Maybe I am a fossil, but I don't think it's a good movie

If Sonic is an 8 this is barely a 4. 5 if I am being generous. It's clear that many 15 year olds enjoy the movie because of the social aspect and the memes and game references, but those alone do not support a good movie.

The visuals are actually really good, but ultimately the story is possibly one of the most cringe-worthy media i have ever consumed. She hulk looks like Oppenheimer compared to this. There is comedy, and then there is farce, and this one is much closer to farce than actual comedy.

I think one thing Sonic movie did a lot lot better than the minecraft movie is that while it makes a lot of game references and also juvenile humor, ultimately it tries to tell a coherent story with structure. Same wth Mario movie. Meanwhile, this movie feels extremely lacking in actually trying to tell a story that makes sense in itself. The acting didn't really help either, I can see Jack Black and Jason Momoa really trying, but quite frankly I didn't really enjoy their characters a lot.

I had hoped that it would be good

It felt kind of... sad to be at the theater today, because I really wished this movie would surprise me. It didn't.

Yeah... some parts of the movie look good - mostly the actual Minecraft world. The blocks, the mobs, the environment - they nailed that. But the second real people show up? Total cringe. It looks like a TikTok filter with a budget. Jack Black as Steve feels more like an annoying tutorial NPC walking you through a game you've been playing for a decade.

The story barely exists. A couple of humans somehow end up in Minecraft, then there's some fighting, singing, running around - and you're sitting there wondering: why? For what? It feels more like a weak YouTube recap of the game than an actual movie.

I was really hoping it'd at least be funny or charming - but I almost fell asleep.

Jack Black and Jason Momoa really tried, I'll give them that. You can tell they weren't phoning it in. But it's just not enough. It's not entertaining. Not for adults. Not for anyone who wants more than "Hey, I know that from the game!"

Maybe it's okay for little kids. Maybe hardcore Minecraft fans will enjoy pointing at the screen every time something looks familiar. But for a theater experience? Save your money. Seriously...

This is all you'll ever get

Video game movies aren't ever going to get better. I think this is abundantly clear from the way audiences vote with their wallet -- and continue to defend even the dumbest, laziest, most formulated slop on the grounds that it happens to remind them of other products that they like.

When I reviewed The Super Mario Bros. Movie, my criticisms were fairly mild; even as I filed it as a negative review, I was ultimately pleased with how sincere it came off at times. Yet, this was enough for net objections from fanboys who explained to me all the references I didn't get (those always make a movie better) and branded me a biased film critic who hates gaming.

I let it slide because I didn't think the Mario film was that bad -- I find it perfectly "defensible". But when I saw a similar level of defensiveness over the atrocious Five Nights and Freddy's and now A Minecraft Movie, I realized that we may not be seeing any betterment in the much-maligned category of "video game adaptations" any time soon. (The only game movies that spring to mind where the Audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is as rotten as the Critic Score are Borderlands and The Angry Birds Movie, and even then, the audience scores aren't abysmal.) No matter how bad something is, gamers will largely be pleased, accusing critics of holding a bias toward video games and the movies they inspire.

Funnily enough, video game adaptations seem to do more than fine, review-wise, in episodic TV form. The ratings for things like Arcane, Fallout, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and The Last of Us speak a plain language -- and also utterly shred the idea that the movies get panned purely because critics have it out for your little computer games. What have the people involved with streaming-site shows figured out that big-studio filmmakers have not? And why do audiences not seem to want them to?

I wasn't really planning on joining in on the Minecraft Movie discourse. I care very little about video games to begin with, and my only relationship with this one is that my baby brother was hellbent on playing it on the computer I always wanted/needed to use for other things (I can't remember what) when I was younger, so you can imagine why a film based on this particular game didn't exactly tickle my fancy. On paper, I shouldn't give a single sh* t, yet morbid curiosity -- brought on by the sheer volume of flabbergasted reviews and just as flabbergasted accounts of what it's like to see this film in a theater full of people -- got the better of me once again. And as it turns out, the movie wasn't as bad as I feared. It isn't good, no, but... there's something to it some of the time:

The film is a fairly standard adventure, albeit one that sometimes suggests the same "We don't care how silly this is" attitude as the Barbie movie -- a film that succeeds at being self-aware without being self-conscious. By and large, however, they treat its source material with the same irony and cynicism that's become commonplace in pop culture. There are also moments when they don't seem to know why, exactly, the silly things are silly. This film contains words like "unalive" and "chungus" -- something tells me the writers believed, correctly, that movie-goers would laugh at that, just not for the reasons they did laugh.

