Asks the questions
Stanlee10731 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is an intense film that asks the existential questions about God & mortality. The protagonist, is the girl in question, seems to walk through this film with an iron will belief that her fate will provide her with the answers at the end of her life & the world. Instead of going down the Rapture route, they take the Armegedon film one laced with her Christianity beliefs... Her belief in God is so strong that she chooses to cling onto it until the inevitable end... She is so stoic despite enduring a tragedy closed to home that makes her character unbelievable. This is ultimately a film about fate & facing one's own "destiny"...

It is not an easy watch in which she provides the ongoing expositions & relentless unanswered questions. This is a fitting film to watch before the end of 2020... This is a miserable film that perfectly captures this year & one that you may not put to bed so easily... This may offend the nihilist out there...

Slow, Dark, and Wonderful
hannahtrenton30 December 2020
Watched this with my husband over the weekend and we both really enjoyed it. It came recommended to us by a friend of his as a different kind of indie film that really stood out to him and I completely agree.

The lead actress did a great job in the piece as well as several of the supporting actors. My favorites were probably the space center lead guy and also the older guy who questioned her about what she was doing. And I'll admit, I was surprised at the plot of the film at first, but then began to understand exactly what it was attempting and really got into it.

My only criticisms were that I feel the filmmaker tried to take on a larger project than they could handle and I wish they had perhaps a bigger budget to try and pull something like this off, but none-the-less, I enjoyed it very much!

Subtle and Intimate
jasmineyala28 December 2020
The film starts out with the main character soaring away from the earth in a tiny space ship and stays with her for the whole film, but through her, we learn who she is, what is happening, and why she is in the ship. And this small approach to an end of the world film, told by the sole survivor, is really what hooked me on the film.

Love the female lead character and how it is mainly told from her point of view and also love how the show doesn't rely on men to fix everything for her. She sets out on her own, decides what she must do, and stops at nothing to get there.

My favorite part of the film has to be the voice that she hears inside the ship and how even she is questioning her own choices, sort of.

My only criticisms of the film would be the smaller budget the film had as I felt they maybe tried to pull off too much and some of the scenes suffered for it. But points for trying in the first place. I also didn't care much for the sort of break in the film where the main character sings. I mean, it didn't feel out of place or anything, but maybe skipping that would have sped things along a bit.

7 out of 10 stars though and I would recommend it to people who like slower more down to earth (no pun intended) sci-fi films and FEMALE LED films!

Sad Film but Enjoyed It.
julietritone2 January 2021
The film feel like a dream and kept my attention throughout. The best part for me was the main character and her family interaction. The scene with her sisters and the car was really nice and I was sad afterwards. So many time we take for granted those we love and we need to learn to value the moment we have together.

Small Focus but Deep Story
mikechalmers-766207 January 2021
Similar to other character based, sci-fi films that I've seen, The Last Earth Girl focuses not so much on the hard science or strict sci-fi but merely uses them as a backdrop for the film to help tell the story of a young woman alone at the end of the world.

The film is also rife with homages to earlier sci-fi films such as the main girl's uniform which brings to mind Sam Bell's uniform in Moon and I also appreciate the literary references to Sisyphus.

By far though, the greatest strength of the film has to be the depth to which the story focuses on the inner struggles of the main character and the value of them. Going so far as to have her inner voice become vocal, mocking and questioning her along the way. And this stoic philosophy is elevated even more with the help of some of the minor characters in the film such as the older space center worker.

Falling a bit short for me though, was some of the pacing and slow camera work used to tell the story. Perhaps a more fluid approach and more movement could have added more life to it for me. All in all though, a decent film.

Bleak but hopeful
lizziealvarez-8730028 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
No spoilers here but the film starts off with the world already ending and the main character well on her way away from Earth with little hope of a future. And it gets darker from there. Not trying to make a joke, but the film doesn't pull punches when it comes to showing the deterioration of the world and how the characters lives fall apart.

Afraid I might get into spoilers the more I talk about the film but trust me, if you're a fan of smaller, more intimate, sci-fi films, then this is the movie for you. Reminded me of The Midnight Sky, which I also saw recently on Netflix, although this film had a much smaller budget obviously.

Loved it!
lovewillfindaway-901546 February 2021
Reminds me a lot of another favorite film of mine, Another Earth, which is maybe why I liked this film so much.

The story in this film moves a bit slow at first and the main actress comes across a little stiff in the beginning but after the film starts to take off, I got why she was acting that way and it all started to make a lot more sense.

I was really touched by the scenes with her father and especially the diner scene where she calls her sister and the tiny road scene afterwards with the pink sky. I'm not sure why, but those were my favorite scenes in the film.

