- Overall, the topic of racism is very prevalent in the film. Several characters voice racist sentiments, though these characters are mainly depicted as negative. Signs such as 'whites only' can be seen in several scenes. The word 'nigger' is used occasionally.

- Seretse and Ruth drink shots of alcohol and become mildly intoxicated.
- Alcohol is served in several meetings with British officials and is discussed in one of them, as 'blacks' are not allowed to drink alcohol in Bechuanaland.
