Praise Be: One Of The Best HBO Comedies Ever Has A Perfect Ending
Image
This article contains mild spoilers for the series finale of "The Righteous Gemstones."

After six years and four seasons, Danny McBride's hit HBO comedy, "The Righteous Gemstones," has completed its story. At least, the story audiences are permitted to see. The third HBO series from McBride and frequent collaborators David Gordon Green and Jody Hill under their Rough House Pictures banner following "Eastbound & Down" and the criminally underappreciated "Vice Principals," time will be incredibly kind to "The Righteous Gemstones," a show too smart, too funny, and too full of heart for its brilliance to be recognized on the scale it so rightfully deserved. The fact that the series (as of publication) never nabbed a Primetime Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series is downright criminal and, in a just world, would be the only sign anyone needs to delegitimize the awards circuit. Some folks just don't appreciate the gift of Uncle Baby Billy Freeman,...

In Emmy-Contending ‘Ren Faire,’ An Aging Ruler Struggles With Relinquishing His Crown: Director Lance Oppenheim On Parallels To Biden & Trump
Image
Elon Musk got his wish. Voters in the southern tip of Texas just approved his plan to incorporate Starbase as its own city, at the SpaceX boss’s behest.

But Musk isn’t the first magnate to get his own town in Texas. Long before him, George Coulam – creator the of the world’s largest Renaissance Fair – incorporated Todd Mission, TX, where he rules as King George surrounded by vassals, courtiers and other minions in medieval garb. The story of Coulam and his kingdom, and the succession battle over his throne, is told in the Emmy-contending HBO documentary series Ren Faire, directed by Lance Oppenheim.

“He has power, as the elected mayor of the town he incorporated,” reads a Ren Faire synopsis. “He has glory, as the undisputed employer and self-proclaimed ruler of thousands.”

But in his mid-80s, King George ponders whether to abdicate and devote his remaining days...

Trump Jump: Fox News Hits Record Viewership for President’s First 100 Days
Image
For Fox News, President Trump’s first 100 days back in the White House were a big success — even when compared to his first term.

The ratings make that clear, with Fox News averaging more viewers — both in primetime and over the course of the entire day — during the first 100 days of President Trump’s second term than during the first 100 days following his 2017 inauguration.

In fact, Fox News just enjoyed the highest-rated first 100 days of any presidency in cable news history, surpassing the record it set in ’17.

Here are the key figures: Fox News has averaged 1.90 million viewers Mon-Sun since the president re-entered the White House on Jan. 20, which is up 13% compared to the 1.68 million the channel averaged during his first 100 days in office in ’17.

The channel’s primetime viewership has also increased 9% compared to 2017, going from an average of 2.81 million viewers each night to 3.06 million this year, according to Nielsen audience data.

How ‘Sinners’ Found Its Flock At The Box Office: 4-Day Debut Ascending To Near $55M
Image
For a second time this month, Warner Bros turned around its box office fortunes at the last minute before a movie’s opening with Sinners overperforming to $48 million after what appeared to be a mid-$30M projection by some tracking services earlier in the month.

The first trailer for Sinners dropped in September and didn’t really make a splash, hence the worrisome buzz that floated around the movie for quite some time as one of the risky, $100M auteur feature productions (net $90M+ actually) under the Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy administration.

With its Friday previews of $4.7M indicating to some a high-$30M projection, how did Sinners land in the high $40Ms? Essentially, this happens when the movie itself becomes the most powerful marketing tool, evident in Sinners’ 98% certified fresh Rotten Tomatoes reviews, rare A CinemaScore for a horror film and 84% definite recommend on PostTrak. Whenever this happens,...

Is Robert Pattinson Going To Star In Dune 3 After His Wish To Feature In It Went Viral? Here’s What We Know
Image
Robert Pattinson set to feature in Dune 3? ( Photo Credit – Flickr )

A few days back, there were reports that Robert Pattinson had shared his desire to play a role in Dune’s sequel. Now, media outlets are suggesting that there might be a chance that Pattinson can get into the world of Dune. From heading Gotham City as Batman to leading Arrakis, it is going to be a tremendous journey. Based on recent reports, the Batman actor has been eyed for a villainous role in Dune 3.

