- After a plane crash in the Amazon, Katy Perry befriends the animals and out-roars a tiger to become Queen of the Jungle.
- A big painted jungle-styled backdrop. Filmed in JungleScope. Well, obviously. Big letters announce the title. ROAR. The letters then get clawed to shreds, and we hear the ferocious roar of a tiger. A dowdy Katy's plane had crashed in the Amazon. There are only two survivors, Katy, who looks uncannily like Rosie O'Donnell in Los Picapiedra (1994), and her ineffectual self-absorbed husband, who vainly fancies himself as the intrepid adventurer. Katy is very much in his shadow, as he proceeds to lead her to safety. To no avail, for pussyfoot that he is, he quickly gets caught by the tiger. Leaving poor Katy to scurry frantically through the jungle running for her life, her dress tattered, and beset by the unwanted attention of a tarantula that dropped in on her. Thirsting for water, she has an unexpected run-in with the jaws of a whopper of a crocodile. Luminous eyes peer out at her from the jungle. And there is the mighty roar of the tiger hot on her heels. "I got the eye of the tiger, the tiger... Dance into the fire," the song echoes, mimicking Eighties hits. "Cause I am the champion, and you're gonna hear me roar!" She is resolute to overcome though, and quickly becomes adept at the jungle lifestyle, and before you know it, she's no longer a meek little wreath (I went from zero, to my own hero) but a jungle princess swinging from the vines and living it up with her animal friends. She even paints the elephant's toenails hot pink! There is of course still that last bastion of male dominance that has to be overcome, her confrontation with the tiger. But he is really just all roar with no real oomph behind all of it, and she beats the beast at his own game by making a louder noise than he does, and he cowers and backs down. He is now her bitch, placidly carrying her name tag like the devoted president of her fan club. Leaving her now as Queen of the Jungle. Camping out in style. With her tamed tiger pet.
The song has a melodious warble as a refrain, her jungle cry, which I won't try to imitate here as it couldn't do it justice, but Katy has the sweet vocal chords to pull it off.
It's all obviously about overcoming uncertainty, standing up for yourself and gaining the respect of others through self-reliance, all in a fun jungle adventure with a menagerie of wild animals, some obviously fake, others undeniably real, and all the time showing off Katy's appeal.
