Not a good B-movie
deloudelouvain8 August 2017
First of all this is a B-movie. Nothing wrong with that because there are tons of good B-movies. Sometimes it's not necessarily a big budget that makes a great movie. There are plenty of examples of good movies made with a tight budget. Uncaged starts promising but the more you get into the story the clearly it gets that this is going to be a waste of your time. Well at least it was for me. The acting isn't great at all, not the worst but not good enough. The storyline gets worse the more the movie progresses. The special effects are close to non-existent, but that I could live with since it is a low budget movie. It's just the bad script that brings this movie down. Don't waste your time on this one.

*** Spoiler Alert ***
steamboatwillie192810 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
For a 'no-budget film', this was actually far better than I was expecting. The acting was good, but not stellar. The premise, while not fresh, was handled well. And for the small budget this film would have had, it was done well. That being said, I have three issues with the film.

The main issue is with the reactions of the characters. Jake has one blackout episode and immediately assumes he is a werewolf. Jake tells his cousin, Brandon, that he is a werewolf and Brandon says "okay' and just takes it at face value. Jake sees his cousin laying on the floor of the garage and covers his crotch before he goes to check on him and keeps it covered the entire time his cousin is dying. Rose asks Jake to kill her husband, Gonzo, and he says sure and just goes with it. Rose watches Jake dispatch Gonzo and his two henchmen and continues over to Jake's house for safety. Jake's uncle invites him to his cabin to see if he has the werewolf gene and then disappears instead of helping the kid. When Turner finds the GoPro case with blood on it, he automatically assumes something nefarious had happened.

If someone blacked out and woke up naked somewhere else, normal people would not automatically assume they are a werewolf. If someone said they were a werewolf, normal people would laugh and take it as a joke until they proved otherwise. If a person woke up to see their cousin laying dead or dying on the floor, the last thing on their mind would be to hide their twigs and berries before rushing to his aide and then keeping them covered while that cousin died. If someone asked a person to kill their spouse, normal people would go to the police or, at the least, bow out and keep their distance from that person. If anyone watched a person change into a werewolf and dispatch three men, the last place they would go to for safety would be the werewolf's house. If the uncle was truly concerned about Jake having the gene, he would have stuck around and helped him out, not left him hanging in the wind. And if Turner was such a great friend, he would look to a nose bleed, a cut on Jake's hand or some such, before going to murderer as an explanation for the blood. Plain and simple, these people do not react the way normal people would react.

The second big issue is with the transformation Jake goes through. The first two times he blacks out, he wakes up completely naked. The final time, he remains in his clothes and they are still on him the next morning, without being ripped up. How do they get ripped to shreds twice and then remain intact the final time?

The final issue is with the side stories in the film. The story lines with Gonzo the drug-dealer, Kyle and Crystal, and Rose's dog, muddle the story instead of adding to it. They could have edited those down or out completely and had a much better film.

Erratically messy and ambitiously quick, one might find only sliver of decency in the piles of inconsistent narrative
quincytheodore5 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
"Uncaged" is not normal by any stretch, from the first act alone it shows hectic cinematography and plot. It stumbles on found footage direction, turns into odd mix of thriller and comedy, then falls straight into corny nudity. The various subplots further hinder the execution with random occurrences. However, there are few surprises like the comic style presentation and better moments on the second half, although it would require patience on audience's part to get that far.

The story starts off confusingly, it's a series of camcorder records of a child then it jumps to three friends taking a trip into the woods, not forgetting the mandatory smooching events. As though that's not jumbled enough it veers with comic book slideshow and down to crime drama shtick. People would appear randomly, bringing needless subplots with them the entire way.

This is encumbered plot to say the least, but the movie has a good direction as it goes on and audience eventually familiarize themselves with the assortment of dubious people. Acting is pretty solid, especially the three friends, they have some awfully strange comedic moments which serendipitously work. The antagonist drug dealer is also ominous in abusive kind of way, if one can tolerate his awkward subplot shoehorned in.

Visual is a true mixed bag, on some occasions it looks bad and jittery as though it wants to replicate mockumentary, but towards the end the graphic is more polished. This is nothing short of big budget and it clearly shows with the editing, still there's a decent effort here and there when the story is properly engaging once it slaps all the fragmented narrative together.

The movie has unexpected shining moments from comedy and horror, but it's chained by incessant oddities which audience, rightfully, might not willing to endure.

