Frantic campers scavenge a park ranger’s rucksack inside his abandoned jeep. A shipwrecked sailor drags their waterproof emergency kit ashore. Apocalypse survivors raid a hardware depot after zombies chase civilization far away. Three different horror movie scenarios, all adding a holy grail item to whichever characters’ arsenal. Maybe loaded into a chamber, possibly as a roadside marker, but in any form, someone hoists an invaluable and iconic illumination tool: the almighty flare. Spark it, blast it, or blaze it for instantaneous cinematic ferocity and alarm.

Mexican producer-director Iria Gómez Concheiro is unveiling at Guadalajara “Here Be Dragons,” a co-production between her own label Ciudad Cinema – alongside exec producer Rodrigo Ríos Legaspi – and Colombia’s Trilce Cinema, with Alejandro Rey and Claudia Sánchez.
Set in a vaguely anachronistic 2040, “Here Be Dragons” is a sci-fi drama-adventure movie which follows 18-year old Candelaria as she tries to survive an uncertain, devastated country where sinister military forces rule.
Fearing an imminent barbaric invasion, Candelaria flees from her father and a chaotic, brutal regime, while undertaking an initiatory trip to unveil the truth about love and this menace. The title refers to the Latin inscription “hic sunt dracones” (dragons are here) used on old navigational maps to signal unexplored or dangerous areas.
Project “Here Be Dragons” wil be prsented at the Guadalajara Festival Co-Production Meetings from Sunday.
Previously it has been put through the Morelia Lab, where it won a special mention,...

Since 1993’s Cronos, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro quickly became synonymous with horror hailing from Mexico. More recent releases like Issa Lopez‘s Tigers Are Not Afraid, Emilio Portes‘s Belzebuth, and even Gigi Saul Guerrero‘s Culture Shock indicate an emerging new class of talented genre contemporaries. While that’s exciting for horror’s future, there’s already a vast, rich history of Mexican […]...

American character actor Tobin Bell is, of course, a true horror star after appearing throughout the entire Saw franchise as the antagonist John Kramer, aka Jigsaw. More recently, Bell has worked on other movies of this genre, including the Mexican production Belzebuth, directed by Emilio Portes, and The Call, which just hit theaters and drive-ins in the US last Friday, October 2. Directed by Timothy Woodward Jr., The Call follows a group of teenagers who hold a grudge against an old lady, Edith Cranston (Lin Shaye), who’s apparently a witch and the unpunished responsible party for the disappearance years ago of a local girl, the sister of one of the teen protagonists. The new kid on the block, Chris (Chester Rushing), soon joins the “tradition”...

Now with the month of June pretty much in our rearview, it’s time to look forward to a new month of VOD and Digital releases headed our way throughout the month of July. There’s a lot of great content coming out over the next few weeks, so even though most movie theaters won’t be open, you’ll still have plenty of stuff to keep you entertained from the comfort of your own home.
Some of the highlights for July’s Digital and VOD releases include Homewrecker and Belzebuth on July 7th (the latter had previously been streaming exclusively on Shudder until now), The Beach House on July 9th, Relic on July 10th (this debut from Natalie Erika James was one of my favorite films out of Sundance 2020), the cult classic Rad, which has several digital release dates in July, Joko Anwar’s Impetigore on July 23rd (another...

"He has experienced evil in its deepest, darkest form." Rlje Films has debuted an official Us trailer for an indie horror titled Belzebuth, which originally premiered in 2017 at the Sitges Film Festival, and in 2018 at the Brussels Fantastic Film Festival. It's finally getting an official VOD release this summer. Special Agent Emanuel Ritter leads a police investigation into a series of strange, shocking deaths. But after a priest from the Vatican finds a link between the murders and an ancient demon, a descent into horror ensues. Starring Tobin Bell from the Saw franchise and Joaquín Cosío from "The Strain", "Belzebuth is a dark, terrifying new tale of demonic possession." The cast includes Tate Ellington, Giovanna Zacarías, Aurora Gil, and Aida López. I feel like everyone is over these possession horror films, yet they still keep making them. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Emilio Portes' Belzebuth, direct from Rlje's YouTube...

Another year has come and gone, and it was another great one for horror. Theatrical horror, indie horror, physical media, streaming, books, TV—there was so much good stuff I couldn’t even get to all of it, though I gave it my best effort. Here are some of my favorites of 2019 in no particular order.
Shudder: In just a few short years, Shudder has become the single most essential must-have for every horror fan. Their library grows more expansive and impressive every week, their curation of beloved favorites, smaller and lesser-known indies, and horror from around the globe impeccable. This year alone they featured the likes of Tigers Are Not Afraid, the Tom Savini documentary Smoke and Mirrors, One Cut of the Dead, Belzebuth, The Furies, Get My Gun, Hagazussa, Knife + Heart, The Ranger, the documentary Horror Noire, The Head Hunter, and so, so many more. A number...

What with Halloween and other pagan rituals, October is always a big month on the horror calendar, so it's no big surprise that streaming service Shudder will be unleashing big titles during the month. Still ... ! The widest-known titles to come are One Cut of the Dead and Tigers Are Not Afraid and their specific dates are, er, not yet known. (We're eager to hear as well.) And, as we've covered previously, NOS4A2, Belzebuth, Incident in a Ghostland and The Wrath have recently debuted on the service and all are worth checking out for varying reasons. Yet to come in September is Hell House LLC III: Lake of Fire (September 19) and original Shudder anthology series Creepshow (September 26). Enough ado, though; here are...

"The Pope himself asked us to look into cases..." Raven Banner has released an official promo trailer for the indie horror film Belzebuth, the latest film from Mexican director Emilio Portes. Set on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border, the film is about a Detective investigating the deaths of young children at the border. What seems like a clear case becomes much more intense when a priest of the Vatican appears with another point of view. Tobin Bell (from the Saw series) plays that priest, sporting a pretty gnarly beard along with markings all over his body. Belzebuth also stars Joaquín Cosio, Aida López, Tate Ellington, Giovanna Zacarías, Norma Angélica, Jose Sefami, Yunuen Pardo. This is a freaky trailer and it does a good job of selling this, but I want to see more of what's really going on. Here's the first promo trailer (+ poster) for Emilio Portes' Belzebuth,...

While there's always been a certain darkness to the films of Mexico's Emilio Portes - winner of a fistful of Mexican academy awards for his Alex de la Iglesia styled action horror comedy Pastorela - that darkness has always been balanced out against a certain playfulness. But not this time. Not when you're dealing with the story of renegade priests and the slaughter of innocent children to clear a path for the arrival of the antichrist. Portes' next will be the very serious minded horror effort Belzebuth, a film that clearly has plans to expand Portes' international audience playing out in a blend of English and Spanish as the fight against the devil spans both sides of the border while pulling in a bearded -...
