I tried, lol. I REALLY tried.

I can't even believe some of these outlandish reviews of an, at BEST, mediocre film. I've seen high school productions more complex than this! To put this film in the same stratosphere as Hitchcock is laughable. Moreover, the "fantastic" camera-work would have achieved better results with a smartphone or dare I say, a Super 8. Not to mention, the 4 1/2 star Amazon Prime reviews from the 15 people (men) who reviewed it, clearly were only aroused by the unbearably awkward soft-core porn scenes. I WILL say, however, the glue or better yet, paste that hardly held this movie together was Glenda Morgan Brown. I happen to thoroughly enjoy indie films. In fact, I mostly prefer them. When you consider some of the BEST (in my opinion) indie films such as "Donnie Darko", "Lost In Translation", and of course "Reservoir Dogs", "At Granny's House" lacks substance and effort.

3 or 4 out of 10 at the most!
Lynkin15114 November 2015
I have no Idea how this film got rated so high. This should have been a 3 or a 4 at most. I wish I could have my 83 minutes back, but unfortunately my Girlfriend made me sit through the whole thing. I really thought the acting was horrible, but for a low budget movie I guess it was not the worst. But the point I'm trying to make here is that we would have never even picked this movie to watch if it wasn't for such the high rating that it got, of course which I know now not to trust the rating system anymore. But up until now that's what we have been using to pick the movies we want to watch, and I gotta say it's worked out pretty good so far. That's all I gotta say really. I would hope people start rating movies more accurately to what they should be.

Bed, Bath, and Beyond
nogodnomasters20 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Rebecca (Rachel Alig) is a caretaker who was hired to take care of Marion Rogers (Glenda Morgan Brown) an elderly slightly forgetful woman who likes her space. Rachel reminds her that, "I'm here to make your life better." They decide to do something fun my offering a free place to stay for travelers at a web site "Myfreebed.com." Rachel is annoyed by people who ignore Rachel by insisting on using their electronic device. They pay the ultimate penalty.

This is low budget light horror film. It lacks blood and gore. What hurt the film most was the lousy soundtrack plus the bad sound system. It made everything sound cheap and tinny and that effects the overall viewing experience. Acting wasn't that great either.

Guide: Sex and nudity (Rachel Alig-thank you) No swearing.

One of the worst movies I have ever seen
jtvviewerpublic14 November 2015
What is up with the 7.5 out of 10 ratings? I watched this because of that.

"Granny" is played by an actress who is about 55-65. She has lived in the house 63 years. Granny was no granny at all. The acting was absolutely horrible. The actors read their dialogue as if they had just read the line before they said it. No emotions whatsoever.

This was a horror movie? This was more of a very bad acting, poorly produced movie. I rated it a 1 out of 10. Don't waste your time watching this. You can always find something better to do.

Laundry Watch Paint dry Move the stove and clean under it.

Seriously, this was an absolute calamity and shouldn't even be considered a "movie". 1 out of 10 is pretty bad and won't even make Walmarts 99 cent dust bin.

Don't, just don't.
Gravedigger4126 January 2016
After i've watched this movie i really feel i should write a short helpful review. DON'T WATCH IT. I can't describe how bad it is, honestly. While i was watching i had only one question on my mind. Which is worse the plot, the acting or the directing? Still unanswered. I've seen some bad movies now and then, i'm usually neutral about them but this got out of hand. No action at all, 1 hour and a half i could have spent doing nothing. To be fair though, it had some moments that could make this movie work as an average comedy. For example while the couple was in bed they were seeing visions on the ceiling. For real, they actually did it twice. I laughed, that got me.

Place of death and love
TheLittleSongbird2 August 2018
Before those defending 'Granny's House' flame me for adding another negative review, this review is coming from somebody who did give 'Granny's House' a fair chance, saw the whole thing and with no prejudice towards the concept (which was actually pretty neat) and genre (actually have a high appreciation for it). Not somebody with a bias against indie/low-budget and watched the film wanting to hate it.

'Granny's House' just didn't do it (close to "do anything") for me, sad because it could have been decent and actually wanted it to be. By all means there are far worse films than 'Granny's House', of the genre, of similar budgets and in general, and don't think that it is a 1-star film. It just wasn't a good film either, liked the concept but it was not executed well on the most part at all.

