I couldn't agree more with this excellent review. As Ruchika Bhat writes:
"...the show has a really subtle approach of storytelling, hidden in the visual style of the show, which gives off typical rom-com vibes. . .
You know, if I had to call a series feminist, this is how it would look. No, there's no message of equality underneath the fun premise; it is simply a show about women, showing us their many struggles and how they're capable of fixing their own problems themselves. And it definitely feels like it's made by women for women, which is why I think it fits the bill perfectly. In Tuiskoms, Fleur is struggling with the grief of losing her husband, the love of her life, and she doesn't know how to move on from him. Her mother, Abigail, is struggling to deal with a broken marriage, and Fleur's teen daughter, Kelly, has to deal with trying to start a new life in a remote town with a broke mom. These women are most definitely not defined by their struggles; in fact, what connects the three generations is their flair for art, all in their own right. This might have been my favorite part of the show."

I'm so tired of female characters clearly written by men. All the women in this series are permanently hysterical, overreacting in all situations. Not even their fantasies are believable. Further more, the teenagers don't act at all like teenagers and lack the awkwardness that comes with that age. And in contrast, the men are all fairly calm and rational, living their best, handsome lives.
And as much as this is lighthearted fluff that you can put on in the background, the cliche dialogue makes me roll my eyes so much it could be considered a workout.
Disappointed in the female director too.
Be better!

Tuiskoms Season 1 is the kind of series that sneaks up on you and stays with you long after the credits roll. Anchored by a raw, emotionally honest performance from its lead Fleur, who returns to her hometown with her daughter after a major loss-trying to start over and find some peace. It's quiet, emotional, and really pulls you in with its honesty and beautiful setting. I found myself totally absorbed by the story and the characters. Nothing over-the-top-just real, raw, and deeply moving.
If you enjoy slow, thoughtful dramas that actually make you feel something, give this one a try. So proud to see this kind of quality South African storytelling. 💔✨

So basically I couldn't buy that the young mother had that old of a daughter, so I checked the cast and they r only 10 years of a difference. However the "daughter" looks ten times older than the "mom". It made the whole series terrible to watch. The actress for the "'mom" is 40 while the "daughter" is 29 going on 30. It looked so odd and off bc I thought except for the outfit it had to be the other way around so I checked the cast.... LMAOOOOO. Ruined everything for me. They should have made them sisters and maybe even switched the roles and had the daughter as the older sister! It really did make everything that awful. Casting gets an f.

It was another hit and a huge miss for SA production. Do the director and producers not watch good TV?
The dialogue let down the majority of this story. Predictable and one-dimensional. Felt as if it was written by a robot that was taught how to "write drama", badly.
The costume design for the teenagers was something from some old 2000s Disney show. No one dresses like that!
Poor directive skills resulted in terrible acting. Thank God for Flure, the only decent character that carried everyone that had a scene with her.
Nothing original about this. Directors should take advice from the Comic Book lady.

My husband and I just finished this series and we absolutely loved it!
We were blown away by the incredible actors, production and beautiful setting. It made us so proud to be South African that something of this caliber was made here.
We laughed, we cried, we reflected. I love that this was woman led and focused on real issues and relationships. Great character development. The parents were hilarious and such unexpected wisdom from "Skouers" lol.
So grateful to have access to this through Netflix. Please make more series like this, pretty please! Highly recommend, it appeals to a wide audience.
