It's a Wonderful Life in France
richard-178710 April 2015
This isn't a cinematic masterpiece, but it's one very enjoyable movie.

It tells a story that American movies used to tell, decades ago, very movingly. The main character, Fred, has left the little town in the area around Lyon (famous for its food) where he grew up to become a famous gastronome in Paris. When he has to go back, one day, he first sees it as "un trou," a hole in the ground. But the longer he's there, the more he falls in love with it, and realizes it has great things to offer.

Jimmy Stewart in "It's a Wonderful Life," though not quite as sentimental.

France still produces movies like this. There is still a sense that the countryside, and small towns, still have something to offer that is lacking in Paris/big cities.

Do we still make movies like this? Do we still believe this? I wonder.
