Reasonable B Grade Action Flick
s327616914 March 2016
The Midnight Man is a reasonable B-Grade action flick. The background story includes some genuine originality too.

An assassin who cannot feel pain or sensory pleasures, such as touch. Its a rather different premise, that's turned on its head, with interesting results.

The selection of a good cast of seasoned, mostly television based actors really lifts this film. There's a decent amount of moderately funny, mostly gallows humour, on offer from the lead and supporting cast to off set the action scenes.

Perhaps the only downside to this film is it does languish somewhat in the middle. There is a discernible loss of the pace which could have been fixed with a more considered storyline and a little more action and less idle chat.

All in all, I liked The Midnight Man. Its in no way exceptional but it is watchable and for the most part, entertaining. Six out of ten from me.

"The Midnight Man" is better at witty exchange than physical one, it's a sloppy trudge through a peculiar night saved by the good use humor.
quincytheodore7 March 2016
In a world where action movies become more visceral, more demanding in their production and cinematography, "The Midnight Man" employs a sluggishly poor combat. Nevertheless, it also offers a few funny exchanges with solid script and presentable acting performance. The end product is a somewhat enjoyably one night stand with glaring flaws which are forgivable depending on your expectation.

Grady (Will Kemp) is a fixer for a mob boss with unique ability to not feel pain. In one bad night, he must eliminate four targets that may have more connection than he thinks. There's a shade of Ryan Reynolds here, as Will Kemp dons a similar witty agent while running from one bizarre situation to the next. He gets the jester part right, although there's some shoddy moments when trying to emulate a hardened criminal.

Brinna Kelly as Zan, the unlucky paramedic who got caught in the crossfire, is a fairly decent love interest and weird partner. Usually, this kind of Jason Statham's Transporter suave romance doesn't pay off, but the acting and chemistry makes it work more often than not. The supporting cast like Doug Jones and William Forsythe also deliver on the outlandishly named and portrayed characters.

The problem, and it's a rather significant one, comes when it tries to do action sequences. It's utterly horrible, bordering on Bollywood level. This makes the sturdy, flamboyant or charismatic characters into feeble men trying to deliver a punch and fail. At a couple of points it becomes ridiculous, which perhaps might be serendipitous or even intentional, but it betrays the serious thriller tone it just builds for five minutes.

Messy and sketchy, but hilariously entertaining at times. it's a sloppy trudge through a peculiar night elevated by its clever and humorous script.

Entertaining
angusking-3999826 August 2020
I was drawn to this film by the actress Brinna Kelly after watching her in 'The Fare'. I'm not quite sure that she's much of an actress yet I find her intriguing. She has an oriental attractiveness with an alluring presence. Grady, the assassin, seemed quite inept at times. Bungling his hits and getting out of scrapes by the mistakes of his captors. The film was entertaining and fun in a sort of B-movie way.

An enjoyable and convincing adventure
Gordon-1116 August 2016
This film tells the story of a man who cannot feel any pain due to a generic condition. He becomes a successful crime gangster as a result. One day, he is sent to kill four of his own mates, and everything breaks loose.

"The Midnight Man" is an action film with a twist! It is such an obvious choice for an action film in retrospect, and the idea really works. Why I haven't seen films like this, I do not know. The main guy, Grady, is real tough but he is also sensitive. His relationship with Zan is convincing too. They are both very good, and make the film more enjoyable and convincing. It has a lot of fights and action, but it doesn't appear senselessly violent. I enjoyed watching it.

my notes

I watched this movie on accident rofl. i meant to watch the horror movie that came out in the same year with the same name. i was surprised when it turned out to be a fun action movie instead of a horror, i figured i made a wrong assumption based on the name. the movie wasn't horrible, it had some enjoyment, but was pretty sucky overall (1 viewing)

Original, humorous, a bit of action, a bit gory, refreshing performances and a unique script.
peterp-450-29871619 April 2016
"Do you know , Ezekiel always says that there's bad and then there's me. You see, your boss Pearl over there. He was very, very bad. I'm worse."

