Surprisingly Good
bignat-0696811 October 2015
When watching a movie, I look for a couple of things that make the movie worth watching: Is it keeping my attention or boring me, Would I be willing to watch it again, just to name a few. Well, although the beginning didn't look promising, the movie actually turned out to be good. The actors were correctly picked for their parts and were very convincing. The brothers interacted well, and I eventually got that good feeling I was looking for. I felt very satisfied that the movie left no questions unanswered. I would watch it again as I feel their were some things that might have been missed first time around. I give it a solid 7 out of 10. Enjoy!

Nice Canadian film
elias-j-takacs7 February 2016
Watched this on a plane back from Winnipeg. The great Canadian experience, visit Winnipeg, then watch a movie about 2 guys stuck in the Rockies.

Although some parts of it is very typical Canadian, they do try to make it relatable to non-Canadians by adding a couple of interesting characteristics to each of the main characters in the movie. And I think they were on the right path but could have done more with it...become even more adventurous with the plot and explore the themes of fatherhood, wilderness, success (and failure), and in general the human condition.

But that might have compromised the realism and the message of real danger in situations such as this (which is very real). Canadian wilderness is very beautiful but can be dangerous as well if you're not properly prepared.

It's better than what you might think.

This isn't some goofy comedy like Black Sheep or Tommy Boy. Sure there's some funny parts but overall it's a drama/comedy. And it's actually pretty good.

Family drama meets survival
fandomfatale19 January 2022
This was more serious than what I thought I was in for. While I would have preferred something that was pure comedy with a bit of estranged brothers reconciling, this was a good movie that I thought handled mental illness in a very striking and interesting way. I was entertained and really liked the ending.

Not a Comedy!
supermodelyum7 January 2022
I think this movie would have played better if it hadn't been classified a Comedy/Drama. It took a while to adjust. But as Dramas go, it wasn't a bad film.

Yes, in this day and age it might be somewhat predictable. But it was a story worth telling. It's a movie with no agenda other than to convey simple messages like; Family is important and even a supposed "loser" like Topher can rise to the occasion when called upon.

a little bit
SnoopyStyle14 December 2020
Toph Pollard (Tyler Labine) is a weed dealer. His brother Cooper (Chace Crawford) is visiting for their mother's wedding. The brothers head up to the family mountain cabin to kick out a squatter. They are both dealing with issues and their resentments bubble up as things get out of hand.

There is a genre switch in the middle. The first half is a rather sparse family comedic drama. Labine tries to do a little comedy. It's a limited indie and then it turns into a survival adventure. That has some fun and thrills. This movie has a little bit of humor and a little bit of adventure. It's a little bit.

Ok.... kinda dull
andysfatpants14 March 2020
This movie was ok, but nothing more than that. I see some rave reviews here and I'm wondering if they're fake. I also see some people saying it's a comedy?? Huhhh. It's definitely not a comedy movie. I don't know what movie they watched.

It's a drama about 2 adult brothers dealing with life problems, family issues, and growing up/maturing into adulthood. They work out their issues, grow and evolve over the course of a weekend in the mountains.

There is some mild action that takes place, but overall not very thrilling. Chace Crawford is pretty to look at, but nothing exciting or romantic happens. And he's bundled up in winter gear the whole movie, so no sexy shirtless scenes either.

Production value was decent. Acting was fine. But overall, this movie was pretty dull to watch. And despite the attractiveness of Chace Crawford... there wasn't much charisma happening either. Neither brother made you want to care about their character.

Overall, it was ok. If you have nothing else to watch or feel like watching something boring then this will due. But definitely nothing thrilling here. I wouldn't watch it a second time, that's for sure.

Small budget Canadian film does good
StevePunchard13 February 2022
I didn't know I was about to watch a Canadian film but right there, in the first scene, the talk is about going to Kelowna for an abortion. No American would know where Kelowna is, but I as a Canadian certainly do.

Shot in Revelstoke (the extreme skiing capital of this country), the scenery is fantastic. BTW: if you don't know what province I'm talking about yet (or what a province is), you're not from around here.

