There is a strange tendency by TV and film writers to transform the works of Agatha Christie into light romps and playful farces. Christie wrote stern, sometimes bleak murder mysteries wherein damaged and bitter people, acting on their darkest impulses, will bitterly take the lives of others. Only uniquely intelligent and observant detectives like Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot are able to see through the hate of human bitterness to get to the truth. Yet when the time would come to adapt Christie's works to the screen, many screenwriters felt that those tales should also be funny. Christie has gone on record with her dislike of adaptations for this very reason. Few, she felt, did her writing justice. Christie passed away in 1976, so she was able to see some of the films that her works inspired, and she was pretty unilaterally miffed at their existence.
Christie, sadly, didn't live long...

Billy Wilder is in contention for the best-director screenwriter to ever come out of Hollywood. That's not to say that every film he made sprung only from his own head -- for all the original screenplays Wilder filmed, from "Sunset Boulevard" to "Ace in the Hole," he adapted a fair few of other writers' stories as well. Wilder adapted crime novelist James M. Cain's "Double Indemnity" (itself based on a real-life murder) in 1944, and then Cain's "The Postman Always Rings Twice" in 1946. One of Wilder's later movies was 1970's "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes" (co-written with regular collaborator I. A. L. Diamond). But years before turning his attention to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Wilder adapted a different icon of the British mystery novel, Agatha Christie, when he brought her work to the silver screen in 1957's "Witness for the Prosecution.

For his latest video review, Kevin sits down to give his thoughts on another of his picks of the big-budget / low-budget / no-budget movie landscape… Treading Water. Giving you his personal opinion on why you should or shouldn’t give this movie your time.
Set amidst the backdrop of the iconic Manchester skyline, Treading Water tells the story of Danny (Joe Gill), fresh out of prison into the tough reality of supported housing and dealing with the mental health issues that have shaped him. Whilst he attempts to get his life back on track a chance encounter with past love Laura (Becky Bowe) shines a light in the dark – but will this hint of romance offer a shot at redemption or lead him on a path to tragedy? Treading Water is a raw and relatable film full of gripping drama and shot through with compassion, humour and hope.

In the early- to mid-1970s, a number of prominent filmmakers found modest success with star-studded whodunnits. In 1972, Joseph L. Mankiewicz directed Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine in a splendid adaptation of Anthony Shaffer's intricately plotted play "Sleuth." A year later, Herbert Ross directed the wickedly clever "The Last of Sheila," a mystery concocted by Anthony Perkins and Stephen Sondheim, and featuring such marquee names as James Coburn, Dyan Cannon, Richard Benjamin, Raquel Welch, and James Mason. Then in 1974, moviegoers got a double dose of Agatha Christie with Sidney Lumet's "Murder on the Orient Express", and Peter Collinson's "And Then There Were None".
There was no cultural development driving this sudden spate of whodunnits; it was just a reminder that people love to watch a bunch of great actors get thrown into the same location where foul play has been committed, and then try to work out...

Albert Finney had an acting legacy including triumphs on stage and television. He was primarily known worldwide for his career, which lasted over half a century, as a film actor, equally adept in lighthearted musicals and complex dramas.
Finney's work has been heralded in all three media. He won London's Olivier Award for "Orphans" on stage, and won an Emmy, Golden Globe and BAFTA Award for his performance as Winston Churchill in TV's "The Gathering Storm." But it was in film that Finney was most honored. In 2000, Finney scored a rare double at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, winning Best Supporting Actor for his work in Steven Soderbergh's "Erin Brockovich," and even though he had little more than a cameo part in Soderbergh's "Traffic" later that year, the role was big enough for him to win a second SAG Award that night as part of the film's ensemble cast.

Michelle Pfeiffer is a three-time Oscar nominee who has starred in a variety of classics in her long career, excelling at everything from comedy to drama, romance and action. Take a look back at 15 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Pfeiffer has had a 40+-year career on screen and has managed to overcome being known at first just for her looks. While her beauty was prominently on display in many of her first roles she quickly became more than just a pretty face and plunged herself into deeper and more complex roles. Pfeiffer’s first professional acting job was on a TV series version of the film “Animal House” called “Delta House.” Her character on the TV show was referred to simply as “The Bombshell.” This debut hardly signaled the arrival of an actress good enough to someday earn three Oscar nominations and seven Golden Globe nominations along with one win.