You think Grady (Will Kemp) is the new Batman? Or the successor of Spiderman? Maybe a reborn Superman or Ant-Man? So could he be a new super hero? No, not at all. Not in the strict sense of what we mean by a superhero. The only thing that makes him unique is a genetic disorder, which makes him totally numb. He feels absolutely no pain. Or the pleasure of a hot shower. Or even the blissful feeling of soft velvet sheets. Well, so erotic feelings won't please him either. You can say, he's the ideal assassin. Someone who laughs away the toughest tortures used by opponents who captured him. And that's how this highly original film starts. The first thing I thought was: "What the hell is this?".

Let me get straight to the point. This was a unique film that scores highly in terms of humor. The creativity meter is set to maximum, if you just look at the main topic. This is a typical example of an "under the radar" movie you eventually watch in a dismayed state. It's such a film you'll watch with a "ok-we-will-see" feeling and afterwards you come to the conclusion that you've witnessed something unique. My expectations were very low. If you're assuming this is just another crappy B-movie, you'll surely be pleasantly surprised. First the cast. Will Kemp, Brinna Kelly (besides looking extremely delicious, she's also a talented writer who co-wrote the script) and Doug Jones were totally unknown actors to me. But they played an outstanding role. There are also some well-known actors such as William Forsythe and Vinnie Jones. But lets be honest, the two protagonists are the shining stars in this entertaining film. Will Kemp was sublime. Grady is a cold-blooded hit-man with some fighting experience and skills. He surely could be accepted as a member of "The expendables". But above all, his sense of humor and imperturbability appealed to me the most. He has this sort of "Bruce Willis" attitude. The correct dose of dry humor. A feature that the original Willis apparently forgot about.

But Brinna Kelly was also perfect for the role as Zan. A nurse at the wrong place and time who gradually helps Grady with the task he must accomplish for Ezekiel (Brent Spiner). The funny thing is that Grady got some kind of medication which resulted in him having his sense of feeling back again. Not exactly an advantage if you're in the middle of a job with a deadline and you are aware there might be some painful confrontations. A nice twist in the story. And trust me, it's not the only one. The moment you think you know how the story is put together, a new and surprising twist shows up and turns the whole story upside down. I don't mention this often, but this time I can only admire the work the scriptwriters did here. Rarely I've seen such an original, creative and entertaining film. And this because of the unique script and the excellent performances.

I surely recommend "The midnight man". It's an entertaining mix of action, gory bits (no imagination needed to figure out what you'll see when they use nails during a torture session) and meticulously used humor. Once again a proof that among those films that aren't placed in the spotlights and countless movie lovers are awaiting for, you can discover a pleasant surprise. So go watch this movie and enjoy!

Painless
kirbylee70-599-52617929 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I was truly surprised by this one, something that doesn't happen very often. While definitely a movie not made on an extreme budget it does offer plenty of action, entertainment, witty dialogue and some decent performances. That's always nice to see.

Will Kemp stars as Grady, a hit-man with a twist. As we learn in the first segment of the movie he has a rare condition that results in his having no sensation of pain. While this could be dangerous for most people he uses it to his advantage taking beatings and torture from his foes without consequence. While it confounds them it allows him the time to break free and complete any and all killings he was set out to do.

Grady's main employer is Ezekiel (Brent Spiner) who sets him on the trail of several men, all of whom have joined together to take him down and possibly Grady as well. He gives him a cell phone, sends him off to the first target and tells him he'll give him the next name as he completes each task.

Grady is drugged after taking out his first target by someone who snuck into the apartment before he could leave. That person not only left him unconscious but injected him with a serum that takes away his advantage leaving him able to feel things for the first time, including but not limited to pain. When he wakes he kidnaps an ambulance driver named Zan (Brinna Kelly) to help him deal with some wounds and assist him as the night moves forward. Of course the whole Stockholm syndrome comes into play here as Zan eventually begins to have feelings for Grady.

With each target Grady and Zan not only have to worry about completing his mission but in finding out who was there to target him as well at the first hit. In the end just who is doing what and why makes for a satisfying and completely off guard solution to the mystery.

What makes the movie work is the well scripted writing, giving Grady a wise cracking disposition that has him delivering quips while working at the job of killing people. Kemp does a wonderful job of pulling these off with ease. Not only that the end of the film also results in something so unexpected that it catches you by surprise, something that doesn't happen that often these days. Throw in some short near cameo sequences by action vets like William Forsythe and Vinnie Jones as well as one of the few non-makeup related roles by Doug Jones (who does a fantastic job here) and you have a movie that is a fun surprise to watch.

