Season one, which has a rare 100 score on Rotten Tomatoes and received seven Emmy nominations, averaged over 5 million weekly viewers across platforms and was the second-most streamed series in Showtime history. Showtime knows a hit when it has one.
The premium cabler announced today that the Emmy-nominated drama Yellowjackets has been renewed for a third season ahead of its second season.
The renewal is very early, but there's a good chance the cabler knew the show would continue to be a success story in its second season, which premieres starting Friday, March 24, on streaming and on-demand for all Showtime subscribers, before making its on-air debut on Sunday, March 26 at 9 p.m. Et/Pt.
When you have a hit like Yellowjackets, you want to lock down the in-demand cast to ensure the show can continue.
And, there's been quite a wait between seasons, so maybe this is also a tactic to have a shorter wait between seasons 2 and 3.

HBO Max is developing a dramedy about a murder trial that boasts Bill Lawrence among its executive producers, Variety has learned exclusively.
Titled “12 Rocks in a Box,” the series centers on Suzannah Weaver, who is described as “a self-described ‘Murderista’ obsessed with true crime.”
Per the official logline, Suzannah is “thrilled to find herself on a jury for a high-profile Las Vegas murder trial. But Suzannah soon begins to suspect that not all is as it seems with this case, and a DIY investigation leads her to believe that the killer may indeed be in the courtroom every day…and it isn’t the man on trial.”
Todd Berger will write and executive produce the project, with Sherri Cooper Landsman and Jennifer Levin also executive producing. Bill Lawrence, Jeff Ingold, and Liza Katzer of Doozer Productions will also executive produce. Warner Bros. Television will produce, with Doozer currently under an overall deal at the studio.

After receiving some of the best reviews of his career for his role in Apple’s Black Bird series, Taron Egerton looks to have found his next feature project. He is set to star in the Netflix and Amblin action thriller Carry On, with Jaume Collet-Serra on board to direct. Tj Fixman penned the first draft of the screenplay, with Michael Green doing the most recent polish. Dylan Clark will produce. The film marks the first production to come out of the overall deal Amblin signed with Netflix last June.
The thriller centers on Ethan Kopek, a young Tsa agent who gets blackmailed by a mysterious traveler to let a dangerous package slip through security and onto a Christmas Day flight.
Holly Bario, Amblin’s president of production, will oversee the project on behalf of the studio. Brian Williams will exec produce via Dylan Clark Productions as will Scott Greenberg and Seth William Meier.

Legendary duo Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith first reached global recognition with the highly acclaimed The League of Gentlemen, followed by the similarly bizarre Psychoville in 2009 which was also a hit, albeit a less favourable one than its predecessor. Then in 2014, the pair masterminded one of the most supreme television shows in existence – Inside No.9.
Inside No.9 embodies a lot of interesting concepts throughout, with a combination of satire, dark comedy and chilling horror, with all stories somehow relating to the number 9. Each episode has its own standalone, individual storyline, but they do all have one thing in common (apart from the number 9). Their very dark, very chilling and very killer twist endings.
The anthology show is definitely one of a kind, with it creators using innovative ways to tell their dark, emotionally driven stories with the majority being told in non-linear techniques. Each episode always endeavours to leave the...

In service to the director’s vision on a project, production designer Nelson Coates is an artistic pied piper. “You want to [construct] a visual arc and take people on that journey,” he says.
Having scoured locations in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand for Jon M. Chu’s “Crazy Rich Asians,” the two reunite for “In the Heights.” This time the job was to find areas in Washington Heights that represented the area’s diversity. “You’re trying to do a deep dive into a specific culture, food, furniture, art — the things that are held so dear [locally] that they’re just as important to the storytelling process,” Coates says. The neighborhood includes a mix of Puerto Rican, Dominican and Cuban influences. “So,” the designer continues, “helping delineate those cultures and also making them germane to what you see in Washington Heights was very important to the story.”

Grey’s Anatomy alum Patrick Dempsey is returning to broadcast television as the star and executive producer of Ways & Means (fka The Whip), a Washington DC drama, which has been picked up to pilot by CBS. The project comes from former Seal Team showrunner Ed Redlich, Republican political consultant Mike Murphy, Nina Tassler and Denise Di Novi’s PatMa Productions and CBS TV Studios.
Written by Murphy and Redlich, Ways & Means centers on a powerful Congressional leader (Dempsey) who has lost faith in politics. He finds himself working secretly with an idealistic young Congresswoman from the opposing party to subvert the hopelessly gridlocked system he helped create; together, they’ll attempt to save American politics… if they don’t get caught.
Dempsey and Murphy executive produce with Tassler and Di Novi via PatMa and Tom Lassally of 3 Arts. Dempsey’s manager, Joannie Burstein, serves as co-executive producer.

