There is a strange tendency by TV and film writers to transform the works of Agatha Christie into light romps and playful farces. Christie wrote stern, sometimes bleak murder mysteries wherein damaged and bitter people, acting on their darkest impulses, will bitterly take the lives of others. Only uniquely intelligent and observant detectives like Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot are able to see through the hate of human bitterness to get to the truth. Yet when the time would come to adapt Christie's works to the screen, many screenwriters felt that those tales should also be funny. Christie has gone on record with her dislike of adaptations for this very reason. Few, she felt, did her writing justice. Christie passed away in 1976, so she was able to see some of the films that her works inspired, and she was pretty unilaterally miffed at their existence.

Billy Wilder is in contention for the best-director screenwriter to ever come out of Hollywood. That's not to say that every film he made sprung only from his own head -- for all the original screenplays Wilder filmed, from "Sunset Boulevard" to "Ace in the Hole," he adapted a fair few of other writers' stories as well. Wilder adapted crime novelist James M. Cain's "Double Indemnity" (itself based on a real-life murder) in 1944, and then Cain's "The Postman Always Rings Twice" in 1946. One of Wilder's later movies was 1970's "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes" (co-written with regular collaborator I. A. L. Diamond). But years before turning his attention to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Wilder adapted a different icon of the British mystery novel, Agatha Christie, when he brought her work to the silver screen in 1957's "Witness for the Prosecution.

In the early- to mid-1970s, a number of prominent filmmakers found modest success with star-studded whodunnits. In 1972, Joseph L. Mankiewicz directed Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine in a splendid adaptation of Anthony Shaffer's intricately plotted play "Sleuth." A year later, Herbert Ross directed the wickedly clever "The Last of Sheila," a mystery concocted by Anthony Perkins and Stephen Sondheim, and featuring such marquee names as James Coburn, Dyan Cannon, Richard Benjamin, Raquel Welch, and James Mason. Then in 1974, moviegoers got a double dose of Agatha Christie with Sidney Lumet's "Murder on the Orient Express", and Peter Collinson's "And Then There Were None".

There was no cultural development driving this sudden spate of whodunnits; it was just a reminder that people love to watch a bunch of great actors get thrown into the same location where foul play has been committed, and then try to work out...

Albert Finney had an acting legacy including triumphs on stage and television. He was primarily known worldwide for his career, which lasted over half a century, as a film actor, equally adept in lighthearted musicals and complex dramas.

Finney's work has been heralded in all three media. He won London's Olivier Award for "Orphans" on stage, and won an Emmy, Golden Globe and BAFTA Award for his performance as Winston Churchill in TV's "The Gathering Storm." But it was in film that Finney was most honored. In 2000, Finney scored a rare double at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, winning Best Supporting Actor for his work in Steven Soderbergh's "Erin Brockovich," and even though he had little more than a cameo part in Soderbergh's "Traffic" later that year, the role was big enough for him to win a second SAG Award that night as part of the film's ensemble cast.

An untitled propulsive romantic thriller starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock is in development at Amazon MGM Studios, the company announced on Friday.

Noah Oppenheim is writing the script, with plot details for the film being kept under wraps.

Producers include Bullock via Fortis Films, Reeves, Mark Gordon and Bibby Dunn via The Mark Gordon Company and Oppenheim and Sarah Bremner via Prologue Entertainment.

Johnny Depp is back at work on a Hollywood feature for the first time in years, with Lionsgate releasing a first-look at the actor in Day Drinker.

Additionally, the studio announced that Manu Rios, Aron Piper, Juan Diego Botto and Anika Boyle have joined Penélope Cruz in the thriller pic from director Marc Webb now shooting in Spain.

Madelyn Cline also stars in the film, which marks a potential Hollywood comeback for Depp after controversies surrounding his messy divorce from actress Amber Heard and a U.K. court ruling that resulted in Warner Bros. axing him from the Fantastic Beasts franchise in 2020.

In recent years, Depp has appeared in films such as French period drama Jeanne du Barry and directed Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness. But unlike Day Drinker, they were not commercial plays and were made with European backing.

