One of the more underrated films of 2014
pratyush-0384817 October 2015
Khoobsurat is one of Sonam Kapoor's best performances. It is about a happy-go-lucky physiotherapist who comes to a royal family's house to treat the family patriarch. How she treats her patient and interacts with the family is the rest of the story. Sonam Kapoor plays the bubbly Dr. Milli Chakravarty with ease. Her mannerisms and actions are absolutely hilarious and make this film a treat to watch. Today she is known more as a fashionista than as an actress. I believe this film will start to make everyone see her as a leading lady. Fawad Khan, who is a well known actor in Pakistani Cinema and Television, is great in his debut. He seems confident and he compliments Sonam Kapoor very well. His performance as the disciplined Vikram Rathore is something to watch out for. Ratna Pathak and Kirron Kher are great in their supporting roles and do not go unnoticed in the film. Overall this film is funny, romantic and makes a great date night movie. This film was not talked about as much as other films such as Haider and Queen, but I believe it should be because I think it is one of the top 10 movies of 2014. Catch it whenever you can and you will enjoy the film.

Not just a chick flick
kushalashok21 September 2014
I watched this movie not just because my wife wanted to watch it, but also because it is a Disney Production. This fairytale has enough punches and turns to keep you interested and aligned with the story. It lives up to the expectations of audience by including a number of activities and events that are known to all of us. For instance, some of the hobbies and postures used by the protagonists are funny yet common.

I liked the set up and all the actors played their characters well. The USP of this movie for me is the fact that it connects with you in no time and then maintains it till the end.

Thankfully its not a straight remake of the famous Hrishi Da classic and a fairly enjoyable venture too unexpectedly.
bobbysing26 November 2014
Many would agree to the fact that this was one particular film which everyone was expecting to be a pretty bad remake of the famous Hrishikesh Mukherjee-Rekha classic having the same title (with different spellings) released in 1980.

But surprisingly that is not the case since the film is not at all a straight remake of the 80s path breaking film from any angle. And the major argument behind this declaration is that Hrishi Da's script was actually about a young energetic girl entering into the house of her newly-wed elder sister and dealing with her strict mother-in-law running the house with her own self-dictated discipline. Whereas the present 2014 official version is about a physiotherapy doctor visiting her client's royal mansion in Rajasthan, looked after by a strict mother and her young son, instead of her old disabled husband.

So where the original was about the in-laws and the new big family where an elder sister has been married in, the latter is about a completely stranger family and that too of only 4 members, without any traditional values to be taken care of other than the professional ethics of a doctor. And anyone living in India can easily understand that how difficult and different a script becomes when you are talking about the elder sister's in-laws confronted by the younger sister visiting the house for a few days in comparison of a doctor staying in her patient's mansion taking it as a professional assignment.

Hence clearing all doubts, Hrishi Da's unforgettable gem KHUBSOORAT stays untouched excelling in its own distinctive theme and Shashank Ghosh's current venture just revolves around the same basic plot but doesn't copy any of the original film sequences as it is, despite being an official version.

Moving over the remake status, the film begins interestingly with the elegant Fawad Khan and the hyper and ever-smiling (overdoing it) Sonam Kapoor as the (too) young physiotherapy doctor. It keeps moving at a good pace with an all likable feel before the interval and has only two avoidable, filmy sequences to put you off in its initial half. The first one is the below average and cheap song sequence of "Engine Ki Seeti" and the other is a ridiculous kidnapping scene which contributes just nothing. Still the overall enjoyable mood and few light comic moments manage to keep you engrossed and one forgets these pretty weak, silly insertions as it moves further.

Post interval the only factor which goes against the movie is that even if you haven't seen the original, you still exactly know what's going to happen next. But again this demerit of an all predictable progression gets smartly covered by two fine performances by Fawad Khan and Aamir Raza Hussain superbly along with few immensely likable, innovative songs composed well. Also the film gets a great support from its final 20 minutes which do have a killer scene between Fawad and Kirron Kher. And therefore what you take back home while moving out of the theater is a smile with 'no complaints' kind of feel despite having watched an all predictable film right from the word go.