We get Jack Black saying "I am Steve", name-dropping the word "Minecraft" (it's an IRL "Morbin' time"), and several other meme moments that reportedly inspired uproarious applause and shouting at more crowded screenings than the one in my CamRip. To Black's credit, he seems to be having a hoot at every turn. I shall also admit that the idea for the CG designs is an interesting one, although the result doesn't always look especially pleasant.

I should note that not everyone in the Minecraft fandom is forgiving towards the film. Apparently there are several offensive errors in terms of how things are designed and constructed (I've heard one kid explain that our heroes also learn how to build "unrealistically" fast), and the power levels of the Enderman character are inaccurate, I guess. Regardless, it obviously makes sense that this film would be a mega-hit; I don't think it's fair, as some Film Twitter-ers seem to do, to pin the box office numbers on those who swear by this film as a new so-bad-it's-good masterpiece and go see it as a joke. (I, too, would've preferred if they had turned it into another Morbius scenario but it's too late for any of that.)

I do think it knows what it's doing -- what it is -- more than the "so bad it's good" label suggests, but much of it is indeed laughable rather than funny; to be laughed AT rather than WITH. Do as you please with this movie. If you need me, I'll be hyping the new Last of Us season.

Those who thought 10/10 have poor taste in movies

How can anyone say this movie is even close to 10/10? And best movie ever? Seriously? Your taste in movies is terrible and your way too easy to please. I can and millions of people can name at least 10,000 movies that are 10x better than this cash grab! You seriously need to look at yourself in the mirror and rethink your taste in movies if you actually believe this was a great movie! Far far from it, there won't be any Oscar nominations for this trash.

Even if it's just to watch because you like to play MineCraft is one thing but to declare it the best movie ever, is laughable, sad and problematic.

Dragged on for far too long.

The only saving grace is my boys loved it. The laughed at a lot of scenes I found daft. The special effects were good. It looked like the human characters were actually part of the Minecraft world.

However, I was so darn bored I was sat scrolling my phone through most of it. It dragged and dragged. I almost walked out.

I think I laughed twice but that was mostly out of the ridiculousness of what I was watching.

The very predictable basic story barely held together. Some of it was so cringey I wasn't to be sick!

Thank goodness I got my ticket for free via the meerkats. It really wasn't worth it.

Goofy Video Game Adaption meant for kids

A Minecraft Movie is the cinematic adaptation of the hit blocky sandbox, Minecraft. A Minecraft Movie follows four people who are sucked into the world of Minecraft and must team together with Steve to defeat an evil threat. The movie is silly and ham the entire time. Jason Momoa and Jack Black battle on how can be the most ham in every scene. The rest of the cast is fine but are kinda there. Especially the two female characters who have zero personality and are out for half of the movie. This movie is purely for the gen Alpha boys. In our screening, there was apparently a lot of Minecraft references because the kids would lose it during those moments. The story is barely passable. There is a truck load of exposition dump for the first half of the movie. There is also a couple of other questionable story beats during the movie. There is a side plot with a Villager that is random and could have been cut but had at least a funny payoff. The comedy was hit and miss. The CGI was actually fine and you get use to it pretty quickly. Only had a couple of moments of obvious green screen. This movie is for a very particular audience and if you are in that audience, you will love it. If you are not in that particular audience, you will either hate this movie or find it too goofy. I'm in the middle to be honest. I ended up enjoying the goofiness eventually but I wouldn't watch it again.

Not the target demo

I'm not the target demo here, so I can't be too harsh on it and have to take that into account... but, yeeesh.

Decided to go see this on a whim on a Saturday matinee. My partner is a Minecraft player, so I'm very familiar with the game and appreciated that part of the movie. But, visually this movie was rough. Acting wasn't great and overall it just felt weird and off. Like I was watching a feature length commercial or something. Just didn't feel like a movie.

I can see kids enjoying it, so that's good because they're the target and won't care too much about the extraneous details. I just think we should set the bar a little higher?

Overall just kinda fine, but below average.

Boring

We went hoping for a fun, entertaining experience, but it just didn't deliver. There was nothing particularly funny or engaging, and the atmosphere felt underwhelming. While it wasn't terrible, it was very average and didn't live up to expectations. Considering the time, effort, and money it took to go, it simply wasn't worth it. Disappointing overall. Would not recommend for people who are going to have fun, but for families it is okay I guess, but still it is not worth even £5 tickets and a £3 in sweets. The whole experience did not live up to the whole ambeince before hand did not live up to it.

