Car Seat Headrest Just Made a Rock Opera. It’s Kind of Awesome
Image
If you’re thinking about diving into The Scholars, the new album from Car Seat Headrest, don’t mess around. Go past the three-minute songs, and the four-minute one and the eight-minute one, and the 10- and 11-minute ones, too. Go straight to the main event, the 18-minute “Planet Desperation.” Will Toledo goes on an epic search for his “gnostic soul,” seeking his way through Bowie-esque music-hall wallow, New Wave kicks, Queen-ly chorale, arena-rock ecstasy, flower-headed folk, heart-spilling piano beauty, Dead-ish space-drum vertigo, and much more, taking so...

Car Seat Headrest ‘The Scholars’ Review: A Lumbering, Fist-Pumping Rock Opera
Image
Car Seat Headrest’s The Scholars isn’t the band’s first dalliance with a narrative format. Their 2011 album Twin Fantasy, which was re-recorded and re-released in 2018, is a concept album about adolescent self-discovery and sexual awakening. The Scholars similarly centers on young adults, but these characters are less concerned with sex and drugs than the esoteric traditions and mysterious happenings at the fictional Parnassus University. The story is vague as best, introducing enigmatic figures like a med student with supernatural healing powers and an aspiring furry with an overbearing mom, before climaxing with a destructive raid by students from Parnassus’s neighboring rival Clown College.

It’s an especially fraught time for academia, what with centuries of tradition seemingly in peril of being trashed by clowns, and this 70-minute rock opera touches on those institutional anxieties. The track “Equals” alludes to an oft-publicized culture of mob justice wherein one...

Ed Sheeran Drops ‘Playful’ New Single ‘Azizam’
Image
Ed Sheeran has shared a new single, “Azizam.” The song is a collaboration with producer Ilya Salmanzadeh, who encouraged Sheeran to make music inspired by his Persian heritage and culture.

“I love learning about music and different cultures the more I travel and connect with people,” Sheeran shared on Instagram. “It was like opening a door to a completely new and exciting world. Aurora Perrineau Joins Katherine Waterston, Simon Pegg & Minnie Driver In Drama ‘Angels In The Asylum’
Image
Exclusive: Aurora Perrineau (Prodigal Son) has been tapped for an undisclosed role in Angels in the Asylum, an upcoming indie drama marking the feature debut of writer-director Rob Sorrenti.

Perrineau joins an ensemble which also includes Katherine Waterston, Simon Pegg, Minnie Driver, Cush Jumbo, Rose Williams and Miriam Margolyes, as previously announced.

Inspired by a BBC Newsnight exposé, the film tells the untold story of 50 women who were forcibly confined in isolation at Surrey’s Long Grove Asylum. Beginning in 1907, these women — deemed typhoid carriers — were imprisoned in the former psychiatric hospital, their lives shaped by fear, stigma, and medical injustice. Pic explores their struggle for freedom and dignity in the face of a system that saw them as threats rather than individuals, shedding light on a dark chapter in medical history.

Heather Greenwood, Marie-Elena Dyche and Charlotte Carey are producing the pic, currently shooting in the UK, with Parkland Pictures handling sales.

One Of Kristen Stewart's Best Performances Is Coming To Netflix Next Month
Image
One of the best performances of Kristen Stewart's career is coming to Netflix next month. Though her breakout roles came in David Fincher's Panic Room, Zathura: A Space Adventure, and Into the Wild, Stewart has been synonymous with Bella Swan and The Twilight Saga for much of her career, starring in the five franchise films from 2008 to 2012. In those five films, Stewart's performance as Bella was widely panned, which led to her being unfairly labeled as an emotionless actress.

After starring in another big-budget production, 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman, Stewart shifted her focus to indie projects and, just like her Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson, reinvented herself as an actor. During the remainder of the 2010s, Stewart starred in the dramas Camp X-Ray, Still Alice, and Equals, but began garnering critical acclaim for her collaborations with director Olivier Assayas in Clouds of Sils Maria and Personal Shopper.

Ed Sheeran on His New Song for ‘That Christmas’ and His Next Album: ‘I’m Getting Back Into Big Pop’ (Exclusive)
Image
“Love Actually” director Richard Curtis and songwriter and musician Ed Sheeran go way back: Sheeran’s first girlfriend even babysat Curtis’ children.