Speaking specifically this is not a Sonam Kapoor film like the original was a Rekhamovie all the way. The new age version is more of a collective effort with some very important contributions coming from Fawad Khan, Aamir Raza Hussain, Kiron Kher and above all the intelligent, innovative background score which keeps the energy flowing. Few enjoyable sequences and entertaining dialogues offered at regular intervals lift up the film repeatedly and the two songs, "Naina" and "Jo Main Aisa Jaanti" (by Sneha) build up the mood in a beautiful manner. Plus whenever Sonam's ringtone says "Maa Ka Phone Aaya" it does make you laugh effortlessly. And here I am not talking about any of those commercial, deliberate tracks wrongly promoted on the channels instead of the other well-made songs in its soundtrack.

In the performance section, Sonam leads from the front as per the script but not as per the impact on the viewers. No doubt she is much better, bright and energetic from all her previous films, still her act largely remains dependent upon the supporting cast till the climax unlike the original. Also she strangely vanishes from the screen for a good amount of time towards the end, though everyone keeps talking about her as the center of attraction. Fawad Khan in his debut movie excels in the same way as he does in his serials. The boy certainly has a special controlled charm in his stylized performance that helps the film big time including the comedy sequences, especially in the climax. Ratna Pathak Shah suffers due to a confusingly written character and is no-where close to her mother doing the same role in the Hrishi da classic. Aamir Raza Hussain adds a lot to the overall impact of the film despite being limited to a wheel chair throughout. Kirron Kher, playing the Punjabi mother once again seems to be a bit loud at the beginning and I personally didn't like Sonam calling her by name with a "Tu- Tadaak" kind of approach in the film's opening moments. However the balancing scene in the end explained the importance of that particular approach quite entertainingly and I got my answer from the writers. Further capturing the outdoors and the big mansions as a part of the script, the DOP does its job skillfully and so does the supporting cast in a reasonable manner as required.

Summing up, this first presentation of Disney does have a routine, predictable script having few major drops too. However its young and lively feel, accompanied by some crisp editing, good performances and an innovative background score cover up its minuses well and result in a fairly enjoyable, clean family entertainer respectfully living up to the reputation earned by its title.

Simple and Funny script....Key for its Success
AnotherMovieFreak23 September 2014
Sonam/Fawad's Khoobsurat will stole your heart because of its good acting, fresh and quirky dialogues, and a nice gorgeous set...

Mili Chakroborty, enters into a royal family, controlled by a strict disciplined Maharani(Ratna Pathak Shah), to treat her grieving husband in wheel chair. Though According to her the young Prince is Khadus(Fawad Khan), but how she gelled up and become a part of this over disciplined Family, is Khoobsorat all about...

Good Points: 1) Acting- Sonam as Mili is a treat to watch, Simple, bubbly, carefree Sonam, maturing as an actor and was quite convincing. She looked gorgeous in every costume, Her Portrayal was so simple, that you will fall in love with Mili...And the way she delivered Dialouges were utterly Cute.. Kiron Kher as Manju is a typical punjabi lady who never thinks twice before using any damn word..Her comic timing was perfect and she was the life of the entire movie. She carried the role so perfectly as if it was made for her, wonderful actress she is. her conversation with Mili will tickle you again and again. A Desirable mom... Ratna Pathak Shah, as usual a perfect choice for a Sophisticated, well dressed , discipline freak, Strict Maharani...Her expression, her way of Saying 'ANTIQUE' is so perfect, She was a perfect contrast for Kiron Kher.. Fawad Khan, Handsome, perfect expression, Subtle acting are some words that will describe the actor from over the border..He was perfect as a prince...who tried to control her lust/love for Mili throughout the movie in a Strict and Sophisticated way...ha ha ..funny...his mute conversations with Mili were one of those many funny parts... Aditi Hayderi, Pretty as hell..

2)Dialouges: The charm of the entire movie were dialouges...they were perfect, full of one liner punches, ticklish and fresh...they will keep you involved throughout the movie

3) Background: one of the best Set I have seen in recent time movies...it was remarkable and mesmerizing..

4) Music: each and every Score are good and perfect for every situation...engine ki seeti and maa ka phone are funny and fab..

5) Costumes: Oh my my... Pretty Pretty Pretty..

Bad Points: The story was predictable and was loosing its pace in the second half for around 15-16 minutes...

U can seriously Go and watch it and will come out laughing....

