...& the Parent's too.
scinema1 June 2015
Jobeth Williams, Richard Dreyfuss, Cynthia Stevenson, and Ed Begly Jr. They are the only reason this show keeps anyone coming back. Not hard to see why. They're seasoned actors that carry us through each formulaic episode order. This show in particular has an every-other-episode way about it.Every other episode features Williams and Dreyfuss, or Stevenson and Begly Jr. Our two main characters (Kyle Howard, Kat Foster) are a loving couple, with two kids, and probably a nice little house, white picket fence, etc. They spend each episode at either parent's house where off-the-wall issues ensue. Premise is promising. The trials and tribulations that a couple have to endure as they work through the differences and culture clash of the parents they're visiting. Each episode feature's the other side of the family. This is common ground that any married couple will have to deal with, so it's a relatively approachable and identifiable status. No big deal, except that the writing (ie-punch lines, gag response et al) are a little too predictable in this day and age. We've seen it all before. Supporting siblings (brothers sisters) are easy to pin-point. Sibling rivalry's and difference of opinion seems to be the ONLY arc that comes forth in any given episodic visit. The aforementioned four Parental units are often relegated to modern day lingo complete with swearing, sex humor, and often falling to the same cliché'd behavior as the younger characters. Perhaps this is because they are marketing it for the unfortunate younger demographic, as just about any and every network, production co. and media format seems to do. Shame. Next there is the acting itself. Our two main cast members Kyle Howard and Kat Foster are enthusiastic but amateur in their portrayals. You'd see the same thing in a standard high school or college production. They give it there best shots every episode and some of it can be adorable at best, but it always pales in comparison to the supporting players. In fact, all the supporting players who feature in every other episode are far more interesting and the cast entertaining. Some new direction and writing might clean this up, maybe. The goods surely come from said parental actors. The issue's that come with a non-original member of either family are not unfamiliar but that way either Williams and Dreyfuss, or Stevenson and Begly Jr. pull it off, it's always fun and endearing, no matter how pedestrian or acrid some of the material can be. It's all about the parent's here.

Nice sitcom, tightly written ...thou, I think they need to bring out more unpredictability, variety and eventful sets other than a kitchen and a living room :)
Aktham_Tashtush8 April 2015
Nice sitcom, tightly written .. the plot is good so far, i felt the comedy through the tension in the "Weston" family .. it's called "Your Family Or Mine" and they presented one side of the story so i think there's still more to it. So the storyline seems to be okay for a pilot ,, there were a hand full of comedy bits, i smiled i giggled .. it's the pilot so they're probably testing the audience taste but generally there off to a good start.

Yet i think they need to bring out more variety to the show , or lets say more eventful sets ,,, i mean the whole pilot was in two rooms the kitchen and the living room so i believe they need to show more sets which reflects more stories.

As a new comedy it is a huge thing that they got to be distributed by tbs so they must'v seen something special in it .,.

The casting was fine, Kat Foster is allover TV lately "Franklin & Bash","Bad Teacher", "The Goodwin Games" and even in "Royal Pains" before that ,, so they knew she's gonna be good in here ,, same goes for "Kyle Howard" from "Royal Pains" they'r making a good couple here,

so overall the pilot went okay ... lets see how it's gonna get for the couple next episodes.

The show has some funny lines. I just want to say that the use of the G** Damn bothers me and I can't believe they allow this. If it must be used can I suggest saying "golly dammit" instead. It is my opinion that GOD does not have a last name and I am sure some would agree with me. I was shocked that they could get away with this. I know the writers want it to be more realistic but seriously writers be more creative then this. The cast has some really stand up actors and I'm sure this could be a really great show if the plot lines were better and everyday issues were discussed. We don't need any more sexually explicit shows as our kids learn enough in schools and from others, yes I know that's why we have a rating system.

How can such a great cast be in such a horrible show?
webms21 April 2015
This show is truly awful. I was really enthusiastic about seeing it considering the talented cast. I was was completely disappointed at the really crude humor and poor writing. I can't believe that they were able to get these actors on the show based upon such a poor script and disgusting humor. I'm no prude, but there was no way that I would watch an additional episode. I went to the website and not surprisingly, there was no place to provide comments. Such a shame that this was not well written and relies instead on tasteless one-liners. I can't imagine that this will be continued for additional seasons unless there is a vast improvement in the story-lines and dialog.

Bad acting, and very predictable clichéd lines
jel297 April 2015
The acting is unconvincing, and the subject matter forcibly emphasizes the topic of sex, to the point where it defeats the purpose); while these factors are common in some contemporary sitcoms, this show takes them to an extreme. Also, the writing lacks creativity - the word "shitty" was used to describe a kid's drawing on the show, the dialogue and script was far too canned and contrived, the plot was predictable and simultaneously felt very unnatural (even for a sitcom), and it was flat-out boring, as the plot pandered about a singular menial premise. Judging by the trailers advertising this show leading up to its premiere, I didn't have such high hopes for this show, but I decided to give it a chance anyway - I came away very disappointed.

