Photography converts the whole world into a cemetery. Photographers, connoisseurs of beauty, are also – wittingly or unwittingly – the recording-angels of death.
– Susan Sontag
Those words appear at the beginning of Disappear Completely (Desaparecer Por Completo), and seem perfectly appropriate as we see Santiago sitting in his car listening to the police radio. He’s a photographer, and he’s waiting to hear what he’ll be covering next. He doesn’t have long to wait before he’s busy shooting pictures of a cuffed suspect, sobbing victims in an ambulance, and, with the help of a bribe, a woman’s corpse.
Santiago works for a Mexican tabloid, one that very firmly believes the old adage, “If it bleeds, it leads”. And he’s excellent at capturing that bleeding on film, regardless of the cost.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week […]

In exactly one month, the fourth edition of Feratum (October 1-4) will kick off in Tlalpujahua, Michoacán. Let's check out then the films announced so far. The official competitive selection is composed of five different sections: Mexican Features, Mexican Shorts, Latin American Features, International Shorts and International Features. In terms of Mexican films, we have some familiar titles such as the horror anthology México Bárbaro, Leopoldo Laborde's no budget effort Piel Rota and - strangely enough because it already had a wide theatrical release in Mexico - the remake Darker than Night. There's also the world premiere of Juan Antonio de la Riva's Ladronas de Almas. Five films are part of the International Features competition, including Fantaspoa's production Jorge & Alberto vs. The Neoliberal Demons...

It was back in early November 2014 when we first reported on Lex Ortega's feature length debut Atrocious (aka Atroz). At the time, Ortega and his producer Abigail Bonilla had just launched a crowdfunding campaign, looking to finish the film as they had already 35 minutes of footage. While the contributions came on slowly, the campaign was eventually a complete success as they got more money of what they originally wanted. Then, the production of the film began on February 20 and wrapped exactly one week ago, on March 2. Ortega is well known within the genre circuit for his violent shorts and his recent segment in the horror anthology México Bárbaro, a project that was his idea. Atrocious will be - according to the...

With México Bárbaro screening this weekend at Mexico's most important film complex, that would be the Cineteca Nacional, it is the perfect time to share the complete set of posters that were designed for the horror anthology. Eduardo Santaella (aka Guro) put together a group of young Mexican illustrators, who made a different poster for each segment of México Bárbaro; hence we have 1 film, 8 directors, and also 8 illustrators. A real collective effort if you ask me. We have shared some of the posters before but never the entire set. You can check them out in the gallery below, and remember that México Bárbaro screens at Cineteca Nacional - as part of the horror mini-festival Masacre en Xoco - on Saturday, December 27 (8:30 Pm)....

Macabro 2014 hosted a very special public conference with seven of the eight directors that are part of the upcoming horror anthology México Bárbaro. It was the first time the project was presented to a wide audience in Mexico City, with each of the filmmakers, including Lex Ortega and Jorge Michel Grau, talking about their respective segment. We published an article and an extensive interview with six of the directors already, so let's stay focused on the brand new stuff. We got to see the first México Bárbaro teaser trailer during the conference. It didn't show much but the images are quite promising. It also introduced a metal song, with the singer repeating the film's title. The trailer is not yet available online for your enjoyment, but...

México Bárbaro's Gigi Saul Guerrero has just launched, together with the company LuchaGore Productions, a crowdfunding campaign for her new short film, which promises luchador action, blood, guts and, like any great horror film, social commentary. El Gigante is "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre with a crazy Mexican twist", and comes from the mind of horror writer Shane McKenzie, whose book Muerte Con Carne (praised by Fangoria) is being adapted to film by LuchaGore Productions. Saul Guerrero and her team want to create a feature length film based on Muerte Con Carne and the short El Gigante is literally just the beginning as it deals with the first chapter of the book. There's a cannibal family on the Mexico-United States border hunting illegal Mexican immigrants,...

As our own Andrew Mack reported, México Bárbaro is an upcoming Mexican horror anthology featuring cinematic adaptations of traditional legends from this country. It was conceived by Lex Ortega (sound designer for Frankenstein's Army) and will be offering segments by such directors as Somos Lo Que Hay's Jorge Michel Grau, Alucardos, Retrato de un Vampiro's Ulises Guzmán, and The Incident's Isaac Ezban. The anthology instantly became one of the most anticipated and promising Mexican films of the year. I had the fortune and honor to interview for Twitch six of the eight directors involved: Ortega, Guzmán, Ezban, Rue Morgue's Aaron Soto, M is for Matador's Gigi Saúl Guerrero and Babtized's Laurette Flores.
