Bankside Films, CAA represent family drama in Cannes.
Octavia Spencer will join Jim Parsons and Claire Danes in the drama A Kid Like Jake from That’s Wonderful Productions.
Bankside Films will commence international sales in Cannes on the film that will shoot this summer in New York, while CAA is handling North American sales.
Based on his Lincoln Center Play, A Kid Like Jake was adapted for film by Daniel Pearle and will be directed by Silas Howard.
On the eve of the admissions cycle for New York City kindergartens, Alex and Greg Wheeler have high hopes for their son Jake, a bright and precocious four-year-old who happens to prefer Cinderella to GI Joe.
Aware they can’t afford private school tuition, Judy, the director of Jake’s preschool, encourages them to accentuate Jake’s ‘gender variant’ expression to help him stand out and try to get a scholarship.

‘The Witch Queen’ in The Last Witch Hunter.
The Witch: I’m not a witch, I’m not a witch!
Sir Bedevere: But you are dressed as one!
The Witch: *They* dressed me up like this!
Crowd: We didn’t! We didn’t…
The Witch: And this isn’t my nose. It’s a false one.
Sir Bedevere: [lifts up her false nose] Well?
Peasant 1: Well, we did do the nose.
Sir Bedevere: The nose?
Peasant 1: And the hat, but she is a witch!
Crowd: Yeah! Burn her! Burn her!
– Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Throughout history, witches have always gotten a bad rap. The Salem Witch Trials proved that.
Things didn’t improve with the birth of cinema. Filmmakers have had a magical time telling the tales of sorcery, magical powers and witchcraft.
Good or bad, funny or downright scary, their stories have fascinated moviegoers and these burnt offerings show no signs of slowing down.

Picture it: Germany, 1989. (Yes, the first four words of this American Idol recap are inspired by The Golden Girls‘ incomparable Sophia Petrillo.)
Knight Rider star David Hasselhoff is performing a partial striptease in the one country that’s embraced his pop-star aspirations as warmly as they’ve accepted sauerkraut and spätzle on their dinner tables. He’s shaking what his mama gave him and belting some of the decade’s biggest hits: “Walking on Sunshine.” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.” “Let’s Dance.”
