Ah, what could have been
lauradi-807866 April 2017
I idly put on repeats of HIMYM (as I often do) and was surprised to see the genius composer of "Hamilton", Lin-Manuel Miranda, sitting next to Marshall in this episode. Who wrote this episode? Not Lin-Manuel Miranda -- it was show runners Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. Can you imagine how much more amazing this episode could have been if Bays & Thomas had turned over the reins? Instead, this mediocre episode is now a stellar example of "missed opportunity."

I don't like to waste my time, but this time HIMYM did it with a rhyme.
nicholas-whitely25 November 2013
The story of this was kind of pointless, nothing that made me feel full of bliss. Nothing of this really matters, all these episodes just keep getting "badder". This show used to make me joyful, now just a little mournful. The writers don't seem to know what their doing, nowhere that's where this story is going. Please don't rush these episodes for the cash, Because so far these episodes can kiss my... In all seriousness though these episode are going downhill. We all know about those episodes that are made just for fun, and these rhymes were impressive, but give us something good before you decide to go and have fun.

so bad

Warning: Spoilers
terrible, terrible, terrible!!!! This ep. was pretty much a filler but a very very bad one. It contributes nothing to the show and I wasn't even close to laughing once. I think it is the end for this show but i really hope it gets better. Stay away from this episode or you will be disappointed. It was very annoying and boring. The whole episode is narrated by corny rhyme and it is just so pointless. There is no plot to the wedding and i am so shocked how the writers and makers of the show keep pouring out crappier episodes after the next. This show needs a miracle to be saved now.

they need to include the mother more in the future episodes because she is a great character and this is the last season and she is barely in it.

Bedtime Stories (#9.11)
ComedyFan201011 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Surprised to see so much negativity to this episode. Seems that people still await some big twists in this season. It is all just about the wedding and sometimes bringing us back to the good old times. This is what this episode does, but it also does it in such a creative and original way that makes it more HIMYM way.

The whole rhyming is great. I love how the writers managed to write all the dialogue in rhymes. And Marshall together with the rest of the people on the bus and in the gang are perfect in delivering them.

I also like the stories. Nothing too complex but right on the point showing us the characters as we know them and connecting to the story, perfectly done with rhyming.

Worst Episode Ever - Don't waste your time.
soundwave-273-94086827 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I have really enjoyed HIMYM and I can excuse the odd bad episode but this was not only the worst episode of the series so far it was also the most ridiculous episode ever made. This season is supposed to be about the mother and she is yet to make a meaningful appearance. If this continues I think i will have to find something else to watch. I really would like the 20 odd minutes that I used to watch this back so I am starting to think that the writers, producers etc don't really care about the show anymore and they are out of ideas I can do something productive with it! Next weeks episode does not look much better based on previews Soundwave!!

Lin-Manuel Miranda!
fill_selk23 January 2016
The episode could not be any better To find a script clearer, pretty perfect to the letter But sitting there on the bus, looking cuter than a panda We meet a playwright most awesome - Dropping licks that can't quit, Lin-Manuel Miranda

So for all you haters of verse And, I hate to be terse This episode is great So y'all just stop the hate.

Are you still watching "How I Met Your Mother" I liked this episode, I think I'll have another... Since it's ten lines I must, and the verse length constrained, I must write more and never be restrained. Don't judge me Netflix, or you IMDb, It's just a review I want other to see.

Unwatchable
nylonnet27 April 2014
This episode was a B-side that only embarrassed the cast and any who kept watching for more than ten minutes.

It should never have passed first-draft status, let alone a rehearsal. I've looked forward to every episode of HIMYM, and was happy to accommodate the occasional slow or forced script. But this was an insult. The conceit was worthy for two or four lines, but for an entire episode? I would love to have heard the opinions of the cast when they were back in their trailers after having to regurgitate this script. The fact that it was made and not shredded afterwards makes it clear that everyone concerned was too busy updating their resumes and phoning their agents to worry about doing the right thing by their faithful viewers.

To see this show fall so far is truly sad, there's no denying this season is truly bad!
SLionsCricketreviews29 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
If I were skilled enough, I would 'rhyme' the entire review the way the writers 'masterfully' rhymed this episode. All joking aside, "Bedtime Stories" is one of the most eccentric episodes I have ever seen, and certainly, among the very worst of HIMYM.

We are now in Season 9 of HIMYM - the final season - and into the second half of the season. We have seen maybe ten minutes of the mother, after waiting 8 whole seasons for the reveal. If the writers are under the impression that this is a clever move (to show the Mother as infrequently as possible), they are sadly mistaken. Cristin Milioti is utterly terrific as The Mother, and she is given very little screen time so far. Rather, the show wastes an entire episode for something so ridiculously useless that we are forced to consider just how bad this show has become.

Aside from a rather touching ending, where Marshall holds Marvin as he gazes upon a fireworks display, this episode is useless. The rhyming is not clever and I am uncertain whether this episode is inspired by Buffy's "Once More with Feeling". Both episodes did contain Alyson Hannigan, but there is no wit nor an organic display of writing to make something like this - something so ridiculous - work. HIMYM should stick to the character of The Mother for this season, as she is so insanely lovable.

The worst episode by a mile.
Fergus2014 February 2021
It's clear this show is well past it's peak after you get to this episode. The whole storyline has been dragged on far too long. It's evident this episode was just to fill a slot. Season 9 should have never existed the story should have been wrapped up at the end of season 7.

A RHYMING EPISODE
elle-b-x27 January 2019
I don't understand the low ratings!!!! One of my favourite episodes as it's so sweet and takes away from the business of the final series! I can image it was just as much fun to film as it was for me, the writing is clever as they manage to make a whole 20+ minutes into a children's story of the gangs mistakes and life lessons. Love it.

