’s small-screen credits include roles on Hollywood Heights, Lipstick Jungle and 7th Heaven.

In what can only be described as great news, multiple award-winning writer and producer Kay Cannon is finally set to make her feature film directorial debut, with the upcoming comedy movie, The Pact. The producers of the film – including Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg – will almost certainly be hoping to cash in on Cannon’s impressive comedic skill-set, which helped the TV series 30 Rock achieve dizzying heights of success, and the Pitch Perfect film franchise earn more than $400 million in box office so far.