It's all about how 2 brothers initially perceive each other, one supposedly a looser and the other supposedly successful, and how that changes as the truths to come out being stuck together. Turns out the successful one has a few downfalls while the looser has many undiscovered strong qualities.

What makes the movie interesting is the successful guy keeps thinking he's right about everything even when he's blatantly proven wrong. The looser takes some big chances that prove to be the right moves like lowering his brother down a cliff. If I were the one being lowered I'd be freaked out too.

In the end, they truly are brothers and not so far off. Worth the watch where only a few have watched.

Unfunny and predictable to the point of boringness.
PeterLormeReviews24 January 2017
Mountain Men (2016) is unfunny and predictable to the point of boringness. This film is so insubstantial that it is hard to talk about. Nothing here is worthy of conversation really. The same exact plot line has been done countless times. There were no moments of suspense or doubt, as every single thing could be seen from a mile away. Both the acting and directing are passable, but the film suffers tremendously from being too cliché. The message that is trying to be portrayed is not only extremely obvious but it is repeatedly shoved down your throat. The consistently flat jokes never seem to get any funnier or even better. 'Mountian Men' is hardly entertaining and is not worth the time spent watching it.

Mountain Men is a dramedy about two estranged brothers who are seeing each other for the first time in three years. One brother, Cooper (Chace Crawford), lives a high-profile life in New York City, while the other brother, Toph (Tyler Labine), is still in the same small town the two grew up in in Canada. While Toph finds out his girlfriend is pregnant, Cooper is dealing with the aftermath of his breakup of his own relationship. When the two of them become stranded in the mountains after an unfortunate incident involving a fire, they must learn to work through their differences and survive the snowy mountains. What follows is a funny and heartwarming story about coming to terms with life and the secrets that come between families.

Movie Renamed: "Unfunny Snow Dummies"
fredgfinklemeyer20 December 2018
12/19/2018 New movie description: Two turds drive to snowy mountain cabin, get lost in Antarctica. Director and writer allow them to survive with movie happy ending. Who woulda thunk? Pointless, NEVER funny intended for small minds and other modern day munchkins. Not for sensible, intelligent movie lovers. A 5 star rating is being overly kind. Watch if you must, It's a movie, that about says it all. Bon Appetit

A film so moronic that it would probably even insult Joey Essex's intelligence
jimbo-53-1865115 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Two estranged brothers Cooper (Chace Crawford) and Toph (Tyler Labine) are reunited following their mother getting remarried. After the wedding, the two brothers decide to head up to their father's isolated cabin so that they can attempt to catch up and bond. However, when they try to leave the next day they discover that their vehicle won't start and decide that the best way to get their vehicle going is to try and thaw the vehicle out. A disastrous attempt to achieve this objective results in their vehicle still failing to start and their cabin burning down. This leads to the brothers trying to survive the harsh winter temperature with no food, no shelter and very little warmth...

I'm prepared to cut this film some slack and admit that it's hard to make a survival film without some flaws; hell I'll be damned if there's a perfect survival film out there, but this film is so stupid that it really does go beyond a simple case of 'suspending disbelief'.

Towards the end of the picture, Toph rings their mother to inform her that him and his brother are in trouble - quite why they didn't use the mobile phone at the start to ring her or even a breakdown company at the start is never explained? Surely most people would make sure they have full breakdown cover during a cold winter as your car is more likely to break down during the winter months (I live in England so I know all about cold starting problems in winter). It seemed to be another stupid and illogical contrivance that existed merely to try to create tension (which I'll hasten to add didn't work), but made absolutely no sense. If you have a mobile phone and you're in a perilous situation then why wouldn't you use it?? Even if you've got no credit, these days you could probably ring the emergency services and they could probably pinpoint your exact location from your mobile phone signal so again it never makes any sense.