Watch It Once
Geeta35225 October 2017
I am a die hard Fawad Khan fan and watch anything he stars in. That being said, I must admit that this movie had its high points and low points. I could not help but think as I watched the film that it was too western in orientation for its audience and therefore a misfit in Indian cinema; it was so very disappointing! I gave it a seven because I am a fan of both Fawad Khan and Kirron Kher. This film was a waste of these two powerful actors talent.

A Decent, Breezy Watch...
namashi_113 December 2014
Loosely based on the 1980 film by the same name, 'Khoobsurat' is a decent, breezy watch, that has something for the romantics. Its not flawless, by any means, but it benefits from good direction & impressive performances.

'Khoobsurat' Synopsis: A hopelessly romantic physiotherapist meets a handsome young Rajput prince who is the complete opposite of her and engaged to someone else.

'Khoobsurat' is a light-hearted, simple romantic-comedy, about simple characters, under circumstances of their own. Indira Bisht's Screenplay is nicely written, although the pace in the second-hour begins to lose. Also, 'Khoobsurat' overstays its welcome by at least 20-minutes. Some trimming, was strongly needed.

Shashanka Ghosh's Direction is good. Cinematography is well-crafted. Editing is a weak link. The film is loose, at times. Music by Sneha Khanwalkar & Badshah is fantastic.

Performance-Wise: Sonam Kapoor looks gorgeous & fits the role well, however, she's mechanical in scenes that demand her to flaunt her comedic side. Fawad Khan is wonderful, enacting his part with dignity & control. Ratna Pathak Shah is terrific, but its Kirron Kher who steals the show, with an electric performance. Aamir Raza Hussain deserves a special mention. He's first-rate!

On the whole, 'Khoobsurat' has its own charm, indeed!

Why are we being served with such Junk !
manasrules20 September 2014
Just plain awful. I am not a being fan of Sonam Kapoor's high flying attitude and awful over acting but still decided to give this movie a shot. Turned out I was wrong, this movie turned out to be disaster. No comedy (rather irritating comedy) and no story line what so ever. Nothing that you would not have seen more than 50 times before. Songs are plain disgusting and sometimes even kind of cheap. Bolloywood is serving us complete junk this year with the intention to survive by heavily marketing this Junk. My suggestion would be to skip this disgrace of a movie and go watch an English film instead or spend your time on something else. You will be glad that you did.

Lovely Movie!!!
sa_a19 September 2014
Khoobsurat- Actually a beautiful movie. no doubt the starting was a bit slow but the audience never gave up like Milli didn't and continue the treatment for Mr. Shekar. Sonam Kapoor's Every action had very natural effects in it. The way she sat, ate, laughed, walked, jumped hence everything she did was her true side. But, on the other hand the Royal Family had strict rules and for them Sonam was no less than a retarded Doctor. Fawad Khan like always has acted very well and his face expression were way too amazing. It is a MUST watch movie as The songs are worth listening to.

The cinematography rocked and undoubtedly everything was Magnificent.

Fun
crossbow010623 February 2015
This is not meant to be a great film, the storyline is not new and it is fairly predictable. However, it is still enjoyable due to the quick pace of the film and the general likability of the actors. Mili plays a physiotherapist who goes to Sambalgarh to help a Raja learn to walk again after he was in an accident 10 years before that killed his oldest son. However, he does not really want to try. Mili is a middle class doctor and is a "fish out of water" in such a prim, proper household. She speaks out of turn, acts way too familiar, but over time she becomes liked. She makes a difference in a family that finds it difficult to communicate with each other. The living soon is Vikram, and though engaged, he and Mili develop a liking for each other. So, its very enjoyable, and the pretty Sonam Kapoor makes for a very appealing title character. I'd also recommend it to anyone who wants to begin to try Bollywood films. It has appeal that transcends the setting of the film.

Khoob kharab!
American-Jedi19 September 2014
Absolute crap-fest. Typical desi film about rich family and a supposed do- gooder that arrives to change their lives. This year has been a testament to really bad Hindi films. And this mess joins the pile of atrocious movie- making that has become a staple from Bollywood. The movie moves at a really slow pace and the characters are a little too cardboard for my taste.

Sonam's act is more irritating than convincing. More loud and obnoxious than appealing. Maybe Anil Kapoor should plan investing in her training rather than keep producing films like Aisha and Khoobsurat for her. The actress actually seemed talented when she did Raanjhanan.

The music made me fall asleep and the dialog was painful to hear.