After first watching I wasn't sure if this was one I'd add keep for my collection or not. But the more I thought about it the more I kept holding on to it. In the end I think it is one I may go back to from time to time, I had enough fun for that to happen. If nothing else this is one worth watching. Let's hope all involved move forward in the direction this film is pointing.

One of the best movies you've never heard of...
djmrmusic6 May 2016
I sit through an awful lot of terrible movies looking for the unknown gems such as this movie.

this movie was original, it was funny, it was clever and just an enjoyable watch.

I don't want to go into detail about the movie and spoil it for you, but I highly recommend you give it a chance.

I have no affiliation with this movie other than watching it, so I'm not a shill for the movie, I just really enjoyed it! This is a movie I will definitely watch again, just a good old fun assassin movie!

This 10 line limit thing is silly, sometimes you just don't have anything more to say...

Excellent crime thriller
patrick-41317 October 2021
I can't see any reason why DC Hamilton and Brinna Kelly aren't household names yet. Both of the films I've seen that they've worked on together - this and "The Fare" - are outstanding in both writing and low-budget directing. I'm sold; they are both the real deal. This is an excellent little crime drama with a cool, unusual hook to it.

Hamilton knows how to get good performances out of actors, which is not as easy as it seems. And the art of making a tiny budget look great on screen is pretty rare too. This film definitely pulls that off.

Finally, let's especially hope that Brinna Kelly gets a lot more writing work before she's pulled in to full-time acting. She's obviously good at that, with a glamorous look and compelling personality, but she's an even better writer. Original story ideas combined with compelling characters - that's a rare thing to come by these days. This is highly recommended.

Scores for originality. Really enjoyed this movie.
a_imdb-194-7787343 April 2016
This is a bit of a strange movie. A few minutes in and we were undecided as it was a little offbeat! At first I was thinking, hmmm, what's the caliber of the acting here, but it doesn't take long to realise that it's actually great given it's intentions. This is a great mix of humour and action and really really original. I found it refreshing to see something that made me think "hey, there are still people out there making movies that involve a bit of thought!".

The 2 lead actors are both excellent in their roles and play well together. But it's also some of the minor parts that really made me grin. And a good ending. So rare. So pleasing when you feel that the end warrants the (easy) investment. I would say that anyone that thinks this is mediocre doesn't get the point of this movie. For us, it was a movie that made us feel like we were part of the fun. Not many movies make me chuckle a lot, this did. Suspend your belief and just enjoy it!

THERE'S BAD. AND THEN THERE'S ME
nogodnomasters2 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Grady (Will Kemp) is a hit man, one with a genetic condition where he doesn't feel pain. I watched the film cold so my initial discovery of this was very entertaining. Unfortunately the manufacturer has made it part of its standard description/spoiler. This would have made a great hit-man film in itself, except they opted to semi-cure him while on assignment. He is attempting to kill people while he is struggling with being able to feel pain and pleasure for the first time in his life.

Brinna Kelly plays the required "hot Asian chick" in modern films. She is an EMT.

The plot has some continuity issues that most of us will ignore. I would mention them but it would include end point spoilers. There is a cameo by Vinnie Jones which I wish would have lasted longer. Grady has a great sense of humor and his condition is shown as being and asset, which is not really the case, but just go with it, Unfortunately once Grady is "cured" the film's mood and comedy falls off a cliff in spite of the meager attempts at EMT humor with correctly placing a drunk passed out woman in the "recovery position."

Worth a rental

Guide: F-word. Hot Asian sex. No nudity.

An enjoyable movie with fun chemistry
philoj2 March 2016
I was expecting a weak thriller also-ran, but instead I got a very entertaining, unusual drama. A lot of movies are challenged by how to inform the viewer about what's going on, but the addition of a hostage is well engineered and gives us our everyman for exposition. She also provides a fantastic foil for a somewhat complex idea and has great chemistry with the protagonist.

A very unusual concept sets the movie apart but doesn't mire us down in overlong explanations or monologues. In fact many ideas that might have been over-dramatic in other movies are efficiently dispatched with a few lines. For example, establishing that our hostage has a young daughter (and thus a vulnerability) is handled in about three lines of dialog. I say this as a compliment, as the screenwriter has expertly relied on the audience to pick up on things instead of spelling out every single detail. This gives the dialog (and the movie) a very comfortable, natural feel.