There are positives. The music has some creepiness and fits reasonably well. There are some nice unsettling shots.

Most of the acting is poor, but Glenda Morgan Brown and Rachel Alig give one hundred percent and do provide moments of tension and scares.

Sadly that can't be said for everybody else, with the rest of the acting being emotionless. Bill Oberst Jr doesn't look like his heart was in it and goes through the motions. The worst case was indeed the actor for the son, an abominably wooden performance.

Creepiness only comes in spurts and tension and suspense are next to nil, thanks to a lot of ridiculousness, dull pacing and excessive predictability that there is just no freshness to the material. The story, taken far too seriously, seldom gets off the ground, momentum takes forever, and the dialogue is stilted throughout. The direction is confused and most of the photography is slapdash and will induce nausea.

In summation, weak but could have been much worse. 3/10 Bethany Cox

Pray you never get invited to Granny's House, or to watch it...or anything else to do with it
LovecraftLass14 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I don't even know where to start with At Granny's House. First, the good. There were some interesting shots of the sky and clouds that were quite beautiful. Bill Oberst Jr.'s character was all too brief because he was wonderful and interesting. Glenda Morgan Brown played her role well and was one of the more enjoyable characters. Rachel Alig had some great facial expressions that showed her emotions much better than the dialogue did. These things combined bumped it up a star to save it from being a one-star watch.

The rest of the movie was ridiculous. The dialogue was stilted and unnatural. I would have to watch Ms. Alig in another movie to tell whether or not this is a good sample of her acting talent. The dialogue and scene direction in At Granny's House was so awkward and blah that I honestly can't tell. I think Glenda Morgan Brown did the best she could with what she was given and her scenes (when her character wasn't written strictly as a prop for Ms. Alig) were often very enjoyable.

The pacing is fairly consistent throughout. It moves at a fairly brisk pace...until about the middle when it turns into a bit of gag-inducing soft-core porn. I say gag-inducing because there's zero chemistry between the two leads and it looks uncomfortably like those scenes were added just to show (and grab) some boob. Since I'm never really thrilled with sex in horror (movies and books) when it's unnecessary this may be something that won't bother other people. If you're watching for the boobies, rest assured, you will see them.

The sound design and soundtrack was just bad. For some reason they felt the need to enhance every single sound. Because by god we need to hear every time the couch squeaks, every foot step, every keyboard click. The soundtrack wasn't much better. The music wasn't outright terrible but it was unoriginal and overused. From the moment the character of Rebecca walks in she might as well have "I'm creepy!!" tattooed on her forehead because the music is not subtle about it. Even the blandest line is accentuated with music to make it sound fraught with meaning.

I honestly don't know what to say about the plot. Everything is so glaringly obvious that I'm not sure what I'd be spoiling. The only two real mysteries that are presented are never explained. I'm not sure if they were even supposed to be mysteries or if the plot just overlooked them. The first is why Rebecca is killing people to begin with. She apparently hates people who are rude and ignore others while on their phone. However, in the movie it seems to act as an intense trigger for her. Even though they get a plethora of people she only kills those who are rude, especially in the phone usage area. So it seems like there would be a reason or something at least. Nope. Never explained. What is also never explained is why 'Granny', out of the blue, decides to help cover their crime. And, oddly enough, from the first. Even before she knows there has been an actual crime committed she's covering. I was hoping for a skeleton (literally or figuratively) in Granny's closet. But no, nothing. I did get the feeling there may have been a plot point in there somewhere that they decided not to use. It's a shame, really. Granny was one of the better characters and if she had an interesting story I may have forgiven a bit more.

Between the wooden dialogue and nonsensical plot I cannot recommend this movie.

I am confused
mjsreg21 June 2016
The reason I am confused is that I can't see how this film got finance or distribution.

First off, the production is full of technical gaffs - not least in editing. In several places the film has been edited so that the dialogue does not match (or flow in any way) from one shot to another.

There are a few shots where it is obvious 'action' has been called as the actors suddenly go from their start positions into whatever interaction the shot calls for.

In some shots the actor(s) is left in one position and in the next shot the actor is in a different position or pose, even though it is supposed to flow as one.

The acting is strained at the beginning of the film - especially the actor who plays the son - although it does get slightly better as the film progresses - or perhaps I just didn't notice it anymore with so many technical issues and trying to figure out how the edits could possibly have been considered passable.

