Director Wes Ball refers to “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” the latest installment in the re-energized franchise, as something of a “soft reboot.” As a fan of both the original 1968 film with Charlton Heston as well as the more recent trilogy helmed by Matt Reeves, Ball was careful to hold on to the goodwill that this story already possessed. His approach then was to start a new chapter in an unexplored time period of this apocalyptic story. “I started thinking about it as, is there a way to almost bridge those two worlds together where you could start that step,” he explains, “that march towards that Charlton Heston reality.” Watch the video interview above.
“Kingdom” is set some 300 years after the death of ape leader Caesar (Andy Serkis) in “War for the Planet of the Apes.” The primates have developed a full spoken language, robust cultures, and Caesar is simply a legend.

Performance capture is one of the most exciting new tools available to filmmakers this century. But, if you’re an up and coming cinematic storyteller, how can you use it in your own filmmaking? IndieWire’s Future of Filmmaking Summit, taking place in Los Angeles on November 2 has you covered.
We are honored to welcome the team behind this year’s blockbuster smash, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” for a dynamic panel about the ins-and-outs of performance capture. At the heart of the conversation will be how they used these innovative tools to elicit profound emotion, to create deep connections between the film’s characters and the audience. Roger Ebert always said movies are an empathy machine: The performance capture artistry in “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” showed how true that is.

For the past four years, Chinese audiences haven’t shown much interest in Hollywood movies.
So, the breakout success of Disney and 20th Century’s “Alien: Romulus,” a gory sci-fi thriller that earns its R rating, has been a welcome surprise. The newest chapter in the long-running horror saga has been the rare bright spot among American imports with $82 million and counting in mainland China. It’s expected to reach $114 million (RMB819) by the end of its theatrical run, according to forecast from Chinese ticketing agency Maoyan.
So far, only one other 2024 U.S. title, the Warner Bros. tentpole “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” has managed to make a dent on China’s box office charts with $134 million. And in terms of Hollywood wins, those riches come with an asterisk because the monster mashup was produced by Chinese-owned Legendary Entertainment and distributed by the company’s China local unit Legendary East.

It has been a rough few years at the box office, to put it as mildly as one can. The pandemic completely upended the movie business as we know it, with theaters around the world shutting down entirely for months on end. Even after they reopened, the recovery has been much slower than expected. It certainly didn't help that last year's SAG and WGA strikes hugely impacted this year's output from Hollywood as well. It's been one thing after another. Amidst all of this, American studios have had to contend with one big, financially consequential truth: China can no longer be depended on to help goose ticket sales for blockbuster films.
For over a decade before the pandemic hit in 2020, Hollywood studios had been catering to Chinese audiences, even going so far as to self-censor films to help ensure that they could play in the country. At times, that paid off handsomely.

Giddy up! Paramount could add some coal to the Yellowstone Express furnace as talk of a sixth season comes over the ridge. Yellowstone Season 6 could continue Taylor Sheridan’s flagship series with Kelly Reilly (Beth Dutton) and Cole Hauser (Rip Wheeler) leading the charge. No concrete plans for Yellowstone Season 6 are in place. Still, Variety says the goal is to continue the story beyond the Yellowstone Season 5B finale, coming to Paramount+ on November 10.
Initially, Yellowstone’s end was in sight after Kevin Costner left the series to pursue his dream of filming his multi-part Western Horizon: An American Saga. Costner plays John Dutton for five and a half seasons of the fan-favorite show before falling out with Sheridan after Paramount decided to split the fifth season into two parts. Costner voiced interest in returning to the show to finish his character’s arc, but it was too late. Paramount rearranged schedules,...

The Madison is expanding its cast so find out who is joining the new Yellowstone spinoff!
Yellowstone fans are still in flux regarding the fate of the show. The massive Paramount TV hit has had some major upheaval with star Kevin Costner departing after problems with creator Taylor Sheridan. This has led to the upcoming second half of Season 5 being the last for the show.
There had been plans for a continuation with most of the cast and Matthew McConaughey as the new star, but that's still up in the air. However, the network is going ahead with The Madison, a new drama set in the same universe as Yellowstone.
The show focuses on "a heartfelt study of grief and human connection following a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana." It sounds like a classic cultural clash between the posh New Yorkers and the residents of the state.

