- While Bailey faces dire consequences for her reckless behavior, Cristina interviews candidates for Dr. Russell's replacement. Alex returns with a motive, disappointment hits Callie and Derek brings forth a shocking proposal to Meredith.
- Derek is in D.C. while his sister is still staying with Meredith at the house.
In the locker room, the residents notice that Jo has "stress hives" all over her back. They're all worried that one of them is going to be fired. Stephanie says she's going to keep her head down and stay out of trouble. Jo says they should be standing out. Shane doesn't know what to do, lay low or stand out. Ben thinks he's on the block because he was the last one in, but the rest say Bailey and Webber will keep him safe.
Braden's T-cell counts are improving and it seems he's ready to come out of the bubble, but Bailey knows she can't send him home until she tells his parents the truth about how she treated him. And she has to tell the board first. She finds Cristina and tells her about the method she used and that she did it against his parents' wishes. Cristina asks if it worked and gives Bailey a high-five when she learns that it did. Bailey heads off to tell the parents, noting she "just informed the board."
Callie catches April and Jackson in the O.B. area, but they don't tell her why they're there.
Cristina is interviewing potential replacements for Dr. Russell, but Meredith thinks "something is coming" as a punishment for Cristina leaving.
Jo is overly eager to help April around the E.R. April gives Jo a car accident patient who comes in.
Braden's parents are excited that he's getting better and they thank Bailey for "hearing us and letting him get better on his own." Bailey comes clean, though, and tells them Braden did not get better on his own and that she gave him the treatment they didn't approve. They look stunned. We next see Bailey in a conference room defending herself to Hunt and trying to get Stephanie, who is also there, off the hook -- but Hunt says Stephanie is involved because she knew and didn't report it. He leaves to get a lawyer on the phone and tells them both not to move.
The lawyer gets the facts about Braden's parents' lack of consent down, then asks Bailey if she's told anyone else about this. She says she told Cristina, "as a representative of the board," and she gave her a high-five. Jackson asks Bailey if she apologized, but she says she made no mistake to apologize for. She chose not to honor their wishes.
Shane impresses Arizona with his assessment of Jake, a baby who was born with his intestines outside of his body. Alex shows up and asks Shane to check on a patient of his, then takes Shane's tablet.
Ben and Leah help Webber with a patient named Monica, who is in remission from rectal cancer and has poor sphincter control. She passes gas uncontrollably while Ben reads her file. Leah has trouble controlling her face. Leah unleashes a huge belch that Webber chastises her for.
Jo continues being overly responsive to April's requests while leaving Callie hanging for a moment. April also annoys Callie by calling her a "grumpus" twice.
Meredith and Amy prep for a surgery together, but Amy keeps getting phone calls.
Alex goes to his old patient's room and is quite familiar with the case. He tells the boy's parents he needs them to sign some transfer papers to get Kevin on Alex's service and he'll be able to operate that day. Outside the room, Shane tells Alex he doesn't feel good about the plan, but Alex threatens to make Shane look bad if he doesn't help him with the transfer.
Cristina is having a terrible time interviewing annoying applicants for Dr. Russell's job. Hunt comes in to pull her out of the room and ask what Bailey told her about Braden's procedure. She doesn't really remember and Hunt says it's probably better that way. He also tells her to go easy on the job candidates, noting, "they can't all be you."
Jackson tries to assure Braden's parents that Bailey's treatment helped their son, but they don't believe the data on Braden's T-cells. Braden's mother asks Jackson if he has children and he tells her that he and his wife are expecting, much to the surprise of Stephanie, who is standing next to him. He tells the parents he'll run a new set of labs himself to ease their concerns.
Callie gives Jo a hard time for being too "yes, ma'am" with April, and tells her to check herself before she wrecks herself.
Monica, a dancer, tells Leah about how she lost control of her bowels doing a pirouette and lost her job.
Arizona is angry with Alex for "poaching" Kevin. She's stunned to realize she was also betrayed by Shane. She tells Alex "this was a jerk-ass move."
Meredith tells Cristina she thinks Hunt is trying to get her to avoid giving the job to anyone else because he wants her to stay and take it herself.
In the cafeteria, Leah can't stop belching. Stephanie tells her about a magnetic sphincter that Bailey implanted in a patient, then suggests she pitch the idea to Webber for Monica.
Hunt tells Bailey that Braden's parents are possibly going to file assault and battery charges on Bailey. Ben wants to protect her, but she sends him off to pick Tucker up. After Ben leaves, Bailey asks Hunt if Braden is coming out of the bubble. He says yes and she takes a breath and says she wishes she could have seen that.
Arizona comes into the O.R. and sends Shane back to the NICU, where he's needed. She steps in to replace him.
Amy apologizes to Meredith for having been short with her earlier. She tells Meredith she loves it at the hospital and doesn't want to leave.
Webber and Leah tell Monica and her husband about what they're now calling the "magnetic butthole," and, despite hearing that the device hasn't been used this way before, her husband is extremely relieved that there's a chance it could solve her issue. She excited tells Webber she'll take it.
Callie needs to do an X-ray on the car-accident patient's leg but April is still working to clean up his head wounds. Callie and Jo both get impatient with April, finally yelling at her to put on a lead apron so they can do the X-ray. April looks directly at Callie and tells her, "I can't be in here while you do the X-ray." She says no more, but Callie understands and tells Jo to step in for April, who leaves the room.