I'm really sad
Odinson_Marvel10 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
As it's clear for everyone, this season is by far the worst.

The show used to be great from seasons 1 to 6. Then, seasons 7 and 8 lost their bright (with the exception of 2 or 3 episodes, like "The Robin" and the one with the Karate Kid appearance).

However, is more than obvious that the producers are completely lost (and that's a great irony, because LOST is an excellent example of a great story totally ruined by the lack of planning).

This episode is, by far, the worst episode of the worst season (yeah, i haven't seen the rest, but it's impossible to get worst than this).

You can feel in the actors that even they can't stand the show anymore. Even Barney became extremely boring.

It's a shame what they've turn the show into...

I don't get the bad reviews
mlbroberts27 July 2021
Except I guess some people don't like poetry. I thought this was as creative an episode as this series ever did. It stayed true to form as far as everything else went but the dialog was completely in rhyme, because Marshall was trying to get Marvin to sleep. Lin-Manuel Miranda before Hamilton, and the Mets mathematically eliminated in something like May. I loved it.

Worst episode ever...
s-sougnez26 November 2013
I remember few years ago when I came back from work... If I wasn't very happy or a bit tired, I really liked to watch an HIMYM episode. I was laughing all the episode long and after, I felt much better...

Now when I come back from work, if I'm happy and watch an episode of HIMYM, I end up shocked and disappointed... This TV show is worst and worst at each episode... Nothing is good since the end of the sixth season... I'm so looking forward the end...

This episode is the worst one... Nothing makes the story go further. Nothing is related to the wedding... It is clearly a filler but a so bad one... For now, I think it is the worst episode ever but hey... I guess I might change my mind in one week...

Yeah No

Warning: Spoilers
I liked the beginning but when I realised this would be the whole episode, it became insufferable. Marshall being the narrator is fine but the rhyming was really starting to get annoying. Would say this is the worst episode because it is the only episode I would never consider to rewatch.

Although it did have some funny jokes. It just felt like a no good filler

After a series of thrashing, this one felt refreshing!
Playbahnosh26 November 2013
I don't usually write reviews on episodes of series, but on this one I felt the need to get serious. Not every series can pull of a trick like this, since a gimmick like rhyming is mostly a hit-and-miss. The episodes in this season felt lackluster so far, the acting and the stories sure won't win an Oscar. But this one is at least something new, if a bit gimmicky, and was worth to watch, unlike the rest, which were rickety. I know my rhymes are a little forced, but so were the ones on the screen. Some of them were so bad and coarse, they almost made me scream.

I like, that they brought in the rapper dude from Dr. House. He busted some mad lines and rhymes that really brought down the house. But the short stories, too, were visions of past seasons, and I think they included them for all the wrong reasons. The episodes back then were really fun, charming and witty, but these later ones feel like they were designed by a committee. It seems the writers finally ran out of good ideas, so they chew on stripped bones like a bunch of starved hyenas. Using tropes like rhyming will only fly once, but including more of them won't help an ounce. I hope they soon come up with some better stories, or the audience will up go watch some other series...

My top 1 worst episode
edbardx15 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
To be honest, I don't know but for me, this is the most boring episode in the season even in the whole show. I didn't say this is bad though, I actually found it adorable when Marshall had to make a rhyming story spontaneously, but it's just a filler episode that isn't for me.

Its About Time For A Good Episode
inserrtnamehere2 January 2015
Although this season is definitely not the best one in a series so great, this episode stands out solely because it is 22 minutes of rhyming. Hats off to the writers for this episode because making the entire dialog nursery rhymes is not easy, and I believe that they pulled it off quite well. Plus, its about time that in the middle of season so disappointing that the writers and producers put in enough effort to please the audience. We already aren't seeing as much of The Mother as we want to, the least that the show could do is give us an episode that leaves the audience in awe after watching it. Other than the last episode of this season, this is the episode I most recommend people to watch.

I couldn't finish the episode
mquenonex19 July 2022
Worst episode ever in any comedy series.

I don't really care how smart the screenwriter think he/she is, this episode was only a waste of time. Absolutely no character development. Screenwriter only wants to end every sentence into a rhymh.

Easily one of the most masterfully written episodes in the series.
lavin2146 July 2021
I don't the poor reviews, this episode is amazing and it's writing is amazing. The only reasoning for the negative reviews that I can think of is the that they didn't like the last season in general.

Best episode of the worst season
zacpetch30 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Following and preceding several extremely weak episodes this comes as a breath of fresh air. The ninth season's real-time gimmick was unnecessary and made it fundamentally flawed and this is the ray of sunshine thrown into the mix.

The episode is filler, but since it's done well we'll let that slide. The entire episode is based on the combined factors of wanting to do a musical episode and Alyson Hannigan's decision to veto that idea leading us to twenty minutes of rhyme. Whoever wrote it deserves an award.

To do an episode entirely in Iambic Pentameter is brave for any show but HIMYM has always been quirky enough (Let's Go To The Mall!) so if any sitcom could pull it off this is the one.

It's safe to say that this is the only season nine episode worth watching. Not least to learn what rhymes with Nantucket.

Loved it!!!
siobhan-dd-etherington26 November 2013
I have read a lot of negative reviews about series 9, but have to say that I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

Really lovely getting a glimpse of Ted's future with 'The Mother' and fab to see how the gang have all met her in the past. I'm very much looking forward to seeing Ted meet her finally.

This episode was hilarious in the quirky and appealing manner we have come to expect from HIMYM. A full episode of rhyming stories to get baby Marvin to fall asleep. The extra character was fantastic and the whole episode had me and my husband giggling.

In my opinion this show can do no wrong. I've been a fan from the start and shall continue to avidly watch new and repeat episodes.

Keep 'em coming HIMYM!
