Yes, there are a few moments when the acting leaves something to be desired (though the main three protagonists are actually pretty good, especially the girl). The secondary characters aren't terrible, but not great either.
The special effects were pretty good. It was low budget and a few scenes show that, but all things considered it's easy to look past.
Now, the real review point. The plot may seem a little odd at first, but as the story unravels it slowly peaks your interest more and more. My favorite part is at the very end (don't worry, no spoilers). The end just shows us the pointlessness of war and how stupid humans can be sometimes. It's actually a pretty deep meaning when you think about it.
My advice? Give it a shot, especially if you like movies that have a lot of deeper meaning. Though not my favorite movie, it is certainly one that I enjoyed. If it seems slow at first, just ride it out a little bit. It gets better and better, and at the very end the whole 'deep meaning' comes out and makes the movie so much more interesting and meaningful.
I actually liked it enough that I'm going to see if this producer has any more films out.