Atrocious
darkdaxtervc8 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
There is very little good to say about this movie. None of the characters are likable, and only two characters in this movie can act (nerdy friend and bad guy (albeit over the top at times)). A ton of nonsensical absolutely horrible choices that don't make any sense. The girl's character doesn't even seem real to me. You just happened to fall in with a dangerous drug dealer? Really? And then decided it was a good idea to cheat on him. Really? And then keep the bastard baby even after the adulterer is dead. Really? After he literally just killed your paraplegic dog? (Freaking awesome scene by the way)... Really? And then to ask a complete stranger to kill him for you? How am I supposed to feel bad for this person? To some extent they made intentionally terrible choices. I could see a girl trying to convince a new romantic fling to kill her current lover... But a stranger... At the dinner table? A character that stupid deserves to die at the hands of a hyper-masculine mongoloid who randomly picks up a Southern accent at times. Skip this movie.

What a laughable mess
isaacsundaralingam22 January 2021
(all-excited) "Ha, you killed someone, you killed somebody"
  • "I think I'm a werewolf"
"Oh, but then what happens to your dick? That's the real question..."

This is an actual conversation from the movie... and the movie isn't at all a comedy. That pretty much sums up how comically painful it was to sit through it.

Not worth the time
panther_husky9 August 2016
Are American teenagers really hooked on sex? So bored with films depicting teenagers so hungry for sex. Around 15 minutes or so of teens talking about it which I found to be a waste of time and footage.

Annoying characters which made you cringe though the main protagonist was the best of all actors. He played his character well.

Certain scenes were just laughable and I am not talking about it being comedic. It was just plain stupidity and no thought into what the scenes were trying to represent.

Don't expect anything 1st rate as the whole film was done on a budget. As for originality, well, there were a few scenes which I thought were well done but it wasn't enough to justify the film as being good, scary or entertaining.

Dozen of irritating WTF moments
elfnik4 February 2016
OK, i was so irritated of this movie so I had to write short review. So, first it does not look like a B-category movie on first sight. It has some nice story for beginning, the camera is good and all in all the flow of the movie starts kind of a promising.

So, as the story progress..you just go into it, and then all of a sudden you got totally unconnected story point, then it happens again and again and again..until you lost track of what's going on here. On top of that add dozen of awkward moments that come out of nothing. Totally unexplained moments which just pop in and story progress into some irrelevant direction. The cherry on the top is the awful acting (with 1 honest exception from the guy with the glasses).

So simply put in: The movie looks like bunch different of clips with the same people just stitched together. I'm just giving 2/10 because of the good camera. Waste of time, or you can watch it like a comedy.

most distinguishing feature of this movie is how confusing it is
violetbluegreenred1 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I could literally go on and on about the characters being horrifically written. I want to. But I won't. If you have a deep well of patience, you'll be fine with this movie. If you are not planning to pay attention, you'll be fine with this movie. But otherwise... The characterization is just a huge problem. I have many other nitpicky issues, but this is such a big one that I think that's all that needs to be said (well, this and the major PLOT issues; how is one movie so bad??). Throughout the movie, the characters constantly throw me off with their bizarre behavior--and not in a good way. Barring the characterization, the movie is watchable, but unfortunately, a movie is nothing without its characters.

Enjoyable and funny
normanclinker6 February 2016
OK, so low(ish) budget by Hollywood standards with naturalistic lighting, no constructed sets and some hand held digital camera work - and all the better for that, by the way - but... just fresh and in parts very very funny. (Especially the bit where a gansta proves just how scary he is with a lighter!). I had to write this review having read some negative ones.

Contrary to some you might have read there are no odd plot turns, no moments when you don't know what's going on, and above all the acting is great. I particularly like the relationship between the cousins.

Definitely worth watching if you're a fan of the werewolf genre or just like off-beat, funny movies.

Poor Makeup & Effects
jegd-847-63140723 July 2017
I liked this movie for the most part; The acting was better than most B-movies. The opening scene was really bad and should have been left on the cutting room floor. I noticed a lot of editing scenes in just for filler. I would have enjoyed the movie if the werewolf looked better. This werewolf looked worse than MTV's 'Teen Wolf'. I mean look back 40 years and you'll see scarier creatures than this thing.

A Howling Good Indie Werewolf Movie
MikeHope443 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I bought the DVD on the day of it's release and this is definitely one of the more better werewolf films i've seen as of late. There's a bit of everything suspense, horror, comedy, gore and action.

It's refreshing to see that this particular film doesn't just rely on the beast itself to carry out everything. This is also a story driven film which makes it all the more interesting to watch as everything plays out.

The special effects of the werewolf transformation may not be top notch Hollywood style but as a werewolf movie fan I applaud them for going with practical effects and animatronics it brings out more creativity and get's the actor involved instead of just having CGI do everything.

Definitely a talented cast everyone seemed invested and brought the goods to the table.

Ben Getz (Grotto, Multi-Player) does a wonderful job carrying his first full length film and if you buy the DVD (which I recommend because it comes with a funny blooper reel and audio commentary with the cast and crew) you'll find that not only is he talented but very dedicated to his character as well especially during certain outside scenes. That's something that will definitely work in his favor as an actor and I look forward to seeing more of him in future roles.

