Sharktopus lives to due battle again.
michaelRokeefe30 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Kevin O'Neill directs this third installment of the Sharktopus saga; the creature still lurks the waters of the Dominican Republic after defeating the fierce Pteracuda. A booze hound boat captain Ray(Casper Van Dien)and his sometime inept partner Pablo(Jorge Eduardo De Los Santos)are hired by a voodoo priest to find Sharktopus and cuts its heart out and return with it. Meanwhile, mentored by the crazed Rico Symes, Dr. Reinhart(Catherine Oxenberg)creates her own mutant creature. She mixes the DNA from a wolf and a killer whale, thus welcome Whalewolf. Sharktopus will realize it has a challenge in store. Might be the better of the franchise.

Other players: Tony Almont, Akari Endo, Jennifer Wenger, and Olga Valdez.

No. Just no!...
paul_haakonsen21 April 2017
For some odd reason I keep returning to movies like this, even though you know already that it is 99% likely going to be another stinker. And this whole genre is just loaded with questionable additions that outdo each other in one way or another.

But still, every now and then there are some of these movies that turn out to be entertaining and funny to watch. "Sharktopus vs Whalewolf", however, just wasn't one of those movies.

With movies such as "Sharktopus vs Whalewolf" you already know that you will most likely be in for some questionable CGI and special effects. But "Sharktopus vs Whalewolf" was not even trying. The CGI effects in this movie were among the top of most laughable and poor CGI effects that I have seen in this genre of movies.

The story in "Sharktopus vs Whalewolf" was also among some of the more outrageous and laughable of story lines, even for this particularly unique genre of movies. Why? Well, because it seemed like the writers weren't even trying to be serious.

"Sharktopus vs Whalewolf" is also filled with lame attempts at incorporating comedy in the movie; attempts which really failed at every aspect. And the movie suffered from that.

Catherine Oxenberg has the worst fake German accent ever and puts on one of the worst acting performances in the history of low budget creature features. But that might actually be one of the selling points to the movie, and why you should check it out. Trust me, it is worth watching, because it is bad on an epic scale.

Oh, and there was one scene where I counted 31 shots being fired from a handgun. That was just impressive. So at least there was something impressive to be seen in "Sharktopus vs Whalewolf".

Does not deliever the premise
aronharde27 February 2024
In the third entry of this awesome franchise, you have the Sharktopus fighting a "Whalewolf" and yes it's what it sounds like. Our lead is played by the legend Casper van Dien as the alcoholic Ray Brady. It's your typical nonsense chaos just like the first two movies except that this one felt even weirder. The first two movies seemed like their knew what they wanted and they went absolutely bananas with it and had their fun while this movie tries to introduce some voodoo stuff and also has way too much focus on the story and characters and I'm pretty sure no one who watches this is here for that. The people just want to see carnage and badly animated CGI mutants fighting each other and killing off people in a fun and absurd ways and I feel like this movie didn't deliver that as much as the first two. Yeah, the premise is fun but overall I did not enjoy this cinematic masterpiece as much as the first two movies and therefore somehow I am disappointed. [3,5/10]

The Best in the Series So Far

Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf (2015)

** (out of 4)

The drunken boat captain Ray (Casper Van Dien) is thrown into jail after a woman on his boat is killed by the sharktopus. While this is going on, mad scientist Dr. Reinhardt (Catherine Oxenberg) is experimenting with DNA, which leads to the whalewolf character. Soon more dead bodies are piling up while the two large monsters battle one another.

This is the third film in the SHARKTOPUS series and it's certainly the best. I think what makes this one work is that the film gives a lot of effort in trying to be funny and campy. The first two films in the series as well as many of these SyFy movies seem to think that if you purposely make a movie bad then it's going to be entertaining. That's not the case and that's why so many of them fail. This one here is obviously silly and over- the-top but the film doesn't play it dumb and instead comes up with a few clever jokes that actually work.

