Spoilers to follow…
All of the Marvel/Netflix shows are only tangentially-related to the movies of the McU, but The Punisher is even more removed than most. For obvious reasons, it would take the viewer out of the story if we were reminded that aliens and gods and whatnot existed in the same world as a gritty, gun-toting vigilante. However, it is a Marvel product and so, The Punisher does feature a very sneaky easter egg that name-checks one of the Avengers.
In episode 6, “The Judas Goat,” Lewis Wilson (Daniel Webber) murders O’Connor – who lied about being a veteran – in a fit of rage. As he’s attacking the guy, we can briefly see a stack of old VHS tapes and DVDs atop O’Connor’s TV, and one of them is titled Black Widow.
See for yourself in the screenshot below:
No, this isn’t suggesting that there...

When Frank Castle was first introduced to Marvel and Netflix’s small-screen universe via Daredevil season 2, he was very much angled as the vengeful antithesis of Matt Murdock – “you hit ’em and they get back up; I hit ’em and they stay down!” But for The Punisher spinoff series, showrunner Steve Lightfoot plans to present the “human side” of Jon Bernthal’s mercenary across its 13-episode arc.
Based on what we’ve seen so far of the upcoming Netflix show, it’ll flit between the present and Frank’s harrowing past to showcase how his days spent serving in the Us Marines shaped and molded him into the one-man-army that hones in on the crooks and thieves populating Hell’s Kitchen. Think of him as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen without the training wheels – without the moral compass and Murdock’s ability (weakness?) to lend everyone a second chance.

The first trailer for ‘The Punisher‘ has arrived! The Jon Bernthal led Netflix series received it’s first trailer following the final episode’s credits of ‘The Defenders‘, and it is surely a great tease of what’s to come with the series. Season 2 of Netflix’s ‘Daredevil‘ introduced Bernthal’s version of The Punisher to modern audiences, and his popularity in that show led to ‘The Punisher‘ solo series. Although no premiere date is currently set, we basically know nothing about the plot of the series – except that it will most likely be some sort of origin story. Here’s the synopsis for the series:
After exacting revenge on those responsible for the death of his wife and children, Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) uncovers a conspiracy that runs far deeper than New York’s criminal underworld. Now known throughout the city as The Punisher, he must discover the truth...

Up until now, Marvel and Netflix have been curiously quiet about The Punisher spinoff.
Perhaps in fear that any press and/or marketing would overshadow the launch of The Defenders, an eight-part miniseries designed to round up the street-level heroes of New York City, the Frank Castle solo outing has remained in the shadows for months now.
But following a small presence at San Diego Comic-Con, coupled with that blood-pumping end-credits scene that came attached to The Defenders, it seems Marvel and Netflix are ready to court The Punisher into the limelight. And not a moment too soon.
Granted, there’s been nary a mention of an exact release date for the 13-part standalone series, but Empire has now published a pair of behind-the-scenes action shots. Included in the outlet’s October issue, which crowned Star Wars: The Last Jedi to be its cover star, these photos actually found their...

Frank’s military past comes knocking in this new, high-res action shot for The Punisher.
Unveiled via Empire, the image below essentially confirms that Marvel and Netflix’s imminent standalone series, one that’s due to premiere by the end of 2017, will delve deep into Frank Castle and his time spent serving in the Us Marine Corps. Those pre-Punisher days ultimately planted the seed for Frank’s violent alter-ego, which flares into life soon after his wife and children are murdered in cold blood.
Left nursing Ptsd and a volatile, near-uncontrollable rage, it’s clear that The Punisher will flit between Frank’s haunting past and the present day to show how the former shapes the latter. Indeed, lead star Jon Bernthal believes Frank Castle’s vigilantism is the “only thing that silences the demons.” Temporarily, mind you.

You might not know the name Chris Smith, but you’ll probably have seen at least one of his films. In 2004 he made the tube (even more?) terrifying with horror movie Creep, and a decade later he took on Father Christmas in the underrated Get Santa. With a varied filmography spanning horror, comedy, and historical action under his belt, Chris has gone stateside for his latest film – a neo-noir road trip movie starring Tye Sheridan, Emory Cohen and Bel Powley. We caught up with him for a quick chat about writing and directing Detour, and what he’s moving onto next.
Were there any films in particular that inspired the stylistic feel of Detour, and how much of the film did you visualise when working on the script?

Ahead of the UK premiere of his latest film Detour at Horror Channel FrightFest Glasgow, Chris Smith tells us the importance of FrightFest, his love of ‘film Noir’ and his hatred of reality TV…
FrightFest has premiered all your genre movies Creep, Severance, Triangle, Black Death, except Get Santa obviously. Is this positioning an important part of the rollout process for you?
Firstly let me apologise for being away for so long and thank you for having me back. I wrote Get Santa because I’d just had a son and was feeling like I wanted to do something that he could watch in the next 15 years. I expected the film to take a year to come together but it ended up taking four years. My son was by that time old enough to come to the premiere with a few of his class mates.
Back to the question, Frightfest is extremely important,...
