There has long been no shortage of fairy tales and mystical adventures on television – the broadcast network is filled with series for every taste and audience. The romantic travails of princesses intersect with dark mystical horror stories, and for every vampire saga there is a Winchester family ready to kill any evil creature.
And yet, among all these titles, one series stood out from the day it premiered – with an unusual approach, a wealth of imagination, charismatic characters, and a promising story.
Grimm, which debuted in 2011, ran for six seasons, and received an impressive 89% from critics and 90% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes, is not just another urban fantasy series. It successfully combines a police procedural with a story about a hunter of evil spirits; each episode is dedicated to the investigation of a crime, but it's not people who are involved but monsters from different fantasy stories.

In the second episode of Netflix’s The Grimm Variations, a cautionary folktale is turned upside down. The red cloak is turned in for a red hoodie, and Little Red Riding Hood is back in a dystopian world. The makers of this show really deserve a round of applause for the Uno reverses they keep pulling out.

Cixin Liu’s 3 Body Problem trilogy was considered unadaptable, but D.B. Weiss, David Benioff and Alexander Woo did it for Netflix. Even though Season 1 is streaming, that doesn’t mean they’ve solved Season 2. The trio joined Deadline’s Contenders TV event Sunday to discuss the adaptation, and Weiss explained why continuing the show poses even more creative problems.
“This kind of eases you into the world of the story but the story gets really wild in the best possible way,” Weiss said. “With something that’s that wild, there are a lot of choices to be made and a lot of things to be figured out. We’ve been putting our heads together to figuring them out recently especially the past couple months.”
3 Body Problem involves scientists from around the world discovering a virtual reality video game which leads them to another intergalactic species. The story spans past and present.

Law & Order: Svu Season 25 Episode 9 Review: A Disturbing Case Pushes Benson Past Her Breaking Point
Benson's mental health crisis has been brewing for a while.
She has been on edge since Maddie Flynn's disappearance and hyperfocused on Maddie's case, and later on reconnecting with a previous victim who is now a cop.
On Law & Order: Svu Season 25 Episode 9, Benson nearly crossed a line she wouldn't have been able to come back from after dealing with a particularly horrific case. Where will she go from here?
It didn't help anything that an overly curious Noah asked about William Lewis, the man who kidnapped and tortured Benson on Law & Order: Svu Season 15 Episode 1.
The brief flashback gave me the creeps, so Benson was likely triggered big time.
The perp she was dealing with seemed like a mini-Lewis in the making, too. He had little empathy or remorse, kidnapped and tormented a fifteen-year-old girl, and helped brutally rape and murder another one.

In Netflix’s sprawling sci-fi epic 3 Body Problems, Mike Evans seems to be a man with noble intentions. One day he’s trying to save an endangered species of bird, and the other day he’s trying to save all of humankind. Except for the second one, he didn’t hesitate to co-found a cult in cahoots with an alien race, who clearly doesn’t have a good intention for humanity. Evans, along with his beloved Wenjie Ye, turns out to be the primary reason for the entire mess that causes all the problems in the show. The man’s not inherently evil, though, as he takes his last breath with the belief that what he’s doing has to be for the greater good. In this article, we’re going to take a closer look at the character and the motives behind his activities in the show.

New month, new recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. The second installment of 2024 features selections reflecting holidays, events or traditions of February.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s horror offerings include reincarnation, vampires and more.
The Reincarnation of Peter Proud (1975)
Pictured: Michael Sarrazin and Jennifer O’Neill in The Reincarnation of Peter Proud.
Directed by J. Lee Thompson.
Author Max Ehrlich handled the screenplay for his own novel’s adaptation. Despite its quirky title, though, this movie is a rather surreal and sad, not to mention unpredictable viewing experience. The obsession with metaphysical matters seeped into ’70s cinema, and this trippy psycho-horror gem, one directed by J. Lee Thompson, is a valid reflection of that bygone trend.

It’s monster night on Dancing with the Stars, but I can tell you what wasn’t the least bit freaky in this week 6 episode: that bitchen, skull mirror ball hanging over the ballroom! Also not scary: guest judge Niecy Nash-Betts without a pair of Spanx on her hips; the Emmy-nominated star of Netflix’s Dahmer – Monster (get the connection to Monster Night?) claimed that she made the frightening decision to forgo the Lycra before before dressing up as Jessica Rabbit.
Speaking of which, where was your costume, host Alfonso Ribeiro? Co-host Julianne Hough came gussied up as some hooded widow, but you donned a serious, all-black dress shirt, tie and suit. Were you disguised as a member of the AMPTP negotiating committee? Now that would be scary.