One of this week’s new releases stars Steve Coogan and a penguin, so here’s a film quiz about other actors and their animal co-stars.
They say you should never work with children or animals, but that’s not stopped movie stars teaming up with animal co-stars. There are usually mixed results – even the can’t-lose buddy pairing of “Tom Hanks and a French mastiff” definitely didn’t end happily for both of them (spoilery details here). Now in UK cinemas, Peter Cattaneo’s new movie The Penguin Lessons teams up Partridge and penguin, so we’ve got some quiz questions about other live-action animal star vehicles as part of your usual movie-related trivia safari.
Once you’ve completed this week’s film quiz, you’ll find a link to a separate post with the correct answers at the bottom of this post. As always, this is just for fun,...

Well! It’s happy news for all Johnny Depp fans as the Hollywood icon is all set to make his big screen comeback with his brand-new movie titled Day Drinker. The 61-year-old actor can easily be one of the most prominent figures in the acting business, with movies that have earned billions at the box office.
However, just like any other celebrity, he was also not immune to controversies, the most significant of which was his highly publicized legal battle with his ex-wife, Amber Heard. While this trial got its own place on Netflix, the actor was pretty much absent from the acting scene.
Now, after years of his personal life dominating the headlines, fans are absolutely thrilled to see him step back into the spotlight for what promises to be a brilliant cinematic experience.

Additionally, in a move that will please just about everyone, the delightful Nick Frost has been cast as Rubeus Hagrid. All will serve as series regulars.
Along with the aforementioned cast, HBO has also announced a recurring cast that includes Luke Thallon (The Favourite) as Quirinus Quirrell and five-time BAFTA winner Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch. Max’s Harry Potter TV series has officially cast four series regulars and two recurring roles, including four actors Deadline previously revealed: John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.
The newly announced cast includes Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch. Whitehouse is the only actor cast thus far to have appeared in any of the original films. He played Sir Cadogan in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
The franchise follows the life of a young wizard, the titular Harry Potter, whose parents died under mysterious circumstances when he was very young. He was forced to live a life of misery and servitude to his aunt and uncle and their awful son before he was freed from his gilded cage when Hagrid extended an invitation that changed his life forever.

The TV movie Threads that haunts to this day, and Kenneth Branagh and his moustache tackle Agatha Christie. Behind the scenes stories here.
It’s a film made for TV that takes the spotlight in this episode of Film Stories, as 1984’s terrifying post-apocalyptic Threads moves into the limelight. A film made on a very tight budget, and shot in under three weeks, it was nearly derailed entirely by an American TV production around the same time. And when it did get made and was screened? Well, traffic wardens have never looked so chilling.
20th Century Fox meanwhile had plans for a remake of Agatha Christie’s Murder On The Orient Express.. When Kenneth Branagh joined, he not only had a decision about facial hair to make, but there was also the challenge of a very large cast with very few days together.
Stories of both are told in this episode.

The first film adaptation of an Agatha Christie story was Leslie H. Hiscott's and Julius Hagen's "The Passing of Mr. Quin," released in 1928. This was only eight years after her first work, "The Mysterious Affair at Styles," was published, so she was still quite active when movie versions of her stories began to appear. Starting in 1930, Christie also began penning works for the stage (starting with "Black Coffee"), so she was already a media empire unto herself, years before such a thing had become de rigueur. As of this writing, there have been about 50 official cinema adaptations of Agatha Christie's novels and short stories, close to 40 TV movies, not to mention the long-running TV shows "Agatha Christie's Poirot" (1989 -- 2013) and "Agatha Christie's Miss Marple" (2004 -- 2014), plus a whole host of projects where she is a character herself, including...

Exclusive: Pam Levine, who recently exited Disney Branded Television and National Geographic as Head of Marketing, is going to Netflix as VP, Ucan Marketing & Publicity. This executive move, I understand, was always in the works for a while.
At Netflix, Levine will oversee all publicity and marketing for U.S. and Canada film and series, and report to chief marketing officer Marian Lee.
An internal memo about this is imminent, I hear, at the streamer.
Levine, a former 20th Century Fox and HBO marketing chief, joined Disney General Entertainment in June 2022. In the role, she led an integrated internal agency that spanned brand and creative marketing, strategy, publicity, media planning, digital/social, events, talent relations and awards, supporting content created for Disney+ as well as the Disney- and National Geographic-branded linear networks.

Agatha Christie wrote 66 novels throughout her career, and not all of them were bangers. For every classic like "Murder on the Orient Express" — which has received countless movie adaptations over the years — there's a book like "Hallowe'en Party," which was only adapted recently in 2023, over 50 years after its publication date. There were even some Christie novels that have never received a movie adaptation at all, like her 1935 plane-based mystery "Death in the Clouds" that was only ever given the TV miniseries treatment.
At the bottom of most Christie fans' to-read list are four books of hers that never received an adaptation of any kind, be it as a movie, TV show, radio play, or graphic novel. Her 1944 book "Death Comes as the End," her 1954 book "Destination Unknown," her 1970 book "Passenger to Frankfurt," and her 1973 book "Postern of Fate" have all been ignored by the entertainment industry. So, what was wrong with them?...