I watch sitcoms on a regular basis, and as far as this show goes, it falls decisively flat on its face. It's bad enough that the writing and acting are both terrible, but the plot and premise are also pointless - I will be very surprised if the show is renewed for a second season.

Awesome Actors, Flat jokes, recycled gags.
movieguy5925 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I wanted to like this show, however it's all over the place. While humor is subjective in the sense that different people think different things are funny. So maybe this just isn't my kind of humor.

I think the Hollywood needs to retire the theory that unless it revolves around sex and raunchiness it's not funny. There are at a few shows on that debunk that theory so if would be great if writers and producers, etc. catch up.

While nothing is technically original, there is still fresh ways to use recycled ideas and characters, this show tries, but falls flat.

To put it in perspective, I just watched 3rd Rock From The Sun on Netflix, and laughed harder at that, than I did in the same time span I watch Your Family or Mine.

While 3rd Rock might have used boosted and/or commanded laughter, it was much more difficult to tell between that and authentic laughter.

Maybe it's unfair to compare 3rd Rock to Your Family or Mine, but to me the two shows seem to have similar characters.

I've only seen a couple of Episodes of YFoM, so I know I should give it some time, but the start doesn't seem promising.

Oooh, edgy!
dulcie-951132 June 2015
You gotta love TV in the '10s. Say 'blow job' a lot, throw in some 'shittys,' and you are pushing that envelope! Pathetic. I hate to sound like some geezer yelling at kids, but come on. I'm not offended by the language itself, but how it seems intended to stand in for actual, you know, writing.

Family situations can always be mined for decent comedy, even after all this time. And the cast is pretty good. But really ... it seems the producers and writers just don't have the chops, maybe because they're all 25-35 years old and have seen too much garbage, and mistaken it for quality.

just bad
sharp-6046919 May 2015
The writing is crazy terrible. Crude sex references seem to be the main goal here (must take a lot of brain power to fit in a mention of blow jobs every single episode).

It's a shame because the concept of the show is interesting and different but if the plots weren't bad enough, the cast is just flat and unfunny. Did the producers of this show realize the writing was this bad and tried to save the concept by tossing in some well known names to salvage it?

Please end this show. Even re-runs of the Big Bang Theory are better than this junk.

Painfully Bad - Total Waste of Time
Man9920421 May 2015
This show is just awful.

It is amazing that anything this dreadfully bad would ever be made into a series, even on TNT. It features some of the worst writing in the History of American television.

There is not one even remotely new idea. The jokes, the characters, even the plots, have been seen so many times, in so many different series. The entire series has a "been there seen it all before" tone to it.

Veteran Actors like Richard Dryfuss shoot embarrassed looks into the camera. TNT could air a better program by recycling "Different Strokes" reruns.

Pass on this stinkeroo - you will be glad you did.

Great cast, mediocre writers and directors
itsadogsworld10 May 2015
This show has so many comedic situational possibilities but instead the writers can't get their minds off sex - honestly these great actors really need to demand a better caliber of writing. I get wanting to push the envelope but honestly after 5 jokes about sex you realize that its no different than 2 1/2 men, 2 broke girls, HIMYM except they go further and say blow job instead of insinuating it.

What was great about shows like Frasier, Everybody Loves Raymond, King of Queens, Friends, Sienfeld was the innuendo - if they actually said masturbation instead of master of my domain do your really think it would have been funny? I am a huge fan of Reno 911 and when I got the 1st season as a gift I was hoping the bleeping would remain in place, which it did, because that is what made it funny - FYI I swear like a trucker.

So unfunny it's cringe worthy.
dnadiyah2 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I desperately watch each new sitcom in the hopes of discovering something that can fill the Friends sized hole in my heart. Or maybe another Seinfeld or even a That 70s Show. Even though it's a long shot I watch at least 5 episodes to get past that teething point just in case it's a good comedy that's started shakily. With this show, I couldn't even get past two episodes and, even then, it was hard work. Thoroughly predictable writing (who hadn't guessed the Grandmother was in the drawing and not the mom, two seconds after the premise was revealed). This is so pathetic I feel sorry for the actors who have, in the past, been in some top notch stuff. A lot of comedies fall below mediocre. Your Family or Mine is worse than mediocre.. it is just thoroughly, thoroughly bad and this show deserves being cancelled. However, knowing how mediocrity is celebrated in the States this will probably run for nine seasons and syndication.

Terrible
da_beava20 May 2015
This is another in an increasingly long line of horrible TBS endeavors. The cast seems to play to the audience rather than the camera giving it a very "high school drama club" feel. The writing on this show is horrible. I have watched three episodes now and each one is worse than the last. The jokes are obvious and pedantic while the delivery feels like first year improv class. Richard Dreyfuss, Kat Foster and Angela Kinsey have all proved themselves to be capable of far better performances than what is seen here. It's almost painful to see these wonderful actors lower themselves to this public access level. I'm thoroughly disappointed with every aspect of this flying turd of a show.