For the unversed, Denis Villeneuve’s directorial sci-fi movie franchise Dune and Dune 2 featured a bunch of great actors, including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, and others. Now, Dune 3 will introduce more characters, and that might just open up the chance for Pattinson to play an essential role in the sequel.

As per Variety, Robert Pattinson has been offered...

The Batman Star Robert Pattinson Eyed For Lead Villain In Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Messiah
Image
Before he heads back to Gotham City, it sounds like Robert Pattinson might be heading to Arrakis!

According to Deadline, Pattinson (The Batman; Mickey 17; Tenet) is being eyed for the primary antagonist role in Dune: Messiah, the third and final installment of director Denis Villeneuve's acclaimed Dune trilogy.

No formal offer has been presented to Pattinson's team just yet as both sides will likely have to first figure out his busy shooting schedule, since he's already scheduled to film both Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey and Matt Reeves' long-awaited The Batman Part II later this year.

If a deal closes, it's expected that Pattinson will portray the film's lead villain, Scytale.

In the novel Dune Messiah, Scytale is a Face Dancer - a shape-shifting operative - of the Bene Tleilax, a secretive and morally ambiguous faction known for genetic manipulation and subterfuge. He leads a conspiracy against Paul Atreides,...

‘Dune 3’: Legendary Circling Robert Pattinson For New Role In Upcoming Installment – The Dish
Image
Exclusive: Even as Denis Villeneuve puts finishing touches on the script for the next installment in the Dune franchise, the director already has his sights set on a new addition to the all-star ensemble. While sources close to the project say no formal offer has been presented, Deadline is hearing there is strong interest in Robert Pattinson joining the cast. Legendary had no comment.

The film already features an A-list ensemble that includes Timothée Chalamet, Florence Pugh and Zendaya, and many are expected to return. Even so, a handful of new roles remain and, as with any Dune project, stars are always lining up at the chance to appear in the Oscar-winning franchise.

While its unknown who Pattinson would play if a deal closes, the role is expected to be a significant one.

As Deadline previously reported, the plan is to shoot the film this summer. Villeneuve is returning to direct.

The 15 Best Hulu Original TV Shows, Ranked
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Hulu has been offering entertainment for the masses since it joined the streaming wars in March 2008. Like many streaming services, the platform aims to be a one-stop shop for people looking for nostalgic favorites and new content that they can watch on demand. It even offered the Academy Awards streamed live in 2025, which unfortunately turned into an embarrassing failure.

However, Hulu still continues to strive in its mission of offering the best content possible, and that includes several Hulu Original series that stand out in the very crowded streaming landscape. This catalog contains a wide range of genres offering something for everyone, and there also plenty of genre mashups that create fresh, intriguing content that stand out from the rest.

But choosing what to watch is never easy when you have such a large library to browse. That's why we've...

Christina Ricci Missed Out on Starring in 'Léon: The Professional' for a Ridiculous Reason
Image
Christina Ricci has been an accomplished actress and has starred in several popular films and series since her big screen debut in Mermaids (1990). But one role she missed out on was that of Mathilda in the classic 1994 film, Léon: The Professional, losing out to Natalie Portman. And in a new interview with the YouTube show, First We Feast (via The Wrap), Ricci reveals the ridiculous reason why: she was "too common and healthy looking."

That may come as a surprise to some, considering one of Ricci's most famous roles was the rather gothic Wednesday Addams in the early 1990s hit film, The Addams Family and its sequel. She explained to her Yellowjackets co-star Melanie Lynskey why she lost out on her "dream role:"

"I really wanted to be in 'Léon: The Professional,' but I was too common and healthy-looking. What a time to be twelve."

YouTube's TV app prepping to display titles from on-demand streamers
Image
The move is designed to simplify the process for users who subscribe to services via YouTube’s Primetime Channels.

