An homage to films including Hellraiser, The Thing, Alien, and The Exorcist, upcoming horror movie Thorns is said to be “ripe with physical makeup effects and plenty of gore,” both of which have been on full display in all the imagery we’ve seen so far. Bloody Disgusting has now been provided with several more first-look images, exclusively being shared below.
From director Douglas Schulze (The Dark Below, Hellmaster, Mimesis), Thorns features horror icon Doug Bradley (Hellraiser), said to be playing a “mysterious archbishop.”
Check out the gallery below to see Bradley and more sights from the film.
In Thorns, “An ex-priest working for NASA is sent to investigate a remote observatory that went silent after receiving a mysterious radio signal from deep space. Upon arrival, he discovers the signal has opened a portal unleashing a thorned monster. The former priest must now summon his lost faith to stop the...

Coming soon from filmmaker Douglas Schulze (The Dark Below, Hellmaster, Mimesis), Thorns immediately caught our attention last year, and Fangoria now shares some fresh imagery.
Schulze tells Fangoria, “The intention was to make a ‘monster’ movie as a kind of homage to the great horror cinema of the ’70s and ’80s. John Carpenter’s The Thing, Ridley Scott’s Alien, William Friedkin’s The Exorcist and, of course, Clive Barker’s Hellraiser were all inspiring.”
On that note, horror icon Doug Bradley (Hellraiser) makes an appearance in Thorns, and these new images give us our first look at Bradley’s character, a “mysterious archbishop.”

In 2012, Anchor Bay released Mimesis: Night of the Living Dead. Directed by Douglas Schulze (The Dark Below), the film followed horror fans that find themselves in the middle of George Romero's Night of the Living Dead, and now we have word that Mimesis will continue next year in Mimesis: Nosferatu.
Set a few years after the original film, the sequel takes place at a private school, where students are adapting a stage version of Nosferatu that begins to take on a life of its own. Allen Maldonado, from the original Mimesis, returns in what's described as a Van Helsing-like role, and he's joined by Lance Henriksen.
In terms of when you can see the movie, I'm told that the plan is to have the film hit the festival circuit, which will be followed by a worldwide release sometime in 2019. Take a look at the official trailer and poster below, and...

Rachel (Lauren Mae Shafer) is on the run from a serial killer (David G.B. Brown). I say run, I mean swim. She was drugged, dressed in scuba gear and then plunged in to the depths of a nearby frozen lake to drown. Unfortunately for the killer however, Rachel is something of a seasoned diver and won’t go down (or should that be sank?) without a fight. With her killer stalking her on the surface, Rachel must not only constantly outwit him, but also survive the freezing temperatures as well as literally keeping a float.
Now before you call me a cop out regarding my somewhat brief synopsis,...

The premise that director Douglas Schulze and co-writer Jonathan D’Ambrosio have cooked up for their film The Dark Below is a bold one. This 75-minute thriller is dialogue-free, save one line at the start setting everything in motion, the story instead unfolding as a series of expressions through current duress and visually informative flashbacks while David Bateman‘s energetic score blasts you into the correct state of unease. Performances must be a bit over-the-top, with sight and sound bordering on manipulative, in order for it all to work, but we hope the result will be good enough to forgive any moments where these inevitabilities go awry. And for a time it is, our intrigue at what’s happening initially getting the better of disbelief. Sadly, that time is too short.
Kudos to the filmmakers for throwing us into the fire with frame one, though. I was genuinely interested because...

And if you're into box office and how movies might do, come play some of the box office games at EZ1 Productions including their new Pick 5 game!
This Past Weekend:
As expected, Legendary Pictures’ Kong: Skull Island won the weekend, and honestly, the Weekend Warrior’s original prediction of $61.6 million was pretty darn close to the movie’s opening weekend which ended up at $61 million. (Unfortunately, I chickened out on Thursday because my prediction was so much higher than all others and lowered it to $58 million, which was Still closer to than every other prediction last weekend.) Also, as expected (at least by me), Hugh Jackman’s Logan took a 2nd weekend tumble as has been the case with most X-Men movies,...

Pedestrian execution undercuts the high concept of Douglas Schulze's near-silent horror film about a young woman trapped in a freezing lake by a determined killer. While its intriguing setup sounds like it could make for a provocative and original thriller, The Dark Below never lives up to its promise, although it earns points for originality.
The story begins with Rachel (Lauren Mae Shafer) — at least that's her name as provided in the credits — being attacked by a burly man (David G.B. Brown) who strangles her, forces a drug down her throat and puts her in a wet suit....

Not to be confused with another horror film of the same name currently in production, This Dark Below is not a H.P. Lovecraft inspired film, but rather a great looking thriller in the vein of Buried.
In the film directed by Douglas Schulze, a kidnapper traps Rachel, a young woman in a wetsuit, and holds her prisoner under the ice of a frozen lake. Sounds chilling doesn't it? Get it?
Official Write-up:
The Dark Below is Douglas Schulze's (Dark Fields) new stunt, while waiting to shoot the sequel of his clever Mimesis, he crafts for us a Machiavellian and claustrophobic thriller in line with Buried. Shot in a natural setting in the heart of winter around (and mostly in) Michigan's Great Lake, with an economy of speech who leaves us with a constant tension, the film can re [Continued ...]...

Here's a new kind of chiller, for real. The Dark Below, which screened for the first time ever at Fantasia 2015, features a woman trapped in a frozen lake for nearly the whole length of the film. It was shot in sub-zero temperatures, and as someone who can't stand that kind of cold, I find it amazing that anyone would agree to work on the film in the first place. That also means that the entire premise is that much more horrific.Directed by Douglas Schulze, who co-wrote with Jonathan D'Ambrosio, The Dark Below takes its time unfolding the narrative in clever ways. Rachel (Lauren Mae Shafer in a relentlessly physical performance) is a woman who's been choked and drugged by Ben (David G.B. Brown), then...

Since I’m not much of a winter guy, any horror movie involving copious amounts of ice and freezing temperatures sounds like a terrifying time, and that’s before any crazed Yetis or other murderous demons threaten to turn the pure, white snow a deeper shade of red. Add into that scenario the thought of being trapped underwater, which happens to be my biggest fear, and you’ve stumbled into one of my recurring nightmares – a nightmare that director Doug Schulze is bringing to life in his next film, The Dark Below.
According to the very first press release, The Dark Below is a chilly, submerged “survival thriller set mostly beneath a frozen lake as a diver tries to stay alive while a killer lurks above.” Starring Veronica Cartwright (Alien, Witches of Eastwick) and Lauren Shafer (Mimesis), the film was shot in the dead of winter at Michigan’s Great Lakes,...