The biggest twist of all was learning who wrote and produced the movie - a fantastic first outing for a pretty talented actress. I hope we see a lot more from her in the future.

Refreshingly Smart Little Crime Thriller!!!
zardoz-1323 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Good movies keep you wondering what will happen next in them. First-time, feature-length director D.C. Hamilton's tongue-in-cheek thriller "The Midnight Man" does an exceptional job of not only mystifying you but also defying your expectations. The Brinna Kelly & D.C. Hamilton screenplay concerns a singular sort of mob enforcer named Grady who feels no pain whether he is being struck or tortured by his adversaries. As the eponymous hero, Will Kemp is witty, debonair, and loquacious, without being mealy-mouthed. Kemp has appeared in a few big studio theatrical releases, including "Step Up 2 The Streets," "Van Helsing," and "Mindhunters." More recently, he had a part in "The Scorpion King 4: Quest for Power." The dialogue that he spouts isn't the typical tough guy stuff. Indeed, he resembles a cross-between of Roger Moore and Roger Davis. This exciting 103-minute movie borrows elements from "The World Is Not Enough" as well as "The Usual Suspects." Like the James Bond villain in 007 escapade "The World Is Not Enough," Kemp's character Grady suffers from a real-life disability known as Congenital Insensitivity to Pain Anhidrosis (CIPA) so doesn't feel a thing. He handles firearms well and radiates a charisma that makes him both amusing as well as dangerous. Hamilton and Kelly pit him against a dastardly villain as deceptive and duplicitous as murderous Keyser Söze in "The Usual Suspects." Remember, Keyser Söze succeeded in pulled the wool over everybody eyes when it came to shielding his identity. "Midnight Man" enemy Hamilton and leading lady Brinna Kelly have cooked up a slick little yarn on a low budget with nearly unknowns, and "The Midnight Man" qualifies as above-average crime melodrama from its awesome opening scene right up to its surprising ending. British hardcase actor Vinnie Jones and veteran character actor William Forsythe emerge as the most prominent thespians in the cast. Co-writer Brinna Kelly plays a paramedic who is on her first street assignment when she encounters our hero at a dead man's house. Just when you think that you have the plot figured out, Kelly and Hamilton pull a fast one on you. I thoroughly enjoyed this literate, nimbly-paced crime thriller with a sense of humor. Doug Jones is memorable as a Hannibal Lector type killer who loves to torture his victims, and "Star Trek: The Next Generation" actor Brent Spiner is almost unrecognizable as Grady's crime boss named Ezekiel.

The Midnight Man: an excellent movie that deserves wide exposure
drtariqshadid22 March 2016
The Midnight Man is a movie that I accidentally stumbled upon, without any previous reference and without ever having heard about it before. I watched it with barely any expectations of what it would be about, but it certainly took me by surprise when it forcefully grabbed me and dragged me into its imaginative storyline, right from the beginning.

From the very start, this adorable and humorous crime movie picks up a steady pace that it maintains until its very last scene, and that has you constantly wondering what will come next. When I was done watching, I had enjoyed it so much that I just had to go and find out more about it, and that's when I was in for a few more surprises.

I had not expected this to be the work of independent movie makers with a limited budget. I watch movies frequently, and I am able to appreciate the art of independent movie producers just as readily as that of high-end blockbusters.

I think that what we are dealing with here, first and foremost, is a combination of excellent writing, directing, and acting. The unique amalgam of these talents that is presented in this movie manages to keep the focus of the viewer on the storyline, in a way that cleverly distracts your attention from any setbacks that might be caused by budget limitations or lack of resources. It is pure talent and brilliance, in my opinion, to be able to make a film that way, and to do it so successfully.

I discovered that much of what we are seeing and experiencing is depending on the talents of Brinna Kelly, who plays the secondary lead role in the movie, or the 'co-lead', if you like. As it turns out, her contribution to this film goes far beyond that, as she is also the (co-)writer of the story, and the producer. Since, in my opinion, the storyline with its witty (sometimes hilarious) dialogs is such a major factor in the excellence of this flick, I believe that her contribution to its effectiveness must have been of cardinal significance. She skillfully and elegantly plays a surprising, fascinating, and somewhat hard-to-fathom character named 'Zan' in this film, providing an excellent balance against the role of the lead character, Grady, charismatically played by the British actor Will Kemp.