Max’s Harry Potter TV series has officially cast four series regulars and two recurring roles, including four actors Deadline previously revealed: John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

The newly announced cast includes Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch. Whitehouse is the only actor cast thus far to have appeared in any of the original films. He played Sir Cadogan in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

The franchise follows the life of a young wizard, the titular Harry Potter, whose parents died under mysterious circumstances when he was very young. He was forced to live a life of misery and servitude to his aunt and uncle and their awful son before he was freed from his gilded cage when Hagrid extended an invitation that changed his life forever.

It’s a film made for TV that takes the spotlight in this episode of Film Stories, as 1984’s terrifying post-apocalyptic Threads moves into the limelight. A film made on a very tight budget, and shot in under three weeks, it was nearly derailed entirely by an American TV production around the same time. And when it did get made and was screened? The first film adaptation of an Agatha Christie story was Leslie H. Hiscott's and Julius Hagen's "The Passing of Mr. Quin," released in 1928. This was only eight years after her first work, "The Mysterious Affair at Styles," was published, so she was still quite active when movie versions of her stories began to appear. Exclusive: Pam Levine, who recently exited Disney Branded Television and National Geographic as Head of Marketing, is going to Netflix as VP, Ucan Marketing & Publicity. This executive move, I understand, was always in the works for a while.

At Netflix, Levine will oversee all publicity and marketing for U.S. and Canada film and series, and report to chief marketing officer Marian Lee.

An internal memo about this is imminent, I hear, at the streamer.

Levine, a former 20th Century Fox and HBO marketing chief, joined Disney General Entertainment in June 2022. In the role, she led an integrated internal agency that spanned brand and creative marketing, strategy, publicity, media planning, digital/social, events, talent relations and awards, supporting content created for Disney+ as well as the Disney- and National Geographic-branded linear networks.

Agatha Christie wrote 66 novels throughout her career, and not all of them were bangers. For every classic like "Murder on the Orient Express" — which has received countless movie adaptations over the years — there's a book like "Hallowe'en Party," which was only adapted recently in 2023, over 50 years after its publication date. There were even some Christie novels that have never received a movie adaptation at all, like her 1935 plane-based mystery "Death in the Clouds" that was only ever given the TV miniseries treatment.

At the bottom of most Christie fans' to-read list are four books of hers that never received an adaptation of any kind, be it as a movie, TV show, radio play, or graphic novel. Her 1944 book "Death Comes as the End," her 1954 book "Destination Unknown," her 1970 book "Passenger to Frankfurt," and her 1973 book "Postern of Fate" have all been ignored by the entertainment industry. So, what was wrong with them?...

Tangled is one of the most popular and beloved recent Disney movies. Which naturally led to a need for a live-action version.

Disney is known for its beloved animated Disney Princesses, which include both classic characters like Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Belle, and Ariel, but also newcomers like Merida, Tiana, Moana, Raya, and Rapunzel. The latter got her own movie with the beloved 2010 animation Tangled. Disney was already working on developing a live-action version, but, per The Hollywood Reporter, the plans for the live-action Tangled are now paused amid its Snow White headaches.

There were conversations about the adaptation, but Disney confirmed the Tangled live-action remake in December 2024. Michael Gracey, who helmed critically acclaimed productions like The Greatest Showman and the Robbie Williams biopic Better Man, was in talks to direct. Jennifer Kayton Robinson, who helms the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel, wrote the draft for the script.

This summer, the Jurassic series evolves in an ingenious new direction with Jurassic World Rebirth. And the dinosaur sequel has now stomped its way into CinemaCon. Universal showcased new footage from the movie, which will probably be finding its way online very soon with the movie hitting cinemas this summer. Pam Levine is leaving Disney.

Levine has been Head of Marketing for Disney Branded Television and National Geographic since July 2022.

The news was just shared by Shannon Ryan, who is President of Marketing for Disney Entertainment Television, in an email to staff.

Levine, who replaced Jayanta Jenkins, in the role, led brand and creative marketing, strategy, publicity, media planning, digital/social, events, talent relations and awards for the brands, which cover factual projects such as Sugarcane as well as titles such as Percy Jackson and the Olympians and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.

She will not be replaced with Ryan’s marketing and publicity teams assuming her responsibilities.

Erin Weir, who is EVP, Marketing, ABC and Disney Entertainment Television and oversees marketing for the linear network, ABC News, Disney Television Studios, affiliate marketing and syndication, will added marketing for Disney Branded Television to her oversight.