Things get more ridiculous later in the film when Toph happens to stumble across a road by chance and manages to flag down a Highways Patrol Vehicle. OK you may class that as good fortune and perhaps it was, but it does beg the question as to why the 2 brothers were unable to find a road previously when they were walking round in broad daylight? Why didn't they head back down the road that they originally came up? Alright Cooper said they should head up a mountain as he knew there was a place to stay, but surely you'd have had better odds flagging a vehicle down on a road. I admit this aspect of the story puzzled me, but I was initially prepared to overlook it in the hope that the film would have had a fast-paced sense of urgency about it which it clearly doesn't and because of this it makes the holes in the story stand out all the more.

It's interesting that we later learn that their father died in the middle of nowhere from cramp which only confirmed my initial thoughts that stupidity must run in the family. We never really learn what was going on with their father and why he was wandering around in the middle of nowhere? Then again I gave up trying to understand this film by about the halfway point and just soldiered on valiantly to the end.

I'm prepared to acknowledge that this film is good on very odd occasions (some exchanges between the brothers are quite touching and I liked the way that Toph showed his 'good side' by looking after Cooper after he breaks his leg (although you have to get past lots of irritating dialogue to get to these brief good bits). In truth, Mountain Men is badly paced, and not particularly exciting or suspenseful. However, what really kills it is large portions of the plotting which are just moronic and are insulting to the intelligence.

Well worth a look
peter wheeldon15 May 2016
Bought this on Netflix and pleased we did. Well chosen cast played things naturally which, with the restrained unflashy directing, made great use of the atmosphere and amazing location.

Chace Crawford and especially Tyler Lebine do an excellent job of carrying the movie, which is 90% a two hander.

It has some laugh out loud moments which I won't spoil and a nice set up and exploration of family tension. Overall a good movie and one I would recommend.

It also does the Canadian tourist industry no harm, as we want to visit now!

A Must See Dramatic Comedy!
summermarie249329 February 2016
After seeing Mountain Men I felt as though I was put up against the elements to fight for survival. The Director, Cameron Labine, did an amazing job of engrossing the viewer and bringing the film to life. The cinematography was breathtaking and the acting done by Chace Crawford and Tyler Labine was riveting. The way the Canadian Scenery was captured made me feel as though I was in the wilderness. As well due to both actors' performances, the estranged family dynamic was easy to follow and relate. Apart from the drama in the film, a comedic side was also prominent throughout. There was a nice balance of drama and comedy. It had me laughing but also on the edge of my seat. Tyler Labine, known for his comedic roles, adds comedy to the film but also does an amazing job of bringing out a dramatic side, which is not often seen. Overall the film was great and I recommend it to anyone seeking a drama with comedic relief that deals with family struggles and a story of survival.

Nice Canadiana
smbooth7 December 2015
Watched this on the plane ride back from Toronto. What a surprise! Unique plot, great acting and awesome scenery! Wasn't sure if it would keep me awake on the flight or not, but it sure did (which was a good thing!). Although the plane rated it as comedy/drama, I would have to disagree... drama all the way. Thank goodness for Canadian content! The two main actors did a great job. They remind me of two famous Hollywood actors, I'm sure you'll know who I mean... I mainly came to IMDb to see who the actors were and where it was filmed, but then decided that this film needed another review! I will be sure to watch more of the Canadian films when on my next flight. I encourage you to do the same.

Great movie!
rachelhaas13 March 2016
Mountain Men is one of the funniest survival films I've seen to date! Starring Tyler Labine, as Toph, and Chace Crawford, as Cooper, the film blends together a perfect smattering of humor and heartfelt moments. Despite the often quiet, contemplative turns the film takes, I was left in stitches all the way through. In the wake of their father's disappearance, the two brothers embark on an unexpected journey of reconnection. The conclusion of which left me feeling satisfied; the kind of satisfied that reminds me to call my brother and let him know that I love him. Real-life brother and director Cameron Labine did a wonderful job of bring this film to life. The cinematography is breathtaking and perfectly captures the isolation of being lost in the snowy wilderness. The beautiful Canadian outdoors acts as a stunning backdrop to the emotional rapport that builds between the brothers as they come to terms with the loss of their father. Smart, heartfelt, and funny, this film is a much watch!