Tangled is one of the most popular and beloved recent Disney movies. Which naturally led to a need for a live-action version.
Disney is known for its beloved animated Disney Princesses, which include both classic characters like Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Belle, and Ariel, but also newcomers like Merida, Tiana, Moana, Raya, and Rapunzel. The latter got her own movie with the beloved 2010 animation Tangled. Disney was already working on developing a live-action version, but, per The Hollywood Reporter, the plans for the live-action Tangled are now paused amid its Snow White headaches.
There were conversations about the adaptation, but Disney confirmed the Tangled live-action remake in December 2024. Michael Gracey, who helmed critically acclaimed productions like The Greatest Showman and the Robbie Williams biopic Better Man, was in talks to direct. Jennifer Kayton Robinson, who helms the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel, wrote the draft for the script.

After Ej addressed his father’s portrait and ran down the litany of enemies who hate him, someone shot Ej Dimera in his own home. In the Thursday, April 3 episode of Days of Our Lives, Ej’s foes flashed back to their own incendiary interactions with the former Salem Da. And they acted pretty cagey. For example, Ava hightailed it out of town only after she got rid of her gun in the park trash receptacle.
Eight Questions What did Ej mean when he said he alluded to the fact that he was one step ahead?
Did Ej (Dan Feuerriegel) simply mean that he has been able to stay out of jail by making the moves he has been making, like disappearing Rachel Blake (Roslyn Gentle)? Or did he mean something else more recent?
How much time had passed between Ej talking to Stefano’s portrait and his being shot?...

This summer, the Jurassic series evolves in an ingenious new direction with Jurassic World Rebirth. And the dinosaur sequel has now stomped its way into CinemaCon. Universal showcased new footage from the movie, which will probably be finding its way online very soon with the movie hitting cinemas this summer. As per ScreenRant, the footage plays out as follows:
Begins with an alarm going off in the lab, with someone getting stuck inside a chamber with one of the mutant dinosaurs (the red room we see in the marketing materials). “In the island we’re heading to, two dozen species have survived there alone.” A T-rex is walking into water, chasing a group of people on a dinghy. Lots of shots from scenes shown in the trailer. “Survival is a long shot,” says Jonathan Bailey’s character. As they’re trying to escape the island on a boat, the mososaurus finds them and attacks.

Among the most legendary actresses of all time, Ingrid Bergman looms large. Bergman's career extended across decades, and she was able to work with some of the greatest filmmakers of all time, from Alfred Hitchcock to Michael Curtiz to Leo McCarey. And moreover, many of the films in her filmography are widely, and correctly, considered among the best English-language films ever made, from "The Bells of St. Mary's" and "Gaslight" to one of the most iconic American and World War II films ever, "Casablanca." Bergman, unsurprisingly, was well rewarded for her immense talent and acting craft, netting three Oscars (as well as being nominated four other times). That she wasn't even nominated for "Casablanca," a film that has a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes and walked away with the Best Picture Oscar, says something about how good she was and how not every one of her performances could get the golden statuette.

Sean Connery walked away from acting after a career spanning five decades. His most popular role was obviously 007 as he is still considered one of the best James Bond actors ever. He also had some noteworthy roles in films like Murder on the Orient Express, Highlander, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Hunt for Red October, and The Rock.
His final on-screen role was playing Allan Quatermain, a character that originated in King Solomon’s Mines, in the comic-based film, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Interestingly, the movie had a big role in the actor embracing his retirement life as he had major issues while working on the film.

He has won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in the 1987 film The Untouchables. His health may have also factored in the actor’s decision to give up acting altogether.

The new Shondaland murder mystery series “The Residence” shares some DNA with another Netflix whodunit: Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” film.
“It resuscitated the genre,” showrunner Paul William Davies told Variety at “The Residence” premiere in Los Angeles on Wednesday, revealing that Johnson’s film was a “hugely important” guidepost for his show in the way that it drew inspiration from 1970s whodunits.
“He played around with the history,” Davies explained. “That really opened the door for a lot of us to be like, ‘Oh, yeah, we can do that again.'”
“The Residence,” which is now streaming on Netflix, stars Uzo Aduba as the wildly eccentric detective (and legendary birder) Cordelia Cupp, who is tasked with solving a murder that takes place during a White House state dinner. “The White Lotus” Season 3 boasts an emblematic performance from Parker Posey as Victoria Ratliff, a lorazepam-dependent housewife from North Carolina who is convinced dying would be a better fate than living a less-than-luxurious life — a mentality the actress notes is rooted in pain.
“There are different ideas about Victoria and where she comes from [and] how much money she has — I think she comes from the wealth in the family and was quite spoiled, had everything at her fingertips,” Parker told TheWrap, adding that she carries some trauma after her father’s death. “But there’s a lot of pain under there, there’s a lot of eccentricities and neediness — she’s like a woman-child.”
That neediness is, of course, what worries Victoria’s husband, Timothy (Jason Isaacs), as he spirals over a white collar crime that is in the process of being uncovered during their vacation. While Posey notes Timothy...