I think that Grady was actually done so well, that another story could be written around his character, as a sequel to this film. I probably feel this way mostly as a result of Kemp's excellent acting, but it must also be a matter of good writing, and good casting. He manages to remain believable throughout the movie, provided that the viewer is tuned in to the subtly sarcastic sense of humor that permeates this movie from beginning to end. The humor has a distinctly British feel to it, while the movie itself has more of an American air and style. It may well be that the 'Britishness' is Kemp's own effect on the script. That said, the tongue-in-cheek dialogs are absolutely delightful, and contribute strongly to the attractiveness of the entire movie. When it comes to the acting in this film, Will Kemp 'makes' it; Brinna Kelly adds the magic.

D.C. Hamilton is the director and co-writer of this movie, and apparently has a background in TV production and editing mostly. His previous work with Brinna Kelly was on a short movie called 'The Midnight Monster', which I have not yet had the pleasure to watch. When I found this title, I was amused by the fact that apparently, an allusion to that movie is being made in 'The Midnight Man'. Given the pivotal importance of the director in making a good script come to life, D.C. Hamilton undoubtedly deserves a huge portion of the credit. It certainly looks like the Hamilton-Kelly combination forms the basis of a powerful team with a promising potential for putting out superb works of art.

Although I believe that all actors were excellently cast, and did a wonderful job, two of them specifically deserve to be highlighted here. Doug Jones plays a bone-chilling role as 'torture-expert' Vick, and William Forsythe impresses as the intimidating villain Fairbanks. Both these talented actors shine brightly, effortlessly immersed in their roles, as true veterans of the film industry.

Last but not least, I think the movie score plays an important role in giving this movie that 'big feel'. It helps set the right mood, is never too prominent or pushy, and is woven seamlessly into the fabric of the storyline, the dialogue, and the action scenes.

I think that The Midnight Man suffers only from one thing, and that's simply: not enough people seeing it. I watched it again, shortly after having seen it for the first time, and this time with the pause button under my finger. Truth be told, I was now able to see how and where a bigger budget would have been able to lift this movie to even higher levels, even though none of this had even come to my mind when I watched it the first time around.

Nevertheless, this doesn't take away anything from the credit that these talented filmmakers deserve for what they proved to be able to create with what was available to them. On the contrary; it underlines even more that we are dealing with people of true artistic talent, who are inevitably going to make a serious impact in the movie world if they keep putting out such wonderful labors of love.

Bottom line: watch The Midnight Man, and invite others to watch it. Take my word for it, you will enjoy it. Then, join me in looking out for this awesome team's next work.

one of the best
tanmayn22 March 2016
this movie is the greatest on the topic of gang member's story, has totally new concept, so the rating needs to be above 8, i'll advise people to stop rating low without watching the full movie. the movie has off the hook story , has good script, fresh acting, new mindset and the viewers wants this type of movie in the crime , action, thriller type of movie, which is well served. i'll say it's a must watch for people who are interested in such type of movie topics. also have a bit of time period in kisses & sex in the car(just one adult scene which include all these in a period of 3 minutes approx), but it's OK, i'll say because some viewers wants it and also the storyline is very strong. watch and help increase the rating, because it is one of the best movie of this genre for me! acting is realistic, genuine, bind you for full movie times, plot is never weak, i loved the new concept, and a full package for crime, thriller, fight, action and a bit of mystery puts a high standard to other movies for this category.

Fantastic!
tbridges-5155729 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I really liked this movie. So many features have no end. They just stop or run out of money or ideas or they're so artsy I don't get it. And that is frustrating. I prefer the old way, when the good guy got the girl and came out on top!

You get that and so much more with "The Midnight Man"!

Although you can't call the protagonist in this film the good guy. He's far from that. But you will root for him to win!

And somehow, with all his flaws, it's right that he prevails.

I highly recommend this movie.

We were trying to see the other film of the same name released in 2016 but were presented with this instead.

I truly feel we lucked out!

Open your mind and give it a go!

You'll thank me if you like a fast paced movie with enough twists to keep you guessing.