An eye-opening comedy!
taylorseaytorchlight16 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
It is not usual for a comedy to keep me on the edge of my seat, wondering what disaster will happen next, but that's the exact effect that Mountain Men had on me. Director Cameron Labine's particular execution of the dramedy genre could not have been more entrancing. Combine his creative eye with the impeccable acting of young actors, Tyler Labine and Chace Crawford, playing estranged brothers Toph and Cooper respectively, and you get a next-level survival film that embodies laughter, love, and the pursuit of happiness. The question on the brothers' minds throughout the film is, "What does it mean to be a man?" This dive into the masculine psyche made for a very unique addition to the already manly nature of the "roughing it" outdoors theme. Director Labine did an admirable job of capturing the truthful concept that all humans have internal struggle in the world around them. The journey that Toph and Cooper experience together not only brings them closer as family, but brings each of them closer to their real selves.

Not Like Any Other Comedy
elizabethfranklin612 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
One word: Hilarious. A better one? Meaningful. This is not like most comedies I've seen… usually I hate comedies but Mountain Men was actually pretty good!! The script was not cheesy and the plot centering around a city boy that comes home to his country brother—and the two of them trying to work together—was unexpected in a great way. This film is a lot better than most on the big screens because of the connection between the brothers and the measures they take to survive together—that definitely makes it. Films with adult siblings are always deeper to me because of the underlying history between the kids, and this film is no exception. The concept of their deceased father communicating with them in the present, one newly pregnant girlfriend and another missing in action, and the intricacies of their relationship after so many years apart definitely brought some insight to me.

Through a series of events, a good hearted older brother proves his adoration and devotion to his younger brother.
lambertdavid25 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Mountain Men is a story of two brothers that have grown apart through time, They both grew up in a small mountain town with relatively harsh winters. The youngest chose a different path and sought out the city life in New York, while the elder brother seems to be in a small town rut, which is amplified by the news he is to be a father.

The two brothers are reunited when their father dies, and mother remarries. The elder brother seems to be more open to strengthening their brotherly bond, and goes out of his way to spend time at their late fathers cabin in the mountains.

After the cabin and truck were burnt up through a series of "go figure" moments. Without phone communication, and weather and time against them, the pair decide to hike to the emergency shelter in order to stay warm.

The movie gets more dramatic when the younger brother breaks his leg and needs medical attention. The oldest decides to weather the elements, in a good-hearted effort to help his brother asap. The goofy bonding excursion shifts into a story physical and mental tests; all believable.

The brothers take advantage of their late fathers pre-cautionary survival guide in particular circumstances that bring a pleasant, comforting feeling to the brothers. Moments of clarity, confusion, and acceptance ultimately bring the brothers closer together, and gives the youngest the peace he needs with his fathers death.

The film is provides subtle humor and realistic problems that are solved appropriately, which makes it enjoyable and believable. Very well casted, and no complaints about the acting. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and the message was a pleasant one.

A Lovely Heartwarming Movie
slouchpotato1 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Absolutely wonderful! One of the best movies I have seen in years.

Let's face it most movies these days don't even try and 80 percent are horror stories about vampires and werewolves.

This movie reminds us of what family means. Touches on a bond between brothers, growing up, responsibilities and survival skills. Topping it all off with the breathtaking beauty of the wilderness. Beautiful shots of the Rockies.

I especially love Tyler Labine since I saw him in this, Best Man Down, and Someone Marry Barry.

I think if you go into this movie with an open mind, not paying attention to reviews - either good or bad, you will be pleased you took the time to watch.

This movie was so inspirational. It showed the human condition and what even the weakest person can accomplish when their life or a loved ones life is on the line. This movie deserved well earned recognition, a million percent. These 2 men made this movie. They portrayed these roles amazingly.

It works! It's even on-parr with my favorite non-fiction storylines like the "I Shouldn't Be Alive" series.

Warning: Spoilers
These two seemingly dissimilar siblings went up the mountain, screwed up repeatedly and hilariously, but then it got serious and life threatening. Before that happened, I really didn't see it coming and never guessed how it would play out, and by the end of the movie I believed that those two were men now. Well done!