The whole film is like one big slapped together rush.

The only saving grace is Rachel Alig - who does quite a reasonable job of acting (against the odds I suspect) - and has several half naked scenes (although this seems to be something of a trademark of hers) - which in the end do nothing to alleviate the strain of watching this hacked together set of images.

At first I thought this was some king of home made video, or an experiment by first year film students, but apparently I was wrong. This was supposed to be a proper film.

Never mind. Whatever went wrong in this may be addressed by all those involved when they work on other productions. Hopefully they will see it as a learning curve - never to be repeated.

As for the story - well - it's just not worth going into.

Cool Concept, Mediocre Film With Terrible Editing!
icocleric6 April 2022
I really loved the concept behind this indie thriller/horror, but it did have its problems. Firstly the acting is a little stiff and off, and the editing makes that worse. The editing is actually really bad, and the flaws are there to see. Some details they thought about in the film, others it's like they skipped over a few things.

There's also a few pacing issues. The story could be a good one, but it ended up being a mediocre film overall. It also really didn't make sense that the older woman that was being cared for took zero convincing to join in on the murder.

It wasn't truly terrible, but there's a lot of room for improvement.

Hidden Creepy Gem
nickynickybad11 March 2016
Rebecca is hired to keep Marion company by her son. Marion resists the idea that she needs help. Rebecca is charming & breaks through her resolve.

She convinces Marion to post on a site that offers free rooms to traveling strangers. Meeting people is fun. Rebecca loves 'collecting' new friends.

Don't be fooled by the acting. The compelling plot & slow onset of dread overcomes all. A twisted dark story. These sweet ladies can't be trusted.

I am not a friend or family member. I gain nothing by this review. I just hate seeing worthy independent cinema slammed.

A different take on suspense genre
Badger-203 December 2017
It's impressive that this was made outside the constrained studio system. This is not your ordinary thriller. It has a bit of a slow pace but it's deliberate; one doesn't realize they're being drawn into the film until midway through. Rachel Alig plays a perfect, unfeeling sociopath, with utterly emotionless dead eyes; even when her manipulative character "smiles," her eyes don't. "Granny's House" does become almost a very dark comedy of sorts in its third act, and while this feature may not be for everyone, it's worth a look or two.

Entertaining, with some nice twists and turns
lesemahoney1 February 2016
I look thru the other reviews for this movie, and it just blows me away to hear so many negative comments about this film. It really makes me wonder if they watched this movie or not! Because of all the "haters" out there, I would like to give you my comments, because i HAVE watched this movie, and really enjoyed it.

Acting: very strong, overall. The guy who played granny's son is not the greatest, but he goes away after ten minutes. "Granny" is an amazing actress who really shines, as is Rebecca. Overall the cast was very strong.

Story: Very interesting. I don't want to give anything away, but i think this story has a very contemporary feel to it, and addresses a major social problem.

Suspense: Yeah, it's creepy!

Technical: I love the way this movie was shot--lots of interesting angles and lighting.

Music: really good, complimented the imagery very well.

To be honest, i think some people just like to criticize--i have no idea how anyone could give this movie less than 6 or 7 stars, and to give it one star is atrocious!

Small town has dark secrets
mayaexpeditions30 December 2015
Saw this movie at its amazing Hollywood Premiere. Love how creepy it is. More movies should have great Leading Ladies!! Wild how it twists and turns and all is a cool house. Surprising how long the sex scenes are. Glenda Morgan Brown who plays Granny delivers a wonderful performance, with lots of depth. Rachel Alig, the other leading lady who plays Rebbecca gave me the chills. It is great how she commands the screen. Ted is a clueless prick portrayed very well by Les Mahoney. Bill Oberest Jr. has such a strong presence, he rocks his scenes. Very different character played here by Bill, the horror star of this century.

Creepy Family with Twisted Suspense
trinkschiz28 December 2015
Good creepy fun - a suspenseful tale that takes aim at the idea of a "sweet little old lady," with strong performances particularly from Rachel Alig and Glenda Morgan Brown.

Writer-Director Les Mahoney has a feel for Hitchcockian atmosphere and characterizations. Working on a modest budget he achieves some of the tension missing from bigger Hollywood features.

Mahoney himself plays a love interest for Alig's caretaker character and his entrance into the film brings additional complications.