Kyle Kirkpatrick, Zack Weiner (was hilarious throughout) and Paulina Singer were strong standouts as well.

You'll find the title of this film is very fitting metaphorically because the beast in Jack himself is "Uncaged" once he reaches a certain age and literally because while Jack gets a cage with the exception of one time he tends to transform before he's securely inside which leads to some interesting things.

All in all i'd give this movie a solid 4 out of 5 stars. It's a decent indie werewolf flick that's not like some of those thriller/horror movies you watch one time then forget about a few weeks later. This one has nice rewatch value that you'll enjoy for many full moons to come.

I thought this was pretty decent
crazybluefrog5 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I watched the movie before reading any of the reviews and I'm not quite sure what others mean when they say the story was all over the place. I followed it without issue and for a low-budget film, I was impressed. The acting was decent, it had some pretty funny moments and the last line was a perfect ending line, "welcome to the family". I really liked that this movie took on a lighter side at times. The makeup and transformation was also done well. I went into this not really expecting much but I was very pleasantly surprised. Great job to cast, director and everyone else in the background that contributed to putting this together!

Keep this locked in the cage
TheLittleSongbird29 March 2018
The cover and the idea of the story for 'Uncaged' were not bad, the cover looked pretty creepy actually and while unoriginal the story's idea intrigued. Having seen my fair share recently of bad low-budget films and decent ideas executed badly in film, part of me was also nervous.

Nervousness that sadly was proven to be justified. There may be worse films out there than 'Uncaged', but it is definitely among the worst recent viewings for me and a very good example of how not to do a low-budget/B film. This is not coming from someone narrow-minded or wanting to hate everything, actually aim to be a fair reviewer and it actually takes a lot for me to give a low rating to a film and be negative. Giving something the lowest possible rating is not a regularly used one these days, but 'Uncaged' is for me one of the deserved recent recipients.

'Uncaged's' good potential ends with the story concept. It is an example of a film that starts poorly, with the "trying to be clever but in reality looks cheap and a visual eyesore" photography and editing rendering the opening not just confusing but incomprehensible. Unfortunately, this confusion doesn't go away and even increases with the jumpy structure and so many things left incomplete and vague.

On top of being confused, the story is also very erratic in pace. At some points it feels rushed. At other points it's tedious, that would have been improved if some of the content that was unnecessary and there for padding purposes was trimmed or cut. Nothing's fun or interesting and tension and suspense are nowhere in sight, instead it's all those things and a lot of parts, especially the character behaviours, are far-fetched, stupid and illogical. The script is awkward and never rings true, with a lot of ridiculousness and unintentional humour.

Couldn't get invested with any of the characters, because of the lack of development or drama and because they are just so annoying and incapable of rational or intelligent thought, and the direction is barely existent. The acting is really bad at best, the main protagonist tries but the antagonist is too over-the-top and the female lead is cringe-worthy.

It's not just the photography and editing in the opening that looks poor visually. Those elements are not much better throughout, and there is a drab, over-dark look. Standing out too in a not-good way is one of the worst-looking werewolves ever, even for low-budget there is no excuse for anything to look like something that would have looked awful 50 years ago. Audio is over-bearing and ruins any atmosphere by telegraphing it in advance.

To conclude, even for someone judging it for what it is 'Uncaged' was just a complete waste of time. 1/10 Bethany Cox

Stupid film
exorial-6954316 April 2016
I made an account just for the reason to say how stupidly dumb this film is, the only good thing about it is the guy in glasses, spoiler it makes no sense at all to how the mother had not killed her son or the father previously and when both friends enter the barn before the main char changes the guy in glasses goes to lock the cage and the other stops him, although the other guy is terrified of the main char for being a killed, why not just lock him in the cage anyways also he killed someone himself I turned it off after that point as the film is utterly retarded and makes no sense, don't waste your time watching this crap

The movie sucked
johndovletoglou26 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
So the movie was a low movie budget with new actors and bad visual effects. At first i was searching for a movie and i went through the categories section to search and found this movie.I was not sure what to think of it because you see a werewolf type of creature on the main picture of the film and it's also marked as a comedy. But the developers of the program i am using were right that they placed the movie in the comedy section because the way the actors were acting was laughable and they weren't acting they seemed that they were like forced to play in the movie, like someone was forcing them with a gun on the head to play on the movie and they were like OK lets do it so we can go home .That gangster Gonzo was bad a.f. and he tried to prove to the protagonist that he is strong by placing his hand a meter above the lighter like you could tell that his hand was too far away but man he was a tough guy that most of the people were afraid of him...Well i am not gonna say anything else and end this review right here.To anyone reading this you should know that this is my opinion.