Defending this movie because it's a 'kids movie' is not a valid defense

Only thing that this argument defends is the plot. Obviously plots aren't supposed to be too complex for a kids movie and I'm happy to look past that. But I've seen movies that are made for kids that are also incredibly good stories (puss in boots for example). This movie has probably the most corny and generic writing I've ever seen, literally saying "hey viewer, this is a character and here's his backstory and motivations." Henry pissed me off so much I was praying on his downfall. Only gave it 4 stars because chicken jockey flint and steel, the nether and Jason mamoa. I love Jack black and I love how much fun he had with the character but the writing for him was so bad it's not even funny. Also none of the jokes were very funny but I'm happy to look past it due to it being made for kids.

Go for the Theater Experience if You Want a Good Bad Time

Enjoyably bad for all the right reasons if you watch it with the right crowd. As long as you're at least somewhat familiar with the games (Lord help those who have no idea what's going on in this movie). The visuals are a mixed bag since the sets look surprisingly great, but the realistic textures of the creatures look horrifyingly uncanny and the integration of the live action characters is hilariously bad. Jack Black is just playing himself, but is also the source of most of the memes that made every Zoomer teenager in the audience go wild. Which is easily the best part, the enthusiastic teenage audience participation cheering and hollering at any of the meme-worthy lines from the trailers (lord help those clean-up crews). The Pig Sorceress villain was entertaining, and I enjoyed all of the references to the game (even if most of them are just random things Jack Black announces as he's using them). There are a million things to pick apart from the movie. It's straight up bad. But it's enjoyably bad and I was never bored or irritated. I'd love a legit great adaptation someday, but for now I'll settle for the unintentional laughs.

Scraping the bedrock.

Again, I feel that I've come up against the "This is not really for me" problem, I have when heading to the cinema. I am a gamer, but I'm also in my forties, so "Minecraft" in general, has not been something that I've bothered with. It's not "Snow White" bad, but it's not far off.

Garett Garrison (Jason Momoa), Dawn (Danielle Brooks), Natalie (Emma Myers) and her brother Henry (Sebastian Hansen) are drawn into another universe via a portal, created when they combine two otherworldly items together. They're drawn into the Overworld, where gathering materials and building anything is limited only by your imagination. The only other human in this world is Steve (Jack Black) who was previously captured by Malgosha (Rachel House), Piglin ruler of a dark variant of the Overworld, known as the Nether.

Most of the time, I think I found the film annoying. It's very much at "look, here's the thing from the game" sort of film though I have to say, I praise the "Fallout" TV show for using the assets for the game for a show unrelated to the plot of them, so I'm not sure I can criticise "Minecraft" here for doing the same things. I found Jack Black to be particularly annoying this time. Sure, he always plays Jack Black and does so again here, shouting and pronouncing words strangely but it's not in service of much here and beyond explaining a few things I don't think he needs to be in this as much as he is. The plot is somehow both convoluted and basic.

But there are a couple of minor graces that elevate above "Snow White" in the worst film of the year race. Principle amongst them is Jason Momoa, who I think is legitimately funny. I also liked Jennifer Coolidge's character, who goes on a date with a villager who wanders away from the Overworld.

What does my disliking the film matter though, it was a cultural phenomenon, for a week at least and has made all the money ensuring that "Another Minecraft Movie" is all but inevitable.

Its something

A Minecraft Movie defies reason. It's essentially a collection of recognisable iconography from the game and memes stitched together by a flimsy plot borrowing from much better movies. The message about not letting the banality of the working world destroy your creativity would feel more genuine if the film didn't end with a standard issue big CGI fight on an empty digital landscape and a sky beam as well. It sets cinema back at least 5 years and would be unwatchable if it wasn't for a game cast.

Jack Black is doing what he does best whilst staying in his lane. His boundless enthusiasm carries this as best it can and he has a strong sexual chemistry with Jason Momoa, who continues to be completely unafraid to look ridiculous and send himself up. Their bromance is easily the best aspect of the film. Sebastian Eugene and Emma Myers are both fine in the thankless roles they're given which force them to play it straighter and go through the most generic arc.