The script is loaded up with some great twists, including one final turn at the end. Enjoy!

AT GRANNY'S HOUSE--this ain't your "Grandma"!
gmbcanuck4 July 2015
AT GRANNY'S HOUSE is not for the faint of heart! It will take you on a thrill ride of twists and turns, sometimes keeping you literally on the edge of your seat. You know those commercials that say, "If you think you know...you don't know AARP"? Well, if you think you know "little old ladies", you don't know Granny! The film borrows style from the best of Hitchcock (you'll even see some "Birds"). Rebecca (Rachel Alig) arrives in the sleepy town of Haley somewhere in the mid-west, where she's been hired to be a live-in companion/caretaker for Marion, aka Granny (Glenda Morgan Brown). Granny resents the intrusion at first, but warms to Rebecca's kindness. A romantic interlude with a house guest (Les Mahoney) complicates matters...and I dare not say more. It's a thriller/love story--yeah,that's right. I guess you'll just have to see it to find out how those two genres go together!

Creepy, dark and scary!
lloydhanchew15 June 2015
This was a great movie! There were so many twists and turns, you just never knew what was going to happen next.

The movie had a great Hitchcockian feel, updated to the 21st century.

The movie looked great, and had great music too.

I was very impressed with the direction, and the acting was very strong too--especially Rachel Alig as Rebecca, Glenda Morgan Brown as Granny, Les Mahoney as Ted and Bill Oberst, Jr as Boarstag.

I don't want to give anything away, but suffice it to say that this one will keep you on your toes until the last scene! Check it out when you can.

Has a "Hitchcockian" feel to it
ranch70023 November 2015
This movie has a "Hitchcokian" feel to it. There's an interesting relationship between "Marion" & "Rebecca" and a rather sick little idea that they come up with and act out on. And then there's some other twists and turns that the movie takes from there. It's also shot in a way that moves the pace along nicely from start to finish. I have to say , a lot of people tend to be "haters" when it comes to Indie films, so I encourage most people to take that into consideration when they see negative reviews of Indie films like this. There's going to be a lot of people who just automatically hate it simply because it's low budget, similar to how some people hate all black & white movies because they're black and white or how some people hate all foreign films because they have subtitles and they just hate subtitles. So that's what is going on with so many indie bashing reviews. Please keep that in mind when browsing through those types of reviews. On the other side of the coin, if you're a fan of indie films, and thankfully there are more and more people becoming as such, this movie is definitely worth checking out. Give it a try. And I don't mean give it 5 minutes. I mean, sit down and give the movie a real chance to develop.

Taut Hitchcockian thriller!
les-4677423 November 2015
This is a taut character driven thriller that reminds me of the great Hitchcock films of the past.

The acting is great, especially Glenda Morgan Brown as Granny, and Rachel Alig as Rebecca, the caretaker with a dark secret. These ladies really rock the screen and own their parts.

But the acting is solid throughout: Les Mahoney as Ted is very good, and the "king of indie horror" Bill Oberst, Jr, plays against type as a relentless private detective. Their fight scene is memorable.

The story is very interesting, and there are some great twists and turns--especially at the end!

Indeed, the movie looks and sounds really good, and the images and the music work very well together.

Disregard the haters who wrote bad reviews of this film--some people just have to hate, right? Enjoy this special indie thriller.

An interesting psychological indi horror, made outside of the whole studio scheme.
Stellartoa2 May 2016
This is an interesting psychological indi horror, made outside of the whole studio scheme.

It is exactly the thing I like, because instead of following the same all usual type of formula, it gives a different more abstract solution. I believe that similar as in painting or music, such an approach to the same'all usual filmmaking is in fact crucial, as it gives us something new.

As a filmmaker and a painter my self, I appreciate when indi filmmakers have the courage to break some of the usual and overused formulas, that really haven't changed that much since the days of "Gone With the Wind" in 1939.

In my opinion, the seventh art of film is only some 130 years old, and is still a large frontier to be explored, hence the element of impressionism and abstraction is in fact something that should be welcomed, rather then praising the same'all over used and over done formula. That really in the last couple of decades of the overused CGI, has really become nothing more, then old and bland.