The highlight of the film is certainly the Oxenberg character as the actress is clearly having a blast playing the mad German scientist. Even funnier is a sequence where her big-breasted assistant runs around in slow motion with her things juggling. This here is pure Roger Corman sexism at its finest. Van Dien is good enough in his role and there's no doubt that he too appears to be having fun. Akari Endo is also good in her supporting role. As you'd expect, there's quite a bit of fake looking blood as various body parts are eaten by the two main characters.

SHARKTOPUS VS. WHALEWOLF is pretty good in its own way so if you're a fan of these types of movies then you're bound to get a few laughs out of it.

Not great but the best of the Sharktopus series
TheLittleSongbird15 August 2015
The first Sharktopus was pretty bad but was an alright diversion. The second movie Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda was a big disappointment, being twice as stupid to the point it was too much and with none of the previous movie's fun. Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf is the best of the three to me, it isn't great and execution is patchy but generally there are things that it does better than the previous two.

Generally, Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf is the best-looking of the three. The scenery is lovely, and photography and editing are tighter than before. The score is the quirkiest, the most suspenseful and fitting of the series, while the movie clearly knows what it wants to be (which is campy fun) and doesn't overdo it to the point of being dull and who it's aiming at (which I didn't get so much with the previous two) and there are some clever jokes in the script. The final fight is pretty exciting if a bit short, and the Sharktopus is the best-designed and least-fake-looking of the series and is pretty cool and menacing in personality whereas it was just goofy in the previous two. Casper Van Dien clearly has fun and tries to inject some tragedy, while Akari Endo is winning too.

Catherine Oxenberg however is wildly over-the-top, the most over-the-top parts being embarrassing, and she is as believable as a German in the same way with Keanu Reeves as an Englishman in Dracula or Jon Voight as a Paraguayan in Anaconda (two of the worst accents ever attempted in film so that's indication of how badly overdone her attempt was). The characters have personality but not development with motivations and such being on the surface. The whalewolf was a missed opportunity, marginally better at least than the pteracuda but it's rendered cheaply, it's not much of a threat and is too underdeveloped to be able to root for it. While Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf works in the fun factor and is never dull, it fails as horror, the attacks are too random, too rushed and too goofy and it comes at the expense of tension and suspense, which is nowhere in sight (they are also predictable and not unlike anything seen in the previous Sharktopus movie and the Mega Shark franchise). Some of the dialogue is cheesy and inane, apart from some clever jokes, and while Sharktopus' death is cool Whalewolf's is anti-climactic.

Overall, Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf may not be great but it is the best of the Sharktopus movies. 5/10 Bethany Cox

What to expect
kosmasp15 January 2021
No seriously? What do you expect from a movie with a title like that? Now I have not seen the previous entry into the Sharktopus ... universe I guess you can call it (there are apparantly another two of them prior to this one), so I can't say how this does compared to them.

What I can say, is that the CGI is as bad as one can imagine. Very obvious. So obvious though that the movie is winking almost all the way through it. Like when one character very late in the movie says upon seeing one of the creature eating another person, something along the lines of "that doesn't even look real". Yes the movie is aware of its flaws, the characters are too. Playing catch with a Whalewolf (great name btw)? I mean come on ... also the slapstick of the creature slapping Casper van Dien around? Or showing him on a map where he is, after he asks and wonders exactly that? That doesn't mean that all jokes work. Far from it. Some are just plain bad ... and almost hurt physically. But again, what to expect? Exactly! (although nudity would be something I reckon many did expect ... well you won't get that)

Stupid as F**k
kublerdenise21 October 2015
This movie was beyond stupid. I can't believe I even watched it in the first place. The acting was ultra bad, the special effects were comparable to a 3 year old messing around on paint, what the bleep was up with her German accent and what was up with the not nude porn stars??!

If it were possible i would give this movie -100 stars, that's how bad it was.

The money wasted on this could have found better use.

Please never ever even think about making another one of these stupid A** Movies.

(The only reason i watched it till the end was because I wanted to know who wins)

This movie is unwatchable....May contain spoilers
dana_m2921 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Where do I begin with this movie? I guess with the first twenty minutes, since that is as far as we got before we said "WTF are we watching?" The doctor with the German accent was difficult to understand and seemed to lack any passion for her job, nor did she care about the well being of her patients. It wasn't clear what the purpose of this experiment was, and I don't know how a werewhale relates to anti aging, not do I know why the doctor wanted to be bitten by him. All I know is this movie is unwatchable, Syfy is apparently phoning it in and banking on it's reputation of campy monster movies to lure in viewers, but this one is just crap.