Director Jared Hess surprisingly manages to keep some of that Napoleon Dynamite energy in the earlier moments, giving the film some of its best laughs. Unfortunately, they are few and far between afterwards with a particularly draining running joke involving Jennifer Coolidge dating an extremely uncanny looking villager. The choice to make this live action is woefully misguided and the CGI looks okay until it has to blend the human characters and everything else together which never looks convincing enough.

A new classic for all the wrong reasons

I watched 'A Minecraft Movie' opening day expecting to just turn off my brain and have fun. I got to say, the movie failed to reach even the lowest of expectations, but even still, the audience managed to save the entire experience by their enthusiasm coming from all the memes. There was a lot of cheering and there were multiple people shouting in now iconic lines such as "Chicken Jockey!" and "Flint and Steel!". But from a purely film standpoint, it's a really weak flick.

Now, there isn't a lot that actually works here. The set design and visuals are genuinely mind blowing and hats off to all the people who worked on it. The movie did have some cool nostalgia bait references that did manage to connect with me and I would lie if I said I didn't chuckle a few times during the film.

However, this movie is as basic as you can get when it comes to a clichéd and uninteresting story. There wasn't anything to grasp onto, the characters were all incredibly shallow, unfunny stereotypes and the pacing felt painfully messy. The script is just very weak and has nothing to really offer the viewers. The jokes were mostly quite unfunny and a lot of times genuinely cringe, especially the random Jack Black musical numbers. I understand what kind of message they were going for with the movie and it's a great one, but they really failed the execution and everything just fell flat.

But let's be real here: this movie is not made for people who have grown up with Minecraft, it's for young kids. It's unfair to judge it when in fact, I probably would've lost my mind if I saw this at my young minecrafter age. And if the film makes children happy, then it's worthy of existing. And for us... we'll have to do with the smiles it has given us due to the memes.

Mid movie, great audience!

Your experience of this movie depends on the audience, and I just so happened to have a great one. We clapped at every song and cheered at CHICKEN JOCKEY, but we didn't throw popcorn. Only things I can say about the movie itself is that CGI effects are well done. Everything else, such as the characters, I've already forgotten about. Overall, it's just a kids movie that the guys at Warner Bros didn't put much thought in. I would've preferred if Mojang and Warner Bros made it animated. If that was the case, people would've actually liked this movie. But, Warner Bros hates fully animated things now.

Bad, but worth watching.

This film has many issues, but it's still at least enjoyable. If you're just a casual movie watcher, you'll definitely love it. Plenty of memeable moments and some decent humor. However, if you're more of a film connoisseur, you'll likely find "A Minecraft Movie" to be a dull experience.

Don't get me wrong, the film has its moments. The scene at the end with Steve and the big bad was genuinely pretty cool, and the set design was stellar. However, the rest of the movie leaves much to be desired.

The writing for the characters was rather poor. "Show, don't tell" is pretty much thrown out the window. The film feels the need to have Steve explain everything rather than letting the characters experience things organically.

Speaking of Steve and the other characters, they have quite a big problem too. The film doesn't properly develop the female characters, likely due to their lack of screentime. More often than not, they're just sitting in the background reacting during important events rather than actually contributing to the plot. Additionally, the characters that do get development feel like they're constantly competing for plot relevance. It might have been better if there was a smaller main cast, but that's just my opinion.

A squandered opportunity.

A good kid's film reaches more than its intended audience. This means making the motion picture just as accessible to parents and adults as the target demographic. With "A Minecraft Movie" the Hollywood analysts, activists, and A. I. recommendations strike out again! We're living in an age of stereotyping, generalizing and hedging bets. Having seemingly learned nothing from past flops such as 1993's Super Mario Bros. Or 2024's Borderlands, Warner Bros. Makes all the wrong choices, and very few good ones, in this homage to the deeply beloved Minecraft computer game.

In the face of political upheaval, economic turmoil and a massive culture war, the film industry prefers to play it safe rather than attempt any creativity or independent thought. Minecraft is an intricate sandbox game with many details only its fandom is aware of. Instead of slowly introducing the general public to its vast and intriguing universe, the producers at Warner Bros. Have opted to completely obscure the franchise behind the massive shadow of Jack Black: an over-the-top entertainer, and one who's inclusion is meant to attract tickets sales. Add Jason Momoa and you have an extremely superficial casting which completely detracts from the intricate franchise which should have taken the spotlight.

