British actress Eleanor Tomlinson has given a full explanation of why she has made a default decision not to film sex scenes, with very few, fully justified exceptions.
The star of BBC drama Poldark, and an upcoming Channel 4 drama The Couple Next Door about intimate partner-swapping, told The Times newspaper that, for one particular sex scene in the latter, she was convinced on-screen nudity would distract from the narrative.
She said:
“I have done nudity before but, for me, it’s based on each project and how necessary I feel it is. And I didn’t feel like it was for this. I mean, there was a conversation where they were pushing for it and the harder they pushed for it, the more I felt like saying, ‘No, you’re just not being creative here. “The Gilded Age,” Julian Fellowes’ critically lauded follow-up to “Downton Abbey,” has returned for a second season on HBO. Although “The Gilded Age” slightly alters the formula that made “Downton Abbey” so popular, swapping out turn-of-the-century England for a rapidly developing America in the late 1800s, it takes place just a few decades before its predecessor. Does that just reflect Fellowes’ fascination with a particular period? Or should we take it as a sign from a master of the genre that this is the ideal setting for a period piece TV show?

Exclusive: The Guildhall School of Music & Drama, a top London drama school, had a racist culture in which multiple Black students were called the N-word and were “suppressed” by white tutors, according to an external investigation.
Guildhall, which counts Daniel Craig, Ewan McGregor, and Michaela Coel among its alumni, commissioned an independent review into discrimination experienced by students on its prestigious acting course following the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020. BritBox carries a host of beloved British programming, including dark and brooding detective shows like “Luther,” the more old-school sleuthing of “Father Brown,” or following Hyacinth Bucket from hedge to hedge as she peeks in her neighbors’ windows in “Keeping Up Appearances.”
The good news is that there is still a way for new users to get BritBox at the old price of $7.99 per month. That’s by signing up through Amazon's Prime Video Channels, which still offers BritBox at $7.99 per month after a seven-day free trial.

One of the stars of a British TV show currently in production has boasted that the set is so sexy, bosses have drafted in not one but two intimacy coordinators.
Aidan Turner – star of The Hobbit films and the title role in hit BBC drama Poldark – told The Times newspaper that filming the drama Rivals for Disney+ is the most fun he’s had in his two-decade acting career.
He said: “We have so much sex on our show, we have to have two intimacy coaches. Two!”
Rivals is based on the 1988 bestselling romp-novel by Jilly Cooper of the same name – the second in her hit Rutshire Chronicles books, chronicling the 1980s excess of the lives and many loves of well-to-do characters on the polo fields and in the television studios of the picturesque Cotswolds, in the west of England. Millions of fans across the world have now watched Queen Charlotte and King George fall in love, against the odds, in the new spinoff of Netflix's immensely popular show "Bridgerton." And while their palpable chemistry and steamy love scenes have likely inspired a fresh slate of fan fiction, the onscreen lovers' tale already continues on the page, thanks to the woman responsible for the entire Bridgerton universe.
Just days after "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story" began streaming on Netflix this month, author Julia Quinn's novelization of the drama series was published. Whereas Quinn's Bridgerton book series inspired the similarly titled show, Netflix adaptation's spinoff project served as the seed for the "Queen Charlotte" book.
"I think people sort of thought we were off in a room somewhere [writing]," Quinn tells Popsugar. "I got the scripts when [series creator Shonda Rhimes] was done. So she did her thing, and then I did my thing.

Luther’s back. Being banged up at the end of Series 5 didn’t stop that growly genius from taking on a new case and a new villain in Bond-inspired Netflix movie The Fallen Sun. And, since most of his former colleagues were spectacularly killed in the line of duty, the man’s being joined by a fresh cast.
Dermot Crowley returns as John Luther’s former boss Dsu Martin Schenk, who’s joined by Cynthia Erivo as Luther’s replacement on the team, and far from his biggest fan. Going toe-to-toe with Idris Elba’s John will be Andy Serkis as surveillance tech billionaire David Robey, possibly the detective’s darkest foe yet.

Though you’ll undoubtedly forget many times while you’re watching it, Prime Video’s music drama Daisy Jones & The Six is not based on a true story. At least, not really. Adapted from Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel of the same name, this series about the titular band was inspired by the real life drama of classic ’70s rock group Fleetwood Mac.
While Fleetwood Mac is very much real (and great!), Daisy Jones & The Six is not real (though also great!). Still, that does not make the Behind the Music-esque drama they experience in these 10 episodes feel any less real. Contributing to that sense of verisimilitude is that the cast of Daisy Jones & The Six all fit their roles to a tee.

If police drama remains the bedrock of British TV commissions, with 2022 having welcomed crime series Karen Pirie, Marlow, Magpie Murders, The Responder, Sherwood and many more, broadcasters also gave us a glittering seam of new fantasy and horror. Last year saw a host of new British supernatural and sci-fi series, from Joe Barton’s sci-fi action-thriller The Lazarus Project and the criminally since-cancelled YA Netflix fantasy The Bastard Son & the Devil Himself, BBC Three teen horror Red Rose, Sky dark comedy The Baby, as well as a new telling of John Wyndham’s spooky children classic The Midwich Cuckoos.
Then there were shows that combined both threads, such as Amazon Prime’s mind-twisting The Devil’s Hour starring Peter Capaldi and Jessica Raine, and Pete Jackson’s excellent debut Somewhere Boy. And some new British TV shows didn’t even feature a single murder, like Netflix’s adored Heartstopper graphic novel adaptation.

