Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • At the start of the movie, Mark Watney has to operate on himself to remove an antenna he was impaled by earlier. This is very detailed and blood is shown. This may be very disturbing for younger viewers.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • There is a close up depiction of an emergency self-surgery towards the beginning of the movie that is fairly detailed. There is a fair amount of blood shown seeping from the wound and the main character is shown wincing from the pain.
  • The main character's habitat on Mars is damaged when the airlock he is in explodes, causing his food supply to die off. He is not hurt but is extremely concerned about his survival. It is very loud and sudden and can be scary for some viewers.
  • The ending scene where the main character is blasting off into space is very long and dramatic and can be stressful for some viewers. At one point he is rendered unconscious by the intense G-forces.
