Rubbish

This was so bad, I honestly thought it was done by either TV Ontario (public access) or some awful CBC government funded pile surrounding LGBT programming. Never in a million years would I expect this to be British TV or even British student TV.... it is just insanely bad.

Right from the terrible acting, the whiny, discordant soundtrack where the sound levels go from whispering in a shoebox to blasting your ears off all the way to the dragged out unnecessary scenes of people taking three minutes to answer their phone or showing tidbits with no discernible function toward forwarding the story.... this 'production' is so beyond amateurish, dull and irritating as to be almost unwatchable.

Avoid at all costs unless you can somehow make a drinking game of it like whenever the show decides to blast your eardrums with melancholy, weepy music after you had to notch up the volume to make out the whispering of the poor, sad main character.

Shows promise

It would be easy to dismiss Encryption due to its numerous weak points, but I find that I don't want to as it would diminish what is a promising start. Very quickly I find myself invested in the lead character and I am interested in how the story will develop around Sam, who is portrayed well by Tara Caple. This is important as some of the other actors are a little wooden, but hopefully they will grow into their roles as the story moves forward. The show reminds me of Blake 7 or the early Doctor Who's from the late 70's or early 80's. Sci-Fi based drama on a budget is always going to struggle to capture an audience, but if you're willing to look past this then you find the Encryption actually has a decent minimalist script that avoids exposition, the direction is not bad and the editing interesting, although the sound volumes from scene to scene are all over the place, again you need to look past this. Debut work like this should be supported and allowances made for the lack of budget. This is by no means a polished product, but it is a small gem in the rough. I am looking forward to seeing episode 2.