Despite employing veteran director Jared Hess (of Napoleon Dynamite fame) and his recognizable art style, "A Minecraft Movie" fails to make good use of the conflict at hand, squandering it in lame exposition, ridiculous pretext, and frustrating circumstance. This film's plot is cringy, its dialogue mundane, and its structure disordered. Much like the first "Sonic the Hedgehog" film, adapting a computer game to the big screen was always going to be a challenge, and in the same vein "A Minecraft Movie" opts to avoid any effort entirely. Gamers will, indeed, find easter eggs to the source material, but these brief references are as deep as the producers are willing to go. The result is a truly wasted opportunity which feels uneasy to franchise fans and the general audience alike.

A Minecraft Movie seems to be aimed primarily at younger viewers and fans of the popular game.

A Minecraft Movie is a live-action film adaptation of the video game of the same name and is directed by Jared Hess, known for Napoleon Dynamite and Gentlemen Broncos.

The story follows Henry (Sebastian Hansen), who, together with his sister Natalie (Emma Myers) and two others, ends up in a strange, cube-shaped world. In this world, with enough imagination, you can build anything - as long as you believe in it. But there is also danger, because every night they are attacked by hostile creatures.

Fortunately, they meet Steve (Jack Black), a survivor who has lived in this world for years. He tries to help the group find a way back home, before the hostile creatures threaten not only the Minecraft world, but also the real world.

The film is mainly entertaining for children and for older viewers who are familiar with Minecraft. They will recognize many elements, from building materials to typical enemies, and can better appreciate the many winks and references to the game. The humor is mainly aimed at a young audience, although there are some nice moments for older viewers.

What is less strong is that the film spends a lot of time in the beginning on the human world to introduce the characters. This part feels slow and can make younger viewers lose interest. Fortunately, the story gains momentum once the characters are in the Minecraft world.

The script feels messy at times, which is not surprising given that six different writers worked on it. As a result, multiple storylines run through each other, which can cause confusion, especially for younger viewers.

Visually, the film is colorful and imaginative, but the special effects and CGI seem to have been made mainly with a young audience in mind. Younger viewers will not dwell on less convincing images, but for adults, the bluescreen effects and fake-looking creatures are more noticeable. In some scenes, these effects are even visible around the actors' hair, which detracts from the believability.

Nevertheless, Sebastian Hansen manages to hold his own as the main character that young viewers can identify with. Emma Myers convincingly plays the older sister who is less at home in the gaming world, but still wants to help her brother.

Jack Black and Jason Momoa appear as typical 'game characters' and older, somewhat worn-out gamers. Both try to be the leader, but ultimately have to work together - although they don't like to admit it. The rest of the cast is less relevant and seems to have been added mainly to fill out the film.

Met my low expectations

I mean, it was exactly what I expected.

Subpar acting, mid CGI, dog water pacing, 1 Dimensional characters, terrible plot, inconsistent with the game.

I will admit, there are some funny moments, some fun moments, and some cool moments, and the film did have a good comedic energy that I enjoyed. It was good that it didn't take itself seriously.

Why was there a subplot with a divorced vice principal and a villager? It added nothing but like... Cmon you gotta admit some of it was at least a bit funny.

I'm just disappointed slightly. This film could have been so much more. It could have been a cool survival horror film with thriller elements, developed characters and beautiful animation. Instead, we got Steve saying "COMING IN HOT".

What else can I say? Oh yeah! Justice for my man Chungus 💔. Best character fr.

38/100 (still better than Venom 3): CHICKEN JOCKEY.

Better than expected

I was expecting this movie to be a 0, but surprisingly it was a 4. It's a tremendous wave of cringe with mediocre actors and jokes for peanuts.

I don't recommend watching it alone, but if you're watching it with friends, be sure to scream every time something silly like "Chicken Jockey" happens.

Jack is your typical childhood icon in this film, a guy who's clearly not cut out to be a leading man but is there because he wants to sing and publicize his career as a musician.

Often this work doesn't follow the logic of the Minecraft video game as it should and instead they put in things that are more like fan-made products than the game's developers.

A real brain-killing machine, but one you can still enjoy if you still have a friend left in the world.

Nope!

I was expecting something with a plot, instead it's a movie for a 5-year-old child, and not even a good one. There are plenty of movies for children done right, and this one isn't one of them. The story seems put together in a rush, the characters are dumb (to be kind), they have no depth at all, they are not funny, and to be honest, I found myself rooting for the pigs more than once. The only reason this movie is in a theater is because "Minecraft" is in the title. I don't think the same story with another title would have even gotten a direct-to-DVD release! I regret wasting the time spent seeing it.