The character of James Bond might've made Sean Connery a global movie star, but the actor didn't really enjoy the initial nine years he spent playing the MI6 agent. As Michael Caine once observed, "If you were his friend in these early days, you didn't raise the subject of Bond." A big part of the issue, according to Caine, was that Connery knew he had more to offer as an actor than 007, and thus, he bristled every time someone would identify him as Bond when he was out in public. Connery himself made no bones about his annoyance with the character. "I have always hated that damned James Bond," he once remarked (via The Guardian). "I'd like to kill him."

The fun thing about being a time traveler is that you can often procrastinate on important tasks for as long as you'd like. This was part of the appeal for Amy (Karen Gillan) at the start of "Doctor Who" season 5; she was having second thoughts about marrying Rory the next day, so the Doctor's promise that she could travel through space and time for as long as she wants beforehand seemed like a great deal.
The rest of the season eventually dealt with Amy's doubts about Rory, but it once again ended with the characters procrastinating. This time, it was the Doctor who took his sweet time getting around to an important task: in the finale, he receives a phone call (seemingly from the future queen or king of England) regarding an emergency situation. In the future there's apparently a train that runs in space called the Orient Express, and...

2025 has been a tough year already for deaths in cinema. Most recently we lost the likes of Gene Hackman and Michelle Trachtenberg, covering a wide fanbase. But one that still stings is that of David Lynch, who died on January 15th. And while this year’s In Memoriam segment of the Oscars did include Lynch, he also got another wonderful nod courtesy of Isabella Rossellini, who wore blue velvet in honor of the late director.
Isabella Rossellini — who was earned her first ever Oscar nomination for Conclave — paid tribute to David Lynch in a subtle but not unnoticeable way, turning up at the Dolby Theatre in a Dolce & Gabbana dress made of blue velvet, a lovely nod to the film of the same name that she starred in for Lynch. (Rossellini absolutely deserved an Oscar nomination for that performance but that’s nothing to get hung up on now...

When you think of an Agatha Christie whodunnit, specific murder mysteries come to mind. Some stories begin as traditional cases but end with startling revelations, the kind that "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" executes all too well. Then there are the thrilling, challenging titles, like Christie's "Murder on the Orient Express," which presents a huge cast of suspects harboring grudges within a kinetic setting. Sometimes, Christie challenges the brilliance of her own heroic figures, such as when detective Hercule Poirot races against time to catch a serial killer in "The ABC Murders." While every whodunnit has a distinct flavor, Christie's strengths as a writer lie in hiding the truth in plain sight and pulling off concluding twists with conviction. One of the more overlooked Christie murder mysteries embodying these strengths best is 1934's "Why Didn't They Ask Evans?," which keeps readers guessing up until the big reveal.

British actor and filmmaker Sir Kenneth Branagh has been a Hollywood staple for years, between his adaptations of Shakespeare plays like 1993's "Much Ado About Nothing" and 1996's "Hamlet" and blockbuster projects like "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," as well as the first "Thor" movie in 2021. He also won his first Academy Award in 2021 thanks to the autobiographical film "Belfast," which was based on his own childhood in the Northern Irish city during the Troubles. Branagh is clearly a curiously-minded and ambitious filmmaker and performer who's always looking for a new challenge, which might explain why, in 2017, he started adapting Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot stories for the big screen.
Branagh kicked off this new project with "Murder on the Orient Express" that year and followed It up with two other Poirot stories, "Death on the Nile" and "A Haunting in Venice," which came out in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

Whenever a book becomes popular and a bestseller, it's only a matter of time before it becomes a movie or TV show. And when these books reach a certain level of popularity or relevance, they can receive multiple adaptations. Books like Pride and Prejudice, Stephen King's It or Carrie, or Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express are now classic books that have received multiple movie or TV show adaptations. But while these popular books have taken to the screen more than once, they aren't close to the many adaptations some of the most adapted books of all time have.
Everyone knows the story of Dracula, Frankenstein or Tarzan, but probably not everyone knows just how many adaptations these books have. Some of the most adapted books have over 100 adaptations between movies, TV and theater productions. One of these books has more than 500 different adaptations. Other books have become such...