Khoobsurat is boring, benign, and bland. Sadly, Shashanka displays none of the eccentric creativity that we saw in his earlier films, and he fails to create moments of charm. From poorly-established families to a lack of a proper climax to the film, the script of Khoobsurat proves to be a pain. Anyone with any taste in decent flicks should stay away.

This Is a Fun ride,,,Sonam at last showing her actual acting capabilities
anupapu819 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
kHOOBSURAT- This is a hell lot of fun ride....Seriously am a person who actually think that Sonam Kapoor cant act or i can say she is a bad actress.....I only liked her acting in 'Delhi 6' and a little bit in 'Mausam' & 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag'....But she proved me wrong ,, this time she nailed it.....Still will not say that she is a great actress but if the character suits her than she can act really good (her character in Delhi 6 and Khoobsurat are too similar and i think its the best character for Sonam)..... Trailer has almost shown the whole story of the movie,,,,but its not about the plot but about the screenplay and the execution.........There are moments to watch which will make u laugh out load,,,,there is silliness in the humor which is most welcome(of coarse the movie is by one of the biggest production house of Hollywood-.Disney which is actually famous for making childish movies)........ Therd is romance , there is emotion and a lot of comedy......There are so many good dialogs in the movie that i cant tell then in the review...... Sonam as Milli Chakrabortyis brilliant,,,,she say everything which comes to her mind,,,,and never hide anything in her mind......This is one character which is made for Sonam Kapoor...... Fawad Khan who is a Pakistani TV serial actor is a great discovery for bollywood.....He has a royal look in him....Everything from hair to Beard to shirt to tie to trouser looks royal in him.....I have never seen any bollywood actor looking so good in a royal outfit.....he is a good actor too,,,,and may have a great future in bollywood..... Kiton Khet as a Punjabi mother get some best lines of the movie and sleepwalks through the role which she has done hundred times..... Ratna Pathak as a strict disciplined mother did well and her character matches to her own character from the program Sharabhai vs Sharabhai..... The cinematography has been brilliant,,,,whole royal feel of Rajasthan fits perfectly in the movie.....Background score is quirky as needed ,, but number of songs should have been reduced.....The flow of the movie was so good that some sad songs breaks it...... Few minutes before the pre climax part having some sad scenes of about 10 min was the only boring part of the movie......That is negligible...... There are some jokes related to the tone which royal families use while saying Hindi,,,watch out for those..... Sonam should do more movies like this...... 7.8/10.. by ANuP APu KuMaR.....

Milli meets Khoobsurat Disney!!!
jmoneyjohal20 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Mili (sonam) is a physiotherapist who is quite outspoken and her mother (kirron kher) feels her daughter deserves a rich alliance. One day, Mili offers to fill up for her colleague by attending to the royal family of Sambalgarh because the man of the house Sekhar (Aamir raza) is a paralytic. All matters happen under the strict eye of the lady of the house Nirmala Rathore (ratna). Mili enters the disciplined house and things go for a toss. Even Nirmala's son Vikram (fawad) also dislikes her but things change at one point. What exactly happens forms the rest.

The director has come up with an predictable storyline and while the presentation was rich, the narrative was good. The dialogues were good. The script was expected and the screenplay was very tight for the most part, and good. The background score was melodious and three songs were worth watching. Cinematography was the main strength to this film. Editing okay but was required at few places. Costumes were well designed to suit the royalty while the art department was majestic. Sonam Kapoor looks cute and she is the soul of the film she gives a marvelous act, Fawad Khan looks good, and gives a restrained performance that is done well , Ratna Pathak was excellent, Aamir Raza was apt, Kirron Kher was entertaining. Others didn't get much scope.

The film is meant to be a remake of the original which came in the 80s but it is more of an ode. The first half revolves around elements of comedy, some romance and some drama. The interval bang was good and the film gets a bit serious before getting back into happy mode. Overall, Khoobsurat is a true blue Disney film. There is a prince, there is his royal family and he falls in love with a so called imperfect women. So while sticking to this formula the film is still very enjoyable even though it is clichéd, there are many hilarious moments also. Recommend watch for the young generation because the film offers what was excepted, a fluffy enjoyable chick flick... Well sort of a chick flick

Horrible, pathetic. Totally avoidable.
sammy-journos20 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
One of the most horrible movie. Sonam Kapoor has overdose of over-acting. Pathetic to watch. Songs are painful. Total waste of money and time. Sonam Kapoor should look for some other career option instead of wasting people money and time. Only Kiron Kher impresses. It seems Anil Kapoor must also be thinking why did he had to produce such a movie. Sonam Kapoor should play second fiddle if she still want to act. Comparing Rekha's Khoobsurat with Sonam Kapoor's movie will be an insult to both Rekhaji and the old Khoobsurat. Please avoid this movie and save money, time and headache medicine cost. Fawad Khan has done justice to his role.

