Great Documentary
huineman10 January 2014
This film unravels itself while following both the river flow and the adventures of a fox. The shots, the images, are flawless, even though some of the scenes involve tamed animals (most noticeable those of golden eagles). In spite of that, most takes must have meant outstanding struggle and patience; some that deserve being highlighted are, just to name a few among many others: a seemingly clumsy chameleon going from a tiny branch to another, deer wallowing in mud, or black vultures prevailing over griffon ones.

Duration is well adjusted lest the movie becomes tiring (one of the greatest problems of documentaries) but, the narrative gets corny oftentimes (another frequent problem of documentaries). Flamenco singer Estrella Morente isn't perhaps the best option for the voice-over albeit, one might forgive her after listening to the ending song (based on a poem by Antonio Machado), simply brilliant.

A stunning and well directed film by Joaquín Gutiérrez Acha, naturalist, producer and cameraman of wildlife documentary films.

Joaquín Gutiérrez Acha's works have achieved great international impact, winning numerous awards and being broadcast on television around the world. In fact, this Guadalquivir(2013) has been nominated for the Goya for best documentary and has won the Circle of Cinematic Writers Award for film in the same category, among many other awards. More than a river, the Guadalquivir is the channel that unites three of the most important natural spaces in Spain: Cazorla, Sierra Morena and Doñana. This film shows life at the passage of the current, the landscapes of these three great spaces at different times of the year.

Poetic documentary about the Guadalquivir, the second longest river in Spain, and a fox that lives near it and countless travelers will accompany you on this adventure . As the tue protagonist is a fox that undertakes an impossible journey from the cliffs to the marshes, following the river to the rhythm of the seasons It begins in autumn in the mountains of the Sierra Cazorla and Segura, where the great river is born and the water, rather than flowing, falls over the cliffs and stone cliffs, they are the land of the 'Golden Eagle', the 'deer' and the 'mountain goat'. And following the soft and rough slopes of Sierra Morena in winter, the landscapes of cranes, the 'black vulture' and the 'Iberian lynx', genets and red bulls that according to Greek legends Hercules stole . Along the path of the water, we observe the olive groves, the Dehesas that form the Mediterranean forest with its holm oaks with whose wood the galleons were built for the discovery of America and where the Iberian pigs graze. Showing meticulously an unique type of forest, the "dehesa", it is the perfect place to hide a large number of animals and other forms of life that have lived here since time immemorial. The Dehesa is a magical and mysterious place where many of its corners are yet to be discovered ; however , being threatened by pests and global warming .The shots , the frames , are flawless and really impressive . It is the kingdom of the forests, marvellously photographed by cameraman/directorJoaquín Gutiérrez Acha , showing the domain of wild animals , the land where the Iberian Lynx lives, the place where fantasy and reality walk together. A wild territory that is still forgotten and that the world must know . We observe a variety of creatures , both large and smal. And photographing a number of birds: the booted eagle, Flamingos, Storks, spoonbill birds, bee-eaters, Plovers, real owl and marine animals such as eels, Gambusias, Salinetes, nymphs. And reptiles as chameleon, long-snouted viper and insects.

The journey further down concludes in Doñana, - the presumed land of Atlantis - there where a barrier of dunes stops the river before dissolving into the sea, the waters overflow in the marshes, and the biodiversity reaches the highest levels in all of Europe.

In this film, through the flow of waters, the images and sounds of nature combine to offer a sensory experience, an immersion in the natural environment through the senses.

This documentary, one of the most important productions of the nature film shot in Spain. The Spanish filmmaker Joaquín Gutiérrez Acha carries out a stunning and brilliant film . With this work, the filmmaker closes a trilogy, which began with "Guadalquivir", where he showed us the different species that traveled the river from its source to its mouth . Then came his next project "Cantábrico"¨ or ¨Cantábrico , the domains of the brown bear¨, it is the territory of one of the most formidable creatures in the northern hemisphere: the Cantabrian brown bear. Joaquin was the complete responsible to shoot this stunning documentary that took two years of filming to complete the movie with a script by Carlos de Hita and music by Victoria de la Vega, which is very well integrated into the development of the story. The film has been recorded in 4K and that is very important today, because it allows us to see details that are otherwise very difficult to see with the human eye. This type of work should be compulsory in all schools, so that students get to know our heritage and our great variety of nature. Getting nominatation Cinema Writers Circle Awards, Spain 2021 : Nominee CEC Award Best Documentary Joaquín Gutiérrez Acha . And he's on the news for the recent premiere of ¨Dehesa , the forest of the Iberian lynx¨, along with other prestigious nature shorts and documentaries , such as : ¨Las montañas del lobo¨ (2003) , ¨Lince ibérico. El cazador solitario¨ (2004) , ¨Cantabria , Los Dominios del Oso Pardo¨about the treasures that the Cantabrian mountain, which was nominated for a Goya for best documentary, and specially ¨Guadalquivir¨ (2013) .