When it comes to streaming, there is no service that dominates the market than YouTube. When it comes to viewership, the platform outperforms every subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service, and in many cases, by exponential numbers. However, the Google-owned platform is not resting on those laurels. Instead, The Information is reporting that the YouTube app on TV — not to be confused with the YouTube TV app, which initially was not clear to me — will start integrating shows and movies from SVOD streamers into the YouTube homepage. While consumers will still have to pay to access this content, the move is designed to eliminate a pain point of having to bounce between sections of the app to access all of the streaming titles you want to watch.

Key Details: YouTube plans to...

MSNBC Anchor Rachel Maddow Blasts Her Network For Cancelling Joy Reid’s Show, Mistreating Staff
Image
Longtime liberal MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow has slammed her own network for the cancellation of former fellow anchor Joy Reid’s show, The ReidOut.

Following reports over the weekend that Reid had been fired, it was officially announced on Monday that Reid, who is the only African American woman ever to have her own show in primetime on the network, will no longer be hosting on MSNBC.

Reid was fired by MSNBC’s new president Rebecca Kutler, who has promised a new era for the network under her supervision. The characteristically liberal network has already canceled several shows hosted by people of color, including Katie Phang and Alex Wagner.

Reid was given a farewell episode on Monday night, featuring Maddow, among other hosts. Maddow described herself as “bereft that The ReidOut is ending.” In Maddow’s own show, which took place roughly 90 minutes later, she took advantage of her platform...

Joy Reid Signs Off From MSNBC With Call to Resist ‘Crisis of Democracy’
Joy-Ann Reid in The ReidOut (2020)
In her final broadcast on The ReidOut, Joy Reid took the opportunity to reflect on America’s history of resistance, urging viewers to stay engaged in the fight for democracy. As her time at MSNBC came to a close, Reid framed the current political landscape as a moment that demanded action and resilience.

“How do you resist when fascism isn’t just coming, it’s already here?” Reid asked. She discussed how crucial it is to draw from history when facing such a crisis, pointing to examples like the Underground Railroad, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Stonewall protests. “The first rule is to fight back, to never stop resisting,” she said.

Throughout her time on the show, Reid tackled numerous political issues. She stood firm in her positions on Black Lives Matter, Asian hate, immigrant rights, and the conflict in Gaza, asserting her right to address these topics without apology.

Joy Reid Opens Final MSNBC Show With Message of Resistance: “Fascism Isn’t Just Coming, It’s Already Here”
Image
Joy Reid dedicated her final MSNBC episode on Monday to America’s history with successful resistance campaigns.

“We begin tonight with what I think is the question when you are in the midst of a crisis, and specifically a crisis of democracy: How do you resist when fascism isn’t just coming, it’s already here?” Reid said. “What, if anything, can you do about it? For one thing, you can try to learn from history, from what people in this situation, in countries around the world and in America, have done before. As my friend Rachel Maddow always says, History is here to help.”

News broke on Sunday morning that Reid’s show was canceled, along with many other MSNBC shakeups.

Reid went on to list several examples of resistance from the 19th and 20th centuries, including Harriet Tubman’s work on the Underground Railroad and “taking up arms during the Civil War,...

Jen Psaki Moves to Primetime, Ali Velshi Expands Airtime in MSNBC Lineup Overhaul
Image
MSNBC unveiled its new lineup on Monday, with former Biden Press Secretary Jen Psaki seeing her show expand to several nights during the week and outgoing anchor Joy Reid being replaced by a new program.

The changes are being spearheaded by recently-appointed MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler, who is betting on names that are well-liked in Democratic and left-leaning circles to help the cable channel continue its rebound from a post-election viewer exodus.

The big change is that Psaki’s show, “Inside with Jen Psaki,” will now air Tuesday-Friday at 9 p.m. Et. Veteran host Rachel Maddow will return following President Trump’s first 100 days in office to host the 9 p.m. hour on Mondays.

Psaki is replacing Alex Wagner, who has anchored Tuesday-Friday at 9 p.m. since 2022; Wagner will be staying with MSNBC as a senior political analyst.

And MSNBC confirmed it is replacing “The ReidOut” with a new show...

Google, YouTube reach new TV deal with Paramount, avoiding blackout
Image
The YouTube app running on a smartphone. (Stock image)

Paramount Global and Google-owned YouTube have reached a new distribution agreement that keeps linear channels and streaming services on YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels for a few more years.

