Shailene Woodley (“Big Little Lies”) is set to headline “A Beautiful Journey,” an English-language comedy-drama feature from French writer-director Nathalie Marchak (“Out of Instinct”).
“A Beautiful Journey” is being produced by Anonymous Federation, a joint venture between Anonymous Content and Federation Studios, and Gabman, the company founded by Valerie Garcia, who previously co-headed one of France’s leading distribution shingles, Mars Films.
Rosalie Cimino, a former top agent at Paris-based firm Ubba, will produce on behalf of Anonymous Federation, while Garcia will produce on behalf of Gabman. Principal photography will begin in the fall.
Woodley will play Mary, an ex-swimming champion who now works as a mermaid at the New York Aquarium, struggling to raise her 7-year-old son, Lulu, on her own. When they get evicted, to protect him, she pretends they are about to embark on a beautiful journey. But in doing so, she’s beginning to lose — and eventually find — herself.

Andrew Karpen always seemed to be in motion. At festivals like Cannes or Toronto, I’d see him racing down the street, greeting filmmakers or fellow executives with a booming, “Hey, buddy!”
At parties, he’d come up behind me, grab my shoulders and give them a shake like a Little League coach trying to loosen up a player before a game. It was his way of getting me to cast off my congenital stiffness.
And he’d enter the restaurant for one of our lunches like he’d been shot out of a cannon, peppering me with questions about my life before we even sat down and ribbing me for failing to see the latest film he was releasing. “I know you hate to leave your apartment, but would it kill you to see one of my movies?” he would joke.

Movies about irresponsible parenting in the great outdoors have become something of an arthouse subgenre over the past decade. Matt Ross’ Captain Fantastic, Debra Granik’s Leave No Trace, India Donaldson’s Good One and Philippe Lesage’s Who by Fire all feature children coming of age in the wilderness as their fathers mess up in one way or another. If there’s perhaps one takeaway from all of these films, it’s to be on guard the next time your dad asks you to go on a long hike or camping trip.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese have been developing a movie adaptation of Erik Larson’s The Devil in the White City for the past decade. During that time, the project transformed from a movie into a TV series, with various actors and directors attached. It seems that the project has come full circle as Deadline reports that 20th Century Studios has snagged the project, with DiCaprio in talks to star and Scorsese in talks to direct.
The Devil in the White City tells the story of Daniel H. Burnham, “a visionary architect who sets out to mark history with the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and Dr. H. Holmes, America’s first modern serial killer and the man behind the notorious ‘Murder Castle’ that was built in the shadow of the Fair.” DiCaprio and Scorsese, along with Stacey Sher, Rick Yorn, and Jennifer Davisson, would also produce the project.

Clint Eastwood’s riveting drama Sully is currently streaming on Max, and the film’s sudden boost in popularity is a sharp reminder of just how underrated this project has been. The movie tells the real-life story of a commercial pilot named Captain Chesley who makes an emergency landing on the Hudson River after his plane is damaged during a flight. It’s an extremely tense and gripping story about how split-second decisions can define our lives, and it remains one of Clint Eastwood’s best-directed movies.
And yet, despite the level of talent both in front and behind the camera, Sully is still a hugely underrated movie that doesn’t always receive the recognition that it deserves. Although the film was popular on release and gave a much-needed boost to Eastwood’s reputation as a modern director, it seems to have exited the cultural consciousness in recent years -...

Viggo Mortensen is a three-time Oscar nominated performer who has been very picky with his projects, appearing only in a handful of movies in a 30-plus year career. But how many of his titles hold up as classics? Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1958 in New York City, Mortensen made his big screen debut with a brief performance as an Amish farmer in “Witness” (1985). Supporting roles in “Carlito’s Way” (1993), “Crimson Tide” (1995), “G.I. Jane” (1997) and many others quickly followed. He achieved stardom in middle age playing the warrior Aragorn in Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, released in 2001, 2002 and 2003. His first Oscar bid as Best Actor came shortly thereafter for David Cronenberg‘s thriller “Eastern Promises” (2007), followed by nominations for “Captain Fantastic” (2016) and the Best Picture-winning “Green Book” (2018).

The New York-based distributor Bleecker Street is ten years old – and affirmed its ongoing commitment to films for “grown-ups”.
At ten years old, and with more than 70 films under its belt, the American distributor Bleecker Street has backed a whole host of films that others may not have put the same heft and care behind.
In its first few years, it was involved with the likes of Eye In The Sky, Captain Fantastic, The Lost City Of Z and Beasts Of No Nation. And in more recent times, it’s brought films such as Mass, The Assistant and Breaking to the screen. On the surface, it’s looking tougher and tougher to get the films it’s backing to break through at the box office, but thankfully, that’s not stopping the Bleecker Street team from trying.

Bleecker Street celebrated its 10th anniversary on Saturday night following the New York Film Festival premiere of Mike Leigh’s “Hard Truths.” It was an emotional evening, one that honored Bleecker Street’s track record of producing acclaimed indies such as “Captain Fantastic” and “Trumbo,” as well as its endurance in a challenging business. Much of that credit goes to Andrew Karpen, Bleecker Street’s founder and the recipient of the Variety Vanguard Award.
“There are few people who love independent movies like Andrew Karpen, who spent the last 25 years championing independent movies,” said Ramin Setoodeh, Variety‘s co-editor-in-chief, who noted that in addition to launching Bleecker Street, Karpen served as co-ceo of Focus Features for more than a decade.
The evening was also a chance for Karpen’s friends and colleagues to recognize his personal courage. The Bleecker Street chief was diagnosed with glioblastoma in January. “We are in awe of Andrew,...