Zzzzzzzzzzz. Garbage
MannyInNewYork18 December 2017
Garbage, probably but I really won't know because they lost me at the opening line. Any movie with an opening line of "she was thirsting for my penis" has nowhere to go but into the crapper. So no, I did not watch the movie. I turned it off right after hearing that line (which was in fact the first line of dialog in the movie).

I don't have high expectations, I'm not expecting another "Twelve Angry Men", I just want to watch a thriller, horror movie that tries to bring something new to the genre. This may be it, but I'll never know because the idiot that decided what the opening scene and dialog would be was too lame to realize that his choice sucked. Some won't care, some might think it's cool, but I was totally turned off. To the people involved in this grade Z production - get your selves sorted out. This is crap.

More Bite than Bark
scythertitus28 April 2016
There is a lot to like about this movie; it uses its limited budget well, the dialogue is great, the acting is solid and it has a unique story. All of these things add up to a decent horror comedy that fans of low budget horror will enjoy.

That being said it is also important to know not to expect some crazy, blood-soaked monster mash as things don't really get going in that department until near the end and are pretty tame, most likely due to budget restrictions. Instead the film is a more personal story, and a good one, it's just that with the title and the poster you might get the wrong idea and be expecting something you aren't going to get (a bit like Gareth Edwards' Monsters). It also has a few problems with pacing and logic, i.e. events occurring without any build up and then forgotten about until convenient, but nothing too off-putting.

This movie demands a lot of attention and has a lot packed into the first hour for the final act to pay off properly, but overall it has enough going for it to give it a shot. It works well as both a comedy and a horror, just know going in that it is a story-heavy movie rather than a mindless gore-fest and you won't be disappointed.

Nifty werewolf horror outing
Woodyanders4 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Teenager Jack (a fine and likeable performance by Ben Getz) starts to experience some major lifestyle changes shorty after turning 18. Jack discovers much to his shock and chagrin that he's descended from a family of werewolves.

Director/co-writer Daniel Robbins relates the absorbing story at a steady pace, takes time to develop the characters, maintains a generally serious tone throughout, further spices things up with an amusing sense of quirky lowbrow humor, tosses in a few interesting and unexpected plot twists, and delivers a satisfying smattering of bloody gore. Moreover, Jack makes for a sympathetic dude who the viewer feels sorry for while the use of comic book panel art as a means of bridging transitional scenes rates as a neat and inspired touch. The sound acting by the able cast keeps this movie humming: Kyle Kirkpatrick as raucous horndog Turner, Zack Weiner as the nerdy Brandon, Paulina Singer as the browbeaten Rose, Garrett Hendricks as fearsome hoodlum Gonzo, and Michelle Cameron as foxy babe Crystal. The grim surprise ending packs a startling punch. A really cool and enjoyable fright flick.

A Modern Day Take on the Werewolf Genre
pelhamc2 July 2016
Uncaged is the story of a college boy, forced to lock himself in a cage to protect the world from the beast within. The story follows three friends as they plunge into one wild weekend in the country. It has the classic supernatural metamorphosis element. The protagonist figures out how to use his dark power for good: to rescue a battered wife. The cast gave memorable performances as oddballs characters. It has high production value. The special effects are good. The plot moves with funny jokes. The comic book style animation was a nice touch. It's Teen Wolf meets an R. Kelly video. If you like werewolf pictures, you will like Uncaged.

I MAKE A MEAN TAPENADE
nogodnomasters9 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Jack Luskey (Ben Getz) discovers he is a werewolf when he is 18, the hard way. It is a family thing. He goes to the cabin in the woods with his two friends, Brandon (Zack Weiner) a virginal geek and Turner (Kyle Kirkpatrick) your basic misogynist teen male.

Jack has no control when he turns into a werewolf several nights in a row. This makes for an awkward vacation.

The special effects are saved toward the end. There is only a little blood and gore. Plot and acting are okay for a "B" film. Film utilizes a few "Creepshow" style graphics. They drink Johnnie Walker Blue scotch...a nice touch.

Guide: F-bomb, brief sex, male butt nudity. Drawn nudity.

Serviceable But Decent
jamaisj-838-9373215 October 2020
If you are looking for a movie to put on in the background, this is that movie; it's a good time-waster but will bore most horror fans. If you're looking for a decent horror for some teenagers, especially as their first horror movie. this should do; it's best for older teenagers or you'll have a lot of terms to talk about.

For anyone else, however, this is strictly serviceable. It's not a bad movie, and has some decent ideas, but it just doesn't really explore those ideas. If it had picked a direction and went with it, this movie could have been a decent movie.

As it is, however, it makes a decent movie but really doesn't get more exciting than a TV movie.