The pact was announced late Saturday evening, about two days after Paramount began warning TV viewers that nearly two dozen broadcast and cable channels were likely to be dropped from YouTube TV. The warning came after Paramount said Google and YouTube required an agreement to “one-sided terms” that included “non-market demands” in order to continue carrying the channels on YouTube TV and streaming services like Paramount Plus, BET Plus and Showtime on YouTube Primetime Channels.

A source previously told The Desk that both sides had largely squared things away on the price Google and YouTube must pay to distribute Paramount-owned broadcast and cable channels like CBS, Paramount Network, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon on YouTube TV.

Paramount and YouTube TV Strike Short-Term Extension as Carriage Talks Continue
Image
Paramount programming will continue to be available on YouTube TV despite the expiration of their carriage deal on Thursday night, after the two companies reached a short-term extension.

YouTube TV announced the extension in a social media post just after the current deal expired at 11:00 p.m. Eastern. “An update for our members: We’ve reached a short-term extension with Paramount to keep their content on YouTube TV. Subscribers continue to have access to Paramount channels, including CBS,” the company said. “We appreciate your patience as we continue to negotiate on your behalf.”

Paramount declined to comment, but an insider separately confirmed the deal to TheWrap.

On Wednesday, Paramount warned customers the service could go dark when the deal expired and complained that “YouTube TV is attempting to pressure Paramount to agree to one-sided terms.”

YouTube TV disputed this in its own statement, saying in part, “We’ve been...

Ari Aster’s ‘Eddington,’ Starring Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone, Heads to EFM as A24 Eyes Cannes Debut and Summer Release (Exclusive)
Image
A24 is bringing “Eddington,” Ari Aster’s hotly-anticipated contemporary Western thriller starring Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone and Austin Butler, to the European Film Market in Berlin this month, Variety has learned.

Also starring Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward and Clifton Collins Jr., the film is now in post-production and is believed to revolve around a couple stranded in a small New Mexico town. Though they are initially welcomed, the town takes a sinister turn by nightfall. Phoenix portrays the town’s sheriff with ambitious dreams.

Variety also understands that “Eddington” could be in contention for Cannes debut — which would make it Aster’s first film as director to bow at the festival — with A24 targeting a summer release.

Production on “Eddington” kicked off in March 2024, with Aster writing, directing and producing alongside Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg banner. Two-time Academy Award nominee Darius Khondji is the director of photography.

Image
Fox News topped the ratings in January, posting big gains from a year earlier, while MSNBC saw signs that viewers were coming back after a post-election tune-out.

In primetime, Fox News averaged 2.78 million viewers, up 40% from the same month a year earlier, while MSNBC averaged 734,000, down 33%, and CNN posted 522,000, down 14%. In the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 353,000, up 61%, compared to CNN with 118,000, down 5%, and MSNBC with 63,000, down 41%.

In total day, Fox News averaged 1.92 million viewers, up 53%, compared to MSNBC with 506,000, down 34%, and 421,000 for CNN, down 9%. In the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 253,000, up 70%, followed by CNN with 80,000, down 7%, and MSNBC with 45,000, down 42%.

Fox News’ rivals are pointing to month-to-month comparisons for signs that viewers are returning to the news cycles. There is a bit of a caveat, given the December holiday period generally sees a viewership dip, while January was a particularly busy news month.

MSNBC said that it averaged 1.3 million primetime viewers last week,...

‘Twin Peaks’ Star Kyle MacLachlan Remembers David Lynch: “He Understood That Questions Are The Drive That Make Us Who We Are”
Image
Kyle MacLachlan, who was David Lynch’s FBI agent Dale Cooper from Twin Peaks, Paul Atreides from Dune and Jeffrey Beaumont from Blue Velvet, took to social media Thursday to express his sorrow over the death of the filmmaker who made him a leading man across TV and film.

Wrote MacLachlan, “Forty-two years ago, for reasons beyond my comprehension, David Lynch plucked me out of obscurity to star in his first and last big budget movie. He clearly saw something in me that even I didn’t recognize. I owe my entire career, and life really, to his vision.