A while back, we heard that the physical media release of the Maze Runner trilogy director Wes Ball’s addition to the Planet of the Apes franchise, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (read our review Here), would feature a version of the film that would allow viewers to see the motion-capture performances of the actors, before the CGI magicians turned them into their ape characters. Now 20th Century Studios has announced a date for the 4K Uhd, Blu-ray, and DVD release of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes: August 27th. And well before we reach that date, the movie will be receiving a digital release on July 9th.
A press release confirms that there will be a version of the film on the 4K Uhd that will allow viewers to see the actors’ performances with unfinished effects: “Fans can delve deeper into the franchise on 4K...

Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes Box Office (North America): Wes Ball’s Movie Scored Winning Numbers On Its Sixth weekend. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Bad Boys: Ride or Die and Inside Out 2 have stormed the box office with their fantastic performances, but the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is still hanging in there. It keeps earning, which has resulted in the film crossing a significant mark at the North American box office. Keep scrolling for more.
The film might not have raked in staggering numbers, but it is having a slow and steady run at the theatres. The collections have surely contributed enough to let the franchise cross the $2 billion milestone. The fourth installment in the Planet of the Apes reboot franchise began with Rise of the Planet of the Apes in 2011. Andi Serkis played the significant role of Caeser, but his story ended with War for the Planet of the Apes...

The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes might be set in the future, but it takes us on a trip to the past – to the era of Planet of the Apes, a movie where humans and apes have switched positions and the former is at the latter’s mercy. That isn’t the only way the movie is willing to turn the clock back – following in the same vein as its Planet of the Apes predecessors, the movie has managed to rock box office charts continuously. Its successful run at the Box Office means that it has already made its way into a special list of movies that hit the theatres this year.

Weekend Box Office: Inside Out 2 posts 2nd best animated opening; Bad Boys holds strong in 2nd place
After a rough start to the summer, we can finally say with some confidence that the box office slump is over – at least for the time being. Pixar’s sequel, Inside Out 2, blew away industry expectations (including ours) to post the second-biggest animated opening of all time, just behind The Incredibles 2, which opened with $182.6 million. With a $155 million domestic opening, it’s by far the biggest opening of the year and marks a strong return to form for Pixar Studios, who’ve suffered through a series of embarrassing flops since the pandemic decimated their release schedule. With an A CinemaScore rating, word-of-mouth on this one should be great, with it looking like it’ll do strong business over the next two weekends, with very little in the way of competition until Despicable Me 4 on the July 4th holiday weekend.

The first full weekend of June brought a modicum of hope to the summer box office, as Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reunited for the fourth installment of their popular “Bad Boys” action-comedy franchise. Read on for the weekend box office report.
“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” had been planned since 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life” became the highest-grossing blockbuster that year, partially due to Covid shutting down theaters a few weeks after its release. Opening in 3,885 theaters, including IMAX and other premium screens, “Ride or Die” received mixed reviews with 64% on Rotten Tomatoes, although it was expected to be fairly review-proof with the popularity of its two stars. It ended up making $5.88 million in Thursday previews beginning at 3pm, and $21.6 million on Friday, including those previews.
Sony is estimating it to make $56 million in North America its opening weekend, which is less than the previous movie’s $62.5 million holiday opening,...

Turns out, Bad Boys are good for ticket sales.
Sony’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” the fourth entry in the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence-led buddy cop series, started strong with $56 million from 3,885 theaters in its domestic debut. The film also opened at the international box office with $48.6 million, bringing its worldwide tally to $104.6 million.
The sequel to 1995’s “Bad Boys,” 2003’s “Bad Boys II” and 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life” is notable as Smith’s first major film to grace the big screen since he assaulted Chris Rock on stage at the 2022 Oscars. So what should Hollywood take away from “Bad Boys” in its fourth go-around? Well, audiences haven’t soured on Smith — though it helps that he returned to theaters in a time-tested and generally well-received franchise.