A missed opportunity
r96sk13 November 2020
A missed opportunity.

The rom/com nature of 'Khoobsurat' kills it, for me. Don't get me wrong, what is produced isn't anything all that bad... but it ain't enjoyable either, at least for me. There's sizeable potential in the premise, namely on the side of Shekhar & Nirmala's story.

Aamir Raza Husain and Ratna Pathak Shah are terrific in those aforementioned roles, there's so many possibilities with them. Instead, the film decides to head into the silly comedy realm instead of making use of a possibly strong narrative to create a very hearty production.

With that said, for what does happen it isn't terrible. As noted I couldn't enjoy it enough, but Sonam K Ahuja (Mili) and Fawad Khan (Vikram) do alright. There are few good scenes between them, but it's mostly forgettable unfortunately. The music is decent, "Naina" does stick out.

I can't say I'd recommend this, though you could do much worse I guess. I just would've loved a deeper story, especially with some pieces already in place for it to be so.

Overall , a bad attempt to remake such a classic movie. Disappointing
ketgup8319 September 2014
When you are remaking a cult like Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Khoobsurat, plenty of comparisons will definitely arise. The question is whether it was on par with the original one ? – Well, It was just about there but neither it did full justice to the original screenplay nor was the acting was even comparable to classic.

Khoobsurat tells a story of Milli (Sonam Kapoor) who is chirpy- bubbly-full- of-life physiotherapist who enters a royal family and changes the household.

Shashank Ghosh who gave us forgettable films like Waisa Bhi Hota Hain Part 2 and Quick Murugun, comes with a lame script after been highly impressed with original Khoobsurat which gave him the chance to direct the film. Frankly speaking , when I heard about the remake , I was wondering who could have played the character so perfectly as Rekha did. Sonam Kapoor stepped in the role and but was now where close to it. Director has tweaked a story little bit by adding new characters. The film starts off well with couple of scenes standing out. But that is it , nothing more than this. The problem is that we have admired the original part so much that this film , even though, is bound to be compared, falls short of it. Please note : If you are watching the film for the first time , you might like it. The screenplay has been changed in bits and pieces. The songs are terrible. Cinematoraphy is amazing. Art direction is captivating. Background score is just about OK. Coming to performances , Sonam Kapoor does a decent job but still goes over the top in few scenes Rina Pathak is strictly okay. Fawad Khan does well in the supporting role. Rina Pathak is strictly okay. Kirron Kher repeats herself as Punjabi Mom.

Overall , a bad attempt to remake such a classic movie. Disappointing

ANNOYING
binthaider-755-82284921 September 2019
So she is suppose to be a grown professional physiotherapist?! Gone to university, has a medical job? Is a doctor?! She has no manners, no respect, no idea how to behave. She is childish, nosey, annoying, unrelateable and unprofessional! If I came across someone like her, I would run a mile. And if I ended up with physiotherapist like her, I would sack her after a minute! It is meant to be comical I know but this is just stupid. Can not take anything seriously! Couldn't get past 25 minutes. Had to switch it off.