What do wizards, blancmange and cat killers have in common? They’re all subjects of songs by Melin Melyn, of course.

Another new “Star Wars” series has arrived on Disney+, but this one is different. “Andor” is set years before the events of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and follows the exploits of Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor, but in contrast to the previous live-action shows like “The Mandalorian” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” this is a decidedly grounded and gritty take on the “Star Wars” universe – and one completely devoid of Jedi and Sith and bounty hunters. In short, it’s a “Star Wars” story set in a new pocket of the universe, about real people struggling with the very real oppression of the Empire.
Luna anchors the ensemble but there’s an impressive cast of characters that show up in the first few episodes, and no doubt many more to come throughout the 12-episode first season. Check out our complete “Andor” cast and character guide below.

Aren’t we all sick to the teeth of British crime thrillers by now? The major broadcasters – BBC, ITV, Channels 4 and 5, they’re all to blame – have whittled down the genre to a slick, revoltingly homogenous formula. Just switch out a few proper nouns, spin a wheel to decide who the killer is, and roll film. The Suspect, ITV’s latest five-episode mystery drama, is made in exactly this mould – if you’d told me I was watching Vigil, or Trigger Point, I’d have believed you. But does that make it bad? Not necessarily.
At the centre of The Suspect is Aidan Turner, playing Joe O’Loughlin, an eminent clinical psychologist whom we meet as he talks a young brain tumour patient down from a ledge. In an instant, he becomes the “rooftop hero doctor” to the world. Privately, however, he’s struggling with a recent diagnosis of early-onset Parkinson’s disease.

Aidan Turner has explained why he finds it “vaguely insulting” when fans request a selfie with him.
The 39-year-old Irish actor rose to fame for leading BBC One’s 2015 drama series Poldark, which ran for five seasons.
Promoting his newest ITV series, The Suspect – which premiered earlier today (29 August) – Turner spoke to What to Watch about “bizarre” fan interactions.
“It’s usually for a selfie but what I find funny is they’ll often say, ‘It’s not for me. It’s for my mum who is a big fan’, or ‘My little brother loves that thing you were in,’” he explained.
“Which is cool, but it’s just bizarre. I know it happens to a lot of other actors too. It’s vaguely insulting!” Turner said.

Disney+ has greenlit a new eight-part series titled Rivals, based on the popular novel by British author Jilly Cooper.
Set in the fictional upper-class county of Rutshire, Rivals dives headfirst into the cutthroat world of independent television in 1986 when a long-standing rivalry between two powerful men is about to boil over: ex-Olympian, Member of Parliament, and notorious womanizer Rupert Campbell-Black, and his Rutshire neighbor Tony Baddingham, controller of the independent TV franchise Corinium Television.
As tensions rise and rivalries deepen, there are spilled secrets, forged alliances, and snatched liaisons that draw wives, lovers, colleagues, friends, and families into their battle.
“The combination of Jilly Cooper and Disney+ is delightfully unexpected. We were thrilled when Dominic brought us these iconic books, and we leapt at the chance to bring them to life. We can’t wait to welcome Rupert Campbell-Black and the residents of Rutshire to the platform,” said Lee Mason,...

Aidan Turner has said that he “did not feel objectified” over the now-infamous scenes showing his character shirtless in the hit drama series Poldark.
In 2015, the 39-year-old actor was pictured shirtless with a scythe in a field as he starred as the titular character in the BBC One historical drama.
In a new interview with Radio Times, Turner was asked if it was safer to make a big deal of the old photograph because it was a young man.
He replied, saying: “Would it have been handled the same way in the press if it was a young woman? I don’t know. Possibly not.
“But I didn’t feel objectified,” Turner added.
This isn’t the first time the Leonardo star has spoken out about his famous shirtless photograph.
Earlier this month, he told The Times that he “didn’t feel objectified” following the debate about the picture.

The race is on to bring the already notorious ‘Wagatha Christie’ defamation trial to our screens, following this week’s conclusion at London’s High Court.
The battle between footballers’ wives Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy (married to Wayne Rooney and Jamie Vardy respectively) concluded after two and a half long years, with the judge ruling in favour of Rooney. Vardy had originally brought the case to court, claiming defamation after Rooney unveiled her as the culprit behind a roll-call of stories about her and her family leaked to the press. Rooney had laid a trap for Vardy restricting her Instagram account so that she knew who could see her posts, leading to the day she announced on social media the results of her investigation, saying, “It’s….. Rebekah Vardy.” Thus was #WagathaChristie born.
When Vardy’s case for libel finally arrived in the British courtroom, weeks of witness statements...