“What I saw in him was an enigmatic and intuitive man with a creative ocean bursting forth inside of him. He was in touch with something the rest of us wish we could get to.

“Our friendship blossomed on Blue Velvet and then Twin Peaks and I always found him to...

Local News Audiences Doubled and Even Tripled During L.A. Fire Coverage
Image
As tragedy struck Los Angeles, residents turned to local journalists — on TV, radio and online — to stay informed. Los Angeles’ local TV stations saw a tremendous spike in news viewership last Tuesday, Jan. 7, as the city first came under siege from fierce Santa Ana winds, leading to the devastating fires in Pacific Palisades, Altadena and elsewhere. As stations went with wall-to-wall coverage, they saw their normal viewership double and even triple in some cases, especially has the fires began to quickly spread into neighborhoods in the early evening.

According to Nielsen data, market leader Kabc (Channel 7) averaged 318,166 viewers for its 6 p.m. newscast on Jan. 7; in the days leading up to Tuesday, the ABC-owned station normally posted an average of 170,769 in the timeslot. The station also saw huge spikes at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m..

Nexstar’s CW outlet Ktla (Channel 5) experienced a tremendous viewership increase that evening as well,...

Where Networks Stand In News Ratings In 2024: Fox Gets Big Bounce, While MSNBC and CNN Look To Come Back From Post-Election Tune Out
Image
The past year, 2024, was supposed to be a big audience uplift for major cable news networks: A presidential election, with proven ratings getter Donald Trump as one of the major players.

While Fox News, MSNBC and CNN did see a rise in their ratings, the latter two networks saw a big post-election drop off as politics weary viewers tuned out after Trump’s victory and Vice President Kamala Harris’ loss.

The question for 2025 is whether those regular viewers come back after a bit of a break from burnout, as some executives expect, or if their habits turn to other sources, like ideologically friendly podcasts or digital streaming.

What’s more, the coming year will likely see major changes at MSNBC and CNN, as the former prepares to separate itself from the Comcast mothership, and the latter undergoes an overhaul to integrate CNN.com and digital video.

Fox News topped primetime, averaging 2.38 million viewers,...

Ex-snl star told Saturday Night director he 'should be embarrassed' by film
Image
With Saturday Night, director Jason Reitman attempted to bring audiences behind the scenes of the first Saturday Night Live episode. But one former cast member gave Reitman a scathing review right to his face.

Saturday Night blended history with hyperbole in detailing how Lorne Michaels got the first SNL episode on the air. An ensemble cast was put together to portray the original "Not Ready for Primetime" players that debuted in 1975.

Among the original cast members was Chevy Chase. Reitman recently appeared on the Fly on the Wall podcast and told hosts Dana Carvey and David Spade about Chase's reaction.

"So, Chevy comes in to watch the movie,” Reitman said. “And he is there with [his wife] Jayni and they watch the film, and he’s in the group, and he comes up to me after and he pats me on the shoulder and goes, ‘Well, you should be embarrassed.’”

Roman Reigns' Phone Call Scene on SmackDown Has an Incredible Inspiration Only Real Ecw Fans Will Remember
Image
A lot of Ecw fans may have gotten dj vu while watching Roman Reigns' phone call to Paul Heyman on last Friday's episode of WWE SmackDown. The ongoing Bloodline story arc reached its most interesting development, when Reigns tried to call his all-knowing advocate and Wiseman, only to learn the number is disconnected.

As Bubba "Bully" Ray Dudley expressed on Busted Open Radio, and in an accompanying X post, Roman Reigns' phone call to Paul Heyman on WWE SmackDown echoes another storyline from Paul Heyman's extreme alma mater, Ecw, in a story involving Tommy Dreamer and Terry Funk. Dreamer would corroborate Bully's sentiment in an X post of his own, adding that while WWE's storyline heads into Survivor Series: WarGames, Dreamer's kindred storyline was heading into Ecw November to Remember 1996.

Dissecting both storylines for their similarities and differences highlights the importance of bringing wrestling's past into the present,...