“Dancing with the Stars'” move to Tuesdays this season means that its annual Halloween night will actually fall on Halloween this year.
The top nine couples will hit the floor in costumes galore on Monster Night before facing off in the dance marathon — or Dance Monster-thon. Niecy Nash-Betts will also serve as guest judge. The Argentine tango will make its season debut via three couples, while the hustle and the Charleston are the styles for the dance marathon. The judges will tap out couples one by one during the marathon and the last couple standing will be crowned Hallow king and queen. Bonus points from the marathon will be added to the individual scores.

I miss the days where virtually every TV show would have their own Halloween special, but there still are some shows that are keeping the Halloween spirit alive and we have exclusive details on Dancing with the Stars' Monster Night! Taking place on Halloween night, the special episode will feature Halloween costumes, spooky songs and Halloween-themed routines, and the return of the “Dance Monster-thon"!
"The evening promises to be a ghoulishly good time, featuring guest judge, actress and host Niecy Nash-Betts, plus the return of the Dance Marathon, “Dance Monster-thon.” All nine couples are set to join the ballroom floor at the same time, first dancing a Hustle and then a Charleston. It cannot be that one is not familiar with characters like Cinderella or Little Red Riding Hood. They have a special place in the cultural consciousness as they are characters from world-famous fairy tales. Now, a fairy tale may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but a good murder mystery is something else. Yûichi Fukuda’s Once Upon a Crime, is a whodunit spin on the fairytale universe. It’s quite an intriguing idea, and with Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood as the main characters, it becomes all the more fascinating. The story begins with the story of Little Red Riding Hood, where we see the titular character going on her adventures. This tale is known to everyone, but the twist comes when she meets Cinderella on the way and tries to get her to go to the famous ball where she will meet her ‘prince charming.’ The...

You probably didn’t imagine in your wildest of dreams that one day someone would make a film with a fairytale character as celebrated as Cinderella and turn it into a murder mystery. The famous story of Cinderella going to the ball is probably known to most fairytale aficionados. While Netflix’s latest Japanese import, titled Once Upon A Crime, is essentially a retelling of that famous fairytale, there is a pretty wild twist, which makes the film one of the weirdest things that I have seen in a while. It is right there in the title itself: in this Cinderella story, a “crime” happens. And that crime is investigated by none other than Red Riding Hood, who basically takes on the role of a mystery-solving detective. In what should be considered one of the most ambitious genre mashups, you get a taste of fairytale and murder mystery in the same place,...

Netflix’s newest adventure comedy out of Japan reimagines two of our favorite fairy tales as a unique detective story. Directed by Yuichi Fukuda and starring Kanna Hashimoto and Yuko Araki in the lead roles, the movie is an entertaining journey featuring all the major plotlines that make a fairy tale, along with a few detective elements. Running for 1 hour and 47 minutes, Once Upon a Crime” will definitely be a fun watch. Here’s a detailed review for you to decide if the movie is for you or not.
What’s The Movie About?

Folks don’t usually associate the horror genre with fighting games, but the popularity of fan-made creations like TerrorDrome and the success of horror-based licensed characters in titles like Mortal Kombat prove that there is a market for this kind of hybrid experience. In fact, at one point there was a popular series of games that capitalized on monster movie thrills when coming up with its roster of supernatural fighters in what can basically summed up as a goth rendition of Street Fighter.
Naturally, I’m referring to Capcom’s Darkstalkers (also known as Vampire in Japan), a collection of arcade fighting games that were all the rage back in the 90s but slowly faded into obscurity as the pubic became enamored with three-dimensional action. And as other fighting franchises continue to expand their aging legacy well into the 2020s, I thought that this might be the perfect time to...

Goodbye, angels.
“The Idol” — or at least its first season — came to a conclusion after five episodes on Sunday night, but not without the usual dose of darkly sexual ups and downs for its jewel-eyed, rat-tailed stars.
Titled “Jocelyn Forever,” the episode begins with Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) at her home, working on a song with prolific hip-hop producer Mike Dean (played by himself). As she sings lyrics Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye) prompted her to write — “My kinda love / Force me, choke me ’till I pass out” — it becomes clear that the ex-pimp’s coke habit has caught up to him. Sweating, with his hair beginning to fall out of his famous rat-tail, he interrupts the jam session to give some notes. Jocelyn lets him know he isn’t welcome to do that anymore.