Review
mpsreen22 November 2014
After seeing him in a couple of Pakistani TV serial movies 'Humsafar' and 'Zindagi Gulzar Hai'on Zindagi Channel I went to see Fawad Khan in his debut movie, Khoobsurat. Frankly, one was highly disappointed, not with Fawad Khan but the movie as a whole. You cannot expect much from a talented actor if none of the other actors seem to fit in their roles. The plot is half-baked, half taken from 1963 B/W movie 'Aaj aur Kal' where Sunil Dutt is physiotherapist come to cure the wheel chair princess Nanda and Ashok Kumar playing the Maharaja, and half taken from the movie of the same name in the '80s. So Sonam Kapoor has to fill into the shoes of the main character of not one but two movies from the classical era. The screenplay is weak and with that everything seems contrived from the very first scene. Perhaps the physiotherapists of the cricketing fraternity need a lesson or two from Sonam on how to send hurt players back into the game and win matches. And within this framework where does Fawad Khan fit in? With only 15 minutes to spend with the wheelchair maharajah Sonam needs some form of distraction and Fawad provides as the reticent prince almost like an extra. The lack of chemistry between the lead players at no stage stirs any emotion in the viewer. Shashank Ghosh as a director needs to understand that a movie is not an ad where the models are plastic images but needs a lot more to capture the viewer's imagination. In the end, one is almost left to feel that Fawad is there to attract people to the movie hall to see the real protagonist, Sonam Kapoor. Not once is he truly asked to display the brilliance he showed in the Zindagi channel serials. The only redeeming factor of the movie is that the palace looks like a place. As far as the music is concerned, thankfully the background music remains in the background and the dialogues and lyrics of the songs are clearly audible. Overall, the movie fails to rise above average at any point.

A case of royal misfit
ahwaan_padhee23 September 2014
Its not completely hazardous to watch a formula-ridden flick if you arecomfortable in a cinematic space familiar to you.More than 3 decades back, veteran director Hrishikesh Mukherjee made the slice- of-life family caper with Rekha in the lead. That iconic film examined the inclusion of an independent-thinking girl in a matriarchal family,in alighter vein.Fast Forward to 2014 - Adman Shashank Ghosh replicates the premise in 'Khubsoorat' which marks the collaboration of Anil Kapoor productions with Disney Films.

Its a case of old wine served in new bottle.Much like a fairy-tale adventure,Khubsoorat unfolds with the spontaneous and chirpy chatter-box Mili(Sonam Kapoor),a sports physiotherapist by profession with Sehwag,Dhoni in her client list, entering and breaking the strictures of a royal family.Though her job is to clinically treat the wheel-chaired king,Shekhar Rathod(Aamir Raza Hussain),she is an uninvited typhoon, inviting the rage of the disciplinarian matriarch,Nirmala Devi(Ratna Pathak, steps into her mom,Dina Pathak's shoes)but creates ripples in the heart of the starchy scion, Vikram(Fawad Khan).

Shashank has an eye for details.A royal setting, laden with decorum, which forms a backdrop for the central defiance is aptly crafted and Tushar Ray's sumptuous visuals soothe the sparks that fly between the protagonists, who are exactly the opposites in their mannerisms.Shashank also gives a sensitive touch to the reason behind the deafening silence inhabiting the dysfunctional family. However, many of the sequences appear contrived due to a sloppy screenplay.A beaten-to-death treatment and predictable narrative stops us from being invested in the characters and their lives.Sneha Khanwalkar's peppy numbers and the interesting voice- overs doing the mind-talks between the aafat Mili and khadus 'Vicku' cheer up the mood.

Quite expectedly, the film showcases Sonam's acting chops (again after'Aisha').The actress gives Mili the right degree of effervescence and eccentricity.Known for her fashionista credentials , her costumes are outlandish and yet she is picture-perfect.She is ably supported by a motley of accomplished actors - Its Kirron Kher ,playing Mili's noisy boisterous and outrageous Punjabi Mom, Manju, who keeps us thoroughly entertained. Her bouyant antics construct a perfect foil to the high-on-etiquettes, Ratna Pathak.Pakistani heart-throb Fawad Khan makes Vikram the cynosure of all eyes and is justifiably restrained.Sadly, all of them seldom get an opportunity to rise above the muddled script.

Khubsoorat is a shaky ride.It will make you laugh, but an excess of candy floss also exasperates at the same time.

Why mess with a classic?
ilpintl20 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I was disappointed in "Khoobsurat" - but the scores of teenage girls in the movie theater squealed and ooh-ed and aah-ed at Sonam Kapoor's aggressively mismatched clothing and juvenile mugging, so I was—overwhelmingly—in the minority. The marketing department of the studio has figured out their niche demographic and cynically plays to it to the exclusion of all others, resulting in dumbed-down writing, rudimentary characters, and the humor—such as it is—is broad and unsubtle.

