Erica Tremblay, the Native American filmmaker who made her directorial debut with the Sundance title Fancy Dance, starring Lily Gladstone of Killers of the Flower Moon fame, has signed with CAA for representation.
The filmmaker, from the Seneca-Cayuga Nation, worked on FX series Reservation Dogs as a writer and director. Tremblay saw Fancy Dance, after a year’s delay, get picked up by Apple Original Films after its Sundance premiere and ahead of a release in theaters and on Apple TV+ later this year.
Set in northeastern Oklahoma’s Indian Country, Fancy Dance is based on Tremblay’s original screenplay co-written with Miciana Alise and centers on a young woman’s disappearance from a reservation and her family’s urgent attempts to locate her.
In Nov. 2023, Tremblay and Alise co-wrote a guest column for The Hollywood Reporter talking about the film’s struggle to find distribution. “Our film premiered in...

Paris-based TeamTO – one of Europe’s leading kids’ entertainment companies – is investing in new IP projects to broaden its global reach, while pioneering green production techniques that have set the standard for the French animation sector.
The company, with a capacity of up to 700 staff, has developed a high-end production pipeline, primarily catering to kids animation series, such as the Emmy-nominated “Angelo Rules,” “Jade Armor” and “Behind the Beats,” as well as servicing third-party series, ranging from Hasbro’s “Kiya & the Kimoja Heroes” to Netflix hit “The Creature Cases,” recently nominated for an Annie award and a Kidscreen award.
In a fast-changing market, impacted by strikes, narrowing ad revenues and cut-backs at streamers and broadcasters, TeamTO’s strategy is based on investing in high-quality IP projects and pursuing strategies to build their international brand recognition.

Located in the very heart of Tinseltown itself, Hollyshorts is a key event in the short film awards calendar. As an Oscar-qualifying event, the Hollywood-based short film festival often acts as a bellwether for the awards season to come. With a wide plethora of shorts and plenty of prizes up for grabs, it was a programme that I simply couldn’t wait to dive right into. Split between American films that show off the diversity of the grand, complex melting pot of a nation and international efforts, from Italy, Israel, Malaysia and Sweden, varying wildly in tone, style and intention, the following selection of ten shorts is a testament to the very strong curatorial focus of the programming team. While often skewing more conventional than other short film festivals, the stories on show here are sure to provoke strong, visceral emotions, from real tearjerkers to laugh-out-loud comedies to tense thrillers.

Filmmaking partners Tsvetelina Zdraveva and Jerred North’s short animated drama Yellowbird sees a young Bulgarian immigrant living in New York when she receives news of a family tragedy overseas. From here, she must reconcile with her grief and decide whether or not to risk her legal status in order to return home. It’s interesting watching this play out and to think of the implications it has both before and after the Covid-19 pandemic as, whilst it is a story specific to the immigrant experience, it also makes a wider comment on the rules and regulations of a national legal system that forces separation between loved ones in times of turmoil. Dn is delighted to share the trailer below – the full film is available to watch on HBO Max as part of their Only You animated shorts collection – next to a discussion we had with the co-directors about their journey into animation,...

Encapsulating humanity’s weighty history and paths toward healing, director Véra Belmont (“Red Kiss”) takes a leap from live-action cinema to animated feature with her latest project, “My Father’s Secrets,” a Holocaust story that tackles generational familial trauma and redemption.
Based on the graphic novel “Second Generation” by Israeli illustrator Michel Kichka, the film is set for its market premiere at the Cannes Marché du Film, with the incentive for international markets of Elliott Gould leading the English voice cast.
“My Father’s Secrets,” set in Belgium, introduces two young brothers, Michel and Charly, who struggle with their father Henri’s reclusive nature surrounding his time at Auschwitz.
Their imaginations get the better of them as their father retreats inward on a personal journey to recoup his life after surviving the tragedies of internment. They hypothesize, snoop and act out in response, causing familial friction.

Chapman, who recently left UK distributor Kaleidoscope after six years, will serve as COO while Crowe will be acting CEO. The latter will continue to run his sales outfit Sc Films.

Brazilian director Ale Abreu’s The Boy and the World, about a child who heads to the city in search of his father, has won both the Crystal Award and Audience Award for the best feature-length film at the 38th edition of the Annecy International Animation Festival.
“The rising strength of Brazilian animation is confirmed. The Boy and The World’s double honours signal yet again the vitality of this cinematography,” said the festival’s artistic director, Marcel Jean.
It is the second year in a row that a Brazilian film has won the top prize. Last year, Luiz Bolognesi’s Rio 2096, capturing key periods in Brazil’s history though a man who lives for 600 years, clinched the Crystal for best feature.

Elizabeth Olsen is rapidly becoming a more widely known talent thanks to her performance in Legendary’s Godzilla, and this summer she’ll be back in a starring role for the indie drama Very Good Girls, alongside Dakota Fanning. The film premiered at Sundance 18 months back and it’s been gathering dust ever since, but Tribeca Film and Well Go Entertainment are finally unveiling it this summer, with an iTunes release followed by a next-day theatrical run. Now, the first trailer for Very Good Girls has hit the web.
In the film, directed by Naomi Foner, Olsen and Fanning star as college-bound friends who, after making a pact to lose their virginity over the summer, fall in love with the same street artist (Boyd Holbrook) and find themselves in conflict for the first time. Reviews out of Sundance weren’t terrible but also weren’t exactly warm, so this one...