Since then, they’ve collaborated on several projects, including Comic Relief and the Danny Boyle-helmed 2017 film “Yesterday,” in which Sheeran stars and Curtis co-wrote. So when Curtis was conceiving his first animated project “That Christmas,” he showed Sheeran some early storyboards, and the original conversation was that it would be a musical.

“He asked if I wanted to write the music for it, and I said, ‘Cool,’” Sheeran says from his home in London. “There was one scene, and I wrote a chorus for it, but didn’t hear anything back.’”

Two years later, Curtis asked Sheeran to finish the song “Under the Tree” and updated him on the story. “That Christmas” which is now streaming on Netflix, would no longer be an animated musical, but rather...

Will ‘Subtract’ win Ed Sheeran that elusive Album of the Year Grammy?
Image
Ed Sheeran is back this year with “Subtract,” which is said to be the last album from his mathematical album series. It debuted in the top two of the Billboard 200, and features a softer, more acoustic sound from Sheeran, similar to his first album, “Plus.” With “Subtract,” Sheeran will compete in the current Grammy cycle, after a couple of rocky years with the recording academy. However, “Subtract” could be Sheeran’s way back to the Grammy stage.

SEEEd Sheeran ‘Subtract’ reviews: Is new album a return to form for British singer-songwriter?

It seems like the Grammys have been moving away from Sheeran. In 2017 many expected him to clean up in the nominations for his highly successful album “Divide,” featuring the blockbuster hit “Shape of You.” Instead, Sheeran was snubbed in the general field and relegated to pop, where he won his only two nominations: Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Pop Solo Performance for “Shape.

Billboard 200: Yep, Morgan Wallen (‘One Thing at a Time’) still at #1 for 10th week, blocking Ed Sheeran from top spot
Image
Country singer Morgan Wallen remains an unmovable object on the Billboard 200, holding the number-one spot for the 10th week in a row with his latest album “One Thing at a Time.” The 36-track collection achieved 141,000 equivalent album units based on its combined album sales, individual track sales, and online streams — that’s actually up two-percent from last week. Read all about this week’s chart here at Billboard.com.

Hitting double digits is historic for Wallen, who becomes the first solo male artist to achieve 10 weeks at number-one with back-to-back albums. His previous album, “Dangerous” — which is still at number-five this week, mind you — also spent its first 10 weeks in the top spot. Only four other acts in general have achieve 10 or more weeks with consecutive releases: The Kingston Trio, The Monkees, Whitney Houston, and Adele.

Ed Sheeran ‘Subtract’ reviews: Is new album a return to form for British singer-songwriter?
Image
It’s been a tumultuous week for Ed Sheeran, but undoubtedly a good one. He won a copyright lawsuit that alleged he copied his Grammy-winning “Thinking Out Loud” from Marvin Gaye‘s classic “Let’s Get It On”; a loss there would have been ironic since “Thinking Out Loud” is the composition he won the top songwriting Grammy for. Shortly after the trial ended he dropped his coincidentally scheduled new album “Subtract.” What do critics think of his latest collection?

Well, the early assessments are somewhat mixed, but they average out to a strong MetaCritic score of 74 based on seven reviews counted as of this writing. That’s much better than his last album “Equals,” which scored 59 based on 13 reviews, and his album before that “No. 6 Collaborations Project,” which scored 57 off of 14 reviews. By the time you read this that number may have changed for better or worse; he’d...

Grammy predictions: Ed Sheeran’s ‘Subtract’ enters top 10 in our Album of the Year odds
Image
Ed Sheeran announced on March 1 that he’d be releasing a new album, “Subtract,” on May 5, and just three weeks after that announcement (and more than a month before its release), the album has already climbed into the top 10 in our Grammy odds for Album of the Year based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. Check out or latest odds here, and make or update your own predictions here in our predictions center as the season progresses.

Sheeran is already a four-time Grammy winner, including a Song of the Year victory for his love ballad “Thinking Out Loud.” He also has three past noms for Album of the Year. The first was in 2014 as a featured artist on Taylor Swift‘s “Red”; they lost to “Random Access Memories” by Daft Punk. The second time was in 2015 for an album of his own, “Multiply”; “Morning Phase” by Beck ended up taking the prize.