Note: This story contains spoilers from the “The Idol” episode 5.
“The Idol” finale is finally here and the HBO drama held onto its title as the most scandalous show of the summer until the very end.
Episode 4 of the Sam Levinson-created show left off with a grim outlook for Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) after the pop star gave her backup dancer and so-called friend Dyanne (Jennie Kim) the green light to take Jocelyn’s song, “World Class Sinner,” as her own. If her carefully planned comeback getting destroyed wasn’t enough, her personal life was also left in the toilet after learning that Dyanne and Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye) previously knew each other and had a relationship before Jocelyn and Tedros met.
Seeking revenge, Jocelyn called up her ex-boyfriend, Rob, to come to her house, who succeeded in making Tedros jealous. Jocelyn’s plan backfired, of course, when Tedros...

The idea of retelling placid and gentle children's fairy tales in a bloody, horror milieu is hardly new. Think of a fairy tale or beloved children's classic, and odds are good that someone has already transformed it into a horror movie. Off the top of my head: Neil Jordan made a horror movie out of Little Red Riding Hood with "The Company of Wolves" in 1984. Later, in 1996, filmmaker Matthew Bright brought the same story into a scuzzy modern setting with "Freeway." 1997 saw the release of "Snow White: A Tale of Terror" with Sigourney Weaver as the evil queen.
"The Little Mermaid" was transformed into an awesome 2015 horror musical called "The Lure." Pinocchio starred in "Pinocchio's Revenge." The Gingerbread Man was transformed into "The Gingerdead Man". A quick stroll through the spider-webbed hallways of Tubi might reveal titles like "The Curse of Sleeping Beauty," 1995's "Rumplestiltskin," and multiple films called "The Tooth Fairy.

‘Our budget was tiny. The forest was 12 trees on rollers – and for long shots we used bonsai. The crew had worked on Star Wars and thought we were absurd’
I met Angela Carter in 1982, while we were in Dublin attending a week celebrating the centenary of James Joyce’s birth. She’d written a script based on a short story of hers called The Company of Wolves, itself an adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood. It wasn’t long enough for a feature film but I proposed a kind of portmanteau structure, with a girl dreaming herself as a fairytale character and her dream grandmother telling cautionary tales. In that way, we could incorporate elements from other traditional tales in Angela’s collection The Bloody Chamber.

We have three (3) Blu-ray copies available for a giveaway of the upcoming horror film Hunted which Rlje Films will release on DVD and Blu-ray on May 18th. What started as a flirtatious encounter at a bar turns into a life-or-death struggle as Eve becomes the unknowing target of a misogynistic plot against her. Forced to flee as two men pursue her through the forest, she’s pushed to her extremes while fighting to survive—but survival isn’t enough for Eve. She will have revenge. A modern and radical take on the Little Red Riding Hood fable, Hunted is an exhilarating, transcendent, and frequently brutal survival tale that elevates itself with the power of myth and magic, while still holding an exacting mirror to present-day society. ...

After reading Heather's recent 4/5 review for The Wolf of Show Hollow, I can't wait to check it out this weekend and we're excited to share with Daily Dead readers and exclusive track from the movie's soundtrack! Also due out on October 9th, the 20-track release was composed by Ben Lovett and will be available courtesy of Lakeshore Records:
Lakeshore Records is set to release The Wolf of Snow Hollow—Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on October 9. Composed by Ben Lovett, the album is a strikingly orchestrated, multi-faceted work inspired by old school Bernard Herrmann-era suspense thrillers reflecting all the dimensions of the offbeat horror film—from darkly comedic to tension-fueled terror to oddball mystery caper. The album includes the newly reimagined cover version of “Little Red Riding Hood” originally performed by Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs in 1966, and given a seductive and thoroughly haunting treatment by Lovett and indie artist Valen.