Introduced in the second installment in the Planet of the Apes reboot franchise, Jason Clarke’s Malcolm served as the leading human character, who forms a close bond with Caesar and other apes. However, despite his significant presence in the film, the character was absent from its sequel, War for the Planet of the Apes.

The boys are back in town. Sony and Columbia’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” got off to a solid start at the box office with $21.6 million from 3,885 locations across Friday and preview screenings. The movie also gets a revenue boost from Imax and other premium large format auditoriums.
The action sequel, directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, is now looking at an opening of $53 million through the three-day frame in North America. Sony had initially projected a debut of $30 million heading into the weekend, going way below industry estimates of $45 million to $50 million. The studio seems to have made a cautious lowball, considering “The Fall Guy” and “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” have given the summer box office a run of high-profile titles debuting below expectations.

Despite Hollywood's box office haul being generally disappointing this year, the "Planet of the Apes" franchise is proving to be surprisingly resilient.
Seven years after "War for the Planet of the Apes" concluded the Caesar trilogy on a critical high note as one of the most significant blockbusters of the decade, director Wes Ball's "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" has managed to hold strong and bring back the same audience that turned the previous films into box office success stories. To that end, the film crossed a major milestone this past weekend, sailing past the $300 million mark worldwide on what was otherwise an abysmal few days for theaters.
On its fourth weekend in theaters, "Kingdom" pulled in another $8.9 million, staying at fourth place on the charts. It landed just below John Krasinski's "If" ($10.5 million) and well above Universal's "The Fall Guy" ($4.1 million), which has already...

Update: (Monday Pm) As noted yesterday, the margin between the 2nd and 3rd place finish for If and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was slim, and in the end, after final figures were reported, their positions at the weekend box office flip-flopped. According to the latest numbers via Deadline, Furiosa made $10.785 million to If‘s $10.5. While that’s only a $285k difference, it gives Furiosa a bit of a better finish, allowing it to reclaim second place, although it trails far behind The Garfield Movie‘s first-place finish with $14 million.

2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes brought about a resounding change in the franchise’s universe and appeared to mark an end to the saga. However, the 2022 Wes Ball directorial, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, has expanded the lore further ahead by as much as three centuries after the end of its previous installment, and with a new working order that has apes as the dominant species on the planet and humans reduced to a feral state.

At a time when the flick is surging ahead at the global box office with the likes of Freya Allan spearheading its cast, it also has not forgotten its roots. Eagle-eyed fans have spotted numerous connections between the current movie’s central characters and Caesar, the ape from the first 2011 movie who kick-started the lore in the first place.

It’s another bummer of a weekend at the summer of box office, where overall domestic revenue looks to be down 69 percent — no, not a typo — from a year ago as Hollywood and theater owners continue to grapple with a lack of big event pics. And year-to-date revenue is now down 24 percent over last year.
For some, there is reason to smile. Alcon and Sony’s The Garfield Movie easily purred past George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga to top the weekend chart with an estimated $14 million for a domestic tally of $51.6 million. Alcon fully financed the $60 million film, which crossed the $100 million mark overseas for a global tally of $152.2 million.
Furiosa, costing a pricey $168 million to produce, fell a steep 59 percent to $10.8 million, dashing hopes that it could rebound after a disappointing Memorial Day opening. The dystopian epic is also stalling overseas, where it took in only...

“The Garfield Movie” clawed its way to first place, overtaking last weekend’s champion “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” at the domestic box office.
This weekend (unlike last) wasn’t a nail-biter as “Garfield” effortlessly pulled ahead with $14 million from 4,108 theaters in its second weekend of release, while “Furiosa” trailed in third place with $10.7 million from 3,864 venues in its sophomore outing. Now, Sony’s “The Garfield Movie” has grossed $51.5 million in North America and $152 million globally to date. It’s a solid showing for the $60 million-budgeted film. “Furiosa,” the fifth entry in Warner Bros. and director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic “Mad Max” series, has generated $49.6 million domestically and $114 million worldwide. With a $168 million price tag, the R-rated tentpole has a much steeper path to profitability.

