Quick Links Hot Shot Debuted In a Forgotten Transformers Anime Hot Shot Was the Face of the Unicron Trilogy Why a New Transformers Anime Must Bring Back Hot Shot
The Transformers franchise has increasingly used a shrinking list of the same characters, with each new series more or less retreading the same Autobots and Decepticons. Chief among these numbers are Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron and Starscream, with the yellow Autobot Bumblebee becoming something of a mascot for the brand. This wasn't always the case, however, and Bumblebee's place in the franchise was briefly taken by a now-forgotten character.

Many different actors have played the iconic Transformers character Optimus Prime over the years. The franchise, which is a collaboration between Hasbro in America and Takara Tomy in Japan, originally kicked off when the Takara Tomy toy lines Micro Change and Diaclone were rebranded in the West in 1984, accompanied by an animated series bringing the characters from the lines to life. Optimus Prime, whose Japanese name is Convoy, was one of the original Transformers characters during this rebrand launch.
Since it originated, the Transformers franchise has expanded to include a vast array of further toy lines and animated shows as well as additional multimedia properties including animated and live-action movies, comic books, video games, and more. Newly-revealed concept art for a 2010s Transformers cartoon showcases how different the series could have been.
Unveiled by the website Night Shining, concept art for the series that became Transformers: Prime has been released over ten years after the show debuted. According to these preliminary concepts, the show was at the time simply referred to as Transformers: Robots In Disguise, which was a title previously given to a 2000-2001 Transformers anime. The Transformers franchise has been rolling out since 1984, with Hasbro and Takara's robots in disguise taking many different forms over the years. The most popular of these characters include the likes of Autobot leader Optimus Prime, as well as several other different Cybertronians. Beyond the Autobots and Decepticons, however, there are several other groups of Transformers that more casual fans might be unaware of.
Ever since the days of Generation 1, the main Transformers allegiances have hosted various subgroups. These all had their own gimmicks, with some of them even combining to form even more powerful and gigantic robots. Likewise, new entries in the franchise have added their own subgroups and factions, with one series even replacing the Autobots and Decepticons entirely.

Optimus Prime has a wide range of powers and abilities beyond what is shown in the Transformers movies, including field reconnaissance gadgets and unique alt-modes. His non-lethal powers, such as the power stream and various hand tools, prove to be highly effective in non-combat situations and can prevent damage to the environment and property. Optimus Prime's unique offensive powers, such as the gyro strike and rocket punch, catch Decepticons off guard and demonstrate his intelligence and fighting skills.
In the Transformers movies, Optimus Prime utilizes a wide variety of unique powers and abilities to dispatch his rival Decepticons, but the Autobot leader is capable of doing so much more than what the films have shown. In the Michael Bay-produced Transformers movies, Optimus Prime is seen using his enhanced strength, speed, and durability, flight, expert marksmanship, and hand-to-hand combat skills, and master leadership skills to guide his fellow Autobots to victory on the battlefield.

Actor Peter Spellos had over 150 screen acting and vocal performance credits to his name, but genre fans are most likely to remember him as Orville Ketchum from the slasher movie Sorority House Massacre II and its companion piece Hard to Die, as well as the brief appearance he made as the character Tracy’s father in Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare. Outside of horror, he’s best known for providing the voice of Sky-Byte in 39 episodes of the animated series Transformers: Robots in Disguise. Transformers has many characters that evolve from the original 1984 series. Optimus Prime serves as an impressive paragon of growth and evolution over the many iterations of his iconic character. Optimus Prime's evolution showed him grow from a strong leader to a soldier with a dark side and themany struggles that came with those changes.
The Transformers franchise launched in 1984 with the Hasbro line of toys. Based on the conflict between the heroic Autobots and the hostile Decepticons, Transformers has a myriad of stories in the form of comics, movies, and animated television series that accompany the toys. The first media tie-ins were originally created with the intent of helping sell the toys, but what really makes Transformers popular isn’t the exciting merchandise but the characters that are at the center of the stories. The following contains spoilers for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, in theaters now.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts notably features both the Autobots and their Maximals descendants, though the Decepticons are nowhere to be seen. Instead, the villains of this movie are the Terrorcons, who are led by Scourge. Nothing at all like the G1 Combiner team, they instead bear more resemblance to other interpretations of the faction.
Beyond the original cartoon, the Terrorcons have also appeared in Transformers: Energon and Transformers: Prime. These takes were much more like the ones seen in the movie, with the majority of the faction being mindless drones. Thus, while it isn't exactly accurate to Generation 1, Rise of the Beasts does draw upon other continuities to inform its villain.