An adaptation of Erik Larson’s The Devil in the White City has been in the works for years (more on that later), but last we heard, Hulu had scrapped the limited series, which was slated to be executive-produced by Martin Scorsese. However, producer Stacey Sher told Deadline that the project is still in the works.
“I’m still involved,” Sher said. “I never give up.” When asked if audiences could expect to see it sometime soon, Sher responded, “I mean, I hope so. It’s not imminent, but it is never ever far from my mind.” She also confirmed that Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, Rick Yorn, and Jennifer Davisson are “still involved” in the project.

If looks could kill, Casey Affleck would’ve been six feet underground during the 87th Academy Awards.
When Ben Affleck’s younger brother landed his first-ever Oscar, owing to his performance in Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea, the Batman v Superman star teared up out of pride. But when Denzel Washington lost the prestigious accolade to the 48-year-old actor, his eyes filled with tears of bitter anguish.

Viggo Mortensen is eyeing his next directorial project.
“It’s only indigenous languages, it has no white characters and there will be no movie stars – just lots and lots of horses. But I am convinced it will have wide appeal, because it’s a universal coming-of-age story about an adolescent boy,” he tells Variety.
The “Lord of the Rings” alumnus, who wrote the script for his next project “many years ago,” has been hoping to bring it to screen even before he made his directorial debut with “Falling” in 2020. Three years later, he completed his second film as director, Western “The Dead Don’t Hurt” – selected as this year’s opener of Karlovy Vary Film Festival, where Mortensen is set to pick up the Festival President’s Award.
“I thought: ‘I’ll make ‘Falling’ and prove to everyone I can direct.’ But I still couldn’t get this one made, so I went: ‘Well,...

Over the course of one outrageous trip, sisterhoods are rekindled, the past resurfaces and there are enough sparks, raunch and romance to change all their lives in unexpected ways.”
The trailer sees Marilyn remarrying just two months after her husband died, Lou (Sarandon) coming out of her cat-lady shell and Kitty (Ralph) questioning Lou about a kegel ball Marilyn gave her. Screen Rant interviewed Viggo Mortensen about his work scoring his second film as a director, The Dead Don't Hurt. With a background in piano and experimental music, Mortensen brings a practiced ear to film composing, creating a fitting score for his latest film. Mortensen wrote the vast majority of his score before filming the movie, and showed the music to his collaborators to help set the movie's unique tone.
Viggo Mortensens latest movie The Dead Dont Hurt showcases the many talents of a creative who refuses to be defined by any singular role. This applies to his performances in Peter Jacksons groundbreaking The Lord of The Rings trilogy, his Academy Award-nominated efforts in Eastern Promises, Captain Fantastic, and Green Book, and even his role as an actor altogether. Mortensen wrote, directed, and acted in The Dead Dont Hurt, a deliberate Western that tells the story of a doomed romance against the backdrop of the U.

Mortensen’s sophomore feature as a director, The Dead Don’t Hurt, debuted at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival to rave reviews. “Death by Lighting,” Netflix’s upcoming series about the rise and eventual assassination of U.S. President James Garfield, is adding to its cast.
Variety has learned that Bradley Whitford and Shea Whigham have joined the show as series regulars. In addition, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Paula Malcomson, and Tuppence Middleton have also joined the series.
They will appear alongside previously announced leads Michael Shannon and Matthew Macfadyen, as well as cast members Betty Gilpin and Nick Offerman.
“Death by Lightning” is based on the book “Destiny Of The Republic” by Candice Millard. Whitford will appear in the series as Secretary of State James Blaine. Whigham will play Senator Roscoe Conkling.

When Andrew Karpen wants to convince a filmmaker to let him release their movie, he doesn’t blow them away by offering more and more money. For one thing, Bleecker Street, the indie studio he founded in 2014, doesn’t have the financial firepower of an Apple or a Netflix.
“Our pitch is always centered around the kind of experience that they will have with us, knowing that we will be collaborative and transparent,” Karpen says. “I always say, ‘This is not a campaign where you will just be emailed the final poster and trailer and given two tickets to the premiere.’”
And over nearly 70 films, that openness has kept Karpen and his small but mighty staff in the game. While Bleecker is celebrating its 10th anniversary, many of its competitors haven’t managed to survive in a business that’s only become more treacherous to navigate. Several of Bleecker’s contemporaries,...

Viggo Mortensen would be older than Ian McKellen was when he played Gandalf if he appears in the new Lord of the Rings movie. Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will feature director Andy Serkis returning as Gollum, which could mean other characters will return. Mortensen's age may complicate Aragorn's appearance, but he would have to play the role in order to maintain character continuity.
If Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum features Viggo Mortensen reprising his original role as Aragorn, he will be older than Ian McKellen when he originally played Gandalf. Although he had been working since the mid-1980s, Mortensen had his breakout role when he brought the iconic character Aragorn to life in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, which premiered between 2001 and 2003. Since then, he has appeared in a variety of major projects including three titles that earned him Oscar nominations,...
