Sex & Nudity

  • Only mild displays of affection (eg. kissing and caressing) are depicted in the film.
  • The film contains some kissing scenes.
  • In one of the scenes, a man is seen sliding the woman's bra strap down her shoulders as they kiss. However, the scene does not develop further.
  • The film also contains a scene featuring a group of women breastfeeding but no nudity is depicted.

Violence & Gore

  • Only mild displays of violence and very little blood (a bleeding nose) are depicted in the film.
  • The film begins with a boxing scene but no blood is depicted.
  • A man and woman are attacked on the street, and a fist fight ensues. The woman is hit by accident and bleeds from the nose.
  • Guards attack villagers with clubs. There is some screaming in the background, but there are no close-ups of the beatings. No blood is visible.

Profanity

  • Overall, the topic of racism is very prevalent in the film. Several characters voice racist sentiments, though these characters are mainly depicted as negative. Signs such as 'whites only' can be seen in several scenes. The word 'nigger' is used occasionally.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Seretse and Ruth drink shots of alcohol and become mildly intoxicated.
  • Alcohol is served in several meetings with British officials and is discussed in one of them, as 'blacks' are not allowed to drink alcohol in Bechuanaland.
  • There are occasional scenes of people smoking, which mainly serve to depict the 1940s setting.