In this film, everything about Sonam Kapoor was hammy and irritating - the film was carried by the rest of the cast: the new Pakistani hero (Fawad Khan, who has dignity, style, an old world charisma in spades—along with a spiffy wardrobe designed by Raghavendra Rathore—leaves all the recent callow Bandra/Juhu debutants in the dust. Pakistan produces the best movie heroes and that—not the ISI-trained terrorists—should be their chief export: look at Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor, even Shah Rukh Khan's ancestors, and that nice young man from "London, Paris, New York" - all originally from what is now Pakistan.); Ratna Pathak Shah, reinventing her mother's iconic role as the matriarch who rules her family firmly—withering looks and frosty glares appears to be a wonderful genetic trait passed down from mother to daughter—rises formidably above the trite material. Costume designers Uma Bija and Karuna Laungani dressed Ratna superbly - she looked fantastic and was every bit the grande dame. The actor who played Ashok Kumar's role was very good, too - I've never seen him before. Kirron Kher, unfortunately, overacts dreadfully and her Punjabi mother shtick is nothing new - she can do this blindfolded and sound asleep.

Hrishikesh Mukerjee made a sweet and simple film, which remains a classic to this day. Ashok Kumar, Rekha (who won the 1980 Filmfare Best Actress Award for this performance), and Dina Pathak were the main players, but every single person in the cast benefited from having well-defined, fully realized characters to portray.

The new film's writers have thrown in so much additional, superfluous detail, changing the family the Rekha character has to transform into a Rajput royal family to no discernible purpose other than to literally give Sonam Kapoor's character a prince at the end.

Sonam Kapoor is pretty, but vexingly concerned only with the external elements of her character - the arc, the nuances and shadings a proper, committed actress would bring (as Rekha did so winningly) completely escape her. So she ends up being unrelentingly strident - and it's hard to imagine any person who's completed med school and holds down a professional job being so gauche and junglee, which the writers try to persuade us is being charmingly free-spirited. So put this down as one more Sonam Kapoor vanity/fluff project, where the overriding message is "I love my fabulous life, I am a fashionista, and my daddy will keep arranging expensive films for me in which I can undeservedly hog screen space—no change that—L'Oreal says I deserve it." You want to shake her and say, Grow up - you're pushing thirty, and should now be able to focus and do better work. Thank goodness, she did "Delhi 6", "Raanjhana", and that tiny graceful role in "Bhag, Milkha, Bhag", or folks would seriously question her choice of career. Perhaps then it's the director's job to tease a performance out of her. Oh, well…

On the positive side, the setting of the film is lovely - you know what a sucker I am for Rajasthan's gorgeous sun-scorched landscapes.

It was a fantastic family entertainment
amjadmiandad-797-91574520 September 2014
I would say it was a Disney thing. Family, comedy, romance and drama. Couldn't control the loudness of my laugh quite a few times. I won't like to compare this Khoobsurat with Rekha's Khoobsurat as standards have been changed a lot in this long long gap. Sonam Kapoor done a lot better than her previous works after Delhi 6. Fawad Khan's face expressions were more than amazing. He is a good looking good actor. He has done a superb work here. Kiron Kher was typical entrainment with her famous Punjabi style as seen in 'Total Sayapa' and her other movies. Cinematography was done marvellously.

cons. Music area needed more attention. Just felt few usual overdone scenes. Last couple of minutes were not felt live as expected to be.

Overall it was entertainment, rather say enjoyed my 127 minutes.

Disney Rocks In India
ashazjw12322 February 2023
This movie is just light hearted fun. I loved how the characters where so likeable and simple. The plot was awfully predictable but the story was still so fun to watch. Disney has definitely brought its fun vibes to India with this movie. This film wasn't realistic at all but that's not its aim. It is a movie for children and teens. I loved the vibe of this movie and its ambience was lovely. The tone and intensity of the movie is so constantly joyful. The acting is average and setting is amazing. I loved how there is a mild message on love, discipline, rules and parenting. I also loved the pure innocence of Sonam Kapoor's character. I think this movie is great and Disney should definitely make more of these movies. 7/10! Amazing to watch with family!

Nauseating.

It's appalling that the movie has 4+ rating on IMDB. Actually shows what Indians like to watch. This movie is appalling and garbage when compared to the original Khoobsurat (1980). Sonam should have mercy on people and quit acting. She tries to be cute in the movie which comes out as pretentious and annoying. Fawad as brooding handsome man is quite good to watch. Kirron Kher, as usual is very loud.

Cute

Cute Bollywood meets Disney type of film. I liked that it focused on the other characters in the film rather than just developing the romance. One time watch.