It’s been 11 years since Michael Bay took the reins of the live-action “Transformers” movies, and in that time he has infused these films with a particular, cacophonous audio-visual aesthetic that has more in common with a rollercoaster at a rave in a war zone than what we would otherwise consider conventional, cinematic storytelling. His approach has its fans, but with “Bumblebee,” we can finally see what a filmmaker other than Michael Bay could do with the concept of alien machines that transform into stuff.
And it turns out they could do wonders.
“Bumblebee,” directed by Travis Knight (“Kubo and the Two Strings”), is the best “Transformers” movie so far, going all the way back to the 1986 animated film. And although one could argue that that’s a relatively low bar, since narrative coherence and recognizable character development are all it really takes to best its predecessors, saying so is...

After Joss Whedon's sudden departure, Warner Bros. and DC believe they have found the writer to resurrect the Batgirl film! More within...
Last year, everyone was stunned to find out that Joss Whedon was working on bringing a Batgirl story to the big screen. Screenwriter Christina Hodson has taken over to write a new script for DC’s “Batgirl” film, following the announcement that Joss Whedon is no longer attached to the project, Variety has learned.
This will mark Hodson’s return to the DC Extended Universe after writing for The WB series “Birds of Prey.” Hodson previously wrote the screenplay for horror film “Shut In” with Naomi Watts and Jacob Tremblay and the 2017 thriller “Unforgettable” starring Rosario Dawson. Hodson has also been tapped to write the script for “Bumblebee,” the upcoming “Transformers” spinoff with Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena.
Whedon exited the comic book movie in February, citing story issues. Whedon said in a statement, “’Batgirl’ is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story.”

Welcome to the “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s upcoming wide-release movies. Last weekend Pacific Rim: Uprising took down the long-time box office king, Black Panther, with an impressive $28 million haul. Tyler Perry’s latest, Acrimony, also debuts with Taraji P. Henson in the lead role.

Halle Berry is one of the few Hollywood superstars to have the guts to show up at the Razzie Awards in person to accept their trophy, something that audiences members ate up like catnip. Berry appeared at the 25th Golden Raspberry Awards in 2005 after “winning” Worst Actress for “Catwoman” (2004), and she brought along a very special accessory: her Best Actress Oscar for “Monster’s Ball” (2001). “First of all I want to thank Warner Bros,” Berry remarked at the podium. “Thank you for putting me in a piece of s***, god-awful movie!” Watch the video above.
“I never in my life thought I would be up here winning a Razzie,” Berry told the excited crowd while feigning excitement. “I mean, it’s not like I ever aspired to be here. But thank you!” Holding up her Oscar, Berry then joked, “No, I don’t have to give this back — it’s got my name on it!

Two sequels, “Transformers: The Last Knight” and “Fifty Shades Darker,” lead the nominations for the 38th annual Razzie Awards with nine and eight bids respectively, followed by “The Mummy” with seven. These kudos, honoring the worst of moviemaking, will be handed out by the Golden Raspberry Foundation on March 3 (one day before the Oscars) in a virtual ceremony.
The Razzies front-runner for Worst Picture is “The Emoji Movie,” which would be the first animated film to “win” that award. We are predicting that Tom Cruise (“The Mummy”) and Jennifer Lawrence (“Mother!”) will be cited for their bad acting in starring roles while Russell Crowe and Kim Basinger will be similarly singled out for their ham-fisted performances in featured turns in “The Mummy” and “Fifty Shades Darker.”

One day before she became a Best Actress Oscar winner for “The Blind Side,” Sandra Bullock took home another major Hollywood trophy: the Razzie Award. Bullock “won” Worst Actress for her performance in “All About Steve” and even made a rare appearance at the Razzies ceremony to accept the prize. “I didn’t realize that in Hollywood that all you have to do is say you’ll show up and then you get it,” Bullock told the room full of excited Razzie voters. “Because had I known that, I would have said I was appearing at the Oscars a long time ago.” Watch the video above.
Bullock feigned happiness at being named the winner, then suggested that Razzie members didn’t really watch “All About Steve” before voting for her. “I wouldn’t be here if you really, really watched it and understood what I was trying to say,” she chastised the crowd.