Unbelievably bad
Leofwine_draca22 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
An unbelievably bad monster sequel from the SyFy Channel, when I saw this one I thought it was a joke. Casper Van Dien appears in his worst film ever - which is saying something given the tripe he's shot over the years ever since his STARSHIP TROOPERS heyday - and the whole thing has a jokey, amateur, independent feel. One plot strand has a horribly overacting mad scientist creating a 'whalewolf', whatever that is, while other has Sharktopus rampaging at sea and on land. The CGI effects are pure cartoons here and a brief attack on a shopping mall the only moment of promise.

Incredibly bad in every respect
grantss5 January 2023
A scientist, Dr Elsa Reinhardt, mixes the genes of a whale and a wolf, creating a hybrid monstrosity, the Whalewolf. Clearly the only answer is to locate something equally hybrid and monstrous, the Sharktopus, and use that to deal with the Whalewolf.

From the title of the film you already know this is going to be pretty stupid. The plot outline doesn't change that view and neither does the actual film. There's the only positive thing I can say about the mountain of excrement: it lives up to expectations.

Everything about this is incredibly bad: the plot (obviously), the acting, the special effects. I thought the CGI would at least be decent but it's absolutely woeful.

Avoid at all costs.

beautiful women bad everything else
kaefab24 January 2022
Well there is no denying the amount of hot women in this movie, but the rest from acting to scrip to the even worst play station1 special effects kind of ruin the rest.

I kept it going for 40 minutes then turned it off.

This movie changed my life.

Warning: Spoilers
Before I was a crack addict, living in the ends. But I watched this film and saw Captain Ray, and realised what Id become. Now, I go to AA meetings twice a week, and I'm on the road to recovery. I also had an unhealthy diet of hookers and street whores. But now I only do myself. (out of choice) The vuju guy was a fantastic actor, shame his head was eaten. I wish mine was. (i mean my pepe) i am sad the nurse hooker lady died. CGI 10/10 fo' sho'. Was basically 3D. Better than Avatar. Story line on point. It makes complete sense that a whalewolf would find a home in a stadium. Somewhere where there is no water. Lol. Peace out homies. SHARKTOPUS RIP. (spoiler alert)

Your 10:00 is here.
Mr. OpEd20 July 2015
For once, a SyFy original that's funny on purpose.

If we're lucky, one out of every 200 SyFy originals is decent entertainment because the people behind it knew what they were doing with direction, music, editing, and above all, the script. Sadly, most SyFy orgs feel like a near death experience.

Sharktopus vs Whalewolf is just as stupid a premise as any other SyFy flick, and the film makers embrace this, turning it into one of the funnier films. And yes, it's meant to be funny. Catherine Oxenberg is obviously having a blast as the hammy Kraut. Casper Van Dien (whose beard is somehow 30 years older than the rest of him) is the Errol Flynn type (the alcoholic Flynn, that is). Akari Endo, for whom this is not her first SyFy rodeo gets to shine as the take-charge badge on the beach.

The effects are slightly more polished in the CGI department, but it's still CGI and the Whalewolf looks more like a monster puppy than a man eater, but that's part of the charm.

Highly recommended but don't come into this expecting bad SyFy or even so-bad-it's good. Get ready to chortle!

blklablscitysdmf15 July 2023
Stupidly FUN. I swear some of you have sticks up your backend. This is your typical SyFy channel type of movie. In fact I think it was a SyFy movie and it checks off all the boxes.

Fun...check.

Stupid...check

Hilarious over the top acting. Ofcourse

This movie knows exactly what it is it's NOT trying to be Nightmare on Elm St, scream , or even Jurassic park

What it is trying to be is a cheese flick that you would have watched on Up All Nite on the weekend with a few friends and a few beers

It's a palate cleanser for the more serious films. We aren't watching The Godfather here!

