Exclusive: Bac Films to premiere first images of Ellen Page-starrer at Efm.
Paris-based Sales company Bac Films has released a first image of Ellen Page in post Zombie era drama The Third Wave.
The drama - the first feature of Irish director David Freyne - unfolds in the aftermath of a devastating virus which transformed the infected into zombie-like monsters.
Mankind is struggling to rebuild societies deeply divided between the uninfected and those who did succumb to the virus and are still haunted by their violent actions.
In the backdrop, the rise of a terrorist movement threatens to plunge the world into chaos again.
Freyn directed from his own screenplay developed out of proof of concept prequel short The First Wave.
Bac Films will screen first footage on the first and second day of the Efm along fresh images from Paolo Virzi’s The Leisure Seeker and Babak Jalali’s Land.

Ellen Page will be taking on the lead role in a new zombie thriller called The Third Wave. The story has a unique twist in the zombie genre as it focuses on humans who have been transformed into zombies and then cured.
THR says that the story “is set in a time after a virus that transformed humans into zombie-like monsters has been cured. But many of the once-infected humans are now shunned by society and even their families, creating social unrest that leads to militant government interference.”
About 8 or 9 years ago, GeekTyrant co-founder Free Reyes and myself came up with the exact same concept, except there were more layers to it than this. While pitching the idea we were told that the zombie genre was dead. As you all know, that's not the case at all.
The movie is being directed by David Freyne, who will be making his feature film directorial debut.

Ellen Page is set to star in a new zombie thriller called The Third Wave.
Ellen Page has signed on to star in a new zombie thriller from David Freyne in his feature-length directorial debut. The movie is called The Third Wave and it's the story of a society that is recovering in the aftermath of a zombie outbreak. After the virus is seemingly cured, the once-infected are discriminated against by the rest of the society. As you might expect, this causes all kinds of issues to the point where the military has to be brought in to restore order. In a way, the movie is about the exact social unrest and injustice the genre is designed to comment on through an undead metaphor.

David Freyne will direct from his own screenplay set in the aftermath of a devastating virus that has gripped the continent for six years, transforming humans into zombie-like monsters.
A cure has been found but society is divided into those who were once infected, and committed terrible violent acts, and those who never contracted the virus.
In the backdrop, the rise of a terrorist movement, fuelled by the deep divisions, threatens to plunge the region into chaos again.
“Thoughtful approach to horror”

Zombie movies are everywhere these days, and while we'll always have a soft spot for the walking dead in our cold, black hearts, it’s hard to shake the feeling that we’ve seen all there is to see in this particular subgenre. Then something like David Freyne’s The First Wave comes along and makes everything old seem somehow new again. Freyne’s film is the antithesis of Romero’s zombie cinema. Romero imagines a bleak future where a well-equipped human resistance can’t defeat the shambling hordes not because they lack the firepower and technology, but because we can’t put aside our differences and make a coordinated effort to kill the dead once and for all. The First Wave, on the other hand, posits that not only can the zombie menace...

Why Watch? First “The Infected,” now “The Cured.” Almost all zombie movies feel like a first act, which is probably why several have found success as franchises with multiple entries, but even then the story typically devolves into military madness and a society on the outs. This short from David Freyne imagines something very different: what if we defeated zombies with a vaccine, but those who return to the land of living still remember chewing into their neighbors’ cheeks? Launching from a compelling concept (that’s totally plausible) The First Wave is a contemplative story told through flashbacks and a nagging question from a doctor. But it’s not all floating, ethereal angst. The opening frames are a slap to the face, and creative framing (and a score that echoes a deep sense of loss) should keep your eyes wide open. It’s not a talky examination of an existential crisis. Instead...

Director David Freyne has seen the future and it's not friendly. No, the Irish director has released his short film The First Wave online and the film, which serves as a precursor to a proposed feature, posits a gritty and realistic take and the viral outbreak that leads to a zombie apocalypse.Following the outbreak of an aggressive virus, a young woman awakes in a hospital bed. As the horrifying events that led her there are revealed, it becomes clear that the cure is just the beginning. This is quality stuff and at just seven minutes long there's no compelling reason for you not to take the time to watch.