Former Originals star Danielle Campbell returns to The CW tonight (9/8c) with the network premiere of Tell Me a Story, which finds the former TV witch falling under someone else’s spell for a change.
Though Tell Me a Story already enjoyed a two-season lifespan on CBS All Access, Campbell says it makes “perfect sense” for The CW to give its viewers a chance to experience the “thrilling, sexy, mysterious” anthology series for the first time. It certainly doesn’t hurt that the fairytale-themed drama comes from the mind of Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries) and co-stars Paul Wesley, the...

The legend of Sweeney Todd lives on in Asian cinema. From an Indian slum Little Red Riding Hood spin-off to an expose of a Hong Kong-based serial killer, directors all across Asia have wrestled with cutting-edge attempts at filming a subject as old as civilization itself: butchery. We’ve collected here some of the most notable films on the subject. Some are grimy, some are gruesome, and yet some are simply gory; the meat of the matter is though, almost all of these films wield a sharp political edge layered underneath all the bone and gristle. Take caution as you peruse this sensational list. You may never see your pork bun the same way ever again. And btw, the +1 refers to “Untold Story”, a film that is about butchering, but on a whole different level.

The CW has acquired four series for broadcast and streaming: DC Universe’s “Swamp Thing” and CBS All Access’ “Tell Me a Story” will be making their network TV debuts on The CW, while foreign shows “Coroner” and “Dead Pixels” will be making their first stateside appearance.
Premiere dates for all four shows will be announced at a later date.
The horror-tinged “Swamp Thing” centered on the titular DC superhero, while the psychological thriller “Tell Me a Story” anthology series took classic fairy tales, such as “The Three Little Pigs” and “Little Red Riding Hood,” and reimagined them with dark, twisted spins.
The hourlong Canadian “Coroner” drama, which originally began airing on CBC last year, centers on Dr. Jenny Cooper (Serinda Swan), a recently widowed, newly appointed coroner who investigates any suspicious, unnatural, or sudden deaths in Toronto. CBS All Access is closing the book on Tell Me a Story.
The Paul Wesley and Danielle Campbell-led anthology series has been canceled after two seasons.
The news is somewhat surprising given that it generated a decent amount of buzz for a show on one of the less popular streaming services.
While CBS All Access will not be ordering a third season, the first two seasons are headed to The CW in a deal that will bring more eyes to the series.
But it may be too late, given that the streamer has canceled it.
The beauty of anthology series is that they have a beginning, middle, and end every season, so fans will not be left in the lurch with several questions unanswered.
Tell Me a Story Season 1 will either be used to bolster the network's summer or fall slate, given the increased reliance on acquisitions.

With many broadcast shows in disarray as a result of the coronavirus production shutdown, a trend is emerging of networks turning to streamers and international waters for content to fill their schedule.
Only hours after Fox announced it will air season 1 of the Spectrum series “L.A.’s Finest” this fall, the CW has gone three better by acquiring the broadcast rights to four different series, among them “Swamp Thing” from DC Universe and “Tell Me a Story” from CBS All Access.
In additional news, the Kevin Williamson-created anthology thriller has been canceled by All Access, Variety has confirmed, meaning that the show will end at two seasons, both of which will be heading to CW for a second-window run and will remain available to stream on All Access.
The other two shows that CW has picked up are “Coroner” (two seasons) and “Dead Pixels” (one season), which hail from Canada and the U.

Kevin Williamson won’t be spinning a third season of Tell Me a Story on CBS All Access. The streamer has canceled the fairytale-themed anthology thriller after just two seasons, TVLine has confirmed.

Kevin Williamson’s horror anthology series Tell Me a Story will not return to CBS All Access for a third installment. The two existing seasons of the show, from Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, have been acquired by the CW. This will mark the TV network debut of Tell Me a Story. It also will mark the return to the CW for The Vampire Diaries co-creator/executive producer Williamson and star Paul Wesley who stars in both seasons of the CBS All Access series, as does Danielle Campbell of The Vampire Diaries spinoff The Originals.

Taron Egerton, star of Kingsman but not The King’s Man (that’s going to get confusing), has been dropped into the Batman universe by Instagram artist @Mizuriofficial. In the piece below, the actor is cast as Red Hood, a comic book character with a complicated backstory.
As Mizuri alludes to, Egerton has already played Robin Hood in a 2018 flop of the same name. I’m assuming that’s where the idea for this poster originated, and if a Red Hood movie ever made it to theaters, one would hope for better prospects than the dud it almost shares a name with.
Am I the only one who thinks of Little Red Riding Hood when hearing the words Red Hood, though? Now, that would be a very different movie. Given how chic it is to recast classic film characters with flipped genders, why not sanction a modern retelling of the Red Riding Hood story,...