If you can not over think this. Enjoy what's being given you'll have a great time with this. If you think everything needs to be serious all the time. This movie is NOT for you.

Shockingly good.
13Funbags30 October 2019
I messed up again and watched the 3rd movie in a series first. It probably doesn't matter except that I have nothing to compare it to. This is by far the best bad shark movie I have seen so far. The story was good and it was actually funny. The only thing I didn't like was that people immediately recognized it as a whalewolf. If I didn't know the name of the movie I would never have been able to guess at what it was. It has a shark fin, lol. I might have called it sharkdog. Watch it.

Awesome entry in the newfound franchise
kannibalcorpsegrinder20 July 2015
Hoping to secure a hanging debt, a fisherman finds his battle with the monstrous Sharktopus in jeopardy when the appearance of a part-man, part killer-whale, part-wolf hybrid appears in the area leading to a massive territorial battle between them.

On the whole this one is quite the impressive and enjoyable entry in the rapidly evolving franchise. Much like the previous efforts, this one lives and dies with the cheese in here which is found in the usual suspects throughout that range from the creature designs to the plot set-up and the action to the special effects and mostly everything else in here. A lot of these come off rather nicely because of the cheese, from the creature designs as Sharktopus looks the best he's ever looked here with a rather cool-looking head-redesign and a more natural coloring job on his body, while the Whalewolf comes off even better as the four-legged, whale-bodied wolf-headed creature is one of the channels' absolute best designs, yet the infusion of the wolf into the creature allows it to be imbued with more life and character than almost any other creature they've ever showcased. With scenes of it attempting to be house-broken in the scientist lab, a rather amusing trait in wanting to play fetch with the severed limbs of it's kills and generally being treated like a dog throughout here there's some utterly hilarious moments found throughout here while also managing to build up enough sympathy for the creature that it's eventually turn is wholly justified and reasoned. Likewise, the influx of the voodoo priest and his ability to gain control over the creatures is immensely cheesy but also manages to inject a fresh spin on the series without letting it get too wrapped up in the familiar and makes for a novel idea in a series not really known for allowing that opportunity. In turn, that sets up the action along the way with this one getting a wide range of attacks, from the cheesy like the first fishing attempt to catch the creature or the attack at the marina where they manage to sever it's tentacle and enable the voodoo-possession to occur through that, while more serious scenes include the Whalewolf being stalked through the laboratory by the police detectives or the multitude of fights between them that occur here as they manage to battle a couple of times along the way and each one manages to get the upper hand in one of the battles before the final showdown which is the shortest battle yet remains no less exciting anyway. Even other action scenes, like the creatures' continued attacks on a reality show filming in the area or the escape chase from the scene manage to get a lot to like here and the finale in the shopping mall is pure hilarity that has to be seen to be believed and is truly uproarious. Again, sure the special effects here are obviously done in CG and look it every second they're on-camera, but there's still a lot to like elsewhere here to really make this worthwhile.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence and Language.

Perfect film, except for one thing
NubomTrk27 August 2020
Well-written. Acting is on point, and special effects are so realistic that it's hard to distinguish the line between real life.

My biggest gripe was that throughout the film, everyone kept mispronouncing the creature's name.

It's shark-TO-pus, not SHARK-to-puss!

This is one of the scariest movies I have seen. I can think one movie that is scarier Sharktopus. But still this is a very scary movie. This is scarier then The Shinning. It has a great story line. It also has great acting.

Yes yes, very good
lauajalg5 July 2023
Yes, I indeed enjoyed watching this move. I recommend it to everyone who likes REALLY scary horror movies. After watching this move I was TOO scared to even go anywhere near water. The sharktopus and whalewolf looked SO real I thought they were real animals for a second. I have never seen better CGI in a movie. This movie was the best hour and a half I have ever spent in my life. Gorgeous cinematography and great acting. I do not know why other people have given it such a low rating, do not listen to them, they do not recognise great art when they see it. I do not have a one bad thing to say about this movie. I think everyone should watch this masterpiece AT LEAST once in their life.