Shane's treating the baby whose intestines are outside of his body and talking sweetly to him until the intestine sack ruptures and intestines start spilling out even more.
Arizona continues to chide Alex for poaching her patient.
Cristina interviews a candidate who seems qualified, and he asks her about the rumor that working there means one can never win a Harper Avery Award. He asks her if that's why she's leaving, adding that he wants to win one because that's "the goal.' She says no, then adds that he'll probably never win one. She says people who win the award are focused on the work, the patients. So, she says, he -- specifically -- will never win a Harper Avery if that's what he's after. She tells him to forget about the hospital because he'd be a terrible fit there.
Arizona is upset and tells Shane to leave the NICU while she tries to fix what went wrong with the baby's intestines.
Jackson tells Braden's parents that the new labs show his T-cell count is back in the normal range. Braden's mother cries and Jackson nods to Hunt to let Braden out of the bubble. He runs out and hugs his mother. Bailey and Stephanie sneak a glance at the moment from down the hall. Hunt tells Braden's father that Bailey's approach was wrong but her treatment did work. The father says Bailey is lucky Braden is still alive, noting that they're "only going to take her license, but when we're done, she'll never practice medicine again." Stephanie sees this and steps forward to say it was her fault that Braden got the treatment.
Stephanie tells Braden's father that she forgot to tell Bailey that they changed their minds about withdrawing their consent. He starts shouting about how it's not acceptable that they would just blow it off as "a mistake," but his wife calls him over and tells her that because Braden is doing fine, they should probably just go home.
Webber walks Leah through the placement of the magnetic sphincter.
Callie spots April and asks how far along she is. April says 10 weeks and shows her the ultrasound photo. Callie starts crying. April realizes that's why Callie has "been such a grumpus," and Callie insists that's not a word. April explains that her mom says it because it sounds so stupid it's hard to stay angry. Callie tells her that she's developed several adhesions since her car accident, so she can't carry another baby. Jo comes up to apologize to both of them for shouting earlier, and says they heard one of the residents is getting fired and she's worried it could be her. They both say, "Could be."
Amy says she's ready to have a hard conversation with her boyfriend James and tell him she's ready to break his heart, tell him she loves him but she can't "do this" anymore.
Bailey can't stand that Stephanie is lying, but Hunt tells her that she needs to let it go because Braden's parents have agreed to drop all the charges in exchange for a one-week suspension for Stephanie. After Hunt leaves, Stephanie says she was "looking at the bigger picture" in trying to ensure that Bailey was around for others to benefit from the procedure she did with Braden. Then Stephanie adds that she might not be around next year, so she was just rolling the dice anyway. Bailey hugs her and says she's not going anywhere without a fight from Bailey.
Webber pulls Leah, who is happy looking at Monica, aside and tells her she's very bright and will be a "very good doctor," but tells her she's "not a surgeon." He tells her she'd only fall farther behind next year and that a surgical residency just isn't the right fit for her. He tells her that letting her go "isn't a punishment, it's a kindness." He tells her he'd be happy to recommend her for a position with a research lab at the University of Washington. She cries and thanks him.
Alex finds Arizona in the nursery and she asks him if he came to "steal more babies." He apologizes and tells her he's drowning at the new practice because he isn't bringing in new patients. She tells him he can call her and tells her when he's in trouble and needs help.
Bailey has to explain herself to Ben, who worries that Bailey made a risky move that might not have been totally necessary. She says Braden was dying and she made something out of nothing -- turning a virus that kills into something that saved the kid's life.
As they leave the hospital, Jackson tells April she can send the ultrasound to his mom. He admits he told Stephanie, but says it was an accident.
The residents continue worrying about who's getting fired, but Leah tells the others that they're going to be fine. Stephanie says that's easy for her to say because of her big victory in the O.R. Stephanie and Jo leave, then Shane stops and asks Leah if she really believes he's going to be OK. Leah, without giving any more detail, says yes with a smile. She sends him off and says she'll meet him at the bar.
Laying in bed, Arizona tells Callie that she could carry the baby herself. Callie worries that if it goes badly, they won't make it and she doesn't want to put them in that position. Callie says they have a beautiful life and a beautiful daughter, "and that can be enough, right?" Arizona agrees, and tells Callie she loves her. They hug and kiss.
Hunt asks Cristina about the candidates. She says they're fine, except the humble bragger. Hunt sits down and tells her the Harper Avery Foundation is trying to mend fences with the hospital after what happened to her, and he mentions a large cash inclusion into the cardio department that could help them attract better talent. She stops him and asks him not to offer her the job. He says he wanted to for about a week, but realized that she has to go and that nothing good can come of him asking her to stay, so he won't. He gets up to leave, then says he will ask her something else. He kisses her and says, "Don't leave me."
Derek gets home with a bottle of champagne and Meredith is happy to see him. She tells him that all of their problems are resolved because Amy wants to stay in Seattle and will help with the kids while they're all working at the hospital, but Derek has other plans. He says he met the president, who wants to make the meetings a weekly thing. He's been offered a position at the NIH and can do his brain mapping work there, and they've promised to have an attending position at James Madison Hospital for Meredith. He says Alex is leaving, Cristina is moving, and this could be his and Meredith's next step.