I got taken out of the film a couple times by a sound issue but it was minor. I also thought some of the characters were laying on the themes of the film a bit heavy but maybe you have to do that in movies now.

All in all, I loved the film. Even more now that I've had time to process it and hopefully it'll come out on Blu-ray too so I can add it to my movie collection.

Quite Enjoyable
jenerenolds2 January 2021
The film may have started out slow, but the pacing was well worth it as the story unfolded to show a world enveloped in dread of the coming apocalypse. And that sense of cosmic horror really helped sell the desperation of the main character to me. I also wasn't sure if I would be able to get into the film because of the religious aspects but soon realized that this isn't a religious film but a philosophical film that questions the ideas and concepts of God. Would highly recommend.

Slow at parts but Good
pathwaymountain7 February 2021
I really liked how the film began and liked the story quite a bit but fell out a bit toward the middle. Not sure why exactly, maybe I just wasn't interested in some of the scenes, but it picked up again at about the 1/2 way mark and I really liked it from then on. Especially the scenes at the space facility and the scenes with her sisters.

I wish some of the smaller scenes that I mentioned before had been done better, maybe that would've made them more interesting for me, but all in all I loved it. Especially the theme in the film about carrying on no matter what the end may be. Determination no matter what. Liked that a lot.

One more thing: Why is the score on this film so low?!? After watching it, I wasn't expecting it to be at the top of the charts but something is up with the score on this. I looked at the average and it doesn't add up.

Anyway, highly recommended to fellow indie drama fans.

Independent Excellence!
willtrenton30 December 2020
Truly a unique little independent film and one well worth the watch if you're a fan of films that go outside the norm of mainstream filmmaking and try to tell a unique story.

What it lacks in perhaps polish, it more than makes up for in story, character, and direction. Plus, the special effects were really quite good and surprised me in several parts. I also noticed how well everything flowed together and that stuck out to me as a sign that a lot of thought was put into the project.

I've recommended it to several friends and coworkers already and plan to continue doing so. Thank you for reading my short review.

Deep, Dark, and Wonderful
taliarineheart29 December 2020
The world is ending and with only a few years left, what will you do? That's the plot of The Last Earth Girl and following the story of a woman trapped alone in a tiny spaceship soaring away from the Earth, we learn the story behind her.

I'm a fan of dark films and stories, and this hits home among the best of them. But what pulls it across the finish line for me is the enduring theme of perseverance and continuing on despite the entire world ending. Which definitely seems like a good lesson for this year.

Would highly recommend to fans of dark, brooding, storytelling.

Surprisingly Good
tammyshores28 December 2020
And I don't mean to sound mean when I say surprisingly, but I've came across more than one indie film out there that I couldn't finish. This one however, has been added to my "buy on Blu-Ray" list as soon as it's available.

I started the film without knowing anything about it because of a recommendation of a friend of mine who stumbled across it and I can't thank her enough. This female led, sci-fi drama kept my attention from the very beginning and didn't let me down. The existential themes of the film really stood out to me as well and I appreciated how much time the film spent on them and the characters going through them instead of just rushing from explosion to explosion.

I would highly recommend this to fans of slower sci-fi films and dramas. Similar movies to this might be the 2002 remake of Solaris or the film End of the World, but only because of the smaller setting.

Dark and Slow
greghannes1 January 2021
And I don't mean slow in a bad way but if you're looking for a edge of your seat thrillride, you might want to keep moving. But, if you're looking for a dark film that takes away all hope but sees the characters trying to survive despite the end looming, then this is a film for you.

And don't worry about the religious tones because this really isn't a spiritual film, but more one that seeks to understand the concept of God or his absence in the wake of world-ending events.

Might have been better with a bigger budget but still solid.

Indie Sci-Fi Fans Look No Further!
albertgentry29 December 2020
What starts off as a somewhat sad/dark film about the world ending actually turns into a hopeful yet somewhat realistic film in which a young woman travels beyond the limits of any human before her eventually becoming the last earth girl. And through her eyes, we see the journey that brought her to where she is.

Personally, I really loved the way in which the story was told and the many characters that she meets along the way. My personal favorite was the older sister and the classic car scene which seemed very dreamlike and I ended up rewinding to watch a couple of times.

9/10, would highly recommend. Only criticism was the small budget of the film if that really is a criticism.

Slow Burn Greatness
yanikgleeson1 January 2021
Funny that I just watched The Midnight Sky a night or two before this one but I like this film even more. Perhaps because of the way the story unfolds and also perhaps because of the sheer isolation of the main character in the film.

Would definitely recommend to fans of slower, more thought-provoking films.