If the summer box office is ever going to heat up, it’ll have to wait a while longer. In a weekend being led by holdovers, Sony’s “The Garfield Movie” looks to overtake “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” for first place on domestic charts.
The marketplace continues to be dire overall, but Sony is doing well for itself. The studio is also putting out the manga adaptation “Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle” through its anime banner Crunchyroll. Playing in 1,086 locations (including showtimes in a few Imax auditoriums), the high school sports film earned $1.9 million across Friday and preview screenings and looks to take sixth place on domestic charts. It’s just the latest example of how anime has found a niche but dedicated theatrical audience in North America. As expected, The Garfield Movie seems to be squeezing out a victory opposite Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga at the weekend box office. Both films are in their second week of release, and Deadline has Garfield making about $13 million this weekend compared to $11.5 for Furiosa. To note, this margin is pretty slim, so the numbers could easily swing the other way by the time the final figures come in tomorrow afternoon. The Garfield Movie is looking at a roughly 45% week 2 drop, while Furiosa is in the 57% range.
To be sure, those are steeper drops than we anticipated in our box office predictions earlier this week. I expected Garfield to claw its way to the top spot, but I thought decent word-of-mouth would allow both films stronger holds. Alas, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Warner Bros.’ “Furiosa” pulled out to a narrow lead over Sony/Alcon/Dneg’s “The Garfield Movie,” though that is not much of a victory as the $32 million extended opening earned by the “Mad Max” prequel is part of the worst Memorial Day weekend box office results seen since the 1990s.
“Furiosa” scored the lowest total for a No. 1 Memorial Day film since “Casper” in 1995, while the overall estimated 4-day total of $128 million is a sharp 37% drop from last year’s Memorial Day weekend.
It’s a drop that can be attributed to an industry-wide slump as Hollywood and exhibitors weather weeks of reduced theatrical output due to delays caused by last year’s strikes, including Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which has enjoyed exceptional presales but moved from May to late July and left theaters without their customary comic book film boost to kick off the summer.

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is stalling at the international box office with $33.3 million from 75 territories. The fifth entry in director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic series has generated $58.9 million globally in its first weekend of release, a rough start given its $168 million production budget.
Domestically, the Warner Bros. prequel “Furiosa” is closely battling Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” for first place on box office charts, with each grossing roughly $25 million over the weekend and an estimated $31 million through Memorial Day on Monday. Whichever lands at No. 1, this ranks as one of the worst Memorial Day holiday weekends in decades.

Jeffrey Aro has worked on the stunt teams of several major films and television shows in his career – including “Yellowjackets,” “Lost in Space,” “War for the Planet of the Apes,” and more. But his role as supervising stunt coordinator on the Netflix series “Avatar: The Last Airbender” might have been the most complex and trickiest of his career. Discussions about the show started months ahead of production, and the series required Aro to not just train a cast of young actors in the ways of airbending and martial arts but also adhere to what fans of the property remember from the beloved anime series that ran on Nickelodeon in the mid-2000s.
“The first layer we wanted to ensure the cast understood was breathing. So much authentic movement can be found in the breath,” Aro tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “So we just defined four different qigong inner-energy breathing techniques.

Sunday Am, 5:36 Am: Saturdays were good to If lifting the pic to a now $34M opening after a $13.6M Saturday, up 32% against $10.3M Friday and previews. That means that A CinemaScore word of mouth is working. I’m hearing tracking was over its skis predicting it at $40M, and presales all along indicated it was in the $30M range. The John Krasinski directed/written/produced movie drew 50% general and 50% family, and the reason why If is a little lighter is because those 50% Rotten Tomatoes scores kept the main audience away. Pic will easily keep families coming to theaters even with Garfield next weekend. Two family movies can share the marketplace.
Comscore/Screen Engine PostTrak audiences gave the pics 84% positive and a 64% definite reommend. Kids under 12 gave it 88% and 49% must see right away. Mom skewing at 56% female with 49% of the audience between 18-34. Diversity demos were 41% Caucasian, 26% Hispanic and Latino,...