Acting challenges can either be hit or miss. Depending on the script, it could be hilarious or a hot mess. And, a bad part can spell disaster, regardless of what's being done to save it.
On RuPaul's Drag Race Season 12 Episode 5, the parody of Grey's Anatomy brought back all the iconic tropes you've come to expect from an acting challenge.
Missed lines, some queens shining bright, and others suffering under bad roles. But did the scene come to life or did it flatline?
Before we dive deep into the challenge, we need to talk about Brita and Aiden Zhane. Why does Brita keep bashing Aiden at every turn?
Sure, Aiden is a weaker queen compared to the others, and she should have landed herself in the bottom two for RuPaul's Drag Race Season 12 Episode 4. However, everything Aiden does is so tightly scrutinized by Brita at every chance.

Diana Serra Cary, the child silent film star known by the nickname Baby Peggy, died on Monday in Gustine, Calif. She was 101.
Born on October 29, 1918 as Peggy Jean Montgomery, Cary began her career in the film industry at the early age of 19 months. During a visit with her mother and a friend to Century Film Studio in Hollywood, director Fred Fishbach became impressed with Peggy’s well-mannered behavior that led to her co-starring in short films. She soon began starring in her own series of films, becoming a major Hollywood celebrity and appearing in more than 100 shorts. She starred in a short film as Little Red Riding Hood in 1922 and in Hansel and Gretel in 1923. She starred in five feature-length films including “Captain January” in 1924 that was later remade as a musical starring Shirley Temple.
Her father, Jack Montgomery, was a cowboy who worked as a stuntman and an extra in cowboy films.

New editions of The Lunar Chronicles has author Marissa Meyer looking back on inventive cosplay and forward to new fairy tale retellings.
Upon glimpsing the dynamic covers for the new paperback editions of Marissa Meyer’s reimagined fairy tale series The Lunar Chronicles, one can’t help but notice there’s something familiar about them—especially the gorgeous stepbacks that feature Cinder in a ballgown and Cress staring wistfully in the opposite direction of the strapping Thorne, silhouetted by moonlight. They bring to mind… Sailor Moon.
Meyer laughs when this comparison is brought up, considering her background as a Sailor Moon fanfiction writer, but says that it was not intentional: “I think that’s just Tomer [Hanuka]’s style.” However, when her publisher Macmillan sent along the artist’s portfolio, she was certainly struck by Hanuka’s work.

Wes Anderson seems to love talking animals. So much so that he has made not one, but two, stop-motion movies starring verbal animals: first, “The Fantastic Mr. Fox,” which featured the voice of George Clooney in the title role, followed by the endlessly eccentric “Isle of Dogs.” This delightful outing opens with a card that reads, “All barks have been rendered into English,” and sure enough, Anderson assembled many of his favorite actors — Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Jeff Goldblum, Tilda Swinton — to do the honors.
That decision has since inspired many a think piece, in which critics questioned the politics of Anderson’s choices. It’s a valid debate, but I’d prefer to tackle another question: Namely, why do we accept talking dogs in the first place?
The earliest example I can find in Western civilization dates back to “Don Quixote” author Miguel de Cervantes, who penned a novella...

Tell Me a Story Season 1 launched back in October to mixed reviews. It has a 54 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

John and Matthew are watching every single live-action film starring Meryl Streep.
#48 —The Witch, a witch.
John: In his reserved review of the original 1987 Broadway production of Into the Woods, Frank Rich summed up the plot of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s beloved musical as such: “Cinderella and company travel into a dark, enchanted wilderness to discover who they are and how they might grow up and overcome the eternal, terrifying plight of being alone.” Rich noted that, “in remaking Grimm stories, Mr. Sondheim's lyrics and Mr. Lapine's book tap into the psychological mother lode from which so much of life and literature spring.” Sondheim and Lapine’s dextrous, intertwined reimagining of classic Grimm fairy tales, from Little Red Riding Hood to Cinderella, offers a subversively adult version of these hallowed childhood fables and an artistic vision that seems fundamentally at odds with family-friendly Disney, the machine behind Rob Marshall’s 2014 screen translation.