Great Indie Storytelling
smithol-0604329 December 2020
If a great, unique story is what you're looking for then look no further. From the very beginning, I was hooked on the story and the main character in the film. And although the film was very dark, I found it surprisingly hopeful in parts and in the characters fighting against the end as much as they could. Any more and I think I'll start spoiling things but I'd highly recommend this film to anyone searching for a great independent drama!

Indie Filmmaking with Heart
leoappleby29 December 2020
Far from your average, home-video camera type of film or cheap horror thriller, this film stands far apart from many of the independent films that I've seen over the years. And standing at the center of my review is the great story and the unique point of view that the story is told with.

Starting with the world already ending, we see characters trying to come to grips with the fact that their life will be ending and very soon. But it's told from the point of view of the last survivor of Earth in memories and flashbacks, and through it we learn the fate of the earth and the events that brought our main character to where she is.

9/10, would highly recommend.

Cold, Bleak, and Unblinking
kreugerstaffen2 January 2021
If you stare into the abyss, don't be surprised when the abyss stares back. That's the tone of this film and in the unblinking look that Miriam (the main character) takes when it's announced that the world will be ending soon. The harsh reality of our fragile existence is laid bare upon the world stage and if you stand and applaud or crumble and cry is up to you.

The nothing, and seeing it for the first time, was surprisingly excellent and portrayed very well in the film. Enjoyed it very much.

Can't Escape the End
firebirdflyer20 January 2021
The film starts out by telling you how it's going to end. An unknown event has occurred in space and in 7 years, the Earth will be destroyed. And that's where the film really starts. With that in mind, a young woman decides to stop giving in to the crumbling world around her and figure out what really matters to her and how to get there. This truly existential film starts off extremely dark and gets darker from there, but in this bleak look at the end of the world and life, there is hope that the end is not the answer, the goal is not the ends. The true value of life is the road traveled and the people we meet along the way.

Really enjoyed this indie drama and would highly recommend.

Solid Isolating Film
frankreynolds-209022 January 2021
Gave this film a chance and was not disappointed. Really loved the quite, horror that enveloped this film from the onset and even though I didn't know what exactly was happening at first, and many questions were still left unanswered, this really hit home with the lingering dread behind everything.

Low Budget but Solid
jerrywheeler-211231 January 2021
I've been following this film since I first saw the posts about it years ago. The story intrigued me and I soon became a supporter of the film. And with it finally releasing, I am happy that I followed it for so long.

Now granted, I wasn't involved in the film's making in any way, but supported and followed online only. But in finally getting to see the finished product after all the concept art, posts, etc, I am very impressed with the results.

And for those of you who don't know, this film wasn't a studio/hollywood/big budget film but a collaboration of a lot of different people over several years. A true independent undertaking (that I am glad to be proud of!).

My favorite part in the film has got to be the space shuttle or rather the interior because in watching the film develop, I got to see several behind the scenes photos of the sets and set construction. So finally seeing the finished film and putting it all together was very rewarding.

A thing of beauty, never fade away...
hopewright-164272 January 2021
And never fading away is what I took the most out of the film. The world is doomed, nothing can stop the end now, but what will you do with your time left. A powerful question and message that a woman faces in the film. And determined not to go quietly into that dark night, she rages against the dark and finds ways to still give her life meaning.

Beyond the concepts of God in the film is the concept of self and in looking for meaning in the chaos surrounding us. What do we truly want out of life and what will we do to get there?

Such a beautiful film!

Best Indie Film I've seen in a long time
sharonpaulson-3841128 December 2020
I watch a lot of independent films mainly because they tend to take chances that mainstream and hollywood films don't and this definitely doesn't disappoint! I went into this expecting a run of the mill, end of the world type film, but was soon hooked on the desperate story of the characters trying to make sense of things when their lives are suddenly given an expiration date.

I also love the female lead cast and especially the performance of the main actress. There were times when I thought she could have gone a bit farther but at the same time, I had to remember that the film was being told from a much later point of view.

The older sister also did a tremendous job on the project and I wish she could have been in the film more than she was. The car scene was by far my favorite. Maybe because it felt like a dream and maybe because it felt like something I might have done when I was younger.

9/10 only because I felt the film could've used a bigger budget but outside of that, a great movie! Would highly recommend if you're a fan of character based, existential sci-fi and films that make you think afterwards.

Not a feel good movie but still great!
devonthorton30 December 2020
Yeah, think my title pretty much says it all. If you're looking for a feel-good film, then you might want to look elsewhere but if you want a flic that'll make you think and leave you feeling much different about the the world then check out this movie!

I'll admit, I've never been much into slower film but I gave this one a chance on the recommendation of a friend, and I was glad I did. Past the lower budgets and somewhat lower tier? film look of the film was a great story with great characters and good creators. I really enjoyed that the film didn't go where I thought it was going at all and took me by surprise a lot of times.