Cheers for the INDI film scene. Director, writer, actor Ivan Pavletic

Good movie, don't understand the 1 star reviews
dad-995549 July 2016
So there is a big difference of opinion on this movie. I really think it boils down to the expectations of the reviewers.

First, IMDb tends to have an audience that skews younger, and is more interested in explosions and gore than storytelling. This is NOT an explosions and gore kinda movie--it is a thoughtful, character driven thriller with a lot to say. To those who care to listen and think beyond the ordinary.

Second, and i have seen this on other "peer review" sites, there are always people who just want to hate on a movie and have their voice heard. I doubt they have any clue about how films are made, and so have little understanding of the process. The guy who went on and on about the bad editing, for example--funny, i did not see those problems, nor did anyone else mention them.

So my opinion is that this is an interestingly quirky thriller that really deserves people's attention- -not everyone will love it, but anyone who is being fair to the film will give it much higher than the one and two star ratings the younger set like to give.

Bottom line--i have never rated any movie less than a 3, and i have seen some horrible movies! In other words, i suggest you throw out the highs and the lows, and look at the ratings that more in the middle, where this strong indie thriller belongs.

Don't listen to the hate. There's too much of that out there as it is.

Decent thriller worth a watch!
davidjzellis11 July 2016
Got a chance to see this and thought pretty decent thriller is worth checking out! It is about an elderly lady named Marion (although I really believed they should have called her granny like come on man it's in the title) and her psychotic BFF caretaker. I like talking chances on movies like this as generally the filmmaker is willing to take more chances and this title did not disappoint. The scares and chills were in the right place and had fun taking a chance on it. Also if you are not sure to check it out yourself it has the title Granny in it s so it has to be an awesome horror movie (such as the classic masterpiece "Rabid Grannies"!)

Strong indie thriller
lemenos-118 January 2016
I found this to be a well-executed indie thriller that really brought together disparate ideas into a interesting and compelling story. Not really sure where the negative reviewers are coming from, I guess some people just have to hate.

The acting is generally very good, although Glenda Morgan Brown as Granny really stands out--she owns the part and really lights up the screen.

I thought the cinematography was exceptional, there were some beautiful shots that really made the movie interesting.

There were some very interesting surprises as well, especially the twist ending. What is going on in your small town?

What happens at Granny's stays in Granny's House
shagee79774 May 2018
"At Granny's House", Available on Amazon Prime, iTunes, and Vimeo (worldwide).

Writer/ Director Les Mahoney who also plays the lead is a Horror/ Thriller that's starts off as a normal movie, than quickly escalates to a bizarre who's who! A elderly Ladies son seeks a caregiver for his mom. Wanted to live his own life he settles on a young lady played deviously by the lovely and talented (Rachel Alig) that has all the answers and seems like the perfect women to care for his mom. The son has his bad packed and out the door before another word is said. At first the mom doesn't really care for her but soon grows to like and bond with her. Shortly after settling in she devised and idea to offer the basement to weary travelers Looking for free room and board. She convinces Marion the old lady about her idea and how wonderful it would be to meet new people! The boarders start checking and not checking out. This goes on till one day she falls for one of the passerby and his wife. She convinces him to be with her and he Joins her in her sick game. This movie has so many twists and turns, you never know what to expect or who to trust. There is plenty of very sensual scenes between the 2 main characters and you really get sucked into there demented twisted scheme. I am really impressed with everyone involved in this complex mystery. It is chilling and Rachel Alig is really captivating as the pretty psycho who has no conscience. I really want to see this young lady in more roles, she carried the movie and had you mesmerized. Glenda Morgan Brown as Granny was equally good and played her role with such substance, you really feel for her character and what she was going through! She felt abandoned and this young lady offered her companionship and friendship. She was no longer alone and had a constant friend. Being an Indy filmmaker who also did everything in his movie, I really respect Les Mahoney for taking not only the lead role, but also writting and Directing. He nailed each job perfectly. The chemistry between him and Rachel were realistically portrayed. I would like to see them reunite in another feature. I really enjoyed this and found it haunting and unsettling. If your into something different and not a color by number Predictable Slasher flick give this one a try. I fell in love with Rachel Alig, and loved her deliveries and performance. A must view!

Bill Oberst Jr., Rachel Alig Glenda Morgan Brown , Les Mahoney, Charles A. Baird, Bryant Watts and Laura Lee. Written/Directed by Les Mahoney