AMAs Pop predictions: Epic battles between Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Beyonce, and more
Image
We all love pop music, don’t we? The genre has been bursting with exciting new sounds lately, thanks to the success of established artists like Taylor Swift and The Weeknd, as well as the newer sounds brought to the mainstream by people like Bad Bunny and Doja Cat. Indeed, pop is alive and well in 2022, so let’s see which stars will have enough power to take home one, two, or maybe even three AMAs when the time comes this weekend on November 20 when awards are handed out.

SEEAMAs R&b predictions: Beyonce faces tough challenges from Doja Cat and The Weeknd

Favorite Male Pop Artist

Let’s go through the process of elimination. Drake is a perennial loser in this category, likely due to his lack of pop fans (his support tends to come in rap/hip-hop). Bad Bunny would be a very deserving winner, but one has...

Kristen Stewart Will Direct Imogen Poots in ‘The Chronology of Water,’ Produced by Ridley Scott
Image
Kristen Stewart just completed her 2022 goal: marking her feature directorial debut.

The long-gestating adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir “The Chronology of Water” is co-written by Stewart and Andy Mingo, who has been attached to direct the film since 2018. Imogen Poots will lead the film. Representatives for Poots confirmed the casting to IndieWire.

“Lidia’s memoir honors corporeal experience, radically,” Stewart said in a press statement, as first shared by Deadline. “To make that experience physical feels vital to me and what this impulse means…is that it absolutely must be a film.”

The “Spencer” Oscar nominee continued, “This project has been cooking for five years with the help of Scott Free, whom I could not be more privileged to have as partners and friends. Imogen Poots will carry this movie and the staggering weight of Lidia’s life. She can hold it. I am beyond lucky to have her.

Kristen Stewart To Direct Scott Free’s Adaptation Of ‘The Chronology Of Water’ Starring Imogen Poots
Image
Exclusive: After making her short-film directorial debut with Scott Free, Kristen Stewart is set to reunite with the banner for her feature directorial debut as she is set to direct The Chronology of Water, with Imogen Poots set to star. Stewart also will co-adapt the script with Andy Mingo, which is based on the memoir by Lidia Yuknavitch.

A Reader’s Choice Award winner at the 2012 Oregon Book Awards and finalist for the Pen Center USA Creative Nonfiction Award, the memoir is a lyrical journey through a life saved by art. A young woman finds her voice through the written word and her salvation as a swimmer – ultimately becoming a triumphant teacher, mother and a singular modern writer. A survivor’s story and a sexually abrasive and honest coming of age, the film is a physical memory wash of Yuknavitch’s inner life.

24 most shocking Grammy snubs: Taylor Swift, Zach Bryan, and we really don’t talk about ‘Bruno’
Image
Often as interesting as who is nominated at the Grammys is who isn’t nominated at the Grammys. Sometimes those snubs are more than just surprising. In the case of The Weeknd, it led to a boycott of the awards. So these outcomes are not only consequential to the artists in question, but the entire awards process. Scroll down to see which high-profile artists, albums, and songs missed the cut in this year’s big four categories.

SEE2023 Grammy nominations list

For starters, the Recording Academy decided not to give Taylor Swift another round of nominations for “Red (Taylor’s Version).” The original version was nominated for Album of the Year about a decade ago, but her re-recorded and expanded “Taylor’s Version” collection was left out of the Album of the Year lineup. Her 10-minute-long “All Too Well” was also snubbed for Record of the Year, though it wasn...

2023 Grammys pop preview: Could Harry Styles hand Adele her first loss for Best Pop Vocal Album?
Image
These past 12 months have given us great pop albums. Massive comebacks have been at the forefront with new releases from artists like Adele and Harry Styles, and we’ve also seen more pop artists find success with critics as well as on the charts. As such, it’s time to dive into the most popular albums with chances at Grammy nominations (and a win) for Best Pop Vocal Album.

SEE2023 Grammys pop preview: Performance contenders include huge hits and epic collabs

Some albums are close to locks. Adele’s “30” is an obvious frontrunner due to how much voters love her (she hasn’t lost a Grammy race in years), and how big the album was in its first few months. Likewise, Styles will probably get his second nomination in this category for his record “Harry’s House,” which netted career-best numbers for him. Adele is the more traditional pick, whereas...