The following contains spoilers for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, now in theaters.
In bringing several familiar Maximals to the table, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is delivering on fan service from the franchise's most animalistic era. Though it's somewhat overlooked now amid more classic incarnations such as Generation 1, the Beast Era gave rise to characters and concepts that continue to influence Hasbro's transformative property. In fact, one Cybertonian in the new movie hails from an obscure part of Transformers history.
Right before Beast Wars began, the popular "BotCon" conventions gave a voice to the franchise's growing fandom. In the coming years, it would reward said fandom with exclusive figures, many of which have gone on to become important in the series' lore. One example of this is Apelinq, a Maximal whose biggest break is in the latest movie.

Ever since 1984, Hasbro's Transformers franchise has had a myriad of forms and permutations. From Generation 1 to the Unicron Trilogy and other universes, these continuities have mostly been separate from each other. While this has given fans numerous takes on iconic characters, the result has been a largely disparate, inconsistent and frequently restarting narrative.
The 2010s finally brought a solution to this issue with the so-called "Aligned Continuity." Meant to fix the issue of constantly rebooting the franchise, this continuity was a catch-all for the various comic books, video games and cartoons of the era. The problem was that in the case of the latter, the productions and stories were more increasingly divergent than ever. Due to this unintended confusion, the planned salvation of the property was dropped completely, ending the Aligned Continuity with a thud.

The Transformers franchise has a new villain, as Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, but who is the Transformers Scourge villain, and how does he connect to the mythology? The seventh entry in the live-action franchise based on Hasbro's toys is finally introducing some of the biggest characters from the Beast Wars storylines. After focusing strictly on the Autobots and Decepticons before, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is bringing Maximals, Terrorcons, and Predacons. This allows the film to include popular Maximals like Optimus Primal alongside returning Autobots like Optimus Prime and Bumblebee.
In the previous six Transformers movies, a Decepticon has been the central antagonist for the Autobots and their human allies. Megatron has been a recurring villain in several films, while The Fallen, Shockwave, Lockdown, and Quintessa have all threatened the Autobots and humanity in Michael Bay's sequels. The Transformers have reinvented themselves in various universes countless times. Even 2018's Bumblebee was a reboot of the Michael Bay movies that offered more G1-accurate looks for its characters. Because of the massive shift in direction in such a short time, it raised the question of whether or not this new era was even slightly related to what came before.

Prolific animation writer-producer Nicole Dubuc will receive the WGA West’s 2018 Animation Writers Caucus Animation Writing Award tonight at the annual Awc awards ceremony at the guild’s headquarters in Los Angeles.

Earlier this year, a dream team of writers assembled to plan out the future of the "Transformers" franchise. Up until now, only two projects seemed to be officially announced as a result of that collaboration - a fifth main film in the series, and an animated spinoff that revolves around the Transformer home world of Cybertron.
This weekend though, Hasbro has confirmed that three additional direct sequels are already planned and will carry the franchise well into the 2020s. Appearing at the Mip Junior Conference, Hasbro's Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer Stephen J. Davis spoke about where the franchise is headed in the wake of that 'Transformers' brains trust collaboration:

Transformers: Robots in Disguise place years after “Transformers Prime,” when Bumblebee is summoned to save Earth from a new faction of Decepticons and assembles a rogue team of young Autobots that includes a rebel bad boy bot, an elite guard cadet, a bombastic Dinobot and hyperactive Mini-Con to capture their new enemies. Each new bot is a fully capable action hero but inexperienced in working together in a team, forcing Bumblebee to become both squad leader and coach, Hasbro said. The show will feature voice actors such as Darren Criss, Constance Zimmer, Mitchell Whitfield and Ted McGinley. Also from the article: "[the] creative team includes kids programming vets Jeff Kline (“Transformers Prime”) as executive producer; producer Adam Beechen (“The Adventures of Chuck and Friends”); and Steven Melching, a writer on “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” who will serve as the show’s story editor. - Variety...
